A Robust and Efficient Pd3 Cluster Catalyst for the Suzuki Reaction and Its Odd Mechanism

Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling Reaction Catalyzed by Al12M (M = Be, Al, C, and P) Superatoms with Different Numbers of Valence Electrons

The exploration of low-cost, efficient, environmentally safe, and selective catalysts for the activation of carbon-halogen bonds has become an important and challenging topic in modern chemistry. With the help of density functional theory (DFT), it is found that phenyl bromide (PhBr) can be efficiently chemisorbed by the Al12M (M = Be, Al, C, and P) superatoms via forming highly polarized Al-Br covalent bonds, where the C-Br bonds of PhBr can be effectively activated through the electron transfer from Al12M. The different electronic structures of these four Al12M superatoms pose a substantial effect on their performances on the activation of PhBr and the catalytic mechanisms of the Suzuki-Miyaura (SM) reaction. Among them, the alkali-metal-like superatom Al12P exhibits the best performance for the activation of PhBr. In particular, Al13 and Al12P with open-shell electronic structures exhibit catalytic performances comparable to those of previously reported catalysts for this coupling reaction. Hence, it is highly expected that Al13 and Al12P could be used as novel superatom catalysts for C-C coupling reactions and, therefore, open up new possibilities to use nonprecious superatoms in catalyzing the activation and transformation of carbon-halogen bonds.

Eight-Electron Copper Nanoclusters for Photothermal Conversion

Owing to distinct physicochemical properties in comparison to gold and silver counterparts, atomically precise copper nanoclusters are attracting embryonic interest in material science. The introduction of copper cluster nanomaterials in more interesting fields is currently urgent and desired. Reported in this work are novel copper nanoclusters of [XCu54Cl12(tBuS)20(NO3)12] (X=S or none, tBuSH=2-methyl-2-propanethiol), which exhibit high performance in photothermal conversion. The clusters have been prepared in one pot and characterized by combinatorial techniques including ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The molecular structure of the clusters, as revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (SCXRD), shows the concentric three-shell Russian doll arrangement of X@Cu14@Cl12@Cu40. Interestingly, the [SCu54Cl12(tBuS)20(NO3)12] cluster contains 8 free valence electrons in its structure, making it the first eight-electron copper nanocluster stabilized by thiolates. More impressively, the clusters possess an effective photothermal conversion (temperature increases by 71 °C within ~50 s, λex=445 nm, 0.5 W cm-2) in a wide wavelength range (either blue or near-infrared). The photothermal conversion can be even driven under irradiation of simulated sunlight (3 sun), endowing the clusters with great potency in solar energy utilization.

Advanced Functionalized Nanoclusters (Cu, Ag, and Au) as Effective Catalyst for Organic Transformation Reactions

A considerable amount of research has been carried out in recent years on synthesizing metal nanoclusters (NCs), which have wide applications in the field of optical materials with non-linear properties, bio-sensing, and catalysis. Aside from being structurally accurate, the atomically precise NCs possess well-defined compositions due to significant tailoring, both at the surface and the core, for certain functionalities. To illustrate the importance of atomically precise metal NCs for catalytic processes, this review emphasizes 1) the recent work on Cu, Ag, and Au NCs with their synthesis, 2) the parameters affecting the activity and selectivity of NCs catalysis, and 3) the discussion on the catalytic potential of these metal NCs. Additionally, metal NCs will facilitate the design of extremely active and selective catalysts for significant reactions by elucidating catalytic mechanisms at the atomic and molecular levels. Future advancements in the science of catalysis are expected to come from the potential to design NCs catalysts at the atomic level.

A Versatile Strategy for the Controlled Synthesis of Atomically Precise Palladium Nanoclusters

The study of the structures, applications, and structure-property relationships of atomically precise metal nanoclusters relies heavily on their controlled synthesis. Although great progress has been made in the controlled synthesis of Group 11 (Cu, Ag, Au) metal nanoclusters, the preparation of Pd nanoclusters remains a grand challenge. Herein, a new, simple, and versatile synthetic strategy for the controlled synthesis of Pd nanoclusters is reported with tailorable structures and functions. The synthesis strategy involves the controllable transformations of Pd4(CO)4(CH3COO)4 in air, allowing the discovery of a family of Pd nanoclusters with well-defined structure and high yield. For example, by treating the Pd4(CO)4(CH3COO)4 with 2,2-dipyridine ligands, two clusters of Pd4 and Pd10 whose metal framework describes the growth of vertex-sharing tetrahedra have been selectively isolated. Interestingly, chiral Pd4 nanoclusters can be gained by virtue of customized chiral pyridine-imine ligands, thus representing a pioneering example to shed light on the hierarchical chiral nanostructures of Pd. This synthetic methodology also tolerates a wide variety of ligands and affords phosphine-ligated Pd nanoclusters in a simple way. It is believed that the successful exploration of the synthetic strategy would simulate the research enthusiasm on both the synthesis and application of atomically precise Pd nanoclusters.

