Light-to-Hydrogen Improvement Based on Three-Factored Au@CeO2/Gr Hierarchical Photocatalysts

Modulating band structure through introducing Cu0/CuxO composites for the improved visible light driven ammonia synthesis

The photocatalytic performance of ceria-based materials can be tuned by adjusting the surface structures with decorating the transition-metal, which are considered as the important active sites. Herein, cuprous oxide-metallic copper composite-doped ceria nanorods were assembled through a simple hydrothermal reduction method. The photocatalytic ammonia synthesis rates exhibit an inverted "V-shaped" trend with increasing Cu0/CuxO mole ratio. The best ammonia production rate, approximately 900 or 521 µmol·gcal-1·h-1 under full-spectra or visible light, can be achieved when the Cu0/CuxO ratio is approximately 0.16, and this value is 8 times greater than that of the original sample. The absorption edge of the as-prepared samples shifted towards visible wavelengths, and they also had appropriate ammonia synthesis levels. This research provides a strategy for designing noble metal-free photocatalysts through introducing the metal/metallic oxide compositesto the catalysts.

Pt Single Atoms Supported on Defect Ceria as an Active and Stable Dual-Site Catalyst for Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

This work evaluates the feasibility of alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) using Pt single-atoms (1.0 wt %) on defect-rich ceria (Pt1/CeOx) as an active and stable dual-site catalyst. The catalyst displayed a low overpotential and a small Tafel slope in an alkaline medium. Moreover, Pt1/CeOx presented a high mass activity and excellent durability, competing with those of the commercial Pt/C (20 wt %). In this picture, the defective CeOx is active for water adsorption and dissociation to create H* intermediates, providing the first site where the reaction occurs. The H* intermediate species then migrate to adsorb and react on the Pt2+ isolated atoms, the site where H2 is formed and released. DFT calculations were also performed to obtain mechanistic insight on the Pt1/CeOx catalyst for the HER. The results indicate a new possibility to improve the state-of-the-art alkaline HER catalysts via a combined effect of the O vacancies on the ceria support and Pt2+ single atoms.

Enhanced plasmonic photocatalytic performance of C3N4/Cu by the introduction of a reduced graphene oxide interlayer

Cu nanoparticles (NPs) are low-cost surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) metal nanostructures, and their SPR properties can be used to enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of carbon nitride (C₃N₄). But their actual performance is usually limited, and one key factor is their poor interfacial quality. In this work, a highly conductive reduced graphene oxide (RGO) interlayer is introduced between protonated C₃N₄ (PCN) nanosheets and Cu NPs, which can act as an efficient sink for photogenerated electrons from C₃N₄ and hot electrons from Cu NPs, and simultaneously serve as reaction sites for the hydrogen evolution reaction, and accelerate the charge transport by the formed C-O-C and C-O-Cu bonds. The optimal hydrogen evolution rate of the optimized PCN/RGO/Cu is 1.30 mmol g^-1 h^-1, which is 6.76, 2.47 and 2.41 times that of PCN, PCN/RGO and PCN/Cu, respectively, and it can further reach up to 13.22 mmol g^-1 h^-1 by loading moderate Pt NPs. Meanwhile, the introduced RGO can effectively anchor Cu NPs to enhance the stability of the photocatalyst. In addition, due to the broad SPR response of Cu NPs, a near-infrared photocatalytic performance is realized for PCN/RGO/Cu with an apparent quantum efficiency of 0.46% at 765 nm.

Remove humic acid from water quickly using only oxygen and sulfite at nickel cobalt spinel catalyst

The typical refractory organic pollutant, humic acid (HA), causes many water and wastewater treatment obstacles. In this study, a novel method was proposed to degrade HA based on the low-temperature (<100 °C) catalytic air oxidation technology (LTCAO) using the NiCo-spinel (NCO) as a catalyst and the sulfite as a promoter. Sulfite enhanced the quantity of mineralized HA to 2.4 times that without sulfite assistance, and the removal rate of total organic carbon reached 93.1% within 60 min at 90 °C. HA gradually degrades into small organic molecules and is mineralized through interfacial reactions and radical paths. Sulfite plays a triple role in these reactions. Sulfite sulfonated HA destroyed its pseudomicellar structure, making HA easily oxidized. Sulfite also coordinated with NCO and promoted the internal electronic hopping conduction of NCO because of the fast electron transfer between SO₃^2- and the h⁺sites, thus accelerating the electron transfer between HA and O₂ mediated by NCO. In addition, the coordinated SO₃^2- was activated to form the radical ∙SO₃^-, which strengthened the oxidation of HA. This study supports a simple and green method for efficiently cleaning water and wastewater rich in HA.
