An Efficient Strategy toward Multichambered Carbon Nanoboxes with Multiple Spatial Confinement for Advanced Sodium-Sulfur Batteries

A Critical Review on Room-Temperature Sodium-Sulfur Batteries: From Research Advances to Practical Perspectives

Room-temperature sodium-sulfur (RT-Na/S) batteries are promising alternatives for next-generation energy storage systems with high energy density and high power density. However, some notorious issues are hampering the practical application of RT-Na/S batteries. Besides, the working mechanism of RT-Na/S batteries under practical conditions such as high sulfur loading, lean electrolyte, and low capacity ratio between the negative and positive electrode (N/P ratio), is of essential importance for practical applications, yet the significance of these parameters has long been disregarded. Herein, it is comprehensively reviewed recent advances on Na metal anode, S cathode, electrolyte, and separator engineering for RT-Na/S batteries. The discrepancies between laboratory research and practical conditions are elaborately discussed, endeavors toward practical applications are highlighted, and suggestions for the practical values of the crucial parameters are rationally proposed. Furthermore, an empirical equation to estimate the actual energy density of RT-Na/S pouch cells under practical conditions is rationally proposed for the first time, making it possible to evaluate the gravimetric energy density of the cells under practical conditions. This review aims to reemphasize the vital importance of the crucial parameters for RT-Na/S batteries to bridge the gaps between laboratory research and practical applications.

Rechargeable Metal-Sulfur Batteries: Key Materials to Mechanisms

Rechargeable metal-sulfur batteries are considered promising candidates for energy storage due to their high energy density along with high natural abundance and low cost of raw materials. However, they could not yet be practically implemented due to several key challenges: (i) poor conductivity of sulfur and the discharge product metal sulfide, causing sluggish redox kinetics, (ii) polysulfide shuttling, and (iii) parasitic side reactions between the electrolyte and the metal anode. To overcome these obstacles, numerous strategies have been explored, including modifications to the cathode, anode, electrolyte, and binder. In this review, the fundamental principles and challenges of metal-sulfur batteries are first discussed. Second, the latest research on metal-sulfur batteries is presented and discussed, covering their material design, synthesis methods, and electrochemical performances. Third, emerging advanced characterization techniques that reveal the working mechanisms of metal-sulfur batteries are highlighted. Finally, the possible future research directions for the practical applications of metal-sulfur batteries are discussed. This comprehensive review aims to provide experimental strategies and theoretical guidance for designing and understanding the intricacies of metal-sulfur batteries; thus, it can illuminate promising pathways for progressing high-energy-density metal-sulfur battery systems.

Understanding the charge transfer effects of single atoms for boosting the performance of Na-S batteries

The effective flow of electrons through bulk electrodes is crucial for achieving high-performance batteries, although the poor conductivity of homocyclic sulfur molecules results in high barriers against the passage of electrons through electrode structures. This phenomenon causes incomplete reactions and the formation of metastable products. To enhance the performance of the electrode, it is important to place substitutable electrification units to accelerate the cleavage of sulfur molecules and increase the selectivity of stable products during charging and discharging. Herein, we develop a single-atom-charging strategy to address the electron transport issues in bulk sulfur electrodes. The establishment of the synergistic interaction between the adsorption model and electronic transfer helps us achieve a high level of selectivity towards the desirable short-chain sodium polysulfides during the practical battery test. These finding indicates that the atomic manganese sites have an enhanced ability to capture and donate electrons. Additionally, the charge transfer process facilitates the rearrangement of sodium ions, thereby accelerating the kinetics of the sodium ions through the electrostatic force. These combined effects improve pathway selectivity and conversion to stable products during the redox process, leading to superior electrochemical performance for room temperature sodium-sulfur batteries.

