Collective Spin Manipulation in Antiferroelastic Spin-Crossover Metallo-Supramolecular Chains

Atomic-scale investigation on the electronic states in a one-dimensional π-d conjugated metal-organic framework

Enhanced electronic coupling gives rise to many intriguing properties in π-d conjugated metal-organic frameworks (CMOFs). By low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculation, we investigate the electronic coupling in one-dimensional (1D) π-d conjugated FeQDI polymers. Our experiments have resolved the bulk and end states stemming from Fe atoms in different coordination environments and their spatial extension due to π-d conjugation. By fitting the band structure by Wannier functions in an energy range of -0.5 eV to 0 eV, the Fe-Fe, QDI-QDI and Fe-QDI hopping integrals are determined to be 15 meV, 121 meV and 24 meV, respectively. Our work provides experimental and theoretical insights into the electronic coupling in 1D CMOFs.

On-Surface Isomerization of Indigo within 1D Coordination Polymers

Natural products are attractive components to tailor environmentally friendly advanced new materials. We present surface-confined metallosupramolecular engineering of coordination polymers using natural dyes as molecular building blocks: indigo and the related Tyrian purple. Both building blocks yield identical, well-defined coordination polymers composed of (1 dehydroindigo : 1 Fe) repeat units on two different silver single crystal surfaces. These polymers are characterized atomically by submolecular resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy, bond-resolving atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. On Ag(100) and on Ag(111), the trans configuration of dehydroindigo results in N,O-chelation in the polymer chains. On the more inert Ag(111) surface, the molecules additionally undergo thermally induced isomerization from the trans to the cis configuration and afford N,N- plus O,O-chelation. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the coordination polymers of the cis-isomers on Ag(111) and of the trans-isomers on Ag(100) are energetically favoured. Our results demonstrate post-synthetic linker isomerization in interfacial metal-organic nanosystems.

Linear Conjugated Coordination Polymers for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Conjugated coordination polymers (CCPs) have attracted extensive attention for various applications related to energy storage and conversion in the past few years, despite that there are many CCPs with unclear chemical states and structures. Here, linear CCPs (LCCPs), with metal-O₄ active sites grown on carbon paper (CP) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), are presented. The LCCPs with high crystallinity and simple structures exhibit the order of electrocatalytic activity of Co-O₄  > Ni-O₄  > Fe-O₄ in terms of the metal-O₄ centers. The Co-based LCCP shows higher OER performance (263 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 ) and better durability (90 h at 30 mA cm^-2 ) than commercial IrO₂ /CP. The structures and chemical states of LCCPs are carefully investigated, and density functional theory is used to reveal the mechanism of OER at the central metal site. This investigation into LCCPs provides new sights for a better understanding of CCPs and expands the applications of LCCPs with metal-O₄ sites.

Binuclear spin-crossover [Fe(bt)(NCS)2]2(bpm) complex: A study using first principles calculations

The spin-crossover [Fe(bt)(NCS)₂]₂(bpm) complex is studied using spin-polarized density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation, the Hubbard U and the weak van der Waals interactions in conjunction with the projector augmented wave method in its molecular and periodic arrangements. It is shown that the considered complex has three magnetic configurations [high spin state (HS)-HS, HS-low spin state (LS), and LS-LS] corresponding to those observed experimentally after two transition temperatures T_c ⁽¹⁾ of 163 K and T_c ⁽²⁾ of 197 K. For the HS-HS magnetic state, we found that the two Fe centers are antiferromagnetically coupled for both molecular and periodic structures in good agreement with the experimental observations. Our results show that the computed total energy difference between the magnetic state configurations of the considered Fe₂ complex is significantly smaller compared to those reported in the literature for other mono- or binuclear compounds.

