Plausible Rh(V) Intermediates in Catalytic C–H Activation Reactions

RhRu Bimetallic Oxide Cluster Catalysts for Cross-Dehydrogenative Coupling of Arenes and Carboxylic Acids

Noble-metal-based bimetallic oxide clusters are promising novel catalysts. In this study, we developed carbon-supported RhRu bimetallic oxide clusters (RhRuOx/C) with a mean diameter of 1.2 nm, which showed remarkable catalytic activity for the cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) of arenes and carboxylic acids with O2 as the sole oxidant. RhRu bimetallic oxide cluster formation was confirmed by aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Kinetic isotope and substituent effects indicated that arene C-H bond cleavage was the rate-determining step and proceeded via electrophilic concerted metalation-deprotonation mechanism, with a carboxylate as an internal base. Density functional theory calculations supported the proposed mechanism and indicated that the active center for C-H bond activation was Rh(V) rather than Rh(III), while Ru enhanced the electrophilicity of the Rh(V) site by decreasing the negative charge of the surrounding oxygen atoms. Electron-rich arenes showed relatively high reactivity for the RhRuOx/C-catalyzed CDC reaction, and both aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids were applicable to the reaction. The RhRuOx/C catalyst is promising for the CDC reaction of arenes and carboxylic acids to produce aryl esters. This work promotes the development of noble-metal-based bimetallic oxide clusters for C-H bond activation reactions.

Rh(III)-catalyzed atroposelective C-H alkynylation of 1-aryl isoquinolines with hypervalent iodine-alkyne reagents

An efficient Rh(III)-catalyzed enantioselective C-H alkynylation of isoquinolines is disclosed. The C-H alkynylation of 1-aryl isoquinolines with hypervalent iodine-alkyne reagents proceeded in DMA at room temperature in the presence of 2.5 mol% chiral SCpRh(III) complex along with 20 mol% AgSbF6, providing axially chiral alkynylated 1-aryl isoquinolines in excellent yields (up to 93%) and enantioselectivity (up to 95% ee). The diverse transformations of the product further enhance the potential utility of this reaction.

Recent Advances in the Nickel-Catalyzed Alkylation of C-H Bonds

Functionalization of C-H bonds has emerged as a powerful strategy for converting inert, nonfunctional C-H bonds into their reactive counterparts. A wide range of C-H bond functionalization reactions has become possible by the catalysis of metals, typically from the second row of transition metals. First-row transition metals can also catalyze C-H functionalization, and they have the merits of greater earth-abundance, lower cost and better environmental friendliness in comparison to their second-row counterparts. C-H bond alkylation is a particularly important C-H functionalization reaction due to its chemical significance and its applications in natural product synthesis. This review covers Ni-catalyzed C-H bond alkylation reactions using alkyl halides and olefins as alkyl sources.

Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed regioselective cyclization of aromatic amides with allenes

A new Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed regioselective cyclization reaction of aromatic amides with allenes is reported. The use of allenyl derivatives bearing a directing-group assistant as a reaction promoter was the key to the success of this protocol. In this catalytic system, N-(pivaloyloxy)benzamide substrates react with allenes via Rh-σ-alkenyl intermediates, while N-(pivaloyloxy) indol substrates react via Rh-π-allyl intermediates. These reactions were characterized by mild reaction conditions, a broad substrate scope, and high functional-group compatibility to yield several high-value isoquinolinone and pyrimido[1,6-a]indol-1(2H)-one skeleton-containing compounds. The synthetic applications and primary mechanisms were also investigated.

The crucial role of silver(I)-salts as additives in C-H activation reactions: overall analysis of their versatility and applicability

Transition-metal catalyzed C-H activation reactions have been proven to be useful methodologies for the assembly of synthetically meaningful molecules. This approach bears intrinsic peculiarities that are important to be studied and comprehended in order to achieve its best performance. One example is the use of additives for the in situ generation of catalytically active species. This strategy varies according to the type of additive and the nature of the pre-catalyst that is being used. Thus, silver(I)-salts have proven to play an important role, due to the resulting high reactivity derived from the pre-catalysts of the main transition metals used so far. While being powerful and versatile, the use of silver-based additives can raise concerns, since superstoichiometric amounts of silver(I)-salts are typically required. Therefore, it is crucial to first understand the role of silver(I) salts as additives, in order to wisely overcome this barrier and shift towards silver-free systems.

