Collective Nanoparticle Dynamics Associated with Bridging Network Formation in Model Polymer Nanocomposites

Filled Elastomers: Mechanistic and Physics-Driven Modeling and Applications as Smart Materials

Elastomers are made of chain-like molecules to form networks that can sustain large deformation. Rubbers are thermosetting elastomers that are obtained from irreversible curing reactions. Curing reactions create permanent bonds between the molecular chains. On the other hand, thermoplastic elastomers do not need curing reactions. Incorporation of appropriated filler particles, as has been practiced for decades, can significantly enhance mechanical properties of elastomers. However, there are fundamental questions about polymer matrix composites (PMCs) that still elude complete understanding. This is because the macroscopic properties of PMCs depend not only on the overall volume fraction (ϕ) of the filler particles, but also on their spatial distribution (i.e., primary, secondary, and tertiary structure). This work aims at reviewing how the mechanical properties of PMCs are related to the microstructure of filler particles and to the interaction between filler particles and polymer matrices. Overall, soft rubbery matrices dictate the elasticity/hyperelasticity of the PMCs while the reinforcement involves polymer-particle interactions that can significantly influence the mechanical properties of the polymer matrix interface. For ϕ values higher than a threshold, percolation of the filler particles can lead to significant reinforcement. While viscoelastic behavior may be attributed to the soft rubbery component, inelastic behaviors like the Mullins and Payne effects are highly correlated to the microstructures of the polymer matrix and the filler particles, as well as that of the polymer-particle interface. Additionally, the incorporation of specific filler particles within intelligently designed polymer systems has been shown to yield a variety of functional and responsive materials, commonly termed smart materials. We review three types of smart PMCs, i.e., magnetoelastic (M-), shape-memory (SM-), and self-healing (SH-) PMCs, and discuss the constitutive models for these smart materials.

Bioinspired pullulan-starch nanoplatelets nanocomposite films with enhanced mechanical properties

Inspired by the leaf-vein network structure, the pullulan-starch nanoplatelets (SNPs) bioinspired films with enhanced strength and toughness were successfully fabricated through a water evaporation-induced self-assembly technique. SNPs (SNP200 and SNP600) of two sizes were separated by differential centrifugation. Interactions between SNPs and pullulan during drying resulted in the vein-like network structure in both nanocomposite films when the appropriate amounts of SNP200 or SNP600 were added to pullulan, respectively. The TS and toughness values of pullulan with 1 % w/w SNP200 films reached up to 51.05 MPa and 69.65 MJ·m-3, which were 86 % and 223 % higher than those of the neat pullulan films, respectively. Moreover, the TS and toughness values of pullulan-SNP200 were significantly higher than those of pullulan-SNP600 films, when SNP content exceeded the 1 % w/w level. By applying a graph theory, the network structures were found to correlate with the mechanical properties of the pullulan-SNPs bioinspired films. The new strategy for designing starch nanoplatelets-based edible films that combine mechanical strength and toughness holds promises for the development of novel biobased composite materials for food packaging application.

Intermittent Defect Fluctuations in Oxide Heterostructures

The heterogeneous nature, local presence, and dynamic evolution of defects typically govern the ionic and electronic properties of a wide variety of functional materials. While the last 50 years have seen considerable efforts into development of new methods to identify the nature of defects in complex materials, such as the perovskite oxides, very little is known about defect dynamics and their influence on the functionality of a material. Here, the discovery of the intermittent behavior of point defects (oxygen vacancies) in oxide heterostructures employing X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy is reported. Local fluctuations between two ordered phases in strained SrCoOx with different degrees of stability of the oxygen vacancies are observed. Ab-initio-informed phase-field modeling reveals that fluctuations between the competing ordered phases are modulated by the oxygen ion/vacancy interaction energy and epitaxial strain. The results demonstrate how defect dynamics, evidenced by measurement and modeling of their temporal fluctuations, give rise to stochastic properties that now can be fully characterized using coherent X-rays, coupled for the first time to multiscale modeling in functional complex oxide heterostructures. The study and its findings open new avenues for engineering the dynamical response of functional materials used in neuromorphic and electrochemical applications.

