Cation-Directed Self-Assembly of Macrocyclic Diacetylene for Developing Chromogenic Polydiacetylene

Size-Tunable Semiconducting 2D Nanorectangles from Conjugated Polyenyne Homopolymer Synthesized via Cascade Metathesis and Metallotropy Polymerization

Size-tunable semiconducting two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets from conjugated homopolymers are promising materials for easy access to optoelectronic applications, but it has been challenging due to the low solubility of conjugated homopolymers. Herein, we report size-tunable and uniform semiconducting 2D nanorectangles via living crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) of a fully conjugated polyenyne homopolymer prepared by cascade metathesis and metallotropy (M&M) polymerization. The resulting polyenyne with enhanced solubility successfully underwent living CDSA via biaxial growth mechanism, thereby producing 2D nanorectangles with sizes precisely tuned from 0.1 to 3.0 μm² with narrow dispersity mostly less than 1.1 and low aspect ratios less than 3.1. Furthermore, living CDSA produced complex 2D block comicelles with different heights from various degrees of polymerization (DPs) of unimers. Based on diffraction analyses and DFT calculations, we proposed an interdigitating packing model with an orthorhombic crystal lattice of semiconducting 2D nanorectangles.

Stimuli-Responsive Sponge for Imaging and Measuring Weak Compression Stresses

Imaging and measuring compression stresses secure a safe and healthy life. Compression stresses in kPa range are not easily detected by conventional mechanoresponsive materials because microscopic molecular motion of the chromophores is not induced by such weak stresses. Moreover, imaging of the stress distribution is not achieved so far. The present study shows a sponge device combining two stimuli-responsive materials, a capsule releasing interior liquid and color-changing polymer in responses to compression stress and chemical stimulus, respectively. The stimuli-responsive capsule is dispersed on a melamine sponge comprised of the fibers with coating the layered polydiacetylene (PDA). The application of weak compression stresses induces collapse of the capsules, outflow of the interior liquid, and subsequent irreversible color change of PDA. The cascading response in the sponge device colorimetrically enables imaging of the distribution and measuring the strength of the compression stresses in kPa range. Furthermore, the device demonstrates imaging and measuring unknown weak compression stresses applied by the irregular-shaped objects. A couple of clinical issues in surgical operation of intestine are studied using the stress-imaging sponge device. The device and its design strategy can be applied to stress imaging in a variety of fields.

A Layered Polydiacetylene Containing Hydrogen-Bonding 4,4'-Bipyridyl Guests: Reversible Color Changes with a Wide-Range Temperature Response

Layered organic polymers have intercalation capabilities and dynamic properties. In classical intercalation chemistry, the interlayer guests are intercalated in the host layers via electrostatic interaction. The present work shows the organic layered materials with the host-guest interlayer interaction via hydrogen bond. Polydiacetylene (PDA) exhibits color changes from blue to red with the application of external stimuli, such as thermal and mechanical stresses. Here we report on a layered PDA containing 4,4'-bipyridyl in the interlayer space as a hydrogen-bonding guest. Whereas the layered PDA without interlayer guest shows the color transition at 65 °C, gradual color changes with two-stage reversibility are observed in the temperature range of -20-240 °C by the introduction of the hydrogen-bonding guest. The weaker interlayer interaction via the hydrogen bond promotes the dynamic motion directing the thermoresponsive color changes in a wide temperature range.

Polymers with advanced structural and supramolecular features synthesized through topochemical polymerization

Polymers are an integral part of our daily life. Hence, there are constant efforts towards synthesizing novel polymers with unique properties. As the composition and packing of polymer chains influence polymer's properties, sophisticated control over the molecular and supramolecular structure of the polymer helps tailor its properties as desired. However, such precise control via conventional solution-state synthesis is challenging. Topochemical polymerization (TP), a solvent- and catalyst-free reaction that occurs under the confinement of a crystal lattice, offers profound control over the molecular structure and supramolecular architecture of a polymer and usually results in ordered polymers. In particular, single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) TP is advantageous as we can correlate the structure and packing of polymer chains with their properties. By designing molecules appended with suitable reactive moieties and utilizing the principles of supramolecular chemistry to align them in a reactive orientation, the synthesis of higher-dimensional polymers and divergent topologies has been achieved via TP. Though there are a few reviews on TP in the literature, an exclusive review showcasing the topochemical synthesis of polymers with advanced structural features is not available. In this perspective, we present selected examples of the topochemical synthesis of organic polymers with sophisticated structures like ladders, tubular polymers, alternating copolymers, polymer blends, and other interesting topologies. We also detail some strategies adopted for obtaining distinct polymers from the same monomer. Finally, we highlight the main challenges and prospects for developing advanced polymers via TP and inspire future directions in this area.

