Real-Time Blinking Suppression of Perovskite Quantum Dots by Halide Vacancy Filling

Ligand Equilibrium Influences Photoluminescence Blinking in CsPbBr3: A Change Point Analysis of Widefield Imaging Data

Photoluminescence intermittency remains one of the biggest challenges in realizing perovskite quantum dots (QDs) as scalable single photon emitters. We compare CsPbBr3 QDs capped with different ligands, lecithin, and a combination of oleic acid and oleylamine, to elucidate the role of surface chemistry on photoluminescence intermittency. We employ widefield photoluminescence microscopy to sample the blinking behavior of hundreds of QDs. Using change point analysis, we achieve the robust classification of blinking trajectories, and we analyze representative distributions from large numbers of QDs (Nlecithin = 1308, Noleic acid/oleylamine = 1317). We find that lecithin suppresses blinking in CsPbBr3 QDs compared with oleic acid/oleylamine. Under common experimental conditions, lecithin-capped QDs are 7.5 times more likely to be nonblinking and spend 2.5 times longer in their most emissive state, despite both QDs having nearly identical solution photoluminescence quantum yields. We measure photoluminescence as a function of dilution and show that the differences between lecithin and oleic acid/oleylamine capping emerge at low concentrations during preparation for single particle experiments. From experiment and first-principles calculations, we attribute the differences in lecithin and oleic acid/oleylamine performance to differences in their ligand binding equilibria. Consistent with our experimental data, density functional theory calculations suggest a stronger binding affinity of lecithin to the QD surface compared to oleic acid/oleylamine, implying a reduced likelihood of ligand desorption during dilution. These results suggest that using more tightly binding ligands is a necessity for surface passivation and, consequently, blinking reduction in perovskite QDs used for single particle and quantum light experiments.

A Stable Perovskite Sensitized Photonic Crystal P-N Junction with Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Production

The slow photon effect in inverse opal photonic crystals represents a promising approach to manipulate the interactions between light and matter through the design of material structures. This study introduces a novel ordered inverse opal photonic crystal (IOPC) sensitized with perovskite quantum dots (PQDs), demonstrating its efficacy for efficient visible-light-driven H2 generation via water splitting. The rational structural design contributes to enhanced light harvesting. The sensitization of the IOPC with PQDs improves optical response performance and enhances photocatalytic H2 generation under visible light irradiation compared to the IOPC alone. The designed photoanode exhibits a photocurrent density of 3.42 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs RHE. This work advances the rational design of visible light-responsive photocatalytic heterostructure materials based on wide band gap metal oxides for photoelectrochemical applications.

Exploiting the Photo-Physical Properties of Metal Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals for Bioimaging

Perovskite nanomaterials have recently been exploited for bioimaging applications due to their unique photo-physical properties, including high absorbance, good photostability, narrow emissions, and nonlinear optical properties. These attributes outperform conventional fluorescent materials such as organic dyes and metal chalcogenide quantum dots and endow them with the potential to reshape a wide array of bioimaging modalities. Yet, their full potential necessitates a deep grasp of their structure-attribute relationship and strategies for enhancing water stability through surface engineering for meeting the stringent and unique requirements of each individual imaging modality. This review delves into this evolving frontier, highlighting how their distinctive photo-physical properties can be leveraged and optimized for various bioimaging modalities, including visible light imaging, near-infrared imaging, and super-resolution imaging.

Highly Luminescent and Stable Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals by Interfacial Defect Passivation and Amphiphilic Ligand Capping

Halide vacancies cause lattice degradation and nonradiative losses in halide perovskites. In this study, we strategically fill bromide vacancies in CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals with NaBr, KBr, or CsBr at the organic-aqueous interface for hydrophobic ligand-capped nanocrystals or in a polar solvent (2-propanol) for amphiphilic ligand-capped nanocrystals. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectra, powder X-ray diffraction data, and scanning transmission electron microscopy images help us confirm vacancy filling and the structures of samples. The bromide salts increase the photoluminescence quantum yield (98 ± 2%) of CsPbBr3 by decreasing the nonradiative decay rate. Single-particle studies show the quantum yield increase originates from the poorly luminescent nanocrystals becoming highly luminescent after filling vacancies. Furthermore, we tune the optical band gap (ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared) of the hydrophobic ligand-capped nanocrystals by halide exchange at the toluene-water interface using saturated NaCl or NaI solutions, which completes in about 60 min under continuous mixing. In contrast, the amphiphilic ligand accelerates the halide exchange in 2-propanol, suggesting ambipolar functional groups speed up the ion-exchange reaction. The bromide vacancy-filled or halide-exchanged samples in a toluene-water biphasic solvent show higher stability than amphiphilic ligand-capped samples in 2-propanol. This strategy of defect passivation, ion exchange, and ligand chemistry to improve quantum yields and tune band gaps of halide perovskite nanocrystals can be promising for designing stable and water-soluble perovskite samples for solar cells, light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, and photocatalysts.

