Sulfurized Polyacrylonitrile as a High-Performance and Low-Volume Change Anode for Robust Potassium Storage

MRI-Guided Tumor Therapy Based on Synergy of Ferroptosis, Immunosuppression Reversal and Disulfidptosis

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells have a high demand for oxygen and glucose to fuel their growth and spread, shaping the tumor microenvironment (TME) that can lead to a weakened immune system by hypoxia and increased risk of metastasis. To disrupt this vicious circle and improve cancer therapeutic efficacy, a strategy is proposed with the synergy of ferroptosis, immunosuppression reversal and disulfidptosis. An intelligent nanomedicine GOx-IA@HMON@IO is successfully developed to realize this strategy. The Fe release behaviors indicate the glutathione (GSH)-responsive degradation of HMON. The results of titanium sulfate assay, electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra, 5,5'-Dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid (DTNB) assay and T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrate the mechanism of the intelligent iron atom (IA)-based cascade reactions for GOx-IA@HMON@IO, generating robust reactive oxygen species (ROS). The results on cells and mice reinforce the synergistic mechanisms of ferroptosis, immunosuppression reversal and disulfidptosis triggered by the GOx-IA@HMON@IO with the following steps: 1) GSH peroxidase 4 (GPX4) depletion by disulfidptosis; 2) IA-based cascade reactions; 3) tumor hypoxia reversal; 4) immunosuppression reversal; 5) GPX4 depletion by immunotherapy. Based on the synergistic mechanisms of ferroptosis, immunosuppression reversal and disulfidptosis, the intelligent nanomedicine GOx-IA@HMON@IO can be used for MRI-guided tumor therapy with excellent biocompatibility and safety.

Heteroatoms-Doped Mesoporous Carbon Nanosheets with Dual Diffusion Pathways for Highly Efficient Potassium Ion Storage

The high potassization/depotassization energy barriers and lack of efficient ion diffusion pathways are two serious obstacles for carbon-based materials to achieve satisfactory potassium ion storage performance. Herein, a facile and controllable one-step exfoliation-doping-etching strategy is proposed to construct heteroatoms (N, O, and S)-doped mesoporous few-layer carbon nanosheets (NOS-C). The mixed molten salts of KCl/K2SO4 are innovatively used as the exfoliators, dopants, and etching agents, which enable NOS-C with expanded interlayer spacing and uniformly distributed mesopores with the adjusted electronic structure of surrounding carbon atoms, contributing efficient dual (vertical and horizontal) K-ion diffusion pathways, low potassization/depotassization energy barriers and abundant active sites. Thus, the NOS anodes achieve a high reversible capacity of 516.8 mAh g-1 at 0.05 A g-1, superior rate capability of 202.8 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 and excellent long-term cyclic stability, and their practical application potential is demonstrated by the assembled potassium-ion full batteries. Moreover, a surface-interlayer synergetic K+ storage mechanism is revealed by a combined theoretical and experimental approach including in situ EIS, in situ Raman, ex situ XPS, and SEM analysis. The proposed K+ storage mechanism and unique structural engineering provide a new pathway for potassium-ion storage devices and even beyond.

The Enormous Potential of Sodium/Potassium-Ion Batteries as the Mainstream Energy Storage Technology for Large-Scale Commercial Applications

Cost-effectiveness plays a decisive role in sustainable operating of rechargeable batteries. As such, the low cost-consumption of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) provides a promising direction for "how do SIBs/PIBs replace Li-ion batteries (LIBs) counterparts" based on their resource abundance and advanced electrochemical performance. To rationalize the SIBs/PIBs technologies as alternatives to LIBs from the unit energy cost perspective, this review gives the specific criteria for their energy density at possible electrode-price grades and various battery-longevity levels. The cost ($ kWh-1 cycle-1) advantage of SIBs/PIBs is ascertained by the cheap raw-material compensation for the cycle performance deficiency and the energy density gap with LIBs. Furthermore, the cost comparison between SIBs and PIBs, especially on cost per kWh and per cycle, is also involved. This review explicitly manifests the practicability and cost-effectiveness toward SIBs are superior to PIBs whose commercialization has so far been hindered by low energy density. Even so, the huge potential on sustainability of PIBs, to outperform SIBs, as the mainstream energy storage technology is revealed as long as PIBs achieve long cycle life or enhanced energy density, the related outlook of which is proceeded as the next development directions for commercial applications.

Room-Temperature Salt Template Synthesis of Nitrogen-Doped 3D Porous Carbon for Fast Metal-Ion Storage

The water-soluble salt-template technique holds great promise for fabricating 3D porous materials. However, an equipment-free and pore-size controllable synthetic approach employing salt-template precursors at room temperature has remained unexplored. Herein, we introduce a green room-temperature antisolvent precipitation strategy for creating salt-template self-assembly precursors to universally produce 3D porous materials with controllable pore size. Through a combination of theoretical simulations and advanced characterization techniques, we unveil the antisolvent precipitation mechanism and provide guidelines for selecting raw materials and controlling the size of precipitated salt. Following the calcination and washing steps, we achieve large-scale and universal production of 3D porous materials and the recycling of the salt templates and antisolvents. The optimized nitrogen-doped 3D porous carbon (N-3DPC) materials demonstrate distinctive structural benefits, facilitating a high capacity for potassium-ion storage along with exceptional reversibility. This is further supported by in situ electrochemical impedance spectra, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. The anode shows a high rate capacity of 181 mAh g-1 at 4 A g-1 in the full cell. This study addresses the knowledge gap concerning the room-temperature synthesis of salt-template self-assembly precursors for the large-scale production of porous materials, thereby expanding their potential applications for electrochemical energy conversion and storage.

