Direct Readout of Homo- vs Heterochiral Ligand Shell of Quantum Dots

The chiroptical activity of various semiconductor inorganic nanocrystalline materials has typically been tested using circular dichroism or circularly polarized luminescence. Herein, we report on a high-throughput screening method for identifying and differentiating chiroptically active quantum-sized ZnO crystals using Raman spectroscopy combined with principal component analysis. ZnO quantum dots (QDs) coated by structurally diverse homo- and heterochiral aminoalcoholate ligands (cis- and trans-1-amino-2-indanolate, 2-amino-1-phenylethanolate, and diphenyl-2-pyrrolidinemethanolate) were prepared using the one-pot self-supporting organometallic procedure and then extensively studied toward the identification of specific Raman fingerprints and spectral variations. The direct comparison between the spectra demonstrates that it is very difficult to make definite recognition and identification between QDs coated with enantiomers based only on the differences in the respective Raman bands' position shifts and their intensities. However, the applied approach involving the principal component analysis performed on the Raman spectra allows the simultaneous differentiation and identification of the studied QDs. The first and second principal components explain 98, 97, 97, and 87% of the variability among the studied families of QDs and demonstrate the possibility of using the presented method as a qualitative assay. Thus, the reported multivariate approach paves the way for simultaneous differentiation and identification of chirotopically active semiconductor nanocrystals.

Nanocrystal Assemblies: Current Advances and Open Problems

We explore the potential of nanocrystals (a term used equivalently to nanoparticles) as building blocks for nanomaterials, and the current advances and open challenges for fundamental science developments and applications. Nanocrystal assemblies are inherently multiscale, and the generation of revolutionary material properties requires a precise understanding of the relationship between structure and function, the former being determined by classical effects and the latter often by quantum effects. With an emphasis on theory and computation, we discuss challenges that hamper current assembly strategies and to what extent nanocrystal assemblies represent thermodynamic equilibrium or kinetically trapped metastable states. We also examine dynamic effects and optimization of assembly protocols. Finally, we discuss promising material functions and examples of their realization with nanocrystal assemblies.

Advanced Nanomaterials in Medical 3D Printing

3D printing is now recognized as a significant tool for medical research and clinical practice, leading to the emergence of medical 3D printing technology. It is essential to improve the properties of 3D-printed products to meet the demand for medical use. The core of generating qualified 3D printing products is to develop advanced materials and processes. Taking advantage of nanomaterials with tunable and distinct physical, chemical, and biological properties, integrating nanotechnology into 3D printing creates new opportunities for advancing medical 3D printing field. Recently, some attempts are made to improve medical 3D printing through nanotechnology, providing new insights into developing advanced medical 3D printing technology. With high-resolution 3D printing technology, nano-structures can be directly fabricated for medical applications. Incorporating nanomaterials into the 3D printing material system can improve the properties of the 3D-printed medical products. At the same time, nanomaterials can be used to expand novel medical 3D printing technologies. This review introduced the strategies and progresses of improving medical 3D printing through nanotechnology and discussed challenges in clinical translation.

Surface Sites and Ligation in Amine-capped CdSe Nanocrystals

Converting colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) into devices for various applications is facilitated by designing and controlling their surface properties. One key strategy for tailoring surface properties is thus to choose tailored surface ligands. In that context, amines have been universally used, with the goal to improve NCs synthesis, processing and performances. However, understanding the nature of surface sites in amine-capped NCs remains challenging, due to the complex surface compositions as well as surface ligands dynamic. Here, we investigate both surface sites and amine ligation in CdSe NCs by combining advanced NMR spectroscopy and computational modelling. Notably, dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) enhanced 113 Cd and 77 Se 1D NMR helps to identify both bulk and surface sites of NCs, while 113 Cd 2D NMR spectroscopy enables to resolve amines terminated sites on both Se-rich and nonpolar surfaces. In addition to directly bonding to surface sites, amines are shown to also interact through hydrogen-bonding with absorbed water as revealed by 15 N NMR, augmented with computations. The characterization methodology developed for this work provides unique molecular-level insight into the surface sites of a range of amine-capped CdSe NCs, and paves the way to identify structure-function relationships and rational approaches towards colloidal NCs with tailored properties.

Investigation of the Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production of Semiconductor Nanocrystal-Based Hydrogels

Destabilization of a ligand-stabilized semiconductor nanocrystal solution with an oxidizing agent can lead to a macroscopic highly porous self-supporting nanocrystal network entitled hydrogel, with good accessibility to the surface. The previously reported charge carrier delocalization beyond a single nanocrystal building block in such gels can extend the charge carrier mobility and make a photocatalytic reaction more probable. The synthesis of ligand-stabilized nanocrystals with specific physicochemical properties is possible, thanks to the advances in colloid chemistry made in the last decades. Combining the properties of these nanocrystals with the advantages of nanocrystal-based hydrogels will lead to novel materials with optimized photocatalytic properties. This work demonstrates that CdSe quantum dots, CdS nanorods, and CdSe/CdS dot-in-rod-shaped nanorods as nanocrystal-based hydrogels can exhibit a much higher hydrogen production rate compared to their ligand-stabilized nanocrystal solutions. The gel synthesis through controlled destabilization by ligand oxidation preserves the high surface-to-volume ratio, ensures the accessible surface area even in hole-trapping solutions and facilitates photocatalytic hydrogen production without a co-catalyst. Especially with such self-supporting networks of nanocrystals, the problem of colloidal (in)stability in photocatalysis is circumvented. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical measurements reveal the advantageous properties of the 3D networks for application in photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Microfluidic synthesis of monodisperse and size-tunable CsPbBr3 supraparticles

The highly controlled, microfluidic template-assisted self-assembly of CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals into spherical supraparticles is presented, achieving precise control over average supraparticle size through the variation of nanocrystal concentration and droplet size; thus facilitating the synthesis of highly monodisperse, sub-micron supraparticles (with diameters between 280 and 700 nm).