Evidence for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-couplings catalyzed by ligated Pd3-clusters: from cradle to grave

Pdn clusters offer unique selectivity and exploitable reactivity in catalysis. Understanding the behavior of Pdn clusters is thus critical for catalysis, applied synthetic organic chemistry and greener outcomes for precious Pd. The Pd3 cluster, [Pd3(μ-Cl)(μ-PPh2)2(PPh3)3][Cl] (denoted as Pd3Cl2), which exhibits distinctive reactivity, was synthesized and immobilized on a phosphine-functionalized polystyrene resin (denoted as immob-Pd3Cl2). The resultant material served as a tool to study closely the role of Pd3 clusters in a prototypical Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of 4-fluoro-1-bromobenzene and 4-methoxyphenyl boronic acid at varying low Pd ppm concentrations (24, 45, and 68 ppm). Advanced heterogeneity tests such as Hg poisoning and the three-phase test showed that leached mononuclear or nanoparticulate Pd are unlikely to be the major active catalyst species under the reaction conditions tested. EXAFS/XANES analysis from (pre)catalyst and filtered catalysts during and after catalysis has shown the intactness of the triangular structure of the Pd3X2 cluster, with exchange of chloride (X) by bromide during catalytic turnover of bromoarene substrate. This finding is further corroborated by treatment of immob-Pd3Cl2 after catalyzing the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction with excess PPh3, which releases the cluster from the polymer support and so permits direct observation of [Pd3(μ-Br)(μ-PPh2)2(PPh3)3]+ ions by ESI-MS. No evidence is seen for a proposed intermediate in which the bridging halogen on the Pd3 motif is replaced by an aryl group from the organoboronic acid, i.e. formed by a transmetallation-first process. Our findings taken together indicate that the 'Pd3X2' motif is an active catalyst species, which is stabilized by being immobilized, providing a more robust Pd3 cluster catalyst system. Non-immobilized Pd3Cl2 is less stable, as is followed by stepwise XAFS of the non-immobilized Pd3Cl2, which gradually changes to a species consistent with 'Pdx(PPh3)y' type material. Our findings have far-reaching future implications for Pd3 cluster involvement in catalysis, showing that immobilization of Pd3 cluster species offers advantages for rigorous mechanistic examination and applied chemistries.

Advances for Triangular and Sandwich-Shaped All-Metal Aromatics

Much experimental work has been contributed to all-metal σ, π and δ-aromaticity among transition metals, semimetallics and other metals in the past two decades. Before our focused investigations on the properties of triangular and sandwich-shaped all-metal aromatics, A. I. Boldyrev presented general discussions on the concepts of all-metal σ-aromaticity and σ-antiaromaticity for metallo-clusters. Schleyer illustrated that Nucleus-Independent Chemical Shifts (NICS) were among the most authoritative criteria for aromaticity. Ugalde discussed the earlier developments of all-metal aromatic compounds with all possible shapes. Besides the theoretical predictions, many stable all-metal aromatic trinuclear clusters have been isolated as the metallic analogues of either the σ-aromatic molecule's [H3]+ ion or the π-aromatic molecule's [C3H3]+ ion. Different from Hoffman's opinion on all-metal aromaticity, triangular all-metal aromatics were found to hold great potential in applications in coordination chemistry, catalysis, and material science. Triangular all-metal aromatics, which were theoretically proved to conform to the Hückel (4n + 2) rule and possess the smallest aromatic ring, could also play roles as stable ligands during the formation of all-metal sandwiches. The triangular and sandwich-shaped all-metal aromatics have not yet been specifically summarized despite their diversity of existence, puissant developments and various interesting applications. These findings are different from the public opinion that all-metal aromatics would be limited to further applications due to their overstated difficulties in synthesis and uncertain stabilities. Our review will specifically focus on the summarization of theoretical predictions, feasible syntheses and isolations, and multiple applications of triangular and sandwich shaped all-metal aromatics. The appropriateness and necessities of this review will emphasize and disseminate their importance and applications forcefully and in a timely manner.

Direct α-Arylation of Benzo[b]furans Catalyzed by a Pd3 Cluster

As an interim paradigm for the catalysts between those based on more conventional mononuclear molecular Pd complexes and Pdn nanoparticles widely used in organic synthesis, polynuclear palladium clusters have attracted great attention for their unique reactivity and electronic properties. However, the development of Pd cluster catalysts for organic transformations and mechanistic investigations is still largely unexploited. Herein, we disclose the use of trinuclear palladium (Pd3Cl) species as an active catalyst for the direct C-H α-arylation of benzo[b]furans with aryl iodides to afford 2-arylbenzofurans in good yields under mild conditions. With this method, broad substrate adaptability was observed, and several drug intermediates were synthesized in high yields. Mechanistic studies indicated that the Pd3 core most likely remained intact throughout the reaction course.