High-Voltage Potassium Hexacyanoferrate Cathode via High-Entropy and Potassium Incorporation for Stable Sodium-Ion Batteries

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) used as sodium ion battery (SIB) cathodes are usually the focus of attention due to their three-dimensional open frame and high theoretical capacity. Nonetheless, the disadvantages of a low working voltage and inferior structural stability of PBAs prevent their further applications. Herein, we propose constructing the Kx(MnFeCoNiCu)[Fe(CN)6] (HE-K-PBA) cathode by high-entropy and potassium incorporation strategy to simultaneously realize high working voltage and cycling stability. The reaction mechanism of metal cations in HE-K-PBA are revealed by synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and in situ Raman spectra. We also investigate the entropy stabilization mechanism via finite element simulation, demonstrating that HE-K-PBA with small von Mises stress and weak structure strain can significantly mitigate the structural distortion. Benefit from the stable structure and everlasting K+ (de)intercalation, the HE-K-PBA delivers high output voltage (3.46 V), good reversible capacity (120.5 mAh g-1 at 0.01 A g-1), and capacity retention of 90.4% after 1700 cycles at 1.0 A g-1. Moreover, the assembled full cell and all-solid-state batteries with a stable median voltage of 3.29 V over 3000 cycles further demonstrate the application prospects of the HE-K-PBA cathode.

Solvent-Solvent Interaction Mediated Lithium-Ion (De)intercalation Chemistry in Propylene Carbonate Based Electrolytes for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Reversible lithium-ion (de)intercalation in the carbon-based anodes using ethylene carbonate (EC) based electrolytes has enabled the commercialization of lithium-ion batteries, allowing them to dominate the energy storage markets for hand-held electronic devices and electric vehicles. However, this issue always fails in propylene carbonate (PC) based electrolytes due to the cointercalation of Li+-PC. Herein, we report that a reversible Li+ (de)intercalation could be achieved by tuning the solvent-solvent interaction in a PC-based electrolyte containing a fluoroether. We study the existence of such previously unknown interactions mainly by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, while the analysis reveals positive effects on the solvation structure and desolvation process. We have found that the fluoroether solvents interact with PC via their δ-F and δ+H atoms, respectively, leading to a reduced Li+-PC solvent interaction and effective Li+ desolvation followed by a successful Li+ intercalation at the graphite anodes. We also propose an interfacial model to interpret the varied electrolyte stability by the differences in the kinetic and thermodynamic properties of the Li+-solvent and Li+-solvent-anion complexes. Compared to the conventional strategies of tuning electrolyte concentration and/or adding additives, our discovery provides an opportunity to enhance the compatibility of PC-based electrolytes with the graphite anodes, which will enable the design of high-energy density batteries (e.g., Li-S battery) with better environmental adaptabilities.

Engineering CSFe Bond Confinement Effect to Stabilize Metallic-Phase Sulfide for High Power Density Sodium-Ion Batteries

Metallic-phase iron sulfide (e.g., Fe7 S8 ) is a promising candidate for high power density sodium storage anode due to the inherent metal electronic conductivity and unhindered sodium-ion diffusion kinetics. Nevertheless, long-cycle stability can not be achieved simultaneously while designing a fast-charging Fe7 S8 -based anode. Herein, Fe7 S8 encapsulated in carbon-sulfur bonds doped hollow carbon fibers (NHCFs-S-Fe7 S8 ) is designed and synthesized for sodium-ion storage. The NHCFs-S-Fe7 S8 including metallic-phase Fe7 S8 embrace higher electron specific conductivity, electrochemical reversibility, and fast sodium-ion diffusion. Moreover, the carbonaceous fibers with polar CSFe bonds of NHCFs-S-Fe7 S8 exhibit a fixed confinement effect for electrochemical conversion intermediates contributing to long cycle life. In conclusion, combined with theoretical study and experimental analysis, the multinomial optimized NHCFs-S-Fe7 S8 is demonstrated to integrate a suitable structure for higher capacity, fast charging, and longer cycle life. The full cell shows a power density of 1639.6 W kg-1 and an energy density of 204.5 Wh kg-1 , respectively, over 120 long cycles of stability at 1.1 A g-1 . The underlying mechanism of metal sulfide structure engineering is revealed by in-depth analysis, which provides constructive guidance for designing the next generation of durable high-power density sodium storage anodes.

Structure Engineering of BiSbSx Nanocrystals Embedded within Sulfurized Polyacrylonitrile Fibers for High Performance of Potassium-Ion Batteries

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are regarded as promising candidates in next-generation energy storage technology; however, the electrode materials in PIBs are usually restricted by the shortcomings of large volume expansion and poor cycling stability stemming from a high resistance towards diffusion and insertion of large-sized K ions. In this study, BiSbS_x nanocrystals are rationally integrated with sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) fibres through electrospinning technology with an annealing process. Such a unique structure, in which BiSbS_x nanocrystals are embedded inside the SPAN fibre, affords multiple binding sites and a short diffusion length for K⁺ to realize fast kinetics. In addition, the molecular structure of SPAN features robust chemical interactions for stationary diffluent discharge products. Thus, the electrode demonstrates a superior potassium storage performance with an excellent reversible capacity of 790 mAh g^-1 (at 0.1 A g^-1 after 50 cycles) and 472 mAh g^-1 (at 1 A g^-1 after 2000 cycles). It's one of the best performances for metal dichalcogenides anodes for PIBs to date. The unusual performance of the BiSbS_x @SPAN composite is attributed to the synergistic effects of the judicious nanostructure engineering of BiSbS_x nanocrystals as well as the chemical interaction and confinement of SPAN fibers.