Regioselective Iridium-Catalyzed C8-H Borylation of 4-Quinolones via Transient O-Borylated Quinolines

The quinolone-quinoline tautomerization is harnessed to effect the regioselective C8-borylation of biologically important 4-quinolones by using [Ir(OMe)(cod)]2 as the catalyst precursor, the silica-supported monodentate phosphine Si-SMAP as the ligand, and B2 pin2 as the boron source. Initially, O-borylation of the quinoline tautomer takes place. Critically, the newly formed 4-(pinBO)-quinolines then undergo N-directed selective Ir-catalyzed borylation at C8. Hydrolysis of the OBpin moiety on workup returns the system to the quinolone tautomer. The C8-borylated quinolines were converted to their corresponding potassium trifluoroborate (BF3 K) salts and to their C8-chlorinated quinolone derivatives. The two-step C-H borylation-chlorination reaction sequence resulted in various C8-Cl quinolones in good yields. Conversion to C8-OH-, C8-NH2 -, and C8-Ar-substituted quinolones was also feasible by using this methodology.

Synthesis of Indole-Substituted Trifluoromethyl Sulfonium Ylides by Cp*Rh(III)-Catalyzed Diazo-carbenoid Addition to Trifluoromethylthioether

The indole-substituted trifluoromethyl sulfonium ylide has been developed via Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed diazo-carbenoid addition to trifluoromethylthioether and is the first example of an Rh(III)-catalyzed diazo-carbenoid addition reaction with trifluoromethylthioether. Several kinds of indole-substituted trifluoromethyl sulfonium ylide were constructed under mild reaction conditions. The reported method exhibited high functional group compatibility and broad substrate scope. In addition, the protocol was found to be complementary to the method disclosed by a Rh(II) catalyst.

Rh(III)-Catalyzed C-H Functionalization/Annulation of 1-Arylindazolones: Divergent Synthesis of Fused Indazolones and Allyl Indazolones

Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H/N-H annulation and C-H allylation of phenylindazolones have been realized by employing 5-methylene-1,3-dioxan-2-one and 4-vinyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-one as scalable cross-coupling partners, delivering functionalized indazolone fused heterocycles and branched and linear allyl indazolones respectively in moderate to high yield. These divergent synthesis protocols showcase mild conditions, broad substrate scope, and high functional-group compatibility. In addition, scale-up synthesis and preliminary mechanistic exploratory were also accomplished.

Rhodium(III)-catalyzed C-H alkylation of arylhydrophthalazinediones with α-Cl ketones as sp3-carbon alkylated agents

A Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H bond direct alkylation between 2-arylphthalazine-1,4-diones and α-Cl ketones, which are sp³-carbon synthons, under mild conditions has been disclosed. The corresponding phthalazine derivatives are readily obtained in moderate to excellent yields with a wide range of substrates and high functional group tolerance. The practicality and utility of this method are demonstrated by the derivatization of the product.

Rhodium-catalyzed aminoacylation of alkenes via carbonylative C–H activation toward poly(hetero)cyclic alkylarylketones

This work discloses the facile construction of polyheterocyclic alkylarylketones by the rhodium-catalyzed carbonylative aminoacylation of alkenes involving C–H activation, which provides molecules as candidates for the screening of antitumor agents.

Electrochemical Rhodium-Catalyzed C-H Cyclodimerization of Alkynes to Access Diverse Functionalized Naphthalenes: Involvement of RhIV/V and RhI Dual Catalysis

The first electrochemical rhodium-catalyzed C-H cyclodimerization of alkynes for the direct construction of functionalized naphthalenes was reported. The practicality and synthetic value of this strategy were demonstrated by the readily accessible scale-up synthesis and transformation of the products. Detailed mechanistic studies evidenced that electricity played an important role during the electrochemical disproportionation (ECD) process to generate and maintain the catalytically active Rh^IV/V and Rh^I species, which conducted the direct C-H activation.