One-step preparation of Pt/Ag nanoclusters for CO2 transformation

Structurally precise metal nanoclusters with a facile synthetic process and high catalytic performance have been long pursued. These atomically precise nanocatalysts are regarded as model systems to study structure-performance relationships, surface coordination chemistry, and the reaction mechanism of heterogeneous metal catalysts. Nevertheless, the research on silver-based nanoclusters for driving chemical transformations is sluggish in comparison to gold counterparts. Herein, we report the one-step synthesis of Pt/Ag alloy nanoclusters of [PtAg9(C18H12Br3P)7Cl3](C18H12Br3P), which are highly active in catalysing cycloaddition reactions of CO2 and epoxides. The cluster was obtained in a rather simple way with the reduction of silver and platinum salts in the presence of ligands in one pot. The molecular structure of the titled cluster describes the protection of the Pt-centred Ag9 crown by the shell of phosphine ligands and halides. Its electronic structure, as revealed by density function theoretical calculations, adopts a superatomic geometry with 1S21P6 configuration. Interestingly, the cluster displays high activity in the formation of cyclic carbonates from CO2 under mind conditions.

Hydride-doped Ag17Cu10 nanoclusters as high-performance electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction

The atomically precise metal electrocatalysts for driving CO2 reduction reactions are eagerly pursued as they are model systems to identify the active sites, understand the reaction mechanism, and further guide the exploration of efficient and practical metal nanocatalysts. Reported herein is a nanocluster-based electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction, which features a clear geometric and electronic structure, and more importantly excellent performance. The nanocatalysts with the molecular formula of [Ag17Cu10(dppm)4(PhC≡C)20H4]3+ have been obtained in a facile way. The unique metal framework of the cluster, with silver, copper, and hydride included, and dedicated surface structure, with strong (dppm) and labile (alkynyl) ligands coordinated, endow the cluster with excellent performance in electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction to CO. With the atomically precise electrocatalysts in hand, not only high reactivity and selectivity (Faradaic efficiency for CO up to 91.6%) but also long-term stability (24 h), are achieved.

Aryl sulfonate anion stabilized aromatic triangular cation [Pd3]+: syntheses, structures and properties

A series of sulfonate anions paired aromatic triangular palladium clusters 3-7, abbreviated as [Pd3]+[ArSO3]-, were synthesized using a simple "one pot" method, and gave excellent isolated yields (90-95%). Their structures and properties have been fully characterized and further investigated by fluorescence, single crystal X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). In varying organic solvents, they presented apparently stronger absorption and emission in MeOH, driven by the combined interactions of hydrogen bonds and polarity. The crystallographic data demonstrated that the methyl orange ion stabilized complex 7 possessed a D3h symmetric metallic core which was still coplanar and almost equilateral, jointly influenced by the giant hindrance and milder donating effect from the sulfonate. The binding energies for Pdn+ 3d5/2 and Pdn+ 3d3/2 measured by XPS presented at 336.55 and 342.00 eV, respectively. These data were much lower than that of a usual Pd2+ 3d and significantly higher than that of a Pd0 species, further proving the unified palladium valence state (+4/3) in the tri-palladium core and its aromaticity featured by the cyclic electron delocalization.

DppfCuBH4: new reducing agents for the synthesis of ferrocene-functionalized metal nanoclusters

A facile synthesis of atomically precise metal nanoclusters, especially those decorated with functional groups, is the prerequisite for finding applications in special fields and studying structure-and-property relationships. The exploration of simple and efficient synthetic prototypes for introducing functional ligands (such as ferrocene) into cluster moieties is thus of high interest. In this work, a type of reducing agent of dppfCuBH₄ (dppf is 1,1'-bis(diphenyphosphino)ferrocene) is introduced for the first time to prepare ferrocene-functionalized metal nanoclusters. Two new clusters of [Ag₂₅Cu₄(dppf)₆(3-F-PhCC)₁₂Cl₆]³⁺ (1) and [Ag₄(dppf)₅Cl₂]²⁺ (2) have been obtained from the simple synthetic method. The two compounds have been fully characterized by advanced techniques of electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). The total structure of the clusters, as determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction, describes the Ag₁₃@Ag₁₂Cu₄(dppf)₆(3-F-PhCC)₁₂Cl₆ core-shell structure of 1 and [Ag₂Cl(dppf)₂]⁺-dppf-[Ag₂Cl(dppf)₂]⁺ polymeric structure of 2. This work opens the door to employing dppfCuBH₄ as a functional reducing agent to discover many underlying metal nanoclusters and even other nanomaterials which feature ferrocene-groups.