Robotic pendant drop: containerless liquid for μs-resolved, AI-executable XPCS

The dynamics and structure of mixed phases in a complex fluid can significantly impact its material properties, such as viscoelasticity. Small-angle X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (SA-XPCS) can probe the spontaneous spatial fluctuations of the mixed phases under various in situ environments over wide spatiotemporal ranges (10-6-103 s /10-10-10-6 m). Tailored material design, however, requires searching through a massive number of sample compositions and experimental parameters, which is beyond the bandwidth of the current coherent X-ray beamline. Using 3.7-μs-resolved XPCS synchronized with the clock frequency at the Advanced Photon Source, we demonstrated the consistency between the Brownian dynamics of ~100 nm diameter colloidal silica nanoparticles measured from an enclosed pendant drop and a sealed capillary. The electronic pipette can also be mounted on a robotic arm to access different stock solutions and create complex fluids with highly-repeatable and precisely controlled composition profiles. This closed-loop, AI-executable protocol is applicable to light scattering techniques regardless of the light wavelength and optical coherence, and is a first step towards high-throughput, autonomous material discovery.

Microscopic Origins of the Nonlinear Behavior of Particle-Filled Rubber Probed with Dynamic Strain XPCS

The underlying microscopic response of filler networks in reinforced rubber to dynamic strain is not well understood due to the experimental difficulty of directly measuring filler network behavior in samples undergoing dynamic strain. This difficulty can be overcome with in situ X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) measurements. The contrast between the silica filler and the rubber matrix for X-ray scattering allows us to isolate the filler network behavior from the overall response of the rubber. This in situ XPCS technique probes the microscopic breakdown and reforming of the filler network structure, which are responsible for the nonlinear dependence of modulus on strain, known in the rubber science community as the Payne effect. These microscopic changes in the filler network structure have consequences for the macroscopic material performance, especially for the fuel efficiency of tire tread compounds. Here, we elucidate the behavior with in situ dynamic strain XPCS experiments on industrially relevant, vulcanized rubbers filled (13 vol %) with novel air-milled silica of ultrahigh-surface area (UHSA) (250 m²/g). The addition of a silane coupling agent to rubber containing this silica causes an unexpected and counterintuitive increase in the Payne effect and decrease in energy dissipation. For this rubber, we observe a nearly two-fold enhancement of the storage modulus and virtually equivalent loss tangent compared to a rubber containing a coupling agent and conventional silica. Interpretation of our in situ XPCS results simultaneously with interpretation of traditional dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) strain sweep experiments reveals that the debonding or yielding of bridged bound rubber layers is key to understanding the behavior of rubber formulations containing the silane coupling agent and high-surface area silica. These results demonstrate that the combination of XPCS and DMA is a powerful method for unraveling the microscale filler response to strain which dictates the dynamic mechanical properties of reinforced soft matter composites. With this combination of techniques, we have elucidated the great promise of UHSA silica when used in concert with a silane coupling agent in filled rubber. Such composites simultaneously exhibit large moduli and low hysteresis under dynamic strain.

Melt State Reinforcement of Polyisoprene by Silica Nanoparticles Grafted with Polyisoprene

We systematically vary the nanoparticle (NP) dispersion state in composites formed by mixing polyisoprene homopolymers with polyisoprene grafted silica particles, and demonstrate how creep measurements allow us to overcome the limitations of small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) experiments. This allows us to access nearly 13 orders in time in the mechanical response of the resulting composites. We find that a specific NP morphology, a percolating particle network achieved at intermediate graft densities, significantly reinforces the system and has a lower NP percolation loading threshold relative to other morphologies. These important effects of morphology only become apparent when we combine creep measurements with SAOS re-emphasizing the role of synergistically combining methods to access the mechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites over broad frequency ranges.

Relaxation dynamics of deformed polymer nanocomposites as revealed by small-angle scattering and rheology

The relaxation dynamics of polystyrene (PS)/silica nanocomposites after a large step deformation are studied by a combination of small-angle scattering techniques and rheology. Small-angle X-ray scattering measurements and rheology show clear signatures of nanoparticle aggregation that enhances the mechanical properties of the polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) in the linear viscoelastic regime and during the initial phase of stress relaxation along with accelerated relaxation dynamics. Small-angle neutron scattering experiments under the zero-average-contrast condition reveal, however, smaller structural anisotropy in the PNCs than that in the neat polymer matrix, as well as accelerated anisotropy relaxation. In addition, the degrees of anisotropy reduction and relaxation dynamics acceleration increase with increasing nanoparticle loading. These results are in sharp contrast to the prevailing viewpoint of enhanced molecular deformation as the main mechanism for the mechanical enhancement in PNCs. Furthermore, the observed acceleration of stress relaxation and reduction in structural anisotropy point to two types of nonlinear effects in the relaxation dynamics of PNCs at large deformation.

