Shape Effect Undermined by Surface Reconstruction: Ethanol Dehydrogenation over Shape-Controlled SrTiO3 Nanocrystals

Hydrogen-mediated polarity compensation on the (110) surface terminations of ABO3 perovskites

Polar surfaces undergo polarity compensation, which can lead to significantly different surface chemistry from their nonpolar counterparts. This process in turn can substantially alter the binding of adsorbates on the surface. Here, we find that hydrogen binds much more strongly to the polar (110) surface than the nonpolar (100) surface for a wide range of ABO3 perovskites, forming a hydroxyl layer on the O24- termination and a hydride layer on the ABO4+ termination of the (110) surface. The stronger adsorption on the polar surfaces can be explained by polarity compensation: hydrogen atoms can act as electron donors or acceptors to compensate for the polarity of perovskite surfaces. The relative stability of the surface terminations is further compared under different gas environments and several perovskites have been found to form stable surface hydride layers under oxygen-poor conditions. These results demonstrate the feasibility of creating stable surface hydrides on perovskites by polarity compensation which might lead to new hydrogenation catalysts based on ABO3 perovskites.

Synergistic Effect of Sr-O Divacancy and Exposing Facets in SrTiO3 Micro/Nano Particle: Accelerating Exciton Formation and Splitting, Highly Efficient Co2+ Photooxidation

As a typical perovskite-type crystal, polyhedral strontium titanate (SrTiO₃ ) has shown anisotropic charge transport behavior in recent studies, however, the carrier transportation and transition of which has not been explained very clearly. This work present the existence of Sr and O divacancies in the novel rhombicuboctahedron SrTiO₃ micro/nano particles (Sr_{1- x} TiO_{3- x} /TiO_{2- x} ) with exposing (100), (110) and (111) facets and the diameter of 300-700 nm synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis, and also summarizes the dissociation mechanism of self-trapped excitons (STEs) caused by the divacancy and facet effect. In addition, most importantly, the metastable STEs with ultra-low binding energy (E_b  < 3 meV) under illumination are discovered. Combining the model of S-scheme heterojunction, a conversion mechanism of photoinduced carriers is proposed. The photocatalytic reaction of Co²⁺ is used as the probe reaction, and the unique Sr_{1- x} TiO_{3- x} /TiO_{2- x} possesses a high photooxidation efficiency of Co²⁺ , by which 70.3% of Co²⁺ is oxidized to Co³⁺ (CoOOH) in 5 min. This finding may provide a guideline for an optimal design of the photocatalytic materials for the recovery and extraction of metal ions based on SrTiO₃ .

strong synergistic effect of the (110) and (100) facets of the SrTiO3 perovskite micro/nanocrystal: decreasing the binding energy of exciton and superb photooxidation capability for Co2

Crystal facet regulation is an effective method for preparing SrTiO₃ or other perovskite semiconductor materials with high photochemical catalysis performance. In general, the edge-truncated cube of SrTiO₃ micro-nano particles has been widely reported because of the multiple crystal facets exposed at the same time. However, the effect of the (110) facet and the interaction between the (100) and (110) facets on the properties of photo-induced carriers is still not very clear. In this article, we have designed and prepared two edge-truncated cube SrTiO₃-a small and large area proportion of the (110) facet, respectively. In addition to the morphological and structural characterization, high-resolution XPS and femtosecond multiphoton transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy were used to detect the atomic vacancy and were applied to confirm the state of carrier transition. The results showed that the larger (110) facet led to two influences-more Sr vacancies and more self-trapping excitons (STEs) with an ultra-low binding energy (E_b = 2.13 meV), about 1.17 meV lower than that of the sample with the smaller (110) facet. In particular, the larger (110) facet also caused a much higher photooxidation performance for Co²⁺ to Co³⁺. This study not only enriches the arsenal of SrTiO₃ materials but also sheds new insights into the understanding of the synergistic effect essence of the (100) and (110) facets, which could promote the development of new perovskite photocatalytic materials, particularly in the recovery of heavy metals.