How Strain-Release Determines Chemoselectivity: A Mechanistic Study of Rhodium-Catalyzed Bicyclo[1.1.0]butane Activation

Bicyclo[1.1.0]butane (BCB) derivatives are versatile coupling partners, and various reaction modes for their activation and transformation have been proposed. In this work, three BCB-activation modes in Rh-catalyzed BCB transformations that construct diastereoselective α-quaternary β-lactones were investigated by density functional theory calculations. Our results show that, compared with C1-C3 insertion and C-C3 oxidative addition, C2-C3 oxidative addition is more favorable. The whole catalytic cycle involves five main steps: C-H activation, oxidative addition, β-C elimination/reductive elimination, Rh walking, and aldehyde insertion/protonation. Independent gradient model, intrinsic reaction coordinate, distortion-interaction energy, and Laplacian electron-density analyses were carried out to investigate the mode of BCB activation. Our calculation also showed that aldehyde-insertion is the diastereoselectivity determining step, which is controlled by the steric effect between the ligand, methyl group, and aldehyde.

Rh(i)-catalyzed dimerization of ene-vinylidenecyclopropanes for the construction of spiro[4,5]decanes and mechanistic studies

Rh(i) complex catalyzed dimerization of ene-vinylidenecyclopropanes took place smoothly to construct a series of products containing spiro[4,5]decane skeletons featuring a simple operation procedure, mild reaction conditions, and good functional group tolerance. In this paper, the combination of experimental and computational studies reveals a counterion-assisted Rh(i)-Rh(iii)-Rh(v)-Rh(iii)-Rh(i) catalytic cycle involving tandem oxidative cyclometallation/reductive elimination/selective oxidative addition/selective reductive elimination/reductive elimination steps; in addition, a pentavalent spiro-rhodium intermediate is identified as the key intermediate in this dimerization reaction upon DFT calculation.

Synthesis of Tetrahydrocarbazol-4-ones via Rh(III)-Catalyzed C-H Activation/Annulation of Arylhydrazines with Iodonium Ylides

The rhodium(III)-catalyzed C-H activation followed by intramolecular annulation reactions between arylhydrazines and iodonium ylides under suitable conditions has been described. Tetrahydrocarbazol-4-ones are readily achieved with moderate to excellent yields. The synthetic protocol features a wide range of substrates with high functional group tolerance. The gram-scale reaction and derivatization of the product demonstrate the synthetic practicality and utilization of this method.

Facilitating Rh-Catalyzed C-H Alkylation of (Hetero)arenes and 6-Arylpurine Nucleosides (Nucleotides) with Electrochemistry

An electrochemical approach to promote the ortho-C-H alkylation of (hetero)arenes via rhodium catalysis under mild conditions is described. This approach features mild conditions with high levels of regio- and monoselectivity that tolerate a variety of aromatic and heteroaromatic groups and offers a widely applicable method for late-stage diversification of complex molecular architectures including tryptophan, estrone, diazepam, nucleosides, and nucleotides. Alkyl boronic acids and esters and alkyl trifluoroborates are demonstrated as suitable coupling partners. The isolation of key rhodium intermediates and mechanistic studies provided strong support for a rhodium(III/IV or V) regime.

Thioether-directed Rh(III)-catalyzed peri-selective acyloxylation of arenes

A thioether directed acyloxylation of arenes has been realized via Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation and subsequent coupling with carboxylic acids. This new method showed high functional group compatibility and broad substrate scope. Primary mechanistic studies have been conducted and a tentative reaction mechanism was proposed. It represents the first example of a thioether-directed Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed C(sp²)-H acyloxylation reaction.