Self-Assembly of Nanocrystalline Structures from Freestanding Oxide Membranes

The exploration of crystalline nanostructures enhances the understanding of quantum phenomena occurring in spatially confined quantum matter and may lead to functional materials with unforeseen applications. A novel route to fabricating nanocrystalline oxide structures of exceptional quality is presented. This is achieved by utilizing a self-assembly process of ultrathin membranes composed of the desired oxide. The thermally induced self-assembly of nanocrystalline structures is driven by dewetting the oxide membranes once they are lifted off and transferred onto sapphire surfaces. In three successive steps, the process provides nanovoids, nanowires, and nanocrystals. Regardless of substrate orientation, the nanostructures are highly anisotropic in shape due to material retraction favoring low-index crystalline lattice directions of the membranes. The orientation of the nanostructures is provided precisely by the crystal lattice of the transferred membrane. The microstructure of the nanocrystals exhibits exceptional quality, characterized by a pristine crystal structure and uniform stoichiometry, both maintained all the way down to the well-developed crystalline facets. The demonstrated self-assembly process holds the potential to improve the understanding of surface diffusion phenomena at the interface of materials, which is important for advancing epitaxial growth technology and paves the way to fabricating crystalline nanostructures by the transfer and self-assembly of membranes.

One-Pot Synthesis of Robust Fluorescent Nanocomposite Gel via Frontal Polymerization

Fluorescent nanocomposite gels have attracted increasing attention due to their excellent optical properties, as well as enhanced mechanical strength originating from the nanoparticles. At present, two-step methods are usually employed, where fluorescent nanoparticles are firstly prepared, followed by mixing with gel precursor to achieve the final products after gelation, which suffer from the disadvantages of a tedious and time-consuming process. Thus, the development of a facile strategy is highly desirable, which still remains an obstacle. Herein, a new one-pot synthesis method towards robust fluorescent nanocomposite gels via frontal polymerization (FP) is proposed, where small molecular precursors (citric acid (CA) and urea, or L-cysteine) and gel precursor (vinyl monomers) are mixed together as co-reactants. During the FP process, a lot of heat release gives rise to the generation of carbonized polymer dots (CPDs). Thus, companying with the propagating of the polymerization, the production of fluorescent CPDs/gel composite is completed. In addition, as a nanofiller, CPDs dramatically enhance the mechanical property of the CPDs/gel composite. This work proposes a new fast and efficient one-pot strategy for the production of CPDs/gel composite, which will guide the development of high-performance polymer nanocomposites through an in situ synchronous reaction fashion.

Recent Advances in Supramolecular-Macrocycle-Based Nanomaterials in Cancer Treatment

Cancer is a severe threat to human life. Recently, various therapeutic strategies, such as chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy, and combination therapy have been extensively applied in cancer treatment. However, the clinical benefits of these therapeutics still need improvement. In recent years, supramolecular chemistry based on host-guest interactions has attracted increasing attention in biomedical applications to address these issues. In this review, we present the properties of the major macrocyclic molecules and the stimulus-response strategies used for the controlled release of therapeutic agents. Finally, the applications of supramolecular-macrocycle-based nanomaterials in cancer therapy are reviewed, and the existing challenges and prospects are discussed.

Surface functionalization of inorganic nanoparticles with ligands: a necessary step for their utility

The importance of protecting inorganic nanoparticles with organic ligands and thus imparting the needed stabilization as colloidal dispersions for their potential applications is highlighted in this review.

Absolute Counting Method with Multiplexing Capability for Estimating the Number Concentration of Nanoparticles Using Anisotropically Collapsed Gels

Number concentration─the number of nanoparticles in a given volume─is an important characteristic of any nanoparticle dispersion. However, its estimation for small nanoparticles (∼30 nm) is generally challenging. We introduce an absolute and widely applicable method for analyzing aqueous dispersions of nanoparticles. An innovative immobilization of nanomaterials in the anisotropically collapsed agarose gel is pioneered, followed by optical microscopy and nanoparticle counting. The number of counted nanoparticles is inherently coupled with sampled volume (517 pL) and translates to the number concentration. Photon-upconversion, fluorescence, bright-field, and dark-field microscopy techniques have been proven applicable and used for imaging lanthanide-doped photon-upconversion nanoparticles, their bioconjugates with antibodies, silica dye-doped fluorescent nanoparticles, quantum dots, and pure silica submicron particles. The precision and linearity were characterized by constructing a dilution series of photon-upconversion nanoparticles. The limit of detection was 2.0 × 10⁶ mL^-1, and the working range was from 4.4 × 10⁷ to 2.2 × 10¹⁰ mL^-1. The quantification of nanoparticle clusters was achieved by a thorough analysis of the micrographs. The accuracy was confirmed using gravimetric analysis and transmission electron microscopy as a reference. Multiplexed detection of two nanoparticle types in a mixed dispersion was feasibly demonstrated. The low thickness of the collapsed gel (<1 μm) supported extremely sensitive imaging. This was proven by imaging Tm³⁺-doped photon-upconversion nanoparticles (17 nm hydrodynamic diameter) with a nanoparticle emission rate of only ∼900 photons/s at a wavelength of 800 nm (excitation wavelength 976 nm).