Role of the Magnetic Anisotropy in Atomic-Spin Sensing of 1D Molecular Chains

One-dimensional metal-organic chains often possess a complex magnetic structure susceptible to modification by alteration of their chemical composition. The possibility to tune their magnetic properties provides an interesting playground to explore quasi-particle interactions in low-dimensional systems. Despite the great effort invested so far, a detailed understanding of the interactions governing the electronic and magnetic properties of the low-dimensional systems is still incomplete. One of the reasons is the limited ability to characterize their magnetic properties at the atomic scale. Here, we provide a comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of metal-organic one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers consisting of 2,5-diamino-1,4-benzoquinonediimine ligands coordinated with Co or Cr atoms synthesized under ultrahigh-vacuum conditions on a Au(111) surface. A combination of integral X-ray spectroscopy with local-probe inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy corroborated by multiplet analysis, density functional theory, and inelastic electron tunneling simulations enables us to obtain essential information about their magnetic structures, including the spin magnitude and orientation at the magnetic atoms, as well as the magnetic anisotropy.

Toward High-Temperature Light-Induced Spin-State Trapping in Spin-Crossover Materials: The Interplay of Collective and Molecular Effects

Spin-crossover (SCO) materials display many fascinating behaviors including collective phase transitions and spin-state switching controlled by external stimuli, e.g., light and electrical currents. As single-molecule switches, they have been fêted for numerous practical applications, but these remain largely unrealized-partly because of the difficulty of switching these materials at high temperatures. We introduce a semiempirical microscopic model of SCO materials combining crystal field theory with elastic intermolecular interactions. For realistic parameters, this model reproduces the key experimental results including thermally induced phase transitions, light-induced spin-state trapping (LIESST), and reverse-LIESST. Notably, we reproduce and explain the experimentally observed relationship between the critical temperature of the thermal transition, T_1/2, and the highest temperature for which the trapped state is stable, T_LIESST, and explain why increasing the stiffness of the coordination sphere increases T_LIESST. We propose strategies to design SCO materials with higher T_LIESST: optimizing the spin-orbit coupling via heavier atoms (particularly in the inner coordination sphere) and minimizing the enthalpy difference between the high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states. However, the most dramatic increases arise from increasing the cooperativity of the spin-state transition by increasing the rigidity of the crystal. Increased crystal rigidity can also stabilize the HS state to low temperatures on thermal cycling yet leave the LS state stable at high temperatures following, for example, reverse-LIESST. We show that such highly cooperative systems offer a realistic route to robust room-temperature switching, demonstrate this in silico, and discuss material design rationale to realize this.

Homochiral Mn3+ Spin-Crossover Complexes: A Structural and Spectroscopic Study

Structural, magnetic, and spectroscopic data on a Mn³⁺ spin-crossover complex with Schiff base ligand 4-OMe-Sal₂323, isolated in crystal lattices with five different counteranions, are reported. Complexes of [Mn(4-OMe-Sal₂323)]X where X = ClO₄^– (1), BF₄^– (2), NO₃^– (3), Br^– (4), and I^– (5) crystallize isotypically in the chiral orthorhombic space group P2₁2₁2 with a range of spin state preferences for the [Mn(4-OMe-Sal₂323)]⁺ complex cation over the temperature range 5–300 K. Complexes 1 and 2 are high-spin, complex 4 undergoes a gradual and complete thermal spin crossover, while complexes 3 and 5 show stepped crossovers with different ratios of spin triplet and quintet forms in the intermediate temperature range. High-field electron paramagnetic resonance was used to measure the zero-field splitting parameters associated with the spin triplet and quintet states at temperatures below 10 K for complexes 4 and 2 with respective values: D_S=1 = +23.38(1) cm^–1, E_S=1 = +2.79(1) cm^–1, and D_S=2 = +6.9(3) cm^–1, with a distribution of E parameters for the S = 2 state. Solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectra on high-spin complex 1 at room temperature reveal a 2:1 ratio of enantiomers in the chiral conglomerate, and solution CD measurements on the same sample in methanol show that it is stable toward racemization. Solid-state UV–vis absorption spectra on high-spin complex 1 and mixed S = 1/S = 2 sample 5 reveal different intensities at higher energies, in line with the different electronic composition. The statistical prevalence of homochiral crystallization of [Mn(4-OMe-Sal₂323)]⁺ in five lattices with different achiral counterions suggests that the chirality may be directed by the 4-OMe-Sal₂323 ligand.

