Dual-Mode Porous Polymeric Films with Coral-like Hierarchical Structure for All-Day Radiative Cooling and Heating

Robust, stable cooling cellulose composite: Coupling nano-SiO2 and cellulose acetate in natural cellulose

Passive radiative cooling material of cellulose by coupling inorganic nanoparticles, have demonstrated competitive advantages in sustainably cooling buildings and constructions due to their voluminous availability, biodegradability, renewability, and natural origin. However, the weak stability of cellulose-inorganic nanoparticle materials when exposed to water or external forces remains a significant challenge that impedes their practical application. In this study, we proposed an easy-to-prepare, scalable, and robust cooling cellulose composite by coupling nano-SiO2 and cellulose acetate (CA) within cellulose fibers, using the mature pulping and paper process (filling of inorganic particles of nano-SiO2 and subsequent sizing of polymer of CA). More importantly, the CA molecules form the strong bonding with the cellulose molecules due to the high similarity of their molecular structure, which makes CA function as a "glue" to effectively fasten nano-SiO2 on the cellulose fibers. Correspondingly, our cellulose composite features desirable robustness and structural stability even undergoing mechanical beating and water-soaking treatments, demonstrating its excellent robustness and desirable adaptability to natural environments, such as wind and rain. As a result, despite undergoing water-soaking (for 40 days) or environmental exposure (for 90 days), the cooling cellulose composite still exhibits excellent solar reflectance (>95 %) and infrared thermal emissivity (>0.95 at 8-13 μm), enabling sub-ambient temperature (∼6.5 °C during daytime and ∼8 °C at nighttime) throughout the day. Our cooling cellulose composite demonstrates promising potential as an environmentally friendly, low-cost, and stable cooling material in our low-carbon society.

Study of Manipulative Pore Formation upon Polymeric Coating for the Endowment of the Switchable Property between Passive Daytime Radiative Cooling and Heating

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) emerges as a promising cooling strategy with an attractive feature of no energy and refrigerant consumption. In the current study, for the purpose of achieving cost-efficient fabrication of a PDRC polymeric material, a microporous polymeric coating is prepared by a novel "inverse emulsion"-"breath figure" (Ie-BF) method using water droplets as pore-formation template, and the porous morphologies of both the surface and bulk layer can be dynamically manipulated by tuning the emulsion composition as well as environmental conditions. Therefore, the solar reflectivity of the Ie-BF coating can be efficiently tuned within a rather wide range (21-91%) by facile modulation of porosity and thickness. The Ie-BF coating with a thickness of only 125 μm exhibits a high solar reflectance of 85.4% and a long-wave infrared emissivity of 96.3%, realizing a subambient radiative cooling of 6.7 °C and a cooling power of ∼76 W m-2 in the open air. Moreover, by employing the reversible feature of in situ pore formation and erasure combined with the additional attachment of a carbon black layer, the composite film could be easily switched between cooling and heating modes by solvent post-treatment. This research establishes a cost-efficient strategy with high flexibility in the structural manipulation concerning the construction of porous polymeric PDRC coating.

High thermal buffer and radiative cooling sodium alginate-based Janus aerogel enables multi-scenario thermal management for firefighting clothing

Firefighting clothing is an indispensable protective equipment for firefighters performing rescue activities under extreme heat and fire conditions. However, few bio-based thermal management materials that provide thermal comfort to firefighters in different operational scenarios have been reported. Herein, we present a novel strategy to prepare Janus-type aerogels based on sodium alginate biological macromolecules, consisting of a SiO2 nanoparticle layer and a microencapsulated paraffin@SiO2 phase-change composite layer. A passive radiative cooling and thermal energy storage was integrated into a functional dual-mode material system. Results show that Janus-type aerogel to cool down by 11.5 °C on a hot summer day. Meanwhile, paraffin@SiO2 has a high melting enthalpy of 127.5 J g-1 that effectively buffers temperature rise during the phase-change process. This Janus-type aerogel has ultra-low heat insulation (0.042 W/(m·K)), it can delay approximately 76.6 s to reach second-degree burn time for skin at a radiant heat exposure of 18.4 kW m-2. The work provides an innovative way to develop bio-based thermal management materials, which could enable multi-scenario thermal management for firefighting clothing.