Water Splitting on Multifaceted SrTiO3 Nanocrystals: Calculations of Raman Vibrational Spectrum

Various photocatalysts are being currently studied with the aim of increasing the photocatalytic efficiency of water splitting for production of hydrogen as a fuel and oxygen as a medical gas. A noticeable increase of hydrogen production was found recently experimentally on the anisotropic faces (facets) of strontium titanate (SrTiO₃, STO) nanoparticles. In order to identify optimal sites for water splitting, the first principles calculations of the Raman vibrational spectrum of the bulk and stepped (facet) surface of a thin STO film with adsorbed water derivatives were performed. According to our calculations, the Raman spectrum of a stepped STO surface differs from the bulk spectrum, which agrees with the experimental data. The characteristic vibrational frequencies for the chemisorption of water derivatives on the surface were identified. Moreover, it is also possible to distinguish between differently adsorbed hydrogen atoms of a split water molecule. Our approach helps to select the most efficient (size and shape) perovskite nanoparticles for efficient hydrogen/oxygen photocatalytic production.

Efficient Electron Transfer by Plasmonic Silver in SrTiO3 for Low-Concentration Photocatalytic NO Oxidation

Photocatalysis presents a feasible option to control low-concentration NO emissions from industrial burning facilities, and increasing excitons in quantity and improving surface activity are the crucial issues to be solved. Plasmonic silver with the orientation of the (111) plane is uniformly distributed on the Ti-O termination of the SrTiO₃ (STO) (100) plane (major). The NO conversion rate has a sixfold increment compared to pristine STO. Meanwhile, the toxic NO₂ had a significant decline in the absence of water. This high performance could be attributed to the unique property of the localized surface plasmonic resonance of silver particles, which increases the optical response range of the catalyst. Meanwhile, the formation of a Schottky junction could promote the charge separation and enhance the lifetime of excitons via the electron transfer from silver particles to STO. More importantly, the Ag-O bond of the heterojunction increases the charge density of adjacent Ti, preferring to bond with the antibonding orbital electron of adsorbed molecules, which offers a favorable channel for the NO adsorption and activation of reactive oxidation species.

Scalable Synthesis of Pt/SrTiO3 Hydrogenolysis Catalysts in Pursuit of Manufacturing-Relevant Waste Plastic Solutions

An improved hydrothermal synthesis of shape-controlled, size-controlled 60 nm SrTiO₃ nanocuboid (STO NC) supports, which facilitates the scalable creation of platinum nanoparticle catalysts supported on STO (Pt/STO) for the chemical conversion of waste polyolefins, is reported herein. This synthetic method (1) establishes that STO nucleation prior to the hydrothermal treatment favors nanocuboid formation, (2) produces STO NC supports with average sizes ranging from 25 to 80 nm with narrow size distributions, and (3) demonstrates how SrCO₃ formation and variation in solution pH prevent the formation of STO NCs. The STO synthesis was scaled-up and conducted in a 4 L batch reactor, resulting in STO NCs of comparable size and morphology (m = 22.5 g, d_avg = 58.6 ± 16.2 nm) to those synthesized under standard hydrothermal conditions in a lab-scale 125 mL autoclave reactor. Size-controlled STO NCs, ranging in roughly 10 nm increments from 25 to 80 nm, were used to support Pt deposited through strong electrostatic adsorption (SEA), a practical and scalable solution-based method. Using SEA techniques and an STO support with an average size of 39.3 ± 6.3 nm, a Pt/STO catalyst with 3.6 wt % Pt was produced and used for high-density polyethylene hydrogenolysis under previously reported conditions (170 psi H₂, 300 °C, 96 h; final product: M_w = 2400, Đ = 1.03). As a well-established model system for studying the behavior of heterogeneous catalysts and their supports, the Pt/STO system detailed in this work presents a unique opportunity to simultaneously convert waste plastic into commercially viable products while gaining insight into how scalable inorganic synthesis can support transformative manufacturing.