Topochemical polymerizations for the solid-state synthesis of organic polymers

Topochemical polymerizations are solid-state reactions driven by the alignment of monomers in the crystalline state. The molecular confinement in the monomer crystal lattice offers precise control over the tacticity, packing and crystallinity of the polymer formed in the topochemical reaction. As topochemical reactions occur under solvent- and catalyst-free conditions, giving products in high yield and selectivity/specificity that do not require tedious chromatographic purification, topochemical polymerizations are highly attractive over traditional solution-phase polymer synthesis. By this method, polymers having sophisticated structures and desired topologies can be availed. Often, such ordered packing confers attractive properties to the topochemically-synthesized polymers. Diverse categories of topochemical polymerizations are known, such as polymerizations via [2+2], [4+4], [4+2], and [3+2] cycloadditions, and polymerization of diynes, triynes, dienes, trienes, and quinodimethanes, each of which proceed under suitable stimuli like heat, light or pressure. Each class of these reactions requires a unique packing arrangement of the corresponding monomers for the smooth reaction and produces polymers with distinct properties. This review is penned with the intent of bringing all the types of topochemical polymerizations into a single platform and communicating the versatility of these lattice-controlled polymerizations. We present a brief history of the development of each category and comprehensively review the topochemical synthesis of fully-organic polymers reported in the last twenty years, particularly in crystals. We mainly focus on the various molecular designs and crystal engineering strategies adopted to align monomers in a suitable orientation for polymerization. Finally, we analyze the current challenges and future perspectives in this research field.

Protonation-Triggered Supramolecular Gel from Macrocyclic Diacetylene: Gelation Behavior, Topochemical Polymerization, and Colorimetric Response

Supramolecular gels originating from the hierarchical self-assembly of low molecular weight organic molecules is a strongly emerging field of advanced material research for the fabrication of soft functional materials. Herein, a novel supramolecular gel was fabricated through the protonation-triggered unidirectional self-assembly of pyridine-attached macrocyclic diacetylene (PyMCDA). Basic nitrogen of a pyridine ring with a strong affinity toward proton transforms the neutral PyMCDA into gelator in its protonated pyridinium salt form (PyMCDA-H⁺), which further evolves to nano-fibrillar networks to yield a supramolecular gel. Under the irradiation of UV light, the white color gel turned to a robust covalently cross-linked blue-phase PDA gel. Interestingly, polymeric PyMCPDA-H⁺ gel exhibits a naked-eye detectable reversible blue-red colorimetric response for alternating acid/base (H₂SO₄/NH₄OH) and colorimetric sensitivity toward selected anions: CH₃COO^-, CN^-, HCOO^-, and CH₃CH₂COO^-. It is with the hope that this work point toward the utility and versatility of macrocyclic PDAs for constructing chromogenic supramolecular gels for their possible use in sensing systems.

Intercalation and flexibility chemistries of soft layered materials

Layered materials, alternate stackings of two or more components, are found in a wide range of scales. Chemists can design and synthesize layered structures containing functional units. The soft-type layered materials exhibit characteristic dynamic functions originating from two-dimensional (2D) anisotropy and structure flexibility. This feature article focuses on "intercalation" and "flexibility" as two new perspectives for designing soft layered materials. Intercalation of guests is a characteristic approach for design of layered structures. Flexibility is an important factor to control the dynamic functions of the layered structures. As a model case, the intercalation-induced tunable stimuli-responsive color-change properties of layered polydiacetylene (PDA) are introduced to study the impact of the intercalation and flexibility on the dynamic functions. Recently, layered materials have drastically expanded the research area from conventional rigid inorganic compounds to new self-assembled nanostructures consisting of organic components, such as polymers, metal-organic frameworks, and covalent-organic frameworks. These new layered architectures have potentials for exhibiting dynamic functions originating from the structure flexibility beyond the static properties originating from classical intercalation and host-guest chemistries. Therefore, intercalation and flexibility chemistries of soft layered materials are regarded as new perspectives for design of advanced dynamic functional materials.