Dynamical Janus-Like Behavior Excited by Passive Cold-Heat Modulation in the Earth-Sun/Universe System: Opportunities and Challenges

The utilization of solar-thermal energy and universal cold energy has led to many innovative designs that achieve effective temperature regulation in different application scenarios. Numerous studies on passive solar heating and radiation cooling often operate independently (or actively control the conversion) and lack a cohesive framework for deep connections. This work provides a concise overview of the recent breakthroughs in solar heating and radiation cooling by employing a mechanism material in the application model. Furthermore, the utilization of dynamic Janus-like behavior serves as a novel nexus to elucidate the relationship between solar heating and radiation cooling, allowing for the analysis of dynamic conversion strategies across various applications. Additionally, special discussions are provided to address specific requirements in diverse applications, such as optimizing light transmission for clothing or window glass. Finally, the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of solar heating and radiation cooling applications are underscored, which hold immense potential for substantial carbon emission reduction and environmental preservation. This work aims to ignite interest and lay a solid foundation for researchers to conduct in-depth studies on effective and self-adaptive regulation of cooling and heating.

Breathable Dual-Mode Leather-Like Nanotextile for Efficient Daytime Radiative Cooling and Heating

Incorporating passive radiative cooling and heating into personal thermal management has attracted tremendous attention. However, most current thermal management materials are usually monofunctional with a narrow temperature regulation range, and lack breathability, softness, and stretchability, resulting in a poor wearer experience and limited application scenarios. Herein, a breathable dual-mode leather-like nanotextile (LNT) with asymmetrical wrinkle photonic microstructures and Janus wettability for highly efficient personal thermal management is developed via a one-step electrospinning technique. The LNT is synthesized by self-bonding a hydrophilic cooling layer with welding fiber networks onto a hydrophobic photothermal layer, constructing bilayer wrinkle structures that offer remarkable optical properties, a wetting gradient, and unique textures. The resultant LNT exhibits efficient cooling capacity (22.0 °C) and heating capacity (22.1 °C) under sunlight, expanding the thermal management zone (28.3 °C wider than typical textiles). Additionally, it possesses favorable breathability, softness, stretchability, and sweat-wicking capability. Actual wearing tests demonstrate that the LNT can provide a comfortable microenvironment for the human body (1.6-8.0 °C cooler and 1.0-7.1 °C warmer than typical textiles) in changing weather conditions. Such a wearable dual-mode LNT presents great potential for personal thermal comfort and opens up new possibilities for all-weather smart clothing.

A photoluminescent hydrogen-bonded biomass aerogel for sustainable radiative cooling

Passive radiant cooling is a potentially sustainable thermal management strategy amid escalating global climate change. However, petrochemical-derived cooling materials often face efficiency challenges owing to the absorption of sunlight. We present an intrinsic photoluminescent biomass aerogel, which has a visible light reflectance exceeding 100%, that yields a large cooling effect. We discovered that DNA and gelatin aggregation into an ordered layered aerogel achieves a solar-weighted reflectance of 104.0% in visible light regions through fluorescence and phosphorescence. The cooling effect can reduce ambient temperatures by 16.0°C under high solar irradiance. In addition, the aerogel, efficiently produced at scale through water-welding, displays high reparability, recyclability, and biodegradability, completing an environmentally conscious life cycle. This biomass photoluminescence material is another tool for designing next-generation sustainable cooling materials.

Photoelectric dual-mode triggered phase change materials for all-weather personal thermal management and shape memory

To cope with the demand of more complex and variable applications, it is urgent to develop dual-mode triggered, breathable, and shape-memory wearable heaters for all-weather personal thermal management of composite phase change materials (PCMs). Herein, after high-temperature carbonization of ZnCo-MOF (metal-organic framework) nanosheet array grown in situ on flexible and breathable carbon cloth (CC) and subsequent encapsulation of polyethylene glycol (PEG), the as-prepared PEG/CC@Co/CNT (carbon nanotube) composite PCMs exhibited good breathability, mechanical strength (tensile strength of 9.15 MPa), thermal energy storage density (114.19 J/g), and shape memory due to the synergy of flexible CC skeleton and rigid PEG. More importantly, composite PCMs possessed excellent solar-thermal (93.7 %, 100 mW/cm2) and electro-thermals (94.5 %, 2.0 V) conversion and storage capacity, benefiting from the conjugation effect of high graphitized carbon/carbon heterostructure with fast electron/photon/phonon transmission and the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of Co nanoparticles. Therefore, the integration of solar heating and Joule heating into breathable composite PCMs can be accurately used for next-generation all-weather, all-season, dual-mode triggered personal thermal management, including indoor/outdoor, daytime/night, rainy/cloudy and other complex and changeable scenarios.

