Quaternary Artificial Nacre-Based Electronic Textiles with Enhanced Mechanical and Flame-Retardant Performance

Lightweight, flame retardant biomass aerogels combining with multi-functionalities are promising for thermal insulation, noise absorption and smart sensors. However, high flammability hinders the application of these aerogels in extreme condition. Herein, lightweight, flame retardant aerogel with fire-warning properties fabricated from resource-abundant graphite and green carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is reported. During sonicating expandable graphite (EG) in CMC solution, CMC not only fabricates the downsizing process via hydrogen bonding effect but also forms stable dispersions. Then biomass aerogel is fabricated by freeze-drying strategy and enhanced by metal ionic cross-linking method. This aerogel demonstrates Janus properties for electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity. Due to the synergistic flame retardant effect of graphite nanocomposite and metal ions with a barrier effect and catalytic carbonization capacity, the flame retardancy of these aerogels are enhanced with fire-warning properties. Furthermore, these aerogels are used for monitoring physical deformations as smart sensors, which provides inspiration and a sustainable solution for developing low-cost biomass aerogel with multifunction.

Porous Conductive Textiles for Wearable Electronics

Over the years, researchers have made significant strides in the development of novel flexible/stretchable and conductive materials, enabling the creation of cutting-edge electronic devices for wearable applications. Among these, porous conductive textiles (PCTs) have emerged as an ideal material platform for wearable electronics, owing to their light weight, flexibility, permeability, and wearing comfort. This Review aims to present a comprehensive overview of the progress and state of the art of utilizing PCTs for the design and fabrication of a wide variety of wearable electronic devices and their integrated wearable systems. To begin with, we elucidate how PCTs revolutionize the form factors of wearable electronics. We then discuss the preparation strategies of PCTs, in terms of the raw materials, fabrication processes, and key properties. Afterward, we provide detailed illustrations of how PCTs are used as basic building blocks to design and fabricate a wide variety of intrinsically flexible or stretchable devices, including sensors, actuators, therapeutic devices, energy-harvesting and storage devices, and displays. We further describe the techniques and strategies for wearable electronic systems either by hybridizing conventional off-the-shelf rigid electronic components with PCTs or by integrating multiple fibrous devices made of PCTs. Subsequently, we highlight some important wearable application scenarios in healthcare, sports and training, converging technologies, and professional specialists. At the end of the Review, we discuss the challenges and perspectives on future research directions and give overall conclusions. As the demand for more personalized and interconnected devices continues to grow, PCT-based wearables hold immense potential to redefine the landscape of wearable technology and reshape the way we live, work, and play.

Affine Deformation and Self-Assembly Alignment in Hydrogel Nanocomposites

Tailoring the order in hierarchical structures is a key goal of bioinspired nanocomposite design. Recently, nacre-like materials have been developed by solvent evaporation methods that are scalable and attain advanced functionalities. However, understanding the alignment mechanisms of 2D fillers, nanosheets, or platelets remains challenging. This work explores possible pathways for nanocomposite ordering via orientation distribution functions. We demonstrate how the immobilization of 2D materials via (pseudo)network formation is crucial to alignment based on evaporation. We show a modified affine deformation model that describes such evaporative methods. In this, a gel network develops enough yield stress and uniformly deforms as drying proceeds, along with the immobilized particles, causing an in-plane orientation. Herein, we tested the dominance of this approach by using a thermo-reversible gel for rapid montmorillonite (MMT) particle fixation. We researched gelatin/MMT as a model system to investigate the effects of high loadings, orientational order, and aspect ratio. The nacre-like nanocomposites showed a semiconstant order parameter (⟨P2⟩ ∼ 0.7) over increasing nanofiller content up to 64 vol % filler. This remarkable alignment resulted in continuously improved mechanical and water vapor barrier properties over unusually large filler fractions. Some variations in stiffness and diffusion properties were observed, possibly correlated to the applied drying conditions of the hybrid hydrogels. The affine deformation strategy holds promise for developing next-generation advanced materials with tailored properties even at (very) high filler loadings. Furthermore, a gelling approach offers the advantages of simplicity and versatility in the formulation of the components, which is useful for large-scale fabrication methods.

Multifunctional Flame-Retardant, Thermal Insulation, and Antimicrobial Wood-Based Composites

Wood has been used in a variety of applications in our daily lives and military industry. Nevertheless, its flammability causes potential fire risks and hazards. Improving the flame retardancy of wood is a challenging task. Herein, a phytic acid-based flame retardant (referred to as AMPA) was synthesized based on supramolecular reactions between melamine and p-amino-benzene sulfonic acid followed by a reaction with phytic acid using deionized water as the solvent. A composite wood was prepared by removing lignin to tailor the unique mesoporous structure of the material, followed by coating AMPA on the surfaces of wood microchannels. The limiting oxygen index of wood has been improved to 52.5% with the addition of 5.6 wt % AMPA. The peak heat release rate for the prepared composite wood was reduced by 81% compared to that for delignified wood, which demonstrates the excellent flame-retardant performance of the prepared composite wood. Furthermore, AMPA and mesoporous structures endow antimicrobial and thermal insulation functions. Hence, this work provides a feasible method for preparing flame-retardant wood-based materials for diversified applications.

Advances in the Robustness of Wearable Electronic Textiles: Strategies, Stability, Washability and Perspective

Flexible electronic textiles are the future of wearable technology with a diverse application potential inspired by the Internet of Things (IoT) to improve all aspects of wearer life by replacing traditional bulky, rigid, and uncomfortable wearable electronics. The inherently prominent characteristics exhibited by textile substrates make them ideal candidates for designing user-friendly wearable electronic textiles for high-end variant applications. Textile substrates (fiber, yarn, fabric, and garment) combined with nanostructured electroactive materials provide a universal pathway for the researcher to construct advanced wearable electronics compatible with the human body and other circumstances. However, e-textiles are found to be vulnerable to physical deformation induced during repeated wash and wear. Thus, e-textiles need to be robust enough to withstand such challenges involved in designing a reliable product and require more attention for substantial advancement in stability and washability. As a step toward reliable devices, we present this comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art advances in substrate geometries, modification, fabrication, and standardized washing strategies to predict a roadmap toward sustainability. Furthermore, current challenges, opportunities, and future aspects of durable e-textiles development are envisioned to provide a conclusive pathway for researchers to conduct advanced studies.