Electronic structure modulation of Pdn (n = 2-5) nanoclusters in the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde

Studying the modulation of nanoclusters at an atomic scale is essential to comprehend the connection between properties and catalytic performance. Herein, we synthesized and characterized Pd_n (n = 2-5) nanoclusters coordinated with di-1-adamantylphosphine. Pd₅ nanoclusters showed the best catalytic performance (conversion = 99.3%, selectivity = 95.3%) for the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde to hydrocinnamaldehyde, with XPS identifying Pd^δ+ as the key active component. This work aimed to explore the relationship among the number of Pd atoms, their electronic structure and catalytic activity.

Simple Approach toward N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Protected Gold Nanoclusters

Little advance has been made toward developing alternative bottom-up synthetic strategies for N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-stabilized gold nanoclusters, although this unique class of nanomaterials has exhibited exciting properties. We report in this work a simple and straightforward approach toward NHC-ligated gold nanoclusters by using imidazolium salts rather than free carbenes or NHC-coordinated gold complexes (NHC-Au-X, X is counterions) as precursors. Illustrated here is a one-pot and one-step preparation of an NHC-stabilized Au₁₃Br₄ cluster that features a distinct molecular formula, surface motifs, and assembling modes via chemical reduction of dpaAu, NaOMe, and ^FNHC^Bn·HBr by NaBH₄ (Hdpa is dipyridylamine; ^FNHC^Bn·HBr is 1,3-dibenzyl-5,6-difluoro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-3-ium bromide). In situ UV-vis and NMR studies have elucidated the base-assisted formation of NHCs from imidazolium salts for the protection of the metal core. This work not only reports a new NHC-ligated superatom that completes the Au₁₃ library, thus facilitating structure-property studies, but also opens the door to explore underlying analogues in a facile and reasonable way.

Non-directed C-H arylation of electron-deficient arenes by synergistic silver and Pd3 cluster catalysis

Transition-metal clusters have attracted great attention in catalysis due to their unique reactivity and electronic properties, especially for novel substrate binding and activation modes at the bridging coordination sites of metal clusters. Although palladium complexes have demonstrated outstanding catalytic performance in various transformations, the catalytic behaviors of polynuclear palladium clusters in many important synthetic methodologies remain much less explored so far. Herein, we disclose the use of an atomically defined tri-nuclear palladium (Pd₃Cl) species as a catalyst precursor in Ag(I)-assisted direct C-H arylation with aryl iodides under mild conditions. This catalyst system leads to the formation of synthetically important biaryls in good yields with high site selectivities without the assistance of directing groups.

An atomically precise Ag18Cu8 nanocluster with rich alkynyl-metal coordination structures and unique SbF6- assembling modes

Elucidating the coordination structures and assembling modes of atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) remains a hot topic as it gives answers to the underlying mechanism of nanomaterials and bulk materials in terms of structure-property relationships. Here we report a novel silver-copper alloy NC featuring rich alkynyl-metal coordination modes and unique SbF₆^- assembling structures. The NC, with the composition of [Ag₁₈Cu₈(dppp)₄(^tBu-C₆H₄CC)₂₂](SbF₆)₄ (dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)-propane), was prepared by a stepwise synthetic approach. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that such a NC featured a staircase-like Ag₁₈Cu₈ kernel, which was protected by hybrid alkynyl and dppp ligands in diverse coordination structures and multiple environments. The structural analysis also revealed the unique function of SbF₆^- in inducing the assembly of cluster moieties, highlighting the importance of counterions in assembling nanomolecules. The diverse coordination structures of the protective ligands with metal ions and the indispensable roles of counterions in assembling the cluster moieties have also been supported by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) studies, making it a model system to showcase the uniqueness of atomically precise metal NCs in illustrating the coordination chemistry of nanomaterials and bulk materials at the molecular level.

Surface and Interface Coordination Chemistry Learned from Model Heterogeneous Metal Nanocatalysts: From Atomically Dispersed Catalysts to Atomically Precise Clusters

The surface and interface coordination structures of heterogeneous metal catalysts are crucial to their catalytic performance. However, the complicated surface and interface structures of heterogeneous catalysts make it challenging to identify the molecular-level structure of their active sites and thus precisely control their performance. To address this challenge, atomically dispersed metal catalysts (ADMCs) and ligand-protected atomically precise metal clusters (APMCs) have been emerging as two important classes of model heterogeneous catalysts in recent years, helping to build bridge between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. This review illustrates how the surface and interface coordination chemistry of these two types of model catalysts determines the catalytic performance from multiple dimensions. The section of ADMCs starts with the local coordination structure of metal sites at the metal-support interface, and then focuses on the effects of coordinating atoms, including their basicity and hardness/softness. Studies are also summarized to discuss the cooperativity achieved by dual metal sites and remote effects. In the section of APMCs, the roles of surface ligands and supports in determining the catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability of APMCs are illustrated. Finally, some personal perspectives on the further development of surface coordination and interface chemistry for model heterogeneous metal catalysts are presented.