2D nanosheets of layered double perovskites: synthesis, photostable bright orange emission and photoluminescence blinking

Lead (Pb)-free layered double perovskites (LDPs) with exciting optical properties and environmental stability have sparked attention in optoelectronics, but their high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield and understanding of the PL blinking phenomenon at the single particle level are still elusive. Herein, we not only demonstrate a hot-injection route for the synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) ∼2-3 layer thick nanosheets (NSs) of LDP, Cs₄CdBi₂Cl₁₂ (pristine), and its partially Mn-substituted analogue [i.e., Cs₄Cd_0.6Mn_0.4Bi₂Cl₁₂ (Mn-substituted)], but also present a solvent-free mechanochemical synthesis of these samples as bulk powders. Bright and intense orange emission has been perceived for partially Mn-substituted 2D NSs with a relatively high PL quantum yield (PLQY) of ∼21%. The PL and lifetime measurements both at cryogenic (77 K) and room temperatures were employed to understand the de-excitation pathways of charge carriers. With the implementation of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy and time-resolved single particle tracking, we identified the occurrence of metastable non-radiative recombination channels in a single NS. In contrast to the rapid photo-bleaching that resulted in a PL blinking-like nature of the controlled pristine NS, the 2D NS of the Mn-substituted sample displayed negligible photo-bleaching with suppression of PL fluctuation under continuous illumination. The blinking-like nature in pristine NSs appeared due to a dynamic equilibrium flanked by the active and in-active states of metastable non-radiative channels. However, the partial substitution of Mn²⁺ stabilized the in-active state of the non-radiative channels, which increased the PLQY and suppressed PL fluctuation and photo-bleaching events in Mn-substituted NSs.

Photoinduced interfacial electron transfer from perovskite quantum dots to molecular acceptors for solar cells

Bandgap-engineered inorganic and hybrid halide perovskite (HP) films, nanocrystals, and quantum dots (PQDs) are promising for solar cells. Fluctuations of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) rates affect the interfacial charge separation efficiencies of such solar cells. Electron donor- or acceptor-doped perovskite samples help analyze PET and harvest photogenerated charge carriers efficiently. Therefore, PET in perovskite-based donor-acceptor (D-A) systems has received considerable attention. We analyzed the fluctuations of interfacial PET from MAPbBr₃ or CsPbBr₃ PQDs to classical electron acceptors such as 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (TCNB) at single-particle and ensemble levels. The significantly negative Gibbs free energy changes of PET estimated from the donor-acceptor redox potentials, the donor-acceptor sizes, and the solvent dielectric properties help us clarify the PET in the above D-A systems. The dynamic nature of PET is apparent from the decrease in photoluminescence (PL) lifetimes and PL photocounts of PQDs with an increase in the acceptor concentrations. Also, the acceptor radical anion spectrum helps us characterize the charge-separated states. Furthermore, the PL blinking time and PET rate fluctuations (10⁸ to 10⁷ s^-1) provide us with single-molecule level information about interfacial PET in perovskites.

Simultaneous Photoluminescence and Photothermal Investigation of Individual CH3NH3PbBr3 Microcrystals

The photoluminescence (PL) of CH₃NH₃PbBr₃ (MAPbBr₃), from thin films to nanoparticles, has been widely studied, providing information about charge carrier dynamics. However, the other energy dissipative channel, nonradiative relaxation, has not been thoroughly investigated due to a lack of proper technology. In this work, we simultaneously investigated the PL and photothermal (PT) properties of single MAPbBr₃ microcrystals (MCs) by a home-built PL and PT microscope. In addition to the direct observation of the heterogeneity of the PL and PT images and kinetics of different MCs, we demonstrated the variation in the absorption of single MAPbBr₃ MCs, which was believed to be constant. We also proved that more absorbed energy dissipated from the nonradiative channel at higher heating power. These results show that PL and PT microscopy is an effective and convenient method to investigate the charge carrier behaviors of optoelectronic materials at the single particle level for a deep understanding of their photophysical processes.

