Abstract
The formation of catalytically active nano-sized cobalt-containing structures in multicomponent hydrogenation systems based on Co(acac)2 complex and various cocatalysts, namely, AlEt3, AlEt2(OEt), Li-n-Bu, and (PhCH2)MgCl, has been studied for the first time in detail using dynamic EPR spectroscopy. It is shown that after mixing the initial components, paramagnetic structures are formed, which include a fragment containing Co(0) with the electronic configuration 3d9, as well as a fragment bearing an aluminium, lithium, or magnesium atom, depending on the nature of the used cocatalyst. Such bimetallic paramagnetic sites are stabilized by acetylacetonate ligands. In addition, the paramagnetic complex contains the arene molecule(s), and the cobalt atom is bonded with the atom of the corresponding non-transition through the alkyl group of the co-catalyst, in particular through the carbon atom in the α-position with respect to the atom of the non-transition element. Due to the high reactivity of the described intermediates, they, under the conditions of hydrogenation catalysis, are transformed into nano-sized cobalt-containing structures that act as carriers of the catalytically active sites. Furthermore, because of the high reactivity and paramagnetism, such intermediates can be detected only by the EPR technique. The paper describes the whole experimental way of interpreting the EPR signals corresponding to the intermediates, precursors of catalytically active structures. In addition, a possible mathematical model based on the obtained experimental EPR data is presented.

Abstract
The potential of operando X-ray techniques for following the structure, fate, and active site of single-atom catalysts (SACs) is highlighted with emphasis on a synergetic approach of both topics. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and related X-ray techniques have become fascinating tools to characterize solids and they can be applied to almost all the transition metals deriving information about the symmetry, oxidation state, local coordination, and many more structural and electronic properties. SACs, a newly coined concept, recently gained much attention in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. In this way, one can achieve a minimum use of the metal, theoretically highest efficiency, and the design of only one active site-so-called single site catalysts. While single sites are not easy to characterize especially under operating conditions, XAS as local probe together with complementary methods (infrared spectroscopy, electron microscopy) is ideal in this research area to prove the structure of these sites and the dynamic changes during reaction. In this review, starting from their fundamentals, various techniques related to conventional XAS and X-ray photon in/out techniques applied to single sites are discussed with detailed mechanistic and in situ/operando studies. We systematically summarize the design strategies of SACs and outline their exploration with XAS supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and recent machine learning tools.

Abstract
Identification and quantification of redox-active centers at relevant conditions for catalysis is pivotal to understand reaction mechanisms and requires development of advanced operando methods. Herein, we demonstrate operando EPR spectroscopy as an important technique to quantify the oxidation state of representative CrPO4 and EuOCl catalysts during propane oxychlorination, an attractive route for propylene production. In particular, we show that the space-time-yield of C3 H6 correlates with the amount of Cr2+ and Eu2+ ions generated over the catalysts during reaction. These results provide a powerful strategy to gather quantitative understanding of selective alkane oxidation, which could potentially be extrapolated to other functionalization approaches and operating conditions.

Influence of Remaining Acid Sites of an Amorphous Aluminosilicate on the Oligomerization of n-Butenes after Impregnation with Nickel Ions. Catalysts 2020. Abstract
Highly linear octene isomers can be produced from n-butene on industrial scale by using Ni-containing aluminosilicates as heterogeneous catalysts. These catalysts can be prepared by impregnating an aluminosilicate with a Ni(II) salt solution. This leads to a competition between acid-catalyzed and nickel-catalyzed reactions. In this study it is shown that some octene isomers are exclusively formed via an acid-catalyzed mechanism as a result of methyl group migration at the surface of a mesoporous catalyst. Specifically, the isomers 4,4-dimethylhexene (4,4-DMH) and 3-ethyl-2-methylpentene (3E-2MP) exhibit a systematic correlation compared to the amount of 3,4-dimethylhexene (3,4-DMH) formed at acid sites. By analyzing the ratio of 4,4-DMH and/or 3E-2MP to 3,4-DMH in the product spectrum before and after impregnation with a nickel precursor, the extend of acid site covered by nickel ions can be evaluated.