Guiding the High-Yield Synthesis of NHC-Ligated Gold Nanoclusters by 19F NMR Spectroscopy

Optimizing the synthesis of atomically precise metal nanoclusters by virtue of molecular tools is highly desirable but quite challenging. Herein we report how ¹⁹F NMR spectroscopy can be used to guide the high-yield synthesis of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-stabilized gold nanoclusters. In spite of little difference, ¹⁹F NMR signals of fluoro-incorporated NHCs (^FNHC) are highly sensitive to the tiny change in their surrounding chemical environments with different N-substituents, metals, or anions, thus providing a convenient strategy to discriminate species in reaction mixtures. By using ¹⁹F NMR, we first disclosed that the one-pot reduction of ^FNHC-Au-X (X is halide) yields multiple compounds, including cluster compounds and also a large amount of highly stable [Au(^FNHC)₂]⁺ byproduct. The detailed quantitative ¹⁹F NMR analyses over the reductive synthesis of NHC-stabilized Au nanoclusters reveal that the formation of the di-NHC complex is deleterious to the high-yield synthesis of NHC-stabilized Au nanoclusters. With the understanding, the reaction kinetic was then slowed by controlling the reduction rate to achieve the high yield of a [Au₂₄(^FNHC)₁₄X₂H₃]³⁺ nanocluster with a unique structure. The strategy demonstrated in this work is expected to provide an effective tool to guide the high-yield synthesis of organic ligand-stabilized metal nanoclusters.

The Road Less Traveled: Unconventional Site Selectivity in Palladium-Catalyzed Cross-Couplings of Dihalogenated N-Heteroarenes

The vast majority (≥90%) of literature reports agree on the regiochemical outcomes of Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions for most classes of dihalogenated N-heteroarenes. Despite a well-established mechanistic rationale for typical selectivity, several examples reveal that changes to the catalyst can switch site selectivity, leading to the unconventional product. In this Perspective, we survey these unusual cases in which divergent selectivity is controlled by ligands or catalyst speciation. In some cases, the mechanistic origin of inverted selectivity has been established, but in others the mechanism remains unknown. This Perspective concludes with a discussion of remaining challenges and opportunities for the field of site-selective cross-coupling. These include developing a better understanding of oxidative addition mechanisms, understanding the role of catalyst speciation on selectivity, establishing an explanation for the influence of ring substituents on regiochemical outcome, inverting selectivity for some "stubborn" classes of substrates, and minimizing unwanted over-reaction of di- and polyhalogenated substrates.

Evolution of Triangular All-Metal Aromatic Complexes from Bonding Quandaries to Powerful Catalytic Platforms

This manuscript describes an overview on the literature detailing the observation of trinuclear complexes that present delocalized metal-metal bonds similar to those of regular aromatics, which are formed combining main group elements. A particular emphasis is given to the structural and electronic features of aromatic clusters that are sufficiently stable to allow their isolation. In parallel to the description of their key bonding properties, the work presents reported catalytic applications of these complexes, which already span from elaborated C-C-forming cascades to highly efficient cross-coupling methods. These examples present peculiar aspects of the unique reactivity exerted by all-metal aromatic complexes, which can often be superior to their established, popular mononuclear peers in terms of chemoselectivity and chemical robustness.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Stabilized Gold Nanoclusters with Organometallic Motifs for Promoting Catalysis

The complexity of heterogeneous metal catalysts makes it challenging to gain insights into their catalytic mechanisms. Thus, there exists a huge gap between heterogeneous catalysis and organometallic catalysis. With the success in the preparation of highly robust atomically precise metal nanocluster catalysts (i.e., [Au₁₆(NHC-1)₅(PA)₃Br₂]³⁺ and [Au₁₇(NHC-1)₄(PA)₄Br₄]⁺, where NHC-1 is a bidentate NHC ligand, and PA is phenylacetylide) with surface organometallic motifs anchored on the metallic core, we demonstrate in this work how the metallic core works synergistically with the surface organometallic motifs to enhance the catalysis. More importantly, the discovery allows the development of highly stable and recyclable heterogeneous metal catalysts to achieve efficient hydroamination of alkynes with an extremely low catalyst dosage (0.002 mol %), helping bridge the gap between heterogeneous and homogeneous metal catalysis. The surface modification of metal nanocatalysts with organometallic motifs provides a new design principle of metal catalysts with enhanced catalysis.