Lightweight Dual-Functional Segregated Nanocomposite Foams for Integrated Infrared Stealth and Absorption-Dominant Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Lightweight infrared stealth and absorption-dominant electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials are highly desirable in areas of aerospace, weapons, military and wearable electronics. Herein, lightweight and high-efficiency dual-functional segregated nanocomposite foams with microcellular structures are developed for integrated infrared stealth and absorption-dominant EMI shielding via the efficient and scalable supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) foaming combined with hydrogen bonding assembly and compression molding strategy. The obtained lightweight segregated nanocomposite foams exhibit superior infrared stealth performances benefitting from the synergistic effect of highly effective thermal insulation and low infrared emissivity, and outstanding absorption-dominant EMI shielding performances attributed to the synchronous construction of microcellular structures and segregated structures. Particularly, the segregated nanocomposite foams present a large radiation temperature reduction of 70.2 °C at the object temperature of 100 °C, and a significantly improved EM wave absorptivity/reflectivity (A/R) ratio of 2.15 at an ultralow Ti3C2Tx content of 1.7 vol%. Moreover, the segregated nanocomposite foams exhibit outstanding working reliability and stability upon dynamic compression cycles. The results demonstrate that the lightweight and high-efficiency dual-functional segregated nanocomposite foams have excellent potentials for infrared stealth and absorption-dominant EMI shielding applications in aerospace, weapons, military and wearable electronics.

Sustainable cellulose foams for all-weather high-performance radiative cooling and building insulation

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) as a zero-energy-consumption cooling technique offers rich opportunities in reducing global energy consumption and mitigating CO2 emissions. Developing high-performance PDRC coolers with practical applicability based on sustainable materials is of great significance, but remains a big challenge. Herein, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and esterified cellulose (EC) extracted from sawdust were used as raw materials to construct foams by using a dual-crosslinking assisted-unidirectional freeze-drying strategy followed by hydrophobic surface modification. The resultant PVA/EC (PEC) foams with ideal hierarchical macropore structure displayed various excellent features, such as low thermal conductivity (26.2 mW·m-1·K-1), high solar reflectance (95 %) and infrared emissivity (0.97), superhydrophobicity as well as high mechanical properties. The features allowed the PEC foams to be used as radiative coolers with excellent PDRC performance and thermal insulating materials. A maximum sub-ambient temperature drops of 10.2 °C could be achieved for optimal PEC foams. Building simulations indicated that PEC foams could save 55.8 % of the energy consumption for Xi'an. Our work would give inspiration for designing various types of PDRC coolers, including but certainly not limited to foams-based radiative coolers.

Thermal-Rectified Gradient Porous Polymeric Film for Solar-Thermal Regulatory Cooling

Solar-thermal regulation concerning thermal insulation and solar modulation is pivotal for cooling textiles and smart buildings. Nevertheless, a contradiction arises in balancing the demand to prevent external heat infiltration with the efficient dissipation of excess heat from enclosed spaces. Here, a concentration-gradient polymerization strategy is presented for fabricating a gradient porous polymeric film comprising interconnected polymeric microspheres. This method involves establishing an electric field-driven gradient distribution of charged crosslinkers in the precursor solution, followed by subsequent polymerization and freeze-drying processes. The resulting porous film exhibits a significant porosity gradient along its thickness, leading to exceptional unidirectional thermal insulation capabilities with a thermal rectification factor of 21%. The gradient porous film, with its thermal rectification properties, effectively reconciles the conflicting demands of diverse thermal conductivity for cooling unheated and spontaneously heated enclosed spaces. Consequently, the gradient porous film demonstrates remarkable enhancements in solar-thermal management, achieving temperature reductions of 3.0 and 4.1 °C for unheated and spontaneously heated enclosed spaces, respectively, compared to uniform porous films. The developed gradient-structured porous film thus holds promise for the development of thermal-rectified materials tailored to regulate solar-thermal conditions within enclosed environments.

