Dilute Pd/Au Alloys Replace Au/TiO2 Interface for Selective Oxidation Reactions

Dilute Alloys Based on Au, Ag, or Cu for Efficient Catalysis: From Synthesis to Active Sites

The development of new catalyst materials for energy-efficient chemical synthesis is critical as over 80% of industrial processes rely on catalysts, with many of the most energy-intensive processes specifically using heterogeneous catalysis. Catalytic performance is a complex interplay of phenomena involving temperature, pressure, gas composition, surface composition, and structure over multiple length and time scales. In response to this complexity, the integrated approach to heterogeneous dilute alloy catalysis reviewed here brings together materials synthesis, mechanistic surface chemistry, reaction kinetics, in situ and operando characterization, and theoretical calculations in a coordinated effort to develop design principles to predict and improve catalytic selectivity. Dilute alloy catalysts─in which isolated atoms or small ensembles of the minority metal on the host metal lead to enhanced reactivity while retaining selectivity─are particularly promising as selective catalysts. Several dilute alloy materials using Au, Ag, and Cu as the majority host element, including more recently introduced support-free nanoporous metals and oxide-supported nanoparticle "raspberry colloid templated (RCT)" materials, are reviewed for selective oxidation and hydrogenation reactions. Progress in understanding how such dilute alloy catalysts can be used to enhance selectivity of key synthetic reactions is reviewed, including quantitative scaling from model studies to catalytic conditions. The dynamic evolution of catalyst structure and composition studied in surface science and catalytic conditions and their relationship to catalytic function are also discussed, followed by advanced characterization and theoretical modeling that have been developed to determine the distribution of minority metal atoms at or near the surface. The integrated approach demonstrates the success of bridging the divide between fundamental knowledge and design of catalytic processes in complex catalytic systems, which can accelerate the development of new and efficient catalytic processes.

Recent progress in single-atom alloys: Synthesis, properties, and applications in environmental catalysis

Heterogeneous catalysts have made outstanding advancements in pollutants elimination as well as energy and materials production over the past decades. Single-atom alloys (SAAs) are novel environmental catalysts prepared by dispersing single metal atoms on other metals. Integrating the advantages of single atom and alloys, SAAs can maximize atom utilization, reduce the use of noble metals and enhance catalytic performances. The synergistic, electronic and geometric effects of SAAs are effective to modulate the activation energy and adsorption strength, consequently breaking linear scaling relationship as well as offering an excellent catalytic activity and selectivity. Moreover, SAAs possess clear atomic structure, active sites and reaction mechanisms, providing an opportunity to tailor catalytic properties and develop effective environmental catalysts. In this review, we provide the recent progress on synthetic strategies, catalytic properties and catalyst design of SAAs. Furthermore, the applications of SAAs in environmental catalysis are introduced towards catalytic conversion and elimination of different air pollutants in many important reactions including (electrochemical) oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), dehydrogenation of VOCs, CO₂ conversion, NO_x reduction, CO oxidation, SO₃ decomposition, etc. Finally, challenges and opportunities of SAAs in a broad environmental field are proposed.

Ni Single Atoms on Carbon Nitride for Visible-Light-Promoted Full Heterogeneous Dual Catalysis

Visible-light-driven organic transformations are of great interest in synthesizing valuable fine chemicals under mild conditions. The merger of heterogeneous photocatalysts and transition metal catalysts has recently drawn much attention due to its versatility for organic transformations. However, these semi-heterogenous systems suffered several drawbacks, such as transition metal agglomeration on the heterogeneous surface, hindering further applications. Here, we introduce heterogeneous single Ni atoms supported on carbon nitride (NiSAC/CN) for visible-light-driven C–N functionalization with a broad substrate scope. Compared to a semi-heterogeneous system, high activity and stability were observed due to metal–support interactions. Furthermore, through systematic experimental mechanistic studies, we demonstrate that the stabilized single Ni atoms on CN effectively change their redox states, leading to a complete photoredox cycle for C–N coupling.

In this work, the first demonstration of heterogeneous photoredox C–N coupling is reported using Ni atoms on C₃N₄. Due to metal–support interactions, high activity and stability were observed during visible-light-driven C–N functionalization.

Nano-Sized NiO Immobilized on Au/CNT for Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation: Influences of Hybrid Structure and Interface

Tiny gold nanoparticles were successfully anchored on carbon nanotubes (CNT) with NiO decoration by a two-step synthesis. Characterizations suggested that Ni species in an oxidative state preferred to be highly dispersed on CNT. During the synthesis, in situ reduction by NaBH₄ and thermal treatment in oxidation atmosphere were consequently carried out, causing the formation of Au-Ni-O_x interfaces and bimetal hybrid structure depending on the Ni/Au atomic ratios. With an appropriate Ni/Au atomic ratio of 8:1, Ni atoms migrated into the sub-layers of Au particles and induced the lattice contraction of Au particles, whilst a higher Ni/Au atomic ratio led to the accumulation of NiO fractions surrounding Au particles. Both contributed to the well-defined Au-Ni-O_x interface and accelerated reaction rates. Nickel species acted as structure promoters with essential Au-Ni-O_x hybrid structure as well as the active oxygen supplier, accounting for the enhanced activity for benzyl alcohol oxidation. However, the over-layer of unsaturated gold sites easily occured under a high Ni/Au ratio, resulting in a lower reaction rate. With an Au/Ni atomic ratio of 8:1, the specific rate of AuNi₈/CNT reached 185 μmol/g/s at only 50 °C in O₂ at ordinary pressure.

In-situ oxidation of Palladium-Iridium nanoalloy anchored on Nitrogen-doped graphene as an efficient catalyst for methanol electrooxidation

Palladium (Pd)-based materials have been widely used as catalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Unfortunately, the catalytic activity was limited by structure, carbon monoxide intermediates (CO_ads) tolerance and stability. It was currently difficult to be used in large-scale commercial production. Herein, to further improve their electrocatalytic activity, a facile oxidation method to achieve in-situ oxidation of palladium-iridium (PdIr) alloy on nitrogen-doped graphene (NGS) is used, which is named as Pd-Ir-O/NGS. The new catalyst exhibits remarkable MOR activity (1374.8 mA mg^-1), CO_ads tolerance (the onset oxidation potential reach 0.725 V) and stability (the current density retention rate after 500 cycles of cyclic voltammetry is 44.9%). As a catalyst for MOR, the Pd-Ir-O/NGS has more outstanding electrocatalytic performance compared with commercial Pd/C and other counterparts. The mechanism study shows that the excellent catalytic performance is attributed to (1) the synergistic electronic effect of Pd-Ir-O due to the introduction of Ir and O, (2) the insertion of O into PdIr alloy that kinetically accelerated the oxidation of poisoning methoxy intermediates and (3) the vital roles of unique three-dimensional (3D) structure of NGS with abundant nitrogen atoms. Our findings herald a new paradigm for the modification of palladium-based materials for MOR and provide an alternative design principle for novel 3D carbon-based material for various application.