Selectively triggering photoelectromacro for CO2to CH4reduction over SrTiO3{110} facet with dual-metal sites

In this article, the roles of surface-active sites in dominating photoelectron selectivity for CO₂reduction products are well demonstrated over photocatalyst models of SrTiO₃{100} and {110} facets. On the easily exposed {100} facets terminated with Sr-O atoms, photoelectrons are of 8 mol % for CH₄and 92 mol % for CO generation. The Sr-O-Ti configuration in the {110} facets could enrich the surface charge density due to the lower interface resistance for higher photocatalytic efficiency (1.6 fold). The dual sites of Ti and adjacent Sr atoms are active for strong adsorption and activation of the generated CO* species from primary CO₂reduction on the surface, thus kinetically favoring the activity of photoelectrons (73 mol %) in hydrogenation for CH₂* species and hence CH₄product. Inversely, the poor CH₄selectivity is due to difficulty in the subsequent photoelectron reduction reaction by the weak adsorption of CO* at the single-Sr site on the {100} facets, independent of the electron and proton concentration. Our results may offer some illuminating insights into the design of a highly efficient photocatalyst for selective CO₂reduction.

The Effect of Water on the 2-Propanol Oxidation Activity of Co-Substituted LaFe1- Cox O3 Perovskites

Perovskites are interesting oxidation catalysts due to their chemical flexibility enabling the tuning of several properties. In this work, we synthesized LaFe_1−xCo_xO₃ catalysts by co‐precipitation and thermal decomposition, characterized them thoroughly and studied their 2‐propanol oxidation activity under dry and wet conditions to bridge the knowledge gap between gas and liquid phase reactions. Transient tests showed a highly active, unstable low‐temperature (LT) reaction channel in conversion profiles and a stable, less‐active high‐temperature (HT) channel. Cobalt incorporation had a positive effect on the activity. The effect of water was negative on the LT channel, whereas the HT channel activity was boosted for x>0.15. The boost may originate from a slower deactivation rate of the Co³⁺ sites under wet conditions and a higher amount of hydroxide species on the surface comparing wet to dry feeds. Water addition resulted in a slower deactivation for Co‐rich catalysts and higher activity in the HT channel state.

Water Splitting on Multifaceted SrTiO3 Nanocrystals: Computational Study

Recent experimental findings suggest that strontium titanate SrTiO3 (STO) photocatalytic activity for water splitting could be improved by creating multifaceted nanoparticles. To understand the underlying mechanisms and energetics, the model for faceted nanoparticles was created. The multifaceted nanoparticles’ surface is considered by us as a combination of flat and “stepped” facets. Ab initio calculations of the adsorption of water and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) intermediates were performed. Our findings suggest that the “slope” part of the step showed a natural similarity to the flat surface, whereas the “ridge” part exhibited significantly different adsorption configurations. On the “slope” region, both molecular and dissociative adsorption modes were possible, whereas on the “ridge”, only dissociative adsorption was observed. Water adsorption energies on the “ridge” ( −1.50 eV) were significantly higher than on the “slope” ( −0.76 eV molecular; −0.83 eV dissociative) or flat surface ( −0.79 eV molecular; −1.09 eV dissociative).

Interfacial acidity on the strontium titanate surface: a scaling paradigm and the role of the hydrogen bond

A fundamental understanding of acidity at an interface, as mediated by structure and molecule-surface interactions, is essential to elucidate the mechanisms of a range of chemical transformations. While the strength of an acid in homogeneous gas and solution phases is conceptually well understood, acid-base chemistry at heterogeneous interfaces is notoriously more complicated. Using density functional theory and nonlinear vibrational spectroscopy, we present a method to determine the interfacial Brønsted-Lowry acidity of aliphatic alcohols adsorbed on the (100) surface of the model perovskite, strontium titanate. While shorter and less branched alkanols are known to be less acidic in the gas phase and more acidic in solution, here we show that shorter alcohols are less acidic whereas less substituted alkanols are more acidic at the gas-oxide interface. Hydrogen bonding plays a critical role in defining acidity, whereas structure-acidity relationships are dominated by van der Waals interactions between the alcohol and the surface.

