Hydrodefluorination of Fluoroarenes Using Hydrogen Transfer Catalysts with a Bifunctional Iridium/NH Moiety

Selective Nickel-Catalyzed Hydrodefluorination of Amides Using Sodium Borohydride

Hydrodefluorination selective to the ortho position to amides is accomplished under mild conditions using sodium borohydride and a nickel catalyst. The facile formation of a nickelacycle intermediate with a specific geometry ensures selectivity without the need for electronic directing groups, and fluorine atoms in other positions remain intact. This method avoids the use of stoichiometric silanes which are typical for most other defluorination reactions, resulting in virtually no organic waste byproducts.

Regioselective Transfer Hydrogenative Defluorination of Polyfluoroarenes Catalyzed by Bifunctional Azairidacycle

The catalytic hydrodefluorination (HDF) with a bifunctional azairidacycle using HCOOK was examined for cyano- and chloro-substituted fluoroarenes, including penta- and tetrafluorobenzonitriles, tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile, tetrafluorophthalonitrile, 3-chloro-2,4,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine, and 4-cyano-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine. The reaction was performed in the presence of a controlled amount of HCOOK with a substrate/catalyst ratio (S/C) of 100 in a 1:1 mixture of 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) and H2O at an ambient temperature of 30 °C to obtain partially fluorinated compounds with satisfactory regioselectivities. The C–F bond cleavage proceeded favorably at the para position of substituents other than fluorine, which is in consonance with the nucleophilic aromatic substitution mechanism. In the HDF of tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile and 4-cyano-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine, which do not contain a fluorine atom at the para position of the cyano group, the double defluorination occurred solely at the 2- and 5-positions, as confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The HDF of 3-chloro-2,4,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine gave preference to the C–F bond cleavage over the C–Cl bond cleavage, unlike the dehalogenation pathway via electron-transfer radical anion fragmentation. In addition, new azairidacycles with an electron-donating methoxy substituent on the C–N chelating ligand were synthesized and served as a catalyst precursor (0.2 mol%) for the transfer hydrogenative defluorination of pentafluoropyridine, leading to 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine with up to a turnover number (TON) of 418.

A Selective Single Step Amidation of Polyfluoroarenes

This chemistry establishes a method for the synthesis of per- and poly-fluoroaryl acid amides, utilizing nucleophilic aromatic substitution. Traditionally, such amides are constructed in a two-step process, namely, ammonolysis and then N-acylation. Herein, good yields of N-polyfluoroaryl acid amides were achieved in a single step under mild reaction conditions. Key to achieving optimal yields is the use of two equivalents of the nucleophile. In addition, the mechanism of the reaction is discussed which has implications for other related nucleophilic substitutions.

Catalyst-Free Hydrodefluorination of Perfluoroarenes with NaBH4

Presented is an economical means of removing fluorine from various highly fluorinated arenes using NaBH₄. The procedure was adapted for different classes of perfluoroarenes. A novel isomer of an emerging class of organic dyes based on the carbazole phthalonitrile motif was succinctly synthesized in two steps from tetrafluorophthalonitrile, demonstrating the utility of the hydrodefluorination procedure. Initial exploration of the dye shows it to be photoactive and capable of facilitating contrathermodynamic styrenoid E/Z isomerization.

New Bifunctional Bis(azairidacycle) with Axial Chirality via Double Cyclometalation of 2,2'-Bis(aminomethyl)-1,1'-binaphthyl

As a candidate for bifunctional asymmetric catalysts containing a half-sandwich C–N chelating Ir(III) framework (azairidacycle), a dinuclear Ir complex with an axially chiral linkage is newly designed. An expedient synthesis of chiral 2,2′-bis(aminomethyl)-1,1′-binaphthyl (1) from 1,1-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) was accomplished by a three-step process involving nickel-catalyzed cyanation and subsequent reduction with Raney-Ni and KBH₄. The reaction of (S)-1 with an equimolar amount of [IrCl₂Cp*]₂ (Cp* = η⁵–C₅(CH₃)₅) in the presence of sodium acetate in acetonitrile at 80 °C gave a diastereomeric mixture of new dinuclear dichloridodiiridium complexes (5) through the double C–H bond cleavage, as confirmed by ¹H NMR spectroscopy. A loss of the central chirality on the Ir centers of 5 was demonstrated by treatment with KOC(CH₃)₃ to generate the corresponding 16e amidoiridium complex 6. The following hydrogen transfer from 2-propanol to 6 provided diastereomers of hydrido(amine)iridium retaining the bis(azairidacycle) architecture. The dinuclear chlorido(amine)iridium 5 can serve as a catalyst precursor for the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone with a substrate to a catalyst ratio of 200 in the presence of KOC(CH₃)₃ in 2-propanol, leading to (S)-1-phenylethanol with up to an enantiomeric excess (ee) of 67%.

Ruthenium-Catalyzed Hydrodefluorination with Silane as the Directing and Reducing Group

We describe herein an efficient and selective Ru-catalyzed intramolecular HDF directed by a silyl group, which is readily installed, and removable and transformable following the HDF reaction. The hydrosilyl group in polyfluoroaryl silane acts not only as the directing group but also as the internal reductant, enabling precise control of the ortho-selectivity and avoiding overdefluorination. Mechanistic studies reveal a plausible catalytic cycle involving a Ru(IV)-aryne intermediate.

