Embracing the Complexity of Catalytic Structures: A Viewpoint on the Synthesis of Nonstoichiometric Mixed Metal Oxides for Catalysis

Highly efficient and durable syngas production over one-step synthesized synergistic oxygen carriers in biomass chemical looping gasification

Biomass chemical looping gasification (BCLG) gives a promising platform for cost-effective and low-polluting syngas production. To overcome the cumbersome process and poor dispersion of two-step synthesized synergistic oxygen carriers (OCs), NiO-LaFeO3 synergistic OCs were synthesized in one-step by sol-gel method with the found best Ni introduction amount of 0.5. The high lattice oxygen mobility and powerful oxidation capacity derived from the Ni-Fe synergistic effect made it perform better in the BCLG reaction. Due to the extraordinary stability of crystalline phase and oxygen activity, its reactivity did not suffer from any degradation during the 50 long-time redox cycles over 2750 min under the optimal working conditions of the ex-situ configuration, mutual mode and steam/biomass mass ratio of 5.0. The gas yield, carbon conversion, syngas selectivity and H2/CO ratio were constantly maintained around 1846.45 mL/g, 86.74%, 79.96% and 2.0, respectively. This study provides a feasible technical route for highly efficient and durable syngas production.

Alloying at a Subnanoscale Maximizes the Synergistic Effect on the Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Bonding dissimilar elements to provide synergistic effects is an effective way to improve the performance of metal catalysts. However, as the properties become more dissimilar, achieving synergistic effects effectively becomes more difficult due to phase separation. Here we describe a comprehensive study on how subnanoscale alloying is always effective for inter-elemental synergy. Thirty-six combinations of both bimetallic subnanoparticles (SNPs) and nanoparticles (NPs) were studied systematically using atomic-resolution imaging and catalyst benchmarking based on the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Results revealed that SNPs always produce greater synergistic effects than NPs, the greatest synergistic effect was found for the combination of Pt and Zr. The atomic-scale miscibility and the associated modulation of electronic states at the subnanoscale were much different from those at the nanoscale, which was observed by annular-dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively.

Dynamic Surface Reconstruction Unifies the Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Performance of Nonstoichiometric Mixed Metal Oxides

Compositionally versatile, nonstoichiometric, mixed ionic-electronic conducting metal oxides of the form A _n+1B _n O_3n+1 (n = 1 → ∞; A = rare-earth-/alkaline-earth-metal cation; B = transition-metal (TM) cation) remain a highly attractive class of electrocatalysts for catalyzing the energy-intensive oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The current design strategies for describing their OER activities are largely derived assuming a static, unchanged view of their surfaces, despite reports of dynamic structural changes to 3d TM-based perovskites during OER. Herein, through variations in the A- and B-site compositions of A _n+1B _n O_3n+1 oxides (n = 1 (A₂BO₄) or n = ∞ (ABO₃); A = La, Sr, Ca; B = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni), we show that, in the absence of electrolyte impurities, surface restructuring is universally the source of high OER activity in these oxides and is dependent on the initial oxide composition. Oxide surface restructuring is induced by irreversible A-site cation dissolution, resulting in in situ formation of a TM oxyhydroxide shell on top of the parent oxide core that serves as the active surface for OER. The rate of surface restructuring is found to depend on (i) composition of A-site cations, with alkaline-earth-metal cations dominating lanthanide cation dissolution, (ii) oxide crystal phase, with n = 1 A₂BO₄ oxides exhibiting higher rates of A-site dissolution in comparison to n = ∞ ABO₃ perovskites, (iii) lattice strain in the oxide induced by mixed rare-earth- and alkaline-earth-metal cations in the A-site, and (iv) oxide reducibility. Among the in situ generated 3d TM oxyhydroxide structures from A _n+1B _n O_3n+1 oxides, Co-based structures are characterized by superior OER activity and stability, even in comparison to as-synthesized Co-oxyhydroxide, pointing to the generation of high active surface area structures through oxide restructuring. These insights are critical toward the development of revised design criteria to include surface dynamics for effectively describing the OER activity of nonstoichiometric mixed-metal oxides.

Quasi-degenerate states and their dynamics in oxygen deficient reducible metal oxides

The physical and chemical properties of oxides are defined by the presence of oxygen vacancies. Experimentally, non-defective structures are almost impossible to achieve due to synthetic constraints. Therefore, it is crucial to account for vacancies when evaluating the characteristics of these materials. The electronic structure of oxygen-depleted oxides deeply differs from that of the native forms, in particular, of reducible metal oxides, where excess electrons can localize in various distinct positions. In this perspective, we present recent developments from our group describing the complexity of these defective materials that highlight the need for an accurate description of (i) intrinsic vacancies in polar terminations, (ii) multiple geometries and complex electronic structures with several states attainable at typical working conditions, and (iii) the associated dynamics for both vacancy diffusion and the coexistence of more than one electronic structure. All these aspects widen our current understanding of defects in oxides and need to be adequately introduced in emerging high-throughput screening methodologies.