Zero-field splitting parameters of the spin triplet and quintet forms of a spin-crossover Mn³⁺ complex stabilized in lattices with different counterions are measured by high-field electron paramagnetic resonance at different frequencies. The homochiral crystallization of the enantiopure Δ or Λ forms of the chelate complex, despite the use of achiral anions, is attributed to the steric influence of the ligand substituent.

On-Surface Synthesis: A New Route Realizing Single-Layer Conjugated Metal-Organic Structures

Recently, both experimental and theoretical advances have demonstrated that two-dimensional conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2D-cMOFs) exhibit interesting electronic and magnetic properties, such as high conductivity and ferromagnetism. Theoretical studies have predicted that exotic quantum states, including topological insulating states and superconductivity, emerge in some 2D-MOFs. The high design tunability of MOFs' structure and composition provides great opportunities to realize these structures. However, most conventional synthesis methods yield multilayer structures of the 2D-cMOFs, in which the predicted exotic quantum phases are often quenched because of interlayer interactions. It is highly desirable to synthesize single-layer cMOFs. On-surface synthesis represents a novel strategy toward this goal. In this Perspective, we discuss the recent developments in on-surface synthesis of 1D- and 2D-cMOFs.

Molecular Approach to Engineer Two-Dimensional Devices for CMOS and beyond-CMOS Applications

Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have attracted tremendous research interest over the last two decades. Their unique optical, electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties make 2DMs key building blocks for the fabrication of novel complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) and beyond-CMOS devices. Major advances in device functionality and performance have been made by the covalent or noncovalent functionalization of 2DMs with molecules: while the molecular coating of metal electrodes and dielectrics allows for more efficient charge injection and transport through the 2DMs, the combination of dynamic molecular systems, capable to respond to external stimuli, with 2DMs makes it possible to generate hybrid systems possessing new properties by realizing stimuli-responsive functional devices and thereby enabling functional diversification in More-than-Moore technologies. In this review, we first introduce emerging 2DMs, various classes of (macro)molecules, and molecular switches and discuss their relevant properties. We then turn to 2DM/molecule hybrid systems and the various physical and chemical strategies used to synthesize them. Next, we discuss the use of molecules and assemblies thereof to boost the performance of 2D transistors for CMOS applications and to impart diverse functionalities in beyond-CMOS devices. Finally, we present the challenges, opportunities, and long-term perspectives in this technologically promising field.

Voltage-Induced Bistability of Single Spin-Crossover Molecules in a Two-Dimensional Monolayer

Bistable spin-crossover molecules are particularly interesting for the development of innovative electronic and spintronic devices as they present two spin states that can be controlled by external stimuli. In this paper, we report the voltage-induced switching of the high spin/low spin electronic states of spin-crossover molecules self-assembled in dense 2D networks on Au(111) and Cu(111) by scanning tunneling microscopy at low temperature. On Au(111), voltage pulses lead to the nonlocal switching of the molecules from any─high or low─spin state to the other followed by a spontaneous relaxation toward their initial state within minutes. On the other hand, on Cu(111), single molecules can be addressed at will. They retain their new electronic configuration after a voltage pulse. The memory effect demonstrated on Cu(111) is due to an interplay between long-range intermolecular interaction and molecule/substrate coupling as confirmed by mechanoelastic simulations.