O-Perfluoropyridin-4-yl Oximes: Iminyl Radical Precursors for Photo- or Thermal-Induced N-O Cleavage in C(sp2)-C(sp3) Bond Formation

O-Perfluoropyridin-4-yl group was first installed onto cycloketone oximes as a new electrophore, which was proven to be efficient iminyl radical precursors under photocatalytic and thermal conditions. A range of O-perfluoropyridin-4-yl oximes were successfully utilized in C(sp²)-C(sp³) bond formations of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones and alkenes, providing facile accesses to a range of functionalized alkylnitriles.

Selective hydrogenation of fluorinated arenes using rhodium nanoparticles on molecularly modified silica

Transfer hydrogenation of carbon dioxide via bicarbonate promoted by bifunctional C-N chelating Cp*Ir complexes

Metal-ligand cooperative Cp*Ir(iii) complexes derived from primary benzylic amines effectively promote transfer hydrogenation of atmospheric CO2 using 2-propanol at 80 °C. Isotope-labelling experiments strengthen that active Ir species can preferentially reduce bicarbonate congeners formed from CO2. The powerful transfer hydrogenation catalyst exhibits remarkable activity for the conversion of bicarbonates into formate salts with a turnover number up to 3200, even without H2 and CO2.

Selective Copper Complex-Catalyzed Hydrodefluorination of Fluoroalkenes and Allyl Fluorides: A Tale of Two Mechanisms

The transition to more economically friendly small-chain fluorinated groups is leading to a resurgence in the synthesis and reactivity of fluoroalkenes. One versatile method to obtain a variety of commercially relevant hydrofluoroalkenes involves the catalytic hydrodefluorination (HDF) of fluoroalkenes using silanes. In this work it is shown that copper hydride complexes of tertiary phosphorus ligands (L) can be tuned to achieve selective multiple HDF of fluoroalkenes. In one example, HDF of the hexafluoropropene dimer affords a single isomer of heptafluoro-2-methylpentene in which five fluorines have been selectively replaced with hydrogens. DFT computational studies suggest a distinct HDF mechanisms for L₂CuH (bidentate or bulky monodentate phosphines) and L₃CuH (small cone angle monodentate phosphines) catalysts, allowing for stereocontrol of the HDF of trifluoroethylene.

Entrapment of THF-Stabilized Iridacyclic IrIII Silylenes from Double H-Si Bond Activation and H2 Elimination

The reaction of H₃ SiR (R=Ph, nBu) with cationic η₅ -C₅ Me₅ - (Cp*) and benzo[h]quinolinyl-based iridacycle [1 b]⁺ gives rise to new [(IrH)→SiRH₂ ]⁺ adducts. In the presence of THF these adducts readily undergo elimination of H₂ gas at subambient temperature to form THF-stabilized metallacyclic Ir^III silylene complexes, which were characterized in situ by NMR spectroscopy, trapped in minute amounts by reactive crystallization, and structurally characterized by XRD. Theoretical investigations (static DFT-D reaction-energy profiling, ETS-NOCV) support the promoting role of THF in the H₂ elimination step and the consolidation of the Ir-to-Si interaction in the spontaneous (ΔG<0) formation of Ir silylenes in the presence of THF. Mechanistic insights indicate that the Ir silylene species arising from the [1 b]⁺ /phenylsilane system are relevant catalytic species in the hydrodefluorination of fluoroalkanes.

Stereodivergent hydrodefluorination of gem-difluoroalkenes: selective synthesis of (Z)- and (E)-monofluoroalkenes

We have developed a novel approach for the stereodivergent hydrodefluorination of gem-difluoroalkenes using copper(i) catalysts to obtain stereodefined monofluoroalkenes. Both (Z)- and (E)-terminal monofluoroalkenes were obtained by hydrodefluorination of gem-difluoroalkenes in the presence of copper(i) catalysts and diboron or hydrosilane, respectively, with high stereoselectivity. DFT calculations were conducted to elucidate the stereoselectivity.

Comparative Study of Bifunctional Mononuclear and Dinuclear Amidoiridium Complexes with Chiral C-N Chelating Ligands for the Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation of Ketones

A series of new bifunctional C-N chelating Ir complexes possessing a metal/NH group was synthesized by cyclometalation of optically active primary benzylic amines such as O-silylated (S)-2-amino-2-phenylethanols (1 a and 1 a'), (R)-5-amino-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-benzocycloheptene (1 b), and (R)-1-phenyl-2,2-dimethylpropylamine (1 c). Although treatment of KOtBu with the amine complexes originating from 1 a and 1 a' afforded amido-bridged dinuclear complexes (3 a and 3 a'), more sterically hindered complexes were solely transformed into the coordinatively unsaturated mononuclear amido complexes (3 b and 3 c), which can serve as real catalyst species in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation. The structural difference in the C-N chelate framework markedly affected the catalytic performance. Among them, amido complex 3 c showed a pronounced ability to catalyze the transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone in 2-propanol, even at a low temperature of -30 °C. A hydridoiridium complex (4 c) was also identified in the reaction of 3 c in 2-propanol, which provides mechanistic insights into the enantiodiscriminating step in the hydrogen transfer to prochiral ketones.

Competing reaction pathways of 3,3,3-trifluoropropene at rhodium hydrido, silyl and germyl complexes: C–F bond activation versus hydrogermylation

The reactivity of the Rh complexes [Rh(L)(PEt₃)₃] (L = H, Si(OEt)₃, GePh₃) towards CH₂CHCF₃ was investigated which involve C–F bond activation and germylation reactions.