Large-Scale, Mechanically Robust, Solvent-Resistant, and Antioxidant MXene-Based Composites for Reliable Long-Term Infrared Stealth

MXene-based thermal camouflage materials have gained increasing attention due to their low emissivity, however, the poor anti-oxidation restricts their potential applications under complex environments. Various modification methods and strategies, e.g., the addition of antioxidant molecules and fillers have been developed to overcome this, but the realization of long-term, reliable thermal camouflage using MXene network (coating) with excellent comprehensive performance remains a great challenge. Here, a MXene-based hybrid network comodified with hyaluronic acid (HA) and hyperbranched polysiloxane (HSi) molecules is designed and fabricated. Notably, the presence of appreciated HA molecules restricts the oxidation of MXene sheets without altering infrared stealth performance, superior to other water-soluble polymers; while the HSi molecules can act as efficient cross-linking agents to generate strong interactions between MXene sheets and HA molecules. The optimized MXene/HA/HSi composites exhibit excellent mechanical flexibility (folded into crane structure), good water/solvent resistance, and long-term stable thermal camouflage capability (with low infrared emissivity of ≈0.29). The long-term thermal camouflage reliability (≈8 months) under various outdoor weathers and the scalable coating capability of the MXene-coated textile enable them to disguise the IR signal of various targets in complex environments, indicating the great promise of achieved material for thermal camouflage, IR stealth, and counter surveillance.

Multifunctional Liquid Metal-Bridged Graphite Nanoplatelets/Aramid Nanofiber Film for Thermal Management

Miniaturization of modern micro-electronic devices urges the development of multi-functional thermal management materials. Traditional polymer composite-based thermal management materials are promising candidates, but they suffer from single functionality, high cost, and low fire-resistance. Herein, a multifunctional liquid metal (LM)-bridged graphite nanoplatelets (GNPs)/ aramid nanofibers (ANFs) film is fabricated via a facile vacuum-assisted self-assembly approach followed by compression. ANFs serve as interfacial binders to link LM and GNPs together via hydrogen bondings and π-π interactions, while LM bridges the adjacent layer of GNPs to endow a fast thermal transport by phonons and electrons. The resultant composite films exhibit a high bidirectional thermal conductivity (In-plane: 29.5 W m-1K-1 and through-plane: 5.3 W m-1K-1), offering a reliable and effective cooling. Moreover, the as-fabricated composite films exhibit superior flame-retardance (peak of heat release rate of 4000J g-1), outstanding Joule heating performance (200 °C at supplied voltage of 3.5 V), and excellent electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE of 62 dB). This work provides an efficient avenue to fabricate multifuntional thermal management materials for micro-electronic devices, battery thermal management, and artificial intelligence.

Polyethylene fibers containing directional microchannels for passive radiative cooling

Passive radiative cooling (PRC) that realizes thermal management without consuming any energy has attracted increasing attention. Unfortunately, polymer fibers with radiative cooling function fabricated via a facile, continuous, large-scale and eco-friendly method have been scarcely reported. Herein, polyethylene fibers containing directional microchannels (PFCDM) are facilely fabricated via melt extrusion and water leaching. Interestingly, fabric based on such hydrophobic PFCDM shows high sunlight reflectivity (93.6%), and mid-infrared emissivity (93.9%), endowing it with remarkable PRC performance. Compared with other reported examples, the as-prepared PFDCM fabric has the highest cooling power (i.e., 104.285 W m-2) and temperature drop (i.e., 27.71 °C). Furthermore, decent self-cleaning performance can keep the PFCDM fabric away from contamination and enable it to retain an excellent radiative cooling effect. The method proposed to fabricate PFCDM in this paper will widen the potential application of thermoplastic polyolefins in the field of radiative cooling.