Direct measurement of Stokes-Einstein diffusion of Cowpea mosaic virus with 19 µs-resolved XPCS

Brownian motion of Cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) in water was measured using small-angle X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (SA-XPCS) at 19.2 µs time resolution. It was found that the decorrelation time τ(Q) = 1/DQ² up to Q = 0.091 nm^-1. The hydrodynamic radius R_H determined from XPCS using Stokes-Einstein diffusion D = kT/(6πηR_H) is 43% larger than the geometric radius R₀ determined from SAXS in the 0.007 M K₃PO₄ buffer solution, whereas it is 80% larger for CPMV in 0.5 M NaCl and 104% larger in 0.5 M (NH₄)₂SO₄, a possible effect of aggregation as well as slight variation of the structures of the capsid resulting from the salt-protein interactions.

Gummy Nanoparticles with Glassy Shells in Electrostatic Nanocomposites

Nanocomposites with unusual and superior properties often contain well-dispersed nanoparticles. Polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS, offers a fluidlike or rubbery (when cross-linked) response, which complements the high-modulus nature of inorganic nanofillers. Systems using PDMS as the nanoparticulate, rather than the continuous, phase are rare because it is difficult to make PDMS nanoparticles. Aqueous dispersions of hydrophobic polymer nanoparticles must survive the considerable contrast in hydrophobicity between water and the polymer component. This challenge is often met with a shell of hydrophilic polymer or by adding surfactant. In the present work, two critical advances for making and using aqueous colloidal dispersions of PDMS are reported. First, PDMS nanoparticles with charged amino end groups were prepared by flash nanoprecipitation in aqueous solutions. Adding a negative polyelectrolyte, poly(styrene sulfonate), PSS, endowed the nanoparticles with a glassy shell, stabilizing them against aggregation. Second, when compressed into a nanocomposite, the small amount of PSS leads to a large increase in bulk modulus. X-ray scattering studies revealed the hierarchical nanostructuring within the composite, with a 4 nm PDMS micelle as the smallest unit. This class of nanoparticle and nanocomposite presents a new paradigm for stabilizing liquidlike building blocks for nanomaterials.

Progress in the self-assembly of organic/inorganic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) hybrids

This Review describes recent progress in the self-assembly of organic/inorganic POSS hybrids derived from mono-, di-, and multi-functionalized POSS cages. We highlight the self-assembled structures and physical properties of giant surfactants and chain-end- and side-chain-type hybrids derived from mono-functionalized POSS cages; main-chain-type hybrids derived from di-functionalized POSS cages; and star-shaped hybrids derived from multi-functionalized POSS cages; with various polymeric attachments, including polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), phenolic, PVPh, and polypeptides.

pyXPCSviewer: an open-source interactive tool for X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy visualization and analysis

pyXPCSviewer, a Python-based graphical user interface that is deployed at beamline 8-ID-I of the Advanced Photon Source for interactive visualization of XPCS results, is introduced. pyXPCSviewer parses rich X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) results into independent PyQt widgets that are both interactive and easy to maintain. pyXPCSviewer is open-source and is open to customization by the XPCS community for ingestion of diversified data structures and inclusion of novel XPCS techniques, both of which are growing demands particularly with the dawn of near-diffraction-limited synchrotron sources and their dedicated XPCS beamlines.

Theory for the Elementary Time Scale of Stress Relaxation in Polymer Nanocomposites

We construct a microscopic theory for the elementary time scale of stress relaxation in dense polymer nanocomposites. The key dynamical event is proposed to involve the rearrangement of cohesive segment-nanoparticle (NP) tight bridging complexes via an activated small NP dilational motion, which allows the confined segments to relax. The corresponding activation energy is determined by the NP bridge coordination number and potential of mean force barrier. The activation energy varies nonlinearly with interfacial cohesion strength and NP concentration, and a universal master curve is predicted. The theory is in very good agreement with experiments. The underlying ideas are relevant to a variety of other hybrid macromolecular materials involving hard particles and soft macromolecules.