A cascade indazolone-directed Ir(iii)- and Rh(iii)-catalyzed C(sp2)–H functionalization/[4 + 2] annulation of 1-arylindazolones with sulfoxonium ylides to access chemically divergent 8H-indazolo [1,2-a]cinnolines

Rhodium Indenyl NHC and Fluorenyl-Tethered NHC Half-Sandwich Complexes: Synthesis, Structures and Applications in the Catalytic C-H Borylation of Arenes and Alkanes

Indenyl (Ind) rhodium N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes [Rh(η⁵ -Ind)(NHC)(L)] were synthesised for 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene (SIPr) with L=C₂ H₄ (1), CO (2 a) and cyclooctene (COE; 3), for 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene (SIMes) with L=CO (2 b) and COE (4), and 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IMes) with L=CO (2 c) and COE (5). Reaction of SIPr with [Rh(Cp*)(C₂ H₄ )₂ ] did not give the desired SIPr complex, thus demonstrating the "indenyl effect" in the synthesis of 1. Oxidative addition of HSi(OEt)₃ to 3 proceeded under mild conditions to give the Rh silyl hydride complex [Rh(Ind){Si(OEt)₃ }(H)(SIPr)] (6) with loss of COE. Tethered-fluorenyl NHC rhodium complexes [Rh{(η⁵ -C₁₃ H₈ )C₂ H₄ N(C)C₂ H_x NR}(L)] (x=4, R=Dipp, L=C₂ H₄ : 11; L=COE: 12; L=CO: 13; R=Mes, L=COE: 14; L=CO: 15; x=2, R=Me, L=COE: 16; L=CO: 17) were synthesised in low yields (5-31 %) in comparison to good yields for the monodentate complexes (49-79 %). Compounds 3 and 1, which contain labile alkene ligands, were successful catalysts for the catalytic borylation of benzene with B₂ pin₂ (Bpin=pinacolboronate, 97 and 93 % PhBpin respectively with 5 mol % catalyst, 24 h, 80 °C), with SIPr giving a more active catalyst than SIMes or IMes. Fluorenyl-tethered NHC complexes were much less active as borylation catalysts, and the carbonyl complexes were inactive. The borylation of toluene, biphenyl, anisole and diphenyl ether proceeded to give meta substitutions as the major product, with smaller amounts of para substitution and almost no ortho product. The borylation of octane and decane with B₂ pin₂ at 120 and 140 °C, respectively, was monitored by ¹¹ B NMR spectroscopy, which showed high conversions into octyl and decylBpin over 4-7 days, thus demonstrating catalysed sp³ C-H borylation with new piano stool rhodium indenyl complexes. Irradiation of the monodentate complexes with 400 or 420 nm light confirmed the ready dissociation of C₂ H₄ and COE ligands, whereas CO complexes were inert. Evidence for C-H bond activation in the alkyl groups of the NHC ligands was obtained.

Cp*Rh(III)-Catalyzed Regioselective C(sp3)-H Electrophilic Trifluoromethylthiolation of 8-Methylquinolines

Rh(III)-catalyzed regioselective trifluoromethylthiolation of the unactivated C(sp³)-H bond of 8-methylquinolines with bench-stable electrophilic trifluoromethylthiolating reagent via C(sp³)-H activation is explored. Various substituted 8-methylquinolines provided the products in good yields with high regioselectivity. Current reaction conditions are also applicable for the late-stage functionalization of natural molecule santonin and caffeine-substituted 8-methylquinoline.

Rh(III)-Catalyzed and synergistic dual directing group-enabled redox-neutral [3+3] annulation of N-phenoxyacetamides with α-allenols

By virtue of α-allenols as innovative three-carbon annulation components, the Rh(III)-catalyzed redox-neutral C-H coupling of N-phenoxyacetamides with α-allenols has been realized for the assembly of 4-alkylidene chroman-2-ol frameworks via an unusual [3+3] annulation. This transformation features good functional group tolerance, specific regio-/chemoselectivity and potential synthetic utility. Mechanistic studies reveal that synergistic coordination modes between the dual directing groups (-ONHAc and -OH) and the rhodium metal center account for the observed exclusive selectivity.