Single-particle optical study on the effect of chloride post-treatment of MAPbI3 nano/microcrystals

Surface passivation by post-treatment with methylammonium chloride (MACl) is regarded as a promising strategy to suppress surface defects in organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites and elevate the efficiency of solar cells based on these materials. However, traditional MACl post-treatment methods often impede the performance of the final device, due to the creation of additional unwanted defects. Herein, we report a novel approach for chloride post-treatment by applying a mixed ethanol/toluene solvent and validate its beneficial effect on the structure, composition, and optical properties of methylammonium lead iodide nano/microcrystals and related photosensitive devices. An optimized (mild) Cl content improves the crystallinity, enhances photoluminescence (PL) intensity, provides longer PL lifetimes, and induces brighter and longer ON-states in single-particle emission trajectories. On top of a reduction in the population percentage of crystals showing gradual photodegradation, our Cl-treatment method even leads to photobrightening. Additionally, the extent of carrier communication throughout spatially distant nanodomains enhances after MACl-based post-modification. Our results demonstrate that surface-bound Cl significantly reduces the trap density induced by under-coordinated lead ions or iodide vacancies and reveal the importance of a careful consideration of the applied Cl content to avoid the generation of high-bandgap MAPbCl₃ heterojunctions upon excessive Cl treatment. Importantly, significant trap passivation upon MACl treatment translates into a more stable and elevated photocurrent in the corresponding photodetector device. We anticipate these findings will be beneficial for designing durable, high-performance lead halide perovskite photonic devices.

Intricate Reaction Pathways on CH3NH3PbI3 Photocatalysts in Aqueous Solution Unraveled by Single-Particle Spectroscopy

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites such as MAPbI₃ (MA⁺ = CH₃NH₃⁺) have emerged as promising materials for solar cells and light-emitting devices. Despite their poor stability against moisture, perovskites work as hydrogen-producing photocatalysts or photosensitizers in perovskite-saturated aqueous solutions. However, the fundamental understanding of how chemical species or support materials in the solution affect the dynamics of the photogenerated charges in perovskites is still insufficient. In this study, we investigated the photoluminescence (PL) properties of MAPbI₃ nanoparticles in aqueous media at the single-particle level. A remarkable PL blinking phenomenon, along with significant decreases in the PL intensity and lifetime compared to those in ambient air, suggested temporal fluctuations in the trapping rates of photogenerated holes by chemical species (I^- and H₃PO₂) in the solution. Moreover, electron transfer from the excited MAPbI₃ to Pt-modified TiO₂ proceeds in a concerted fashion for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under the dynamic solid-solution equilibrium condition.

Charge and energy transfer dynamics in single colloidal quantum dots/monolayer MoS2 heterostructures

The charge and energy transfer dynamics in colloidal CdSeTe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs)/monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) heterostructures have been investigated by time-resolved single-dot photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. A time-gated method is used to separate the PL photons of single QDs from the PL photons of monolayer MoS₂, which are impossible to be separated by the spectral filter due to their spectral overlap. It is found that the energy transfer from MoS₂ to single QDs increases the exciton generation of the QDs by 37.5% and the energy transfer from single QDs to MoS₂ decreases the PL quantum yield of the QDs by 66.9%. In addition, it is found that MoS₂ increases the discharging rate of single QDs by 59%, while the charging rate remains unchanged. This investigation not only provides valuable insight into the exciton generation and recombination at the single-dot level across such hybrid 0D-2D interfaces but also promotes the application of the hybrid system in various optoelectronic devices.