Exploiting the Fracture in Metal-Organic Frameworks: A General Strategy for Bifunctional Atom-Precise Nanocluster/ZIF-8(300 °C) Composites

Atom-precise nanoclusters-metal-organic framework (APNC/MOF) composites, as bifunctional material with well-defined structures, have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Despite the progress made to date, there is an urgent need to develop a generic and scalable approach for all APNCs. Herein, the authors present the Exploiting Fracture Strategy (EFS) and successfully construct a super-stable bifunctional APNC/ZIF-8(300 °C) composite overcoming the limitations of previous strategies in selecting APNCs. The EFS utilizes the fracture of ZnN in ZIF-8 after annealing at 300 °C. This method is suitable for all kinds of S/P protected APNCs with different sizes, including uncharged clusters Au₁ Ag₃₉ , Ag₄₀ , negatively charged Au₁₂ Ag₃₂ , positively charged Ag₄₆ Au₂₄ , Au₄ Cu₄ and P-ligand-protected Pd₃ Cl. Importantly, the generated APNC/MOF show significantly improved performances, for example, the activities of Au₁₂ Ag₃₂ /ZIF-8(300°C), Au₄ Cu₄ /ZIF-8(300°C), and Au₁ Ag₃₉ /ZIF-8(300°C) in the corresponding reactions are higher than those of Au₁₂ Ag₃₂ , Au₄ Cu₄ , and Au₁ Ag₃₉ , respectively. In particular, Au₁₂ Ag₃₂ /ZIF-8(300 °C) shows higher activity than Au₁₂ Ag₃₂ @ZIF-8. Therefore, this work offers guidance for the design of bifunctional APNC/MOF composites with excellent optimization of properties and opens up new horizons for future related nanomaterial studies and nanocatalyst designs.

Transmetalation of boronic acids and their derivatives: mechanistic elucidation and relevance to catalysis

The Suzuki-Miyaura reaction (the cross-coupling reaction of boronic acids with organic halides catalysed by Pd complexes) has been recognised as a useful synthetic organic reaction that forms a C(sp²)-C(sp²) bond. The catalytic cycle of the reaction involves the transmetalation of aryl- and alkenylboronic acids with Pd(II) complexes. It migrates the aryl and alkenyl groups of boronic acid to Pd and produces a Pd-C bond. Many studies have investigated the mechanism of transmetalation. They elucidated the mechanism of the organometallic reaction and its role as a fundamental step in catalytic reactions. This perspective reviews studies on the transmetalation of aryl- and alkenylboronic acids with Pd(II) complexes. Emphasis was laid on the structures and chemical properties of the intermediate Pd complexes and the effects of OH^- on the pathways of the catalytic Suzuki-Miyaura reaction. The reactions of arylboronic acids with Rh(I)-OH complexes were investigated, which are relevant to the mechanism of Rh-catalysed addition of aryl boronic acids to enones and aldehydes. Recent studies on the transmetalation of boronic acids with other late transition metals such as Fe(II), Co(I), Pt(II), Au(III), and Au(I) are presented with the related catalytic reactions and their utilisation in the synthesis of aromatic molecules and π-conjugated materials.

Is Aromaticity a Driving Force in Catalytic Cycles? A Case from the Cycloisomerization of Enynes Catalyzed by All-Metal Aromatic Pd3+ Clusters and Carboxylic Acids

The work details a mechanistic study based on density functional theory modeling on the cycloisomerization of polyunsaturated substrates catalyzed by all-metal aromatic tripalladium complexes and carboxylic acids. These clusters are an emerging class of catalysts for a variety of relevant transformations, including C-C forming processes that occur under mild conditions and display synthetic features complementary to those of established mononuclear complexes. This study is the first computational one devoted to the comprehension of the series of elementary steps involved in a synthetic transformation catalyzed by an all-metal aromatic complex. Present results confirm previous experimental hints on the striking mechanistic differences exerted by these clusters with respect to the usual cyclization pathways of related substrates. Moreover, the catalytic cycle involving present all-metal aromatic clusters closely parallels the mechanism of the aromatic substitution of regular arenes.

Inter/Intramolecular Cascade of 1,6-Enynes Catalyzed by All-Metal Aromatic Tripalladium Complexes and Carboxylic Acids

Trinuclear all-metal aromatic clusters are an original class of molecules with a cyclic and planar metal core. Characterized by peculiar metal-metal delocalized bonds, they represent a new frontier in transition-metal catalysis. We report a study on C-C-forming reactions of polyunsaturated substrates catalyzed by trinuclear all-metal aromatic palladium clusters. The synthesis of two new families of tricyclic compounds was obtained with a broad functional group tolerance under mild reaction conditions. A peculiar regio- and diastereoselectivity characterized the method, demonstrating that trinuclear palladium complexes are complementary to their popular mononuclear peers. Furthermore, preliminary studies on the mechanism of these polycyclization reactions revealed unique features of the homogeneous catalytic system.

Triangular Palladium Cluster from Activation of the Si-Si Bond in a Disilane with Phosphine Pendants

A disilane that contains two diphenylphosphino moieties, (Ph₂PCH₂)Ph₂Si-SiPh₂(CH₂PPh), was readily synthesized from the reaction of ClPh₂Si-SiPh₂Cl with (tmeda)Li(CH₂PPh₂). Treatment of the thus-obtained disilane with the palladium(0) precursor [Pd(CN^tBu)₂]₃ led to the exclusive formation of a trinuclear palladium cluster in which three palladium atoms are arranged in a triangular fashion. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the obtained triangular cluster revealed that novel silylphosphido chelating ligands were formed via a skeletal rearrangement of the ligand framework.