Defect engineering of oxide perovskites for catalysis and energy storage: synthesis of chemistry and materials science

Oxide perovskites have emerged as an important class of materials with important applications in many technological areas, particularly thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and energy storage. However, their implementation faces numerous challenges that are familiar to the chemist and materials scientist. The present work surveys the state-of-the-art by integrating these two viewpoints, focusing on the critical role that defect engineering plays in the design, fabrication, modification, and application of these materials. An extensive review of experimental and simulation studies of the synthesis and performance of oxide perovskites and devices containing these materials is coupled with exposition of the fundamental and applied aspects of defect equilibria. The aim of this approach is to elucidate how these issues can be integrated in order to shed light on the interpretation of the data and what trajectories are suggested by them. This critical examination has revealed a number of areas in which the review can provide a greater understanding. These include considerations of (1) the nature and formation of solid solutions, (2) site filling and stoichiometry, (3) the rationale for the design of defective oxide perovskites, and (4) the complex mechanisms of charge compensation and charge transfer. The review concludes with some proposed strategies to address the challenges in the future development of oxide perovskites and their applications.

Comparative Hybrid Hartree-Fock-DFT Calculations of WO2-Terminated Cubic WO3 as Well as SrTiO3, BaTiO3, PbTiO3 and CaTiO3 (001) Surfaces

We performed, to the best of our knowledge, the world’s first first-principles calculations for the WO2-terminated cubic WO3 (001) surface and analyzed the systematic trends in the WO3, SrTiO3, BaTiO3, PbTiO3 and CaTiO3 (001) surface ab initio calculations. According to our first principles calculations, all WO2 or TiO2-terminated WO3, SrTiO3, BaTiO3, PbTiO3 and CaZrO3 (001) surface upper-layer atoms relax inwards towards the crystal bulk, while all second-layer atoms relax upwards. The only two exceptions are outward relaxations of first layer WO2 and TiO2-terminated WO3 and PbTiO3 (001) surface O atoms. The WO2 or TiO2-terminated WO3, SrTiO3, BaTiO3, PbTiO3 and CaTiO3 (001) surface-band gaps at the Γ–Γ point are smaller than their respective bulk-band gaps. The Ti–O chemical bond populations in the SrTiO3, BaTiO3, PbTiO3 and CaTiO3 bulk are smaller than those near the TiO2-terminated (001) surfaces. Conversely, the W–O chemical bond population in the WO3 bulk is larger than near the WO2-terminated WO3 (001) surface.

Stabilization of Size-Controlled BaTiO3 Nanocubes via Precise Solvothermal Crystal Growth and Their Anomalous Surface Compositional Reconstruction

Crystal growth of barium titanate (BaTiO₃) using a wet chemical reaction was investigated at various temperatures. BaTiO₃ nanoparticles were obtained at an energy-efficient temperature of 80 °C. However, BaTiO₃ nanocubes with a preferred size and shape could be synthesized using a solvothermal method at 200 °C via a reaction involving titanium tetraisopropoxide [(CH₃)₂CHO]₄Ti for nucleation and fine titanium oxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles for crystal growth. The BaTiO₃ nanocubes showed a high degree of dispersion without the use of dispersants or surfactants. The morphology of BaTiO₃ was found to depend on the reaction medium. The size of the BaTiO₃ particles obtained using water as the reaction medium was the largest among the particles synthesized using various reaction media. In the case of alcohol reaction media, the BaTiO₃ particle size increased in the order methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 1-butanol, and 1-pentanol. Furthermore, BaTiO₃ powder obtained using alcohol reaction media resulted in cubic shapes as opposed to the round shapes obtained when water was used as the medium. We found that the optimal condition for the synthesis of BaTiO₃ nanocubes involved the use of 1-butanol as the reaction medium, resulting in an average particle size of 52 nm, which is the average distance of the cubes measured diagonally from corner to corner, and gives an average side length of 37 nm, and a tetragonal crystal system as evidenced by the powder X-ray diffraction pattern obtained using high-energy synchrotron X-rays. The origin of the spontaneous polarization of the BaTiO₃ tetragonal crystal structure was clarified by a pair distribution function analysis. In addition, surface reconstruction of BaTiO₃ nanocubes led to an outermost surface comprising two layers of Ti columns.

The catalytic dehydrogenation of ethanol by heterogeneous catalysts

In this review, recent advances in the catalytic dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehytde with the release of hydrogen catalyzed by a heterogeneous catalyst aresummerized and discussed.