Self-Assembly Behavior of Diacetylenic Acid Molecules upon Vapor Deposition: Odd-Even Effect on the Film Morphology

A series of linear carboxylic acids containing diacetylenic units at different positions along the chain (C₁₂ H₂₅ (C≡C)₂ (CH₂ )_n COOH, n=7-11) were vacuum-deposited on clean silica substrates. The morphologies of the initial films after UV irradiation were studied. A clear odd-even effect on the morphology of the initial film was observed in that, depending on the spacer length between the diacetylenic unit and carboxyl head group, rings or dendrites of acid dimer layers were obtained. A molecular dynamic simulation of the aggregation process suggests that two competing intermolecular interactions and thus aggregation directions are involved and modulated by the odd or even carbon chain length. Further modulation of the interaction by substitution of a phenyl group at the terminus of the chain or by changing the carboxyl head group to an amidobenzoic acid head group led to a similar odd-even effect but with different dimensions or trends, which can be rationalized similarly. These results give the opportunity to create aligned conjugated polymer chains of different dimensions through self-assembly for applications in molecular/organic electronics.

New insights into Hexakis macrocycles as a novel nano-carrier for highly potent anti-cancer treatment: A new challenge in drug delivery

The purpose of this study is to design and evaluate a new tubular assembly structure of Hexakis (m-phenylene ethynylene) (m-PE) macrocycles and to explore its potential application as an innovative drug delivery system. First, we focused on how (m-PE) macrocycles can be self-assembled in both chloroform (CHCl₃) and water solvents for the formation of the assembled nanotube using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In contrast to their behavior in water solvent, all ten (m-PE) macrocycles remain aggregated at low concentrations of CHCl₃. We found that these macrocycles carrying chiral side chains and capable of H-bonded self-association, assemble into tubular stacks. Then, the dual delivery strategy for the transport of doxorubicin (DOX) and curcumin (Cur) on the self-assembly system of hexakis (m-PE) nanocarrier is examined using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and free energy calculation. The obtained results indicated that the binding energy of DOX (- 298.9 kJ/mol) on hexakis (m-PE) in the presence of Cur is higher than free DOX (- 247.7 kJ/mol). Furthermore, in the interaction of the DOX and hexakis m-PE, the contribution of van der Walls (vdW) energy is higher than electrostatic (elec) energy, which can be related to the strong π-π interactions between the drug molecules with the carrier surface. In general, the results indicated that the simultaneous delivery of DOX and Cur through DOX/Cur/hexakis (m-PE) could be a promising vehicle in tumor therapy. Based on the obtained results of the present research, hexakis (m-PE) macrocycle can be used as a drug delivery vehicle for targeted or systemic delivery.

Solid-State Low-Temperature Thermoresponsive and Reversible Color Changes of Conjugated Polymer in Layered Structure: Beyond Infrared Thermography

Emergence of thermoresponsive and reversible color changes at low temperature is a challenging target. In general, it is not easy to induce sufficient dynamic motion of rigid molecules including chromophore at a lower temperature. The present work shows unusually low-temperature color-change properties originating from the dynamic motion of rigid conjugated polymer in solid state. The layered composites of polydiacetylene (PDA) and guest l-arginine (L-Arg) (PDA-(L-Arg)) exhibit temperature-responsive gradual color changes with reversibility in the range of 123-333 K in solid crystalline state. The dynamic properties are induced by gradual and reversible distortion of the π-conjugated main chain in response to temperature. The tuned flexibility of the layered structure facilitates motion of the rigid π-conjugated molecule at low temperature. The PDA-(L-Arg)-coated substrates are applied to visualization and quantification of 2D and 3D temperature distributions generated by cooling with liquid nitrogen. These thermographic devices afford to image lower temperature range than typical infrared thermography. The present work indicates potentials of layered architectures with tunable flexibility for emergence of dynamic properties.

Visualization and Quantification of Microwaves Using Thermoresponsive Color-Change Hydrogel

Visualization and quantification of invisible lights, such as microwaves, are significant for their safe use. In general, a sensitizer material combined with a transistor is used as electronic devices for the measurement. Here, we developed a thermoresponsive color-change hydrogel of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) cross-linked by a layered organic composite based on polydiacetylene (PDA) for visualization and colorimetric quantification of microwaves. The layered PDA in the PNIPAAm hydrogel showed the temperature-dependent gradual color change with heating. Irradiation of microwaves induced the color change of PDA through heating of water in the hydrogel and subsequent volume shrinkage. The color of the gel was applied to visualize the temperature distribution with increasing irradiation time of microwaves. Moreover, the power of the irradiated microwave was quantified by time to the complete color change of the gel. The results indicate that the stimulus conversion process has potentials for development of a variety of imaging and quantification devices based on the layered PDA.

Glass-transition-induced color-changing resins containing layered polydiacetylene

A phase-segregated composite of polystyrene (PSt) and layered polydiacetylene (PDA) was formed through simultaneous polymerization and crystallization. As the motion of PSt chains with glass transition is transferred to that of PDA, the color change was achieved by the shortening of the conjugation length with deformation of the layered structure.