Nanomaterials for Fluorescence and Multimodal Bioimaging

Bioconjugated nanomaterials replace molecular probes in bioanalysis and bioimaging in vitro and in vivo. Nanoparticles of silica, metals, semiconductors, polymers, and supramolecular systems, conjugated with contrast agents and drugs for image-guided (MRI, fluorescence, PET, Raman, SPECT, photodynamic, photothermal, and photoacoustic) therapy infiltrate into preclinical and clinical settings. Small bioactive molecules like peptides, proteins, or DNA conjugated to the surfaces of drugs or probes help us to interface them with cells and tissues. Nevertheless, the toxicity and pharmacokinetics of nanodrugs, nanoprobes, and their components become the clinical barriers, underscoring the significance of developing biocompatible next-generation drugs and contrast agents. This account provides state-of-the-art advancements in the preparation and biological applications of bioconjugated nanomaterials and their molecular, cell, and in vivo applications. It focuses on the preparation, bioimaging, and bioanalytical applications of monomodal and multimodal nanoprobes composed of quantum dots, quantum clusters, iron oxide nanoparticles, and a few rare earth metal ion complexes.

Halide Perovskite Single Crystals and Nanocrystal Films as Electron Donor-Acceptor Heterojunctions

Halide perovskites are materials for future optical displays and solar cells. Electron donor-acceptor perovskite heterostructures with distinguishing halide compositions are promising for transporting and harvesting photogenerated charge carriers. Combined e-beam lithography and anion exchange are promising to develop such heterostructures but challenging to prepare multiple heterojunctions at desired locations in single crystals. We demonstrate swift laser trapping-assisted band gap engineering at the desired locations in MAPbBr₃ microrods, microplates, or nanocrystal thin films. The built-in donor-acceptor double and multi-heterojunction structures let us transport and trap photogenerated charge carriers from wide-band gap bromide to narrow-band gap iodide domains. We discuss the charge carrier transport and trapping mechanisms from the viewpoints of engineered bands and band continuity. This work offers a convenient method for designing single-, double- and multi-heterojunction donor-acceptor halide perovskites for photovoltaic, photonic, and electronic applications.

Programmed Control of Fluorescence Blinking Patterns based on Electron Transfer in DNA

Fluorescence imaging uses changes in the fluorescence intensity and emission wavelength to analyze multiple targets simultaneously. To increase the number of targets that can be identified simultaneously, fluorescence blinking can be used as an additional parameter. To understand and eventually control blinking, we used DNA as a platform to elucidate the processes of electron transfer (ET) leading to blinking, down to the rate constants. With a fixed ET distance, various blinking patterns were observed depending on the DNA sequence between the donor and acceptor units of the DNA platform. The blinking pattern was successfully described with a combination of ET rate constants. Therefore, molecules with various blinking patterns can be developed by tuning ET. It is expected that the number of targets that can be analyzed simultaneously will increase by the power of the number of blinking patterns.

Phase-Stable and Highly Luminescent CsPbI3 Perovskite Nanocrystals with Suppressed Photoluminescence Blinking

Despite their low band gap, the utility of CsPbI₃ nanocrystals (NCs) in solar photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications is rather limited because of their phase instability and photoluminescence (PL) intermittency. Herein we show that phase-pure, monodispersed, stable and highly luminescent CsPbI₃ NCs can be obtained by tweaking the conventional hot-injection method employing NH₄I as an additional precursor. Single-particle studies show a significant suppression of PL blinking. Among all NCs studied, 60% exhibit only high-intensity ON states with a narrow distribution of intensity. The remaining 40% of NCs exhibit a much wider distribution of PL intensity with a significant contribution of low-intensity OFF states. Excellent characteristics of these CsPbI₃ NCs are shown to be the result of NH₄⁺ replacing some surface Cs⁺ of an iodide-rich surface of the NCs. These phase-stable and highly luminescent CsPbI₃ NCs with significantly suppressed PL blinking can be useful single-photon emitters and promising materials for optoelectronic and solar photovoltaic applications.

Nanomaterials for Quantum Information Science and Engineering

Quantum information science and engineering (QISE)-which entails the use of quantum mechanical states for information processing, communications, and sensing-and the area of nanoscience and nanotechnology have dominated condensed matter physics and materials science research in the 21st century. Solid-state devices for QISE have, to this point, predominantly been designed with bulk materials as their constituents. This review considers how nanomaterials (i.e., materials with intrinsic quantum confinement) may offer inherent advantages over conventional materials for QISE. The materials challenges for specific types of qubits, along with how emerging nanomaterials may overcome these challenges, are identified. Challenges for and progress toward nanomaterials-based quantum devices are condidered. The overall aim of the review is to help close the gap between the nanotechnology and quantum information communities and inspire research that will lead to next-generation quantum devices for scalable and practical quantum applications.

