Fabrication of Centimeter-Scale Plasmonic Nanoparticle Arrays with Ultranarrow Surface Lattice Resonances

Tailoring Plasmonic Fields with Shape-Controlled Single-Crystal Gold Metasurfaces

Geometry and crystallinity play a critical role in the wavelength-dependent optical responses and plasmonic local near-field distributions of metallic nanostructures. Nevertheless, the ability to tailor the shape and position of crystalline metal surface nanostructures has remained a challenge that limits control of their enhanced local fields and represents a barrier to harnessing their individual and collective responses. Here, we describe a solution deposition method in the presence of anionic additives, which yields shape-controlled, single-crystal plasmonic gold nanostructures on Ag(100) and Au(100) substrates. Use of SO42- ions yields smooth Au(111)-faceted square pyramids with large plasmonic Raman enhancements. Halide additives produce textured hillocks comprising edge- and screw-type dislocations (Cl-), or platelets with large-area Au(100) terraces and (110) step edges (Br-), while SO42- and Br- additive combinations provide Au(110)-faceted square pyramids. With lithographic patterning, this chemistry yields metal deposition with precise geometry and location control to provide single-crystal, plasmonic gold metasurfaces with tailored optical response. The appropriately designed metasurfaces can then generate large Raman scattering enhancements, far greater than high density gold square pyramids with random surface disposition. Shape-controlled single-crystal plasmonic metasurfaces will thus offer opportunities to tune the characteristics of nanostructures, providing enhanced optical, photocatalytic, and sensory response.

Self-Confined Dewetting Mechanism in Wafer-Scale Patterning of Gold Nanoparticle Arrays with Strong Surface Lattice Resonance for Plasmonic Sensing

A self-confined solid-state dewetting mechanism is reported that can fundamentally reduce the use of sophisticated nanofabrication techniques, enabling efficient wafer-scale patterning of non-closely packed (ncp) gold nanoparticle arrays. When combined with a soft lithography process, this approach can address the reproducibility challenges associated with colloidal crystal self-assembly, allowing for the batch fabrication of ncp gold arrays with consistent ordering and even optical properties. The resulting dewetted ncp gold nanoparticle arrays exhibit strong surface lattice resonance properties when excited in inhomogeneous environments under normal white-light incidence. With these SLR properties, the sensitive plasmonic sensing of molecular interactions is achieved using a simple transmission setup. This study will advance the development of miniaturized and portable devices.

High Q-Factor Plasmonic Surface Lattice Resonances in Colloidal Nanoparticle Arrays

Surface lattice resonances (SLRs) sustained by ordered metal arrays are characterized by their narrow spectral features, remarkable quality factors, and the ability to tune their spectral properties based on the periodicity of the array. However, the majority of these structures are fabricated using classical lithographic processes or require postannealing steps at high temperatures to enhance the quality of the metal. These limitations hinder the widespread utilization of these periodic metal arrays in various applications. In this work, we use the scalable technique of template-assisted assembly of metal colloids to produce plasmonic supercrystals over centimeter areas capable of sustaining SLRs with high Q factors reaching up to 270. Our approach obviates the need for any postprocessing, offering a streamlined and efficient fabrication route. Furthermore, our method enables extensive tunability across the entire visible and near-infrared spectral ranges, empowering the design of tailored plasmonic resonant structures for a wide range of applications.

Photo-Induced Self-assembly of Copolymer-Capped Nanoparticles into Colloidal Molecules

Colloidal molecules (CMs) are precisely defined assemblies of nanoparticles (NPs) that mimic the structure of real molecules, but externally programming the precise self-assembly of CMs is still challenging. In this work, we show that the photo-induced self-assembly of complementary copolymer-capped binary NPs can be precisely controlled to form clustered ABx or linear (AB)y CMs at high yield (x is the coordination number of NP-Bs, and y is the repeating unit number of AB clusters). Under UV light irradiation, photolabile p-methoxyphenacyl groups of copolymers on NP-A*s are converted to carboxyl groups (NP-A), which react with tertiary amines of copolymers on NP-B to trigger the directional NP bonding. The x value of ABx can be precisely controlled between 1 and 3 by varying the irradiation duration and hence the amount of carboxyl groups generated on NP-As. Moreover, when NP-A* and NP-B are irradiated after mixing, the assembly process generates AB clusters or linear (AB)y structures with alternating sequence of the binary NPs. This assembly approach offers a simple yet non-invasive way to externally regulate the formation of various CMs on demand without the need of redesigning the surface chemistry of NPs for use in drug delivery, diagnostics, optoelectronics, and plasmonic devices.

Monolayer supertubes of Carbon-Armored platinum nanocrystals enabling robust oxygen reduction electrocatalysis

Self-assembled superstructures composed of nanocrystals (NCs) have shown immense potential for enhancing the performance in electrocatalytic applications. However, there has been limited research on the self-assembly of platinum (Pt) into low-dimensional superstructures as efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this study, we designed a unique tubular superstructure composed of monolayer or sub-monolayer carbon-armored platinum nanocrystals (Pt NCs) using a template-assisted epitaxial assembly approach. The organic ligands on the surface of Pt NCs were in situ carbonized, resulting in few-layer graphitic carbon shells that encapsulate Pt NCs. Due to their monolayer assembly and tubular geometry, the Pt utilization of the supertubes was 1.5 times higher than that of conventional carbon-supported Pt NCs. As a result, such Pt supertubes exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic performance for the ORR in acidic media, with a high half-wave potential of 0.918 V and a high mass activity of 181 A g^-1_Pt at 0.9 V, which are comparable to commercial carbon-supported Pt (Pt/C) catalysts. Furthermore, the Pt supertubes demonstrate robust catalytic stability, as confirmed by long-term accelerated durability tests and identical-location transmission electron microscopy. This study presents a new approach to designing Pt superstructures for highly efficient and stable electrocatalysis.
