Review of the Real-Time Monitoring Technologies for Lithium Dendrites in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have the advantage of high energy density, which has attracted the wide attention of researchers. Nevertheless, the growth of lithium dendrites on the anode surface causes short life and poor safety, which limits their application. Therefore, it is necessary to deeply understand the growth mechanism of lithium dendrites. Here, the growth mechanism of lithium dendrites is briefly summarized, and the real-time monitoring technologies of lithium dendrite growth in recent years are reviewed. The real-time monitoring technologies summarized here include in situ X-ray, in situ Raman, in situ resonance, in situ microscopy, in situ neutrons, and sensors, and their representative studies are summarized. This paper is expected to provide some guidance for the research of lithium dendrites, so as to promote the development of LIBs.

Optical Approach for Mapping the Intercalation Capacity of Porous Electrodes

The intercalation capacity of a porous electrode in real batteries is not uniform spatially due to the inevitable structural and compositional inhomogeneity and site-dependent ion and electron transport features. Reliable methods to quantify the capacity distribution are highly desirable but absent so far in battery research. In this paper, a novel optical technique, oblique incident reflection difference (OIRD), was employed to monitor in situ the electrochemical ion (de)intercalation behavior of Prussian blue analogue (PBA) porous films. The OIRD signal responded synchronously to the ion (de)intercalation, and the change in the OIRD signal (ΔI) was positively correlated with the local electrochemical capacity, thereby enabling mapping of the spatially resolved ion storage capacity of the films. Optical analysis further showed that the OIRD response originated from the ion (de)intercalation-induced dielectric constant change of PBA films. This work therefore offers an intriguing in situ and spatially resolved tool for the study of rechargeable batteries.

Revolutionizing the structural design and determination of covalent-organic frameworks: principles, methods, and techniques

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) represent an important class of crystalline porous materials with designable structures and functions. The interconnected organic monomers, featuring pre-designed symmetries and connectivities, dictate the structures of COFs, endowing them with high thermal and chemical stability, large surface area, and tunable micropores. Furthermore, by utilizing pre-functionalization or post-synthetic functionalization strategies, COFs can acquire multifunctionalities, leading to their versatile applications in gas separation/storage, catalysis, and optoelectronic devices. Our review provides a comprehensive account of the latest advancements in the principles, methods, and techniques for structural design and determination of COFs. These cutting-edge approaches enable the rational design and precise elucidation of COF structures, addressing fundamental physicochemical challenges associated with host-guest interactions, topological transformations, network interpenetration, and defect-mediated catalysis.

Dielectric Filler-Induced Hybrid Interphase Enabling Robust Solid-State Li Metal Batteries at High Areal Capacity

The fillers in composite solid-state electrolyte are mainly responsible for the enhancement of the conduction of Li ions but barely regulate the formation of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Herein, a unique filler of dielectric NaNbO3 for the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based polymer electrolyte, which is subjected to the exchange of Li+ and Na+ during cycling, is reported and the substituted Na+ is engaged in the construction of a fluorinated Li/Na hybrid SEI with high Young's modulus, facilitating the fast transport of Li+ at the interface at a high areal capacity and suppressing the Li dendrite growth. The dielectric NaNbO3 also induces the generation of high-dielectric β phase of PVDF to promote the dissociation of Li salt. The Li/Li symmetrical cell exhibits a long-term dendrite-free cycling over 600 h at a high areal capacity of 3 mA h cm-2 . The LiNi0.8 Mn0.1 Co0.1 O2 /Li solid-state cells with NaNbO3 stably cycle 2200 times at 2 C and that paired with high-loading cathode (10 mg cm-2 ) can stably cycle for 150 times and exhibit excellent performances at -20 °C. This work provides a novel design principle of fillers undertaking interfacial engineering in composite solid-state electrolytes for developing the safe and stable solid-state lithium metal battery.

Fundamentals of the Cathode-Electrolyte Interface in All-solid-state Lithium Batteries

All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSBs) enabled by solid-state electrolytes (SEs) including oxide-based and sulfide-based electrolytes have gained worldwide attention because of their intrinsic safety and higher energy density over conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, despite the high ionic conductivity of advanced SEs, ASSBs still exhibit high overall internal resistance, the most significant contributor of which can be ascribed to the cathode-SE interfaces. This review seeks to clarify the critical issues regarding the cathode-SE interfaces, including fundamental principles and corresponding solutions. First, major issues concerning electro-chemo-mechanical instability between cathodes and SEs and their formation mechanisms are discussed. Then, specific problems in oxides and sulfides and various solutions and strategies toward interfacial modifications are highlighted. Efforts toward the characterization and analysis of cathode-SE interfaces with advanced techniques are also summarized. Finally, perspectives are offered on several problems demanding urgent solutions and the future development of SE applications and ASSBs.