Unraveling the Nucleation Process from a Au(I)-SR Complex to Transition-Size Nanoclusters

Atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters provide a critical benchmark for the fundamental research of the origin of condensed matter because they retain the original state of the metal bonds. Also, knowledge about the transition from organometallic complexes to a nanoclusters is important for understanding the structural evolution of the nanoclusters, particularly their nucleation mechanism. Herein, three transition-size gold nanoclusters are prepared via a controlled diphosphine-mediated top-down routine. Starting from small-size nanoclusters, three new nanoclusters including Au₁₃(SAdm)₈(L⁴)₂(BPh₄) (Au₁₃), Au₁₄(S-c-C₆H₁₁)₁₀L⁴ (Au₁₄), and Au₁₆(S-c-C₆H₁₁)₁₁L^Ph* (Au₁₆) are obtained by controlled clipping on the surface and kernel of initial nanoclusters. Combining their atomically precise structures with DFT theoretical calculations, the overall atom-by-atom structural evolution process from Au₁₂(SR)₁₂ (0 e^-) to Au₁₈(SR)₁₄ (4 e^-) is mapped out. In addition, studies on their electronic structures show that the evolution from an organometallic complex to nanoclusters is accompanied by a dramatic decrease in the HOMO-LUMO gaps. Most importantly, the formation of the first Au-Au bond is captured in the "Au₄S₄ to Au₅" nucleation process from Au₁₂(SR)₁₂ complex to the Au₁₃ nanocluster. This work provides a deep insight into the origin of inner core in Au NCs and their structural transition relationship with metal complexes.

Reactivity of a Dinuclear PdI Complex [Pd2(μ-PPh2)(μ2-OAc)(PPh3)2] with PPh3: Implications for Cross-Coupling Catalysis Using the Ubiquitous Pd(OAc)2/nPPh3 Catalyst System

[Pd^I₂(μ-PPh₂)(μ₂-OAc)(PPh₃)₂] is the reduction product of Pd^II(OAc)₂(PPh₃)₂, generated by reaction of ‘Pd(OAc)₂’ with two equivalents of PPh₃. Here, we report that the reaction of [Pd^I₂(μ-PPh₂)(μ₂-OAc)(PPh₃)₂] with PPh₃ results in a nuanced disproportionation reaction, forming [Pd⁰(PPh₃)₃] and a phosphinito-bridged Pd^I-dinuclear complex, namely [Pd^I₂(μ-PPh₂){κ₂-P,O-μ-P(O)Ph₂}(κ-PPh₃)₂]. The latter complex is proposed to form by abstraction of an oxygen atom from an acetate ligand at Pd. A mechanism for the formal reduction of a putative Pd^II disproportionation species to the observed Pd^I complex is postulated. Upon reaction of the mixture of [Pd⁰(PPh)₃] and [Pd^I₂(μ-PPh₂){κ₂-P,O-μ-P(O)Ph₂}(κ-PPh₃)₂] with 2-bromopyridine, the former Pd⁰ complex undergoes a fast oxidative addition reaction, while the latter dinuclear Pd^I complex converts slowly to a tripalladium cluster, of the type [Pd₃(μ-X)(μ-PPh₂)₂(PPh₃)₃]X, with an overall 4/3 oxidation state per Pd. Our findings reveal complexity associated with the precatalyst activation step for the ubiquitous ‘Pd(OAc)₂’/nPPh₃ catalyst system, with implications for cross-coupling catalysis.

Photoelectric properties of aromatic triangular tri-palladium complexes and their catalytic applications in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction

The photoelectric properties and catalytic activities of substituted triphenylphosphine and sulfur/selenium ligand supported aromatic triangular tri-palladium complexes 1-4, abbreviated as [Pd₃]⁺, were investigated. The cyclic voltammogram of [Pd₃]⁺ in CH₃CN-ⁿBu₄NPF₆ showed a single quasi-reversible wave which was consistent with their robust property and provided preliminary proof for their electron transfer processes in catalysis. With excitation at 267 nm, [Pd₃]⁺ exhibited strong ratiometric fluorescence at 550 and 780 nm at a temperature gradient from 77 K to 287 K. These peculiar triangular tri-palladium complexes showed excellent catalytic activities and exclusive reactivity with aryl iodides over the other halogenated aromatics in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction. The electronic and steric hindrance effects of substituents on the aryl iodides and aryl boronic acids including heteroaromatics like pyridine, pyrazine and thiophenes were explored and most substrates achieved up to 99% of yields. (2-[1,1'-Biphenyl]-2-ylbenzothiazole) which was analogous to the selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors was also synthesized with our tri-palladium catalyst and gave good isolated yield (94%). The study of the catalytic process revealed that the mechanism of the reaction may involve the replacement of the sulphur ligand on [Pd₃]⁺ by iodine from aryl iodides, which was beneficial for the matching of C-I bond energy.