Rhodium-Catalyzed Oxidative Annulation of 2- or 7-Arylindoles with Alkenes/Alkynes Using Molecular Oxygen as the Sole Oxidant Enabled by Quaternary Ammonium Salt

Developing an efficient catalytic system using molecular oxygen as the oxidant for rhodium-catalyzed cross-dehydrogenative coupling remains highly desirable. Herein, rhodium-catalyzed oxidative annulation of 2- or 7-phenyl-1H-indoles with alkenes or alkynes to assemble valuable 6H-isoindolo[2,1-a]indoles, pyrrolo[3,2,1-de]phenanthridines, or indolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines using the atmospheric pressure of air as the sole oxidant enabled by quaternary ammonium salt has been accomplished. Mechanistic studies provided evidence for the fast intramolecular aza-Michael reaction and aerobic reoxidation of Rh(I)/Rh(III), facilitated by the addition of quaternary ammonium salt.

Rh(III)-Catalyzed Regioselective Annulations of 3-Arylisoxazolones and 3-Aryl-1,4,2-dioxazol-5-ones with Propargyl Alcohols: Access to 4-Arylisoquinolines and 4-Arylisoquinolones

The Rh(III)-catalyzed dual directing group assisted C-H activation/annulation of 3-arylisoxazolones with propargyl alcohols has been developed, which expands the application scope of isoxazolones in organic synthesis. This protocol also worked well with 3-aryl-1,4,2-dioxazol-5-ones to produce synthetically and biologically important 4-arylisoquinolones.

Mechanistic Insights into the Dual Directing Group-Mediated C-H Functionalization/Annulation via a Hydroxyl Group-Assisted MIII-MV-MIII Pathway

The experimental investigations on the catalyst [Cp*Rh(OAc)₂ and Cp*Ir (OAc)₂)]-controlled [3 + 2] and [4 + 2] annulations of oximes with propargyl alcohols have been finished in our previous work and a supposed dual directing group-mediated reaction pathway has been deduced for the chemodivergent product synthesis. However, the detailed interaction modes of the dual directing groups binding with the corresponding metal center to achieve the above observed chemoselectivity remain unclear and even contradict. For instance, the calculational traditional dual direct coupling transition states suggested that both Cp*Rh(OAc)₂- and Cp*Ir(OAc)₂-catalyzed reactions would generate five-membered indenamines as the dominant products via [3 + 2] annulation. To address this concern, herein, systematic DFT calculations combined with proof-of-concept experiments have been carried out. Accordingly, a novel and more favorable M^III-M^V-M^III reaction mechanism, which involves an unprecedented HOAc together with a hydroxyl group-assisted reaction pathway in which the hydroxyl group acts as double effectors for the formation of M-O coordination and [MeO···H···O(CCH₃)O···H···O] bonding interactions, was deduced. Taken together, the present results would provide a rational basis for future development of the dual directing group-mediated C-H activation reactions.

RuV -Acylimido Intermediate in [RuIV (Por)Cl2 ]-Catalyzed C-N Bond Formation: Spectroscopic Characterization, Reactivity, and Catalytic Reactions

Metal-catalyzed C-N bond formation reactions via acylnitrene transfer have recently attracted much attention, but direct detection of the proposed acylnitrenoid/acylimido M(NCOR) (R=aryl or alkyl) species in these reactions poses a formidable challenge. Herein, we report on Ru(NCOR) intermediates in C-N bond formation catalyzed by [Ru^IV (Por)Cl₂ ]/N₃ COR, a catalytic method applicable to aziridine/oxazoline formation from alkenes, amination of substituted indoles, α-amino ketone formation from silyl enol ethers, amination of C(sp³ )-H bonds, and functionalization of natural products and carbohydrate derivatives (up to 99 % yield). Experimental studies, including HR-ESI-MS and EPR measurements, coupled with DFT calculations, lend evidence for the formulation of the Ru(NCOR) acylnitrenoids as a Ru^V -imido species.

Rh(III)-Catalyzed Csp2-Csp3 σ-Bond Enolation of α-Indolyl Alcohols

A Rh(III)-catalyzed Csp²-Csp³ σ-bond carbenoid functionalization of α-(2-indolyl)alcohols with acceptor/acceptor diazo compounds has been developed. This transformation provides an efficient strategy to assemble stable C2-enolated indole skeletons via Csp²-Csp³ σ-bond cleavage.