Synthesis of SrTiO3 submicron cubes with simultaneous and competitive photocatalytic activity for H2O splitting and CO2 reduction

Single crystalline strontium titanate (SrTiO3) submicron cubes have been synthesized based on a molten salt method. The submicron cubes showed superior photocatalytic activity towards both water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction, in which methane (CH4) and hydrogen (H2) were simultaneously produced. The average production rate of methane up to 8 h is 4.39 μmol g-1 h-1 but drops to 0.46 μmol g-1 h-1. However, the average production rate of hydrogen is 14.52 before 8 h but then increases to 120.23 μmol g-1 h-1 after 8 h. The rate change of the two processes confirms the competition between the H2O splitting and CO2 reduction reactions. Band structure and surface characteristics of the SrTiO3 submicron cubes were characterized by diffuse reflective UV-Vis spectroscopy, Mott-Schottky analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results reveal that the simultaneous and competitive production of methane and hydrogen is due to a thermodynamics factor, as well as the competition between the adsorption of carbon dioxide and water molecules on the surface of the faceted SrTiO3. This work demonstrates that SrTiO3 photocatalysts are efficient in producing sustainable fuels via water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction reactions.

Capsule-Structured Copper-Zinc Catalyst for Highly Efficient Hydrogenation of Carbon Dioxide to Methanol

To develop a new and efficient CO₂ -to-methanol catalyst is of extreme significance but still remains a challenge. Herein, an innovative indirect two-step strategy is reported to synthesize a highly efficient capsule-structured copper-based CO₂ -to-methanol catalyst (CZA-r@CZM). It consists of a structurally reconstructed millimeter-sized Cu/ZnO/Al₂ O₃ core (CZA-r) with intensified Cu-ZnO interactions, which is made by a facile hydrothermal treatment in an alkaline aqueous solution, and a Cu/ZnO/MgO (CZM) shell prepared by an ethylene glycol-assisted physical coating method. The CZA-r core displays 2.7 times higher CO₂ hydrogenation activity with 2.0 times higher CO selectivity than the previously reported Cu/ZnO/Al₂ O₃ (CZA-p), whereas the CZM shell can efficiently catalyze hydrogenation of the as-formed CO from the CZA-r core to methanol as it passes through the shell. As a result, the developed capsule-structured CZA-r@CZM catalyst exhibits 2.4 times higher CO₂ conversion with 1.8 times higher turnover frequency and 2.3-fold higher methanol space-time yield than the CZA-p catalyst (729.8 vs. 312.6 g_MeOH  kg_cat ^-1  h^-1 ). In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTs) experiments reveal that the CO₂ hydrogenation reaction proceeds through a reverse water-gas shift reaction followed by a CO hydrogenation pathway via an *H₃ CO intermediate. This work not only produces an efficient CO₂ -to-methanol catalyst, but also opens a new avenue for designing superior catalysts for other consecutive transformations.

β-SnWO4 with Morphology-Controlled Synthesis and Facet-Depending Photocatalysis

Faceted β-SnWO₄ microcrystals are prepared with different morphologies including tetrahedra, truncated tetrahedra, truncated octahedra, and short-spiked and long-spiked spikecubes. All of these morphologies are prepared with comparable experimental conditions via microwave-assisted synthesis of high-boiling alcohols (the so-called polyol method). The decisive parameters for controlled formation of one or the other morphology of faceted β-SnWO₄ microcrystals are studied and discussed, including microwave-assisted heating, Sn(OH)₂ as the Sn²⁺ reservoir, the temperature of particle nucleation, the temperature of particle growth, and the concentration of the starting materials. Morphology and crystallinity are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, UV-vis, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Finally, the photocatalytic properties of all obtained faceted microcrystals-tetrahedra, truncated tetrahedra, truncated octahedra, cubes, and short-spiked and long-spiked spikecubes-are exemplarily compared with regard to the photocatalytic decomposition of rhodamine B and the influence of the respective surface crystal planes.

Interstitial N-doped SrSnO3 perovskite: structural design, modification and photocatalytic degradation of dyes

An easy-to-manipulate, two-step, solid-state synthetic method was adopted to incorporate N element into the SrSnO₃ perovskite for structural modification, which improved its photocatalytic performance.