A Dichotomy in Cross-Coupling Site Selectivity in a Dihalogenated Heteroarene: Influence of Mononuclear Pd, Pd Clusters, and Pd Nanoparticles-the Case for Exploiting Pd Catalyst Speciation

Site-selective dihalogenated heteroarene cross-coupling with organometallic reagents usually occurs at the halogen proximal to the heteroatom, enabled by intrinsic relative electrophilicity, particularly in strongly polarized systems. An archetypical example is the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling (SMCC) of 2,4-dibromopyridine with organoboron species, which typically exhibit C2-arylation site-selectivity using mononuclear Pd (pre)catalysts. Given that Pd speciation, particularly aggregation, is known to lead to the formation of catalytically competent multinuclear Pdn species, the influence of these species on cross-coupling site-selectivity remains largely unknown. Herein, we disclose that multinuclear Pd species, in the form of Pd3-type clusters and nanoparticles, switch arylation site-selectivity from C2 to C4, in 2,4-dibromopyridine cross-couplings with both organoboronic acids (SMCC reactions) and Grignard reagents (Kumada-type reactions). The Pd/ligand ratio and the presence of suitable stabilizing salts were found to be critically important in switching the site-selectivity. More generally, this study provides experimental evidence that aggregated Pd catalyst species not only are catalytically competent but also alter reaction outcomes through changes in product selectivity.

Pd nanoparticles loaded on modified chitosan-Unye bentonite microcapsules: A reusable nanocatalyst for Sonogashira coupling reaction

This work investigates the preparation of a catalytic complex of palladium nanoparticles supported on novel Schiff base modified chitosan-Unye bentonite microcapsules (Pd NPs@CS-UN). The complex has been characterized by FT-IR, EDS, XRD, TEM, HRTEM, Raman, ICP-OES and elemental mapping analyses. Pd NPs@CS-UN was used as a catalyst for Sonogashira coupling reactions between aryl halides and acetylenes, employing K₂CO₃ as the base and EtOH as a green solvent under aerobic conditions in which it showed high efficacy. Pd NPs@CS-UN was regenerated by filtration after the completion of the reaction. This catalytic process has many advantages including simple methodology, high yields, and easy work-up. The catalytic performance does not notably change even after five consecutive runs.

Pd(ii)-Based polyoxometalate polymers as highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts for Suzuki–Miyaura reactions

Five Pd(ii)/polyoxometalate catalysts with a unique atomic arrangement and high Pd loading were synthesized under solvothermal conditions, and their structures were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Plasma-Assisted Chain Reactions of Rh3+ Clusters with Dinitrogen: N≡N Bond Dissociation

Dinitrogen activation is known as one of the most challenging subjects in chemistry. A number of well-defined metal complexes, nitrides, and clusters have been studied that show catalysis for dinitrogen activation. However, direct evidence of a complete cleavage of the N≡N triple bond at mild conditions is rather limited to date. Herein, we report a study on the dissociation of N₂ on small rhodium clusters assisted by surface plasma radiation. From mass spectrometry observation, a few rhodium nitride clusters with an odd number of nitrogen atoms are produced, such as the Rh₃N_2m-1⁺ (m = 1-5) series, indicative of N≡N bond dissociation in the mild plasma atmosphere. Interestingly, Rh₃N₇⁺ is identified with outstanding mass abundance among the Rh_nN_2m-1⁺ products, and its ground-state structure is in the form of Rh₃N(N₂)₃⁺ by capping a nitrogen atom on the top of Rh₃⁺ plane and hanging three N₂ molecules beneath the three Rh atoms respectively, giving rise to a C_3v symmetry and excellent stability. We demonstrate the catalysis of such a three-atom rhodium cluster and reveal a dinitrogen activation strategy by thermodynamics- and dynamics- favorable chain reactions of multiple N₂ molecules with two rhodium clusters under plasma atmosphere.

Minimalization of Metallic Pd Formation in Suzuki Reaction with a Solid-State Organometallic Catalyst

Suzuki reaction usually uses palladium (Pd) complexes to accommodate a wide range of substrates. In pursuing greener synthesis, immobilization of Pd complexes with various support materials has shown promising potential. Although this approach can give stable conversion, initially immobilized Pd ions are largely reduced to Pd⁰ aggregates and turned essentially into supported nanoparticles after use, which departs from its original intention of complex immobilization and thus hampers its activity. Herein, we immobilize noble metal ions into a spherical thiolated organosilica. This new type of catalysts can catalyze Suzuki reaction homogeneously via leaching out Pd ions and shuttling them back after the reaction. The excellent reusability attained can be attributed to minimalization of forming metallic palladium. Thus, the developed catalysts can be viewed as a two-way device to release and to restore metal ions for homogeneous catalysis.