Traceless Directing Groups in Sustainable Metal-Catalyzed C–H Activation

Sustainable transformations towards the production of valuable chemicals constantly attract interest, both in terms of academic and applied research. C–H activation has long been scrutinized in this regard, given that it offers a straightforward pathway to prepare compounds of great significance. In this context, directing groups (DG) have paved the way for chemical transformations that had not been achievable using traditional reactions. Few steps, high yields, selectivity and activation of inert substrates are some of the invaluable assets of directed catalysis. Additionally, the employment of traceless directing groups (TDG) greatly improves and simplifies this strategy, enabling the realization of multi-step reactions in one-pot, cascade procedures. Cheap, abundant, readily available transition metal salts and complexes can catalyze a plethora of reactions employing TDGs, usually under low catalyst loadings—rarely under stoichiometric amounts, leading in greater atom economy and milder conditions with increased yields and step-economy. This review article summarizes all the work done on TDG-assisted catalysis with manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, or copper catalysts, and discusses the structure-activity relationships observed, by presenting the catalytic pathways and range of transformations reported thus far.

Well-Defined, Versatile and Recyclable Half-Sandwich Nickelacarborane Catalyst for Selective Carbene-Transfer Reactions

Catalytic carbene-transfer reactions constitute a class of highly useful transformations in organic synthesis. Although catalysts based on a range of transition-metals have been reported, the readily accessible nickel(II)-based complexes have been rarely used. Herein, an air-stable nickel(II)-carborane complex is reported as a well-defined, versatile and recyclable catalyst for selective carbene transfer reactions with low catalyst loading under mild conditions. This catalyst is effective for several types of reactions including diastereoselective cyclopropanation, epoxidation, selective X-H insertions (X = C, N, O, S, Si), particularly for the unprotected substrates. This represents a rare example of carborane ligands in base metal catalysis.

Rh(III)-Catalyzed Redox-Neutral C-H Activation/[3 + 2] Annulation of N-Phenoxy Amides with Propargylic Monofluoroalkynes

An efficient and redox-neutral Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation/[3 + 2] annulation of N-phenoxy amides with propargylic monofluoroalkynes has been realized to afford 3-alkylidene dihydrobenzofurans with an interesting α-quaternary carbon center. Combined experimental and computational mechanistic studies revealed that a Rh(III)-Rh(V)-Rh(III) catalytic pathway/uncatalyzed intramolecular [H···F] bonding-assisted S_N2'-type substitution cascade might be involved in the catalytic cycle, thereby enabling an excellent site-/regioselectivity with broad substrate/functional group compatibility, including the complete retention of the highly strained cyclobutyl structure in the 3-position.

Rhodium-Catalyzed Twofold Unsymmetrical C-H Alkenylation-Annulation/Thiolation Reaction To Access Thiobenzofurans

A Rh(III)-catalyzed twofold unsymmetrical C-H alkenylation-annulation/thiolation reaction has been developed, enabling the straightforward and efficient synthesis of various thiobenzofurans in one step. This robust protocol proceeds with a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance under relatively mild reaction conditions.

Rh(iii)-Catalyzed tandem C(sp2)–H allylation/N-alkylation annulation of arene amides with 2-alkylidenetrimethylene carbonates

A Rh(iii)-catalyzed tandem C(sp2)–H allylation/N-alkylation annulation reaction of arene amides employing 5-methylene-1,3-dioxan-2-one as an efficient allyl source has been disclosed for the first time.

Recent advances in Rh(iii)/Ir(iii)-catalyzed C–H functionalization/annulation via carbene migratory insertion

The review highlighted diverse annulations, including nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur heterocycles and carbocylizations via Rh(iii)/Ir(iii)-catalyzed C–H functionalization/annulation with various arene and carbene precursors.

Rh(iii)-Catalyzed sulfonylamination of α-indolyl alcohols via Csp2–Csp3 bond cleavage

A Rh(iii)-catalyzed beta-carbon amination of α-aryl alcohols with sulfonyl azides has been developed. This transformation features unstrained Csp²–Csp³ σ bond amination via C–C bond cleavage, and provides a direct approach to complex 2-aminoindoles.