A Polymer Nanocomposite with Strong Full-Spectrum Solar Absorption and Infrared Emission for All-Day Thermal Energy Management and Conversion

Realizing efficient energy utilization from the heat source of the sun and the cold source of outer space is of great significance for addressing the global energy and environmental crisis. Materials with ideal full-spectrum solar absorption and infrared emission are highly desirable for adapting to the continuous weather dynamic throughout the day, nonetheless, their development remains challenging. Here, a polymer nanocomposite with full-spectrum strong solar (280-2500 nm) absorption ranging from 88.8% to 94.8% with an average value of 93.2% and full-spectrum high infrared (8-13 µm) emission ranging from 81.3% to 90.0% with an average value of 84.2%, is reported by melt-processing polypropylene and uniformly dispersed low-loading MXene nanosheets (1.9 vol%). The nanocomposite can achieve daytime photothermal enhancement of ≈50 °C and nighttime radiative cooling of 8 °C. The temperature difference throughout the day ensures all-day uninterrupted thermoelectric generation, yielding a power density output of 1.5 W m-2 (daytime) and 7.9 mW m-2 (nighttime) in real outdoor environment without any additional energy consumption. This work provides an impressive polymer nanocomposite with ideal full-spectrum solar absorption and infrared emission for all-day uninterrupted thermal energy management and conversion.

A Janus Textile with Tunable Heating Modes toward Precise Personal Thermal Management in Cold Conditions

Passive heating textiles (PHTs) have drawn increasing attention due to the advantages of energy-conservation heating. However, the heating capabilities of current PHTs are typically static and non-tunable, presenting poor adaptation to dynamic winter. Herein, a novel Janus textile with tunable heating modes is developed by constructing a customized structure with asymmetric optical properties. This Janus textile is created by coating one side of a cotton fabric with silver nanowires (AgNWs) and then applying transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXene) to the other side. The MXene side exhibits high solar absorptivity and low mid-infrared emissivity, while the AgNWs side has moderate solar absorptivity and mid-infrared emissivity. This structure ensures that the solar and radiative heating temperatures of the MXene side are 16 °C and 1.7 °C higher than those of the AgNWs side. This distinction allows for on-demand, accurate adjustments in solar and radiative heating capabilities by flipping the textile according to ambient temperature. Furthermore, this innovative design also features desired electric heating, thermal camouflage, self-cleaning and antibacterial properties, electromagnetic interference shielding, durability, and wearability. The Janus textile enables precise thermoregulation of the human body to adapt to variable cold weather, making it essential for optimal personal thermal management and climate change mitigation.

Materials in Radiative Cooling Technologies

Radiative cooling (RC) is a carbon-neutral cooling technology that utilizes thermal radiation to dissipate heat from the Earth's surface to the cold outer space. Research in the field of RC has garnered increasing interest from both academia and industry due to its potential to drive sustainable economic and environmental benefits to human society by reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from conventional cooling systems. Materials innovation is the key to fully exploit the potential of RC. This review aims to elucidate the materials development with a focus on the design strategy including their intrinsic properties, structural formations, and performance improvement. The main types of RC materials, i.e., static-homogeneous, static-composite, dynamic, and multifunctional materials, are systematically overviewed. Future trends, possible challenges, and potential solutions are presented with perspectives in the concluding part, aiming to provide a roadmap for the future development of advanced RC materials.

Anti-Environmental Aging Passive Daytime Radiative Cooling

Passive daytime radiative cooling technology presents a sustainable solution for combating global warming and accompanying extreme weather, with great potential for diverse applications. The key characteristics of this cooling technology are the ability to reflect most sunlight and radiate heat through the atmospheric transparency window. However, the required high solar reflectance is easily affected by environmental aging, rendering the cooling ineffective. In recent years, significant advancements have been made in understanding the failure mechanisms, design strategies, and manufacturing technologies of daytime radiative cooling. Herein, a critical review on anti-environmental aging passive daytime radiative cooling with the goal of advancing their commercial applications is presented. It is first introduced the optical mechanisms and optimization principles of radiative cooling, which serve as a basis for further endowing environmental durability. Then the environmental aging conditions of passive daytime radiative cooling, mainly focusing on UV exposure, thermal aging, surface contamination and chemical corrosion are discussed. Furthermore, the developments of anti-environmental aging passive daytime radiative cooling materials, including design strategies, fabrication techniques, structures, and performances, are reviewed and classified for the first time. Last but not the least, the remaining open challenges and the insights are presented for the further promotion of the commercialization progress.