Unraveling the Nucleation and Growth Mechanism of Potassium Metal on 3D Skeletons for Dendrite-Free Potassium Metal Batteries

Designing three-dimensional (3D) porous carbonaceous skeletons for K metal is one of the most promising strategies to inhibit dendrite growth and enhance the cycle life of potassium metal batteries. However, the nucleation and growth mechanism of K metal on 3D skeletons remains ambiguous, and the rational design of suitable K hosts still presents a significant challenge. In this study, the relationships between the binding energy of skeletons toward K and the nucleation and growth of K are systematically studied. It is found that a high binding energy can effectively decrease the nucleation barrier, reduce nucleation volume, and prevent dendrite growth, which is applied to guide the design of 3D current collectors. Density functional theory calculations show that P-doped carbon (P-carbon) exhibits the highest binding energy toward K compared to other elements (e.g., N, O). As a result, the K@P-PMCFs (P-binding porous multichannel carbon nanofibers) symmetric cell demonstrates an excellent cycle stability of 2100 h with an overpotential of 85 mV in carbonate electrolytes. Similarly, the perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride || K@P-PMCFs cell achieves ultralong cycle stability (85% capacity retention after 1000 cycles). This work provides a valuable reference for the rational design of 3D current collectors.

Tailoring Na+ Solvation Environment and Electrode-Electrolyte Interphases with Sn(OTf)2 Additive in Non-flammable Phosphate Electrolytes towards Safe and Efficient Na-S Batteries

Room-temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries are promising for low-cost and large-scale energy storage applications. However, these batteries are plagued by safety concerns due to the highly flammable nature of conventional electrolytes. Although non-flammable electrolytes eliminate the risk of fire, they often result in compromised battery performance due to poor compatibility with sodium metal anode and sulfur cathode. Herein, we develop an additive of tin trifluoromethanesulfonate (Sn(OTf)2 ) in non-flammable phosphate electrolytes to improve the cycling stability of RT Na-S batteries via modulating the Na+ solvation environment and interface chemistry. The additive reduces the Na+ desolvation energy and enhances the electrolyte stability. Moreover, it facilitates the construction of Na-Sn alloy-based anode solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI). These interphases help to suppress the growth of Na dendrites and the dissolution/shuttling of sodium polysulfides (NaPSs), resulting in improved reversible capacity. Specifically, the Na-S battery with the designed electrolyte boosts the capacity from 322 to 906 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 . This study provides valuable insights for the development of safe and high-performance electrolytes in RT Na-S batteries.

Zero-Strain Sodium Lanthanum Titanate Perovskite Embedded in Flexible Carbon Fibers as a Long-Span Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

"High-capacity" graphite and "zero-strain" spinel Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) occupy the majority market of anode materials for Li+ storage in commercial applications. Nevertheless, their intrinsic drawbacks including the unsafe potential of graphite and unsatisfactory capacity of LTO limit the further development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which is unable to satisfy the ever-increasing demands. Here, a novel Na0.35La0.55TiO3 perovskite embedded in multichannel carbon fibers (NLTO-NF) is rationally designed and synthesized through an electrospinning method. It not only has the advantages of a respectable specific capacity of 265 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and superb rate capability, but it also possesses the zero-strain characteristic. Impressively, an ultralong cycling life with 96.3% capacity retention after 9000 cycles at 2 A g-1 is achieved in the half cell, and 90.3% of capacity retention ratio is obtained after even 2500 cycles at 1 A g-1 in the coupled LiFePO4/NLTO-NF full cell. This study introduces a new member with excellent performance to the zero-strain materials family for next-generation LIBs.

Strong d-π Orbital Coupling of Co-C4 Atomic Sites on Graphdiyne Boosts Potassium-Sulfur Battery Electrocatalysis

Potassium-sulfur (K-S) batteries are severely limited by the sluggish kinetics of the solid-phase conversion of K2S3/K2S2 to K2S, the rate-determining and performance-governing step, which urgently requires a cathode with facilitated sulfur accommodation and improved catalytic efficiency. To this end, we leverage the orbital-coupling approach and herein report a strong d-π coupling catalytic configuration of single-atom Co anchored between two alkynyls of graphdiyne (Co-GDY). The d-π orbital coupling of the Co-C4 moiety fully redistributes electrons two-dimensionally across the GDY, and as a result, drastically accelerates the solid-phase K2S3/K2S2 to K2S conversion and enhances the adsorption of sulfur species. Applied as the cathode, the S/Co-GDY delivered a record-high rate performance of 496.0 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 in K-S batteries. In situ and ex situ characterizations coupling density functional theory (DFT) calculations rationalize how the strong d-π orbital coupling of Co-C4 configuration promotes the reversible solid-state transformation kinetics of potassium polysulfide for high-performance K-S batteries.