Mechano-optical Modulation of Excitons and Carrier Recombination in Self-Assembled Halide Perovskite Quantum Dots

Mechanically modulating optical properties of semiconductor nanocrystals and organic molecules are valuable for mechano-optical and optomechanical devices. Halide perovskites with excellent optical and electronic properties are promising for such applications. We report the mechanically changing excitons and photoluminescence of self-assembled formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr₃) quantum dots. The as-synthesized quantum dots (3.6 nm diameter), showing blue emission and a short photoluminescence lifetime (2.6 ns), form 20-300 nm 2D and 3D self-assemblies with intense green emission in a solution or a film. The blue emission and short photoluminescence lifetime of the quantum dots are different from the delayed (ca. 550 ns) green emission from the assemblies. Thus, we consider the structure and excitonic properties of individual quantum dots differently from the self-assemblies. The blue emission and short lifetime of individual quantum dots are consistent with a weak dielectric screening of excitons or strong quantum confinement. The red-shifted emission and a long photoluminescence lifetime of the assemblies suggest a strong dielectric screening that weakens the quantum confinement, allowing excitons to split into free carriers, diffuse, and trap. The delayed emission suggests nongeminate recombination of diffusing and detrapped carriers. Interestingly, the green emission of the self-assembly blueshifts by applying a lateral mechanical force (ca. 4.65 N). Correspondingly, the photoluminescence lifetime decreases by 1 order of magnitude. These photoluminescence changes suggest the mechanical dissociation of the quantum dot self-assemblies and mechanically controlled exciton splitting and recombination. The mechanically changing emission color and lifetime of halide perovskite are promising for mechano-optical and optomechanical switches and sensors.

Application of Perovskite Quantum Dots as Absorber for Perovskite Solar Cell

Perovskite quantum dots (QDs) preserve the attractive properties of perovskite bulk materials and present additional advantages, owing to their quantum confinement effect, leading to their applicability as an absorber in perovskite solar cells. In this article, the issues and advantages of perovskite QDs are analyzed in terms of purification, device fabrication with perovskite QDs, light absorption, charge transport and stability. In addition, promising strategies to enhance perovskite QDs and QD-based solar cells are elucidated based on exchange chemistry (ion and ligand exchange), passivation engineering (ion and ligand passivation) and structure engineering (conventional/inverted, planar/mesoscopic and dimensionally graded structures). All these discussions will give a clue to the further development of perovskite QDs and thus the advancement of QD-based solar cells.

State of the Art and Prospects for Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Metal-halide perovskites have rapidly emerged as one of the most promising materials of the 21st century, with many exciting properties and great potential for a broad range of applications, from photovoltaics to optoelectronics and photocatalysis. The ease with which metal-halide perovskites can be synthesized in the form of brightly luminescent colloidal nanocrystals, as well as their tunable and intriguing optical and electronic properties, has attracted researchers from different disciplines of science and technology. In the last few years, there has been a significant progress in the shape-controlled synthesis of perovskite nanocrystals and understanding of their properties and applications. In this comprehensive review, researchers having expertise in different fields (chemistry, physics, and device engineering) of metal-halide perovskite nanocrystals have joined together to provide a state of the art overview and future prospects of metal-halide perovskite nanocrystal research.

Revealing Explicit Microsecond Carrier Diffusion from One Emission Center to Another in an All-Inorganic Perovskite Nanocrystal

Blinking of freely diffusing CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals (NCs) is studied using fluorescence lifetime correlation spectroscopy (FLCS). Emitted photons from each NCs are assigned to an emission state (exciton or trap) based on their lifetime. Subsequently, an intrastate autocorrelation function (ACF) and an interstate cross-correlation function (CCF) are constructed. Fitting of the AFCs with an analytical model shows that, at low excitation power, the microsecond blinking timescale of the exciton state matches well with that of the trap state. Most interestingly, both of those timescales further correlate with the microsecond growth timescale of the CCF. The strong anti-correlation of the CCF along with the stretched exponential nature of the blinking kinetics confirms the involvement of carrier diffusion and dispersive trap states in NC blinking. At high excitation power, enhanced sample heterogeneity causes a more dispersive blinking. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a NC blinking study using a single-molecule-based FLCS technique.