Abstract
Brought to life more than half a century ago and successfully applied for high-value petrochemical intermediates production, nickel-catalyzed olefin oligomerization is still a very dynamic topic, with many fundamental questions to address and industrial challenges to overcome. The unique and versatile reactivity of nickel enables the oligomerization of ethylene, propylene, and butenes into a wide range of oligomers that are highly sought-after in numerous fields to be controlled. Interestingly, both homogeneous and heterogeneous nickel catalysts have been scrutinized and employed to do this. This rare specificity encouraged us to interlink them in this review so as to open up opportunities for further catalyst development and innovation. An in-depth understanding of the reaction mechanisms in play is essential to being able to fine-tune the selectivity and achieve efficiency in the rational design of novel catalytic systems. This review thus provides a complete overview of the subject, compiling the main fundamental/industrial milestones and remaining challenges facing homogeneous/heterogeneous approaches as well as emerging catalytic concepts, with a focus on the last 10 years.

Abstract
Operando EPR, XANES/EXAFS, UV‐Vis and ATR‐IR spectroscopic methods have been coupled for the first time in the same experimental setup for investigation of unclear mechanistic aspects of selective aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol by a Cu/TEMPO catalytic system (TEMPO=2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyloxyl). By multivariate curve resolution with alternating least‐squares fitting (MCR‐ALS) of simultaneously recorded XAS and UV‐Vis data sets, it was found that an initially formed (bpy)(NMI)CuI‐ complex (bpy=2,2′‐bipyridine, NMI=N‐methylimidazole ) is converted to two different CuII species, a mononuclear (bpy)(NMI)(CH3CN)CuII‐OOH species detectable by EPR and ESI‐MS, and an EPR‐silent dinuclear (CH3CN)(bpy)(NMI)CuII(μ‐OH)2⋅CuII (bpy)(NMI) complex. The latter is cleaved in the further course of reaction into (bpy)(NMI)(HOO)CuII‐TEMPO monomers that are also EPR‐silent due to dipolar interaction with bound TEMPO. Both Cu monomers and the Cu dimer are catalytically active in the initial phase of the reaction, yet the dimer is definitely not a major active species nor a resting state since it is irreversibly cleaved in the course of the reaction while catalytic activity is maintained. Gradual formation of non‐reducible CuII leads to slight deactivation at extended reaction times.

Abstract
Sulfated metal-organic framework-808 (S-MOF-808) exhibits strong Brønsted-acidic character which makes it a potential candidate for the heterogeneous acid catalysis. Here, we report the isomerization and oligomerization reactions of light olefins (C3-C6) over S-MOF-808 at relatively low temperatures and ambient pressure. Different products (dimers, isomers, and heavier oligomers) were obtained for different olefins, and effective C-C coupling was observed between isobutene and isopentene. Among the substrates investigated, facile oligomerization occurred very specifically for the structures with an α-double bond and two substituents at the second carbon atom of the main carbon chain. The possible oligomerization mechanism of light olefins was discussed based on the reactivity and selectivity trends. Moreover, the deactivation and regeneration of S-MOF-808 were investigated. The catalyst deactivates via two mechanisms which predominance depends on the substrate and reaction conditions. Above 110 °C, a loss of acidic sites was observed due to water desorption, and the deactivated catalyst could be regenerated by a simple treatment with water vapor. For C5 substrates and unsaturated ethers, the oligomers with increased molecular weight caused deactivation via blocking of the active sites, which could not be readily reversed. These findings offer the first systematic report on carbocation-mediated olefin coupling within MOFs in which the Brønsted acidity is associated with the secondary building units of the MOF itself and is not related to any guest substance hosted within its pore system.