Optimizing potassium polysulfides for high performance potassium-sulfur batteries

Potassium-sulfur batteries attract tremendous attention as high-energy and low-cost energy storage system, but achieving high utilization and long-term cycling of sulfur remains challenging. Here we show a strategy of optimizing potassium polysulfides for building high-performance potassium-sulfur batteries. We design the composite of tungsten single atom and tungsten carbide possessing potassium polysulfide migration/conversion bi-functionality by theoretical screening. We create two ligand environments for tungsten in the metal-organic framework, which respectively transmute into tungsten single atom and tungsten carbide nanocrystals during pyrolysis. Tungsten carbide provide catalytic sites for potassium polysulfides conversion, while tungsten single atoms facilitate sulfides migration thereby significantly alleviating the insulating sulfides accumulation and the associated catalytic poisoning. Resultantly, highly efficient potassium-sulfur electrochemistry is achieved under high-rate and long-cycling conditions. The batteries deliver 89.8% sulfur utilization (1504 mAh g-1), superior rate capability (1059 mAh g-1 at 1675 mA g-1) and long lifespan of 200 cycles at 25 °C. These advances enlighten direction for future KSBs development.

Phosphor-Doped Carbon Network Electrocatalyst Enables Accelerated Redox Kinetics of Polysulfides for Sodium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries, which have dominated large-scale energy storage for the past three decades, face limitations in energy density and cost. Sulfur, with its impressive capacity of 1675 mAh g-1 and high theoretical energy density of 1274 Wh kg-1, stands out as a promising cathode material, leading to a growing focus on sodium-sulfur (Na-S) batteries as an alternative to address lithium resource scarcity. Nevertheless, the development is restrained by poor conductivity, volume expansion of the sulfur cathode, and the shuttle effect of sodium polysulfides (Na2Sn) in the electrolytes. In this study, a facile method is designed to fabricate phosphor-doped carbon (phos-C), which is then used as a sulfur matrix. This micromesoporous phos-C network enhances sulfur utilization, increases overall cathode conductivity, and effectively mitigates the shuttling of Na2Sn. During the discharge process, phos-C can absorb soluble Na2Sn and increase the conductivity of sulfur, while serving as a reservoir for electrolyte and Na2Sn, thereby preventing their infiltration into the anode and reducing the loss of sodium. As a result, the well-designed sulfur-loaded phos-C (S/phos-C) cathode, employed in the Na-S battery, demonstrates a capacity of 1034 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C (1 C = 1675 mA g-1) and an excellent rate capability of 339 mAh g-1 at 10 C, coupled with a prolonged cycling life up to 2000 cycles at 1 C, exhibiting an ultralow capacity decay rate of 0.013% per cycle. Overall, this study introduces an efficient method for creating long-lasting Na-S batteries.

Oxygen Defect Engineering toward Zero-Strain V2O2.8@Porous Reticular Carbon for Ultrastable Potassium Storage

Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are promising candidates for large-scale energy storage devices due to their high energy density and low cost. However, the large potassium-ion radius leads to its sluggish diffusion kinetics during intercalation into the lattice of the electrode material, resulting in electrode pulverization and poor cycle stability. Herein, vanadium trioxide anodes with different oxygen vacancy concentrations (V2O2.9, V2O2.8, and V2O2.7 determined by the neutron diffraction) are developed for KIBs. The V2O2.8 anode is optimal and exhibits excellent potassium storage performance due to the realization of expanded interlayer spacing and efficient ion/electron transport. In situ X-ray diffraction indicates that V2O2.8 is a zero-strain anode with a volumetric strain of 0.28% during the charge/discharge process. Density functional theory calculations show that the impacts of oxygen defects are embodied in reducing the band gap, increasing electron transfer ability, and lowering the diffusion energy barriers for potassium ions. As a result, the electrode of nanosized V2O2.8 embedded in porous reticular carbon (V2O2.8@PRC) delivers high reversible capacity (362 mAh g-1 at 0.05 A g-1), ultralong cycling stability (98.8% capacity retention after 3000 cycles at 2 A g-1), and superior pouch-type full-cell performance (221 mAh g-1 at 0.05 A g-1). This work presents an oxygen defect engineering strategy for ultrastable KIBs.

P-doped porous carbon from camellia shell for high-performance room temperature sodium-sulfur batteries

Room-temperature sodium-sulfur batteries are still hampered by severe shuttle effects and sluggish kinetics. Most of the sulfur hosts require high cost and complex synthesis process. Herein, a facile method is proposed to prepare a phosphorous doped porous carbon (CSBP) with abundant defect sites from camellia shell by oxidation pretreatment combined with H3PO4activation. The pretreatment can introduce pores and adjust the structure of biochar precursor, which facilitates the further activation of H3PO4and effectively avoids the occurrence of large agglomeration. Profiting from the synergistic effects of physical confinement and doping effect, the prepared CSBP/S cathode delivers a high reversible capacity of 804 mAh g-1after 100 cycles at 0.1 C and still maintains an outstanding capacity of 458 mAh g-1after 500 cycles at 0.5 C (1 C = 1675 mA g-1). This work provides new insights into the rational design of the microstructures of carbon hosts for high-performance room temperature sodium-sulfur batteries.

A General Strategy for Synthesis of Binary Transition Metal Phosphides Hollow Sandwich Heterostructures

The hollow sandwich core-shell micro-nanomaterials are widely used in materials, chemistry, and medicine, but their fabrication, particularly for transition metal phosphides (TMPs), remains a great challenge. Herein, a general synthesis strategy is presented for binary TMPs hollow sandwich heterostructures with vertically interconnected nanosheets on the inside and outside surfaces of polyhedron FeCoP_x /C, demonstrated by a variety of transition metals (including Co, Fe, Cd, Mn, Cu, Cr, and Ni). Density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals the process and universal mechanism of layered double hydroxide (LDH) growth on Prussian blue analog (PBA) surface in detail for the first time, which provides the theoretical foundations for feasibility and rationality of the synthesis strategy. This unique structure exhibits a vertical nanosheet-shell-vertical nanosheet configuration combining the advantages of sandwich, hollow and vertical heterostructures, effectively achieving their synergistic effect. As a proof-of-concept of their applications, the CoNiP_x @FeCoP_x /C@CoNiP_x hollow sandwich polyhedron architectures (representative samples) show excellent catalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline electrolytes. This work provides a general method for constructing hollow-sandwich micro-nanostructures, which provides more ideas and directions for design of micro-nano materials with special geometric topology.

Three-Dimensional Honeycomb-Like Carbon as Sulfur Host for Sodium-Sulfur Batteries without the Shuttle Effect

Sodium-sulfur batteries operating at ambient temperature are being extensively studied because of the high theoretical capacity and abundant resources, yet the long-chain polysulfides' shuttle effect causes poor cycling performance of Na-S batteries. We report an annealing/etching method to converse low-cost wheat bran to a 3D honeycomb-like carbon with abundant micropores (WBMC), which is smaller than S₈ molecular size (∼0.7 nm). Thus, the microporous structure could only fill small molecular sulfur (S_2-4). The micropores made sulfur a one-step reaction without the shuttle effect due to the formed short-chain polysulfides being insoluble. The WBMC@S exhibits an excellent initial capacity (1413 mAh g^-1) at 0.2 C, outstanding cycling performance (822 mAh g^-1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 C), and high rate performance (483 mAh g^-1 at 3.0 C). The electrochemical performance proves that the steric confinement of micropores effectively terminates the shuttle effect.