One-Step Method for Fabricating Janus Aramid Nanofiber/MXene Nanocomposite Films with Improved Joule Heating and Thermal Camouflage Properties

The integration of ultraflexible and mechanically robust films with electric heaters and camouflage technology provides a promising platform for the development of wearable devices, especially for aerospace and military applications. Herein, we present a facile and efficient one-step vacuum-assisted filtration method for fabricating Janus films based on aramid nanofibers (ANF) and Ti3C2Tx (MXene). The ANF/MXene nanocomposite film exhibits remarkable properties, including high conductivity (23809.5 S/m), excellent mechanical strength (102.54 MPa), and outstanding thermal stability (575 °C). Most notably, the Janus ANF/MXene composite film demonstrates superior Joule heating performance with a low driving voltage (1-5 V), high heating temperature (30-276 °C), and rapid response time (within 5 s). Additionally, the film exhibits effective thermal camouflage (72 °C for objects with temperatures above 163 °C) and excellent electromagnetic interference shielding properties (SSE/t = 32475.6 dB cm2/g). These results demonstrate that Janus ANF/MXene films possess a unique combination of thermal camouflage, Joule heating, and electromagnetic interference shielding properties, making them highly promising for wearable devices, high-performance electrical heating, infrared stealth, and security protection applications.

Advances in photothermal regulation strategies: from efficient solar heating to daytime passive cooling

Photothermal regulation concerning solar harvesting and repelling has recently attracted significant interest due to the fast-growing research focus in the areas of solar heating for evaporation, photocatalysis, motion, and electricity generation, as well as passive cooling for cooling textiles and smart buildings. The parallel development of photothermal regulation strategies through both material and system designs has further improved the overall solar utilization efficiency for heating/cooling. In this review, we will review the latest progress in photothermal regulation, including solar heating and passive cooling, and their manipulating strategies. The underlying mechanisms and criteria of highly efficient photothermal regulation in terms of optical absorption/reflection, thermal conversion, transfer, and emission properties corresponding to the extensive catalog of nanostructured materials are discussed. The rational material and structural designs with spectral selectivity for improving the photothermal regulation performance are then highlighted. We finally present the recent significant developments of applications of photothermal regulation in clean energy and environmental areas and give a brief perspective on the current challenges and future development of controlled solar energy utilization.

Recent advances in dynamic dual mode systems for daytime radiative cooling and solar heating

Thermal management, including heating and cooling, plays an important role in human productive activities and daily life. Nevertheless, in the actual environment, almost all the ambient scenarios come with the challenge that the objects are located in a quite dynamic and variable environment, which includes fluctuations in aspects such as space, time, sunlight, season, and temperature. It is imperative to develop low-energy or even zero-energy thermal-management technologies with renewable and clean energy. In this review, we summarised the latest technological advances and the prospects in this burgeoning field. First, we present the fundamental principles of the daytime passive radiative cooling (PDRC) thermal management device. Next, In the domain of dual-mode systems, they are classified into various types based on the diverse mechanisms of transitioning between cooling and heating states, including electrical responsive, mechanical responsive, temperature responsive, and solution responsive. Furthermore, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the principles and design methodologies associated with these categories, followed by a comparative assessment of their performance in radiative cooling and solar heating applications. Finally, this review presents the challenges and opportunities of dynamic dual mode thermal management, while also identifying future directions.

A smart thermal-gated bilayer membrane for temperature-adaptive radiative cooling and solar heating

Due to the huge energy consumption of traditional cooling- and heating-based electricity, passive radiative cooling and solar heating with a minimum carbon footprint using the outer space and Sun as natural thermodynamic resources have attracted much attention. However, most passive devices are static and monofunctional, and cannot meet the practical requirements of dynamic cooling and heating under various conditions. Here, we demonstrate a smart thermal-gated (STG) bilayer membrane that enables fully automatic and temperature-adaptive radiative cooling and solar heating. Specifically, this device can switch from reflective to absorptive (white to black) in the solar wavelength with the reduction in optical scattering upon ambient temperature, corresponding to a sunlight reflectivity change from 0.962 to 0.059 when the temperature drops below ∼30 °C, whereas its mid-infrared emissivity remains at ∼0.95. Consequently, this STG membrane achieves a temperature of ∼5 °C below ambient (a key signature of radiative cooling) under direct sunlight (peak solar irradiance >900 W m-2) in summer and a solar heating power of ∼550 W m-2 in winter. Theoretical analysis reveals the substantial advantage of this switchable cooling/heating device in potential energy saving compared with cooling-only and heating-only strategies when widely used in different climates. It is expected that this work will pave a new pathway for designing temperature-adaptive devices with zero energy consumption and provide an innovative way to achieve sustainable energy.