Electron-Induced Spin-Crossover in Self-Assembled Tetramers

The spin crossover compound Fe(H₂B(pyrazole)(pyridylpyrazole))₂ was investigated in detail on Ag(111) with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). A large fraction of the deposited molecules condenses into gridlike tetramers. Two molecules of each tetramer may be converted between two states by current injection. We attribute this effect to a spin transition. This interpretation is supported by control experiments on the analogous, magnetically passive Zn compound that forms virtually identical tetramers but exhibits no switching. The switching yields were studied for various electron energies, and the resulting values exceed those reported from other SCO systems by 2 orders of magnitude. The other two molecules of a tetramer were immutable. However, they may be used as contacts for current injection that leads to conversion of one of their neighbors. This "remote" switching is fairly efficient with yields reduced by only one to two orders of magnitude compared to direct excitation of a switchable molecule. We present a model of the tetramer structure that reproduces key observations from the experiments. In particular, sterical blocking prevents spin crossover of two molecules of a tetramer. Density functional theory calculations show that the model indeed represents a minimum energy structure. They also reproduce STM images and corroborate a remote-switching mechanism that is based on electron transfer between molecules.

Reverse Hofmann-Type Spin-Crossover Compound Showing a Multichannel Controllable Color Change in an Ambient Environment

Materials that demonstrate a multichannel controllable color change in response to external stimuli are fascinating for their potential applications in sensoring and displaying devices. Herein we report a Fe^II spin-crossover (SCO) compound that exhibits both solvatochromism and thermochromism under an ambient environment. This Hofmann-type compound possesses two different pores where the solvent guests can be removed in a two-step process. Because the loss of solvent guests modifies the spin state of magnetic centers, an unusual yellow-red-yellow two-step color change of crystals was detected. Moreover, because of the strong cooperativity of the spin centers, a dramatic red-to-yellow color change of crystals in response to a minute thermal perturbation around 303 K is triggered by an abrupt spin transition of the metal centers. The multichannel controllable dramatic color change demonstrated in the present compound highlights the sensoring and displaying roles of SCO materials.

On-Surface Synthesis of Chlorinated Narrow Graphene Nanoribbon Organometallic Hybrids

Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and their derivatives attract growing attention due to their excellent electronic and magnetic properties as well as the fine-tuning of such properties that can be obtained by heteroatom substitution and/or edge morphology modification. Here, we introduce graphene nanoribbon derivatives-organometallic hybrids with gold atoms incorporated between the carbon skeleton and side Cl atoms. We show that narrow chlorinated 5-AGNROHs (armchair graphene nanoribbon organometallic hybrids) can be fabricated by on-surface polymerization with omission of the cyclodehydrogenation reaction by a proper choice of tailored molecular precursors. Finally, we describe a route to exchange chlorine atoms connected through gold atoms to the carbon skeleton by hydrogen atom treatment. This is achieved directly on the surface, resulting in perfect unsubstituted hydrogen-terminated GNRs. This will be beneficial in the molecule on-surface processing when the preparation of final unsubstituted hydrocarbon structure is desired.

Manipulation of Molecular Spin State on Surfaces Studied by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

The adsorbed magnetic molecules with tunable spin states have drawn wide attention for their immense potential in the emerging fields of molecular spintronics and quantum computing. One of the key issues toward their application is the efficient controlling of their spin state. This review briefly summarizes the recent progress in the field of molecular spin state manipulation on surfaces. We focus on the molecular spins originated from the unpaired electrons of which the Kondo effect and spin excitation can be detected by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS). Studies of the molecular spin-carriers in three categories are overviewed, i.e., the ones solely composed of main group elements, the ones comprising 3d-metals, and the ones comprising 4f-metals. Several frequently used strategies for tuning molecular spin state are exemplified, including chemical reactions, reversible atomic/molecular chemisorption, and STM-tip manipulations. The summary of the successful case studies of molecular spin state manipulation may not only facilitate the fundamental understanding of molecular magnetism and spintronics but also inspire the design of the molecule-based spintronic devices and materials.