Catalytic Effects of Electrodes and Electrolytes in Metal-Sulfur Batteries: Progress and Prospective

Metal-sulfur (M-S) batteries are promising energy-storage devices due to their advantages such as large energy density and the low cost of the raw materials. However, M-S batteries suffer from many drawbacks. Endowing the electrodes and electrolytes with the proper catalytic activity is crucial to improve the electrochemical properties of M-S batteries. With regard to the S cathodes, advanced electrode materials with enhanced electrocatalytic effects can capture polysulfides and accelerate electrochemical conversion and, as for the metal anodes, the proper electrode materials can provide active sites for metal deposition to reduce the deposition potential barrier and control the electroplating or stripping process. Moreover, an advanced electrolyte with desirable design can catalyze electrochemical reactions on the cathode and anode in high-performance M-S batteries. In this review, recent progress pertaining to the design of advanced electrode materials and electrolytes with the proper catalytic effects is summarized. The current progress of S cathodes and metal anodes in different types of M-S batteries are discussed and future development directions are described. The objective is to provide a comprehensive review on the current state-of-the-art S cathodes and metal anodes in M-S batteries and research guidance for future development of this important class of batteries.

Porosity Engineering towards Nitrogen-Rich Carbon Host Enables Ultrahigh Capacity Sulfur Cathode for Room Temperature Potassium-Sulfur Batteries

Potassium-sulfur batteries (KSBs) are regarded as a promising large-scale energy storage technology, owing to the high theoretical specific capacity and intrinsically low cost. However, the commercialization of KSBs is hampered by the low sulfur utilization and notorious shuttle effect. Herein, we employ a porosity engineering strategy to design nitrogen-rich carbon foam as an efficient sulfur host. The tremendous micropores magnify the chemical interaction between sulfur species and the polar nitrogen functionalities decorated carbon surface, which significantly improve the sulfur utilization and conversion. Meanwhile, the abundant mesopores provide ample spaces, accommodating the large volume changes of sulfur upon reversible potassation. Resultantly, the constructed sulfur cathode delivers an ultrahigh initial reversible capacity of 1470 mAh g^-1 (87.76% of theoretical capacity) and a superior rate capacity of 560 mAh g^-1 at 2 C. Reaching the K₂S phase in potassiation is the essential reason for obtaining the ultrahigh capacity. Nonetheless, systematic kinetics analyses demonstrate that the K₂S involved depotassiation deteriorates the charge kinetics. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that the nitrogen-rich micropore surface facilitated the sulfur reduction for K₂S but created a higher energy barrier for the K₂S decomposition, which explained the discrepancy in kinetics modification effect produced by the porosity engineering.

Hierarchical Nanocapsules of Cu-Doped MoS2@H-Substituted Graphdiyne for Magnesium Storage

Hierarchical nanocomposites, which integrate electroactive materials into carbonaceous species, are significant in addressing the structural stability and electrical conductivity of electrode materials in post-lithium-ion batteries. Herein, a hierarchical nanocapsule that encapsulates Cu-doped MoS₂ (Cu-MoS₂) nanopetals with inner added skeletons in an organic-carbon-rich nanotube of hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne (HsGDY) has been developed for rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMB). Notably, both the incorporation of Cu in MoS₂ and the generation of the inner added nanoboxes are developed from a dual-template of Cu-cysteine@HsGDY hybrid nanowire; the synthesis involves two morphology/composition evolutions by CuS@HsGDY intermediates both taking place sequentially in one continuous process. These Cu-doped MoS₂ nanopetals with stress-release skeletons provide abundant active sites for Mg²⁺ storage. The microporous HsGDY enveloped with an extended π-conjugation system offers more effective electron and ion transfer channels. These advantages work together to make this nanocapsule an effective cathode material for RMB with a large reversible capacity and superior rate and cycling performance.