A Hierarchically Nanofibrous Self-Cleaning Textile for Efficient Personal Thermal Management in Severe Hot and Cold Environments

Climate change has recently caused more and more severe temperatures, inducing a growing demand for personal thermal management at outdoors. However, designing textiles that can achieve personal thermoregulation without energy consumption in severely hot and cold environments remains a huge challenge. Herein, a hierarchically nanofibrous (HNF) textile with improved thermal insulation and radiative thermal management functions is fabricated for efficient personal thermal management in severe temperatures. The textile consists of a radiative cooling layer, an intermediate thermal insulation layer, and a radiative heating layer, wherein the porous lignocellulose aerogel membrane (LCAM) as intermediate layer has low thermal conductivity (0.0366 W·m-1·K-1), ensuring less heat loss in cold weather and blocking external heat in hot weather. The introduction of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) increases the thermal emissivity (90.4%) of the radiative cooling layer in the atmospheric window and also endows it with a perfect self-cleaning performance. Solar absorptivity (80.1%) of the radiative heating layer is dramatically increased by adding only 0.05 wt% of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into polyacrylonitrile. An outdoor test demonstrates that the HNF textile can achieve a temperature drop of 7.2 °C compared with white cotton in a hot environment and can be as high as 12.2 °C warmer than black cotton in a cold environment. In addition, the HNF textile possesses excellent moisture permeability, breathability, and directional perspiration performances, making it promising for personal thermal management in severely hot and cold environments.

Functional Materials and Innovative Strategies for Wearable Thermal Management Applications

This article systematically reviews the thermal management wearables with a specific emphasis on materials and strategies to regulate the human body temperature. Thermal management wearables are subdivided into the active and passive thermal managing methods. The strength and weakness of each thermal regulatory wearables are discussed in details from the view point of practical usage in real-life.

Abstract

Thermal management is essential in our body as it affects various bodily functions, ranging from thermal discomfort to serious organ failures, as an example of the worst-case scenario. There have been extensive studies about wearable materials and devices that augment thermoregulatory functionalities in our body, employing diverse materials and systematic approaches to attaining thermal homeostasis. This paper reviews the recent progress of functional materials and devices that contribute to thermoregulatory wearables, particularly emphasizing the strategic methodology to regulate body temperature. There exist several methods to promote personal thermal management in a wearable form. For instance, we can impede heat transfer using a thermally insulating material with extremely low thermal conductivity or directly cool and heat the skin surface. Thus, we classify many studies into two branches, passive and active thermal management modes, which are further subdivided into specific strategies. Apart from discussing the strategies and their mechanisms, we also identify the weaknesses of each strategy and scrutinize its potential direction that studies should follow to make substantial contributions to future thermal regulatory wearable industries.

Mechanically Switchable Multifunctional Device for Regulating Passive Radiative Cooling and Solar Heating

Energy consumption during cooling and heating poses a great threat to the development of society. Thermal regulation, as switchable cooling and heating in a single platform, is therefore urgently demanded. Herein, a switchable multifunctional device integrating heating, cooling, and latent energy storage was proposed for temperature regulation and window energy saving for buildings. A radiative cooling (RC) emitter, a phase-change (PC) membrane, and a solar-heating (SH) film were connected layer by layer to form a sandwich structure. The RC emitter exhibited selective infrared emission (emissivity in the atmospheric window: 0.81, emissivity outside the atmospheric window: 0.39) and a high solar reflectance (0.92). Meanwhile, the SH film had a high solar absorptivity (0.90). More importantly, both the RC emitter and the SH film displayed excellent wear resistance and UV resistance. The PC layer can control the temperature at a steady state under dynamic weather conditions, which could be verified by indoor and outdoor measurements. The thermal regulation performance of the multifunctional device was also verified by outdoor measurements. The temperature difference between the RC and SH models of the multifunctional device could reach up to 25 °C. The as-constructed switchable multifunctional device is a promising candidate for alleviating the cooling and heating energy consumption and realizing energy saving for windows.
