Mo2TiC2 MXene-Supported Ru Clusters for Efficient Photothermal Reverse Water-Gas Shift

Hierarchical Carbon Nanocages as Superior Supports for Photothermal CO2 Catalysis

The exploitation of hierarchical carbon nanocages with superior light-to-heat conversion efficiency, together with their distinct structural, morphological, and electronic properties, in photothermal applications could provide effective solutions to long-standing challenges in diverse areas. Here, we demonstrate the discovery of pristine and nitrogen-doped hierarchical carbon nanocages as superior supports for highly loaded, small-sized Ru particles toward enhanced photothermal CO2 catalysis. A record CO production rate of 3.1 mol·gRu-1·h-1 with above 90% selectivity in flow reactors was reached for hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon-nanocage-supported Ru clusters under 2.4 W·cm-2 illumination without external heating. Detailed studies reveal that the enhanced performance originates from the strong broadband sunlight absorption and efficient light-to-heat conversion of nanocage supports as well as the excellent intrinsic catalytic reactivity of sub-2 nm Ru particles. Our study reveals the great potential of hierarchical carbon nanocages in photothermal catalysis to reduce the fossil fuel consumption of various industrial chemical processes and stimulates interest in their exploitation for other demanding photothermal applications.

A feasible interlayer strategy for simultaneous light and heat management in photothermal catalysis

Photothermal conversion represents one crucial approach for solar energy harvesting and its exploitation as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels; however, an efficient, cost-effective, and generalized approach to enhance the photothermal conversion processes is still missing. Herein, we develop a feasible and efficient photothermal conversion strategy that achieves simultaneous light and heat management using supported metal clusters and WSe2 interlayer toward enhanced CO2 hydrogenation photothermal catalysis. The interlayer can simultaneously reduce heat loss in the catalytic layer and improve light absorption, leading to an 8-fold higher CO2 conversion rate than the controls. The optical and thermal performance of WSe2 interlayered catalysts on different substrates was quantified using Raman spectroscopy. This work demonstrates a feasible and generalized approach for effective light and heat management in solar harvesting. It also provides important design guidelines for efficient photothermal converters that facilitate the remediation of the energy and environmental crises faced by humans.

Advances in MXene surface functionalization modification strategies for CO2 reduction

MXenes, 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides, show great potential in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (ECO2RR) applications owing to their tunable structure, abundant surface functional groups, large specific surface area and remarkable conductivity. However, the ECO2RR has a complex pathway involving various reaction intermediates. The reaction process yields various products alongside a competitive electrolytic water-splitting reaction. These factors limit the application of MXenes in ECO2RRs. Therefore, this review begins by examining the functionalized modification of MXenes to enhance their catalytic activity and stability via the regulation of interactions between carriers and the catalytic centre. The review firstly covers the synthesis methods and characterisation techniques for functionalized MXenes reported in recent years. Secondly, it presents the methods applied for the functionalized modification of carriers through surface loading of single atoms, clusters, and nanoparticles and construction of composites. These methods regulate the stability, active sites, and metal-carrier electronic interactions. Finally, the article discusses the challenges, opportunities, pressing issues, and future prospects related to MXene-based electrocatalysts.

Interfacial Design of Ti3C2Tx MXene/Graphene Heterostructures Boosted Ru Nanoclusters with High Activity Toward Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

The development of a cost-competitive and efficient electrocatalyst is both attractive and challenging for hydrogen production by hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a facile glycol reduction method to construct Ru nanoclusters coupled with hierarchical exfoliated-MXene/reduced graphene oxide architectures (Ru-E-MXene/rGA) is reported. The hierarchical structure, formed by the self-assembly of graphene oxides, can effectively prohibit the self-stacking of MXene nanosheets. Meanwhile, the formation of the MXene/rGA interface can strongly trap the Ru3+ ions, resulting in the uniform distribution of Ru nanoclusters within Ru-E-MXene/rGA. The boosted catalytic activity and underlying catalytic mechanism during the HER process are proved by density functional theory. Ru-E-MXene/rGA exhibits overpotentials of 42 and 62 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline and acidic electrolytes, respectively. The small Tafel slope and charge transfer resistance (Rct) values elucidate its fast dynamic behavior. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) curves and chronoamperometry test confirm the high stability of Ru-E-MXene/rGA. These results demonstrate that coupling Ru nanoclusters with the MXene/rGA heterostructure represents an efficient strategy for constructing MXene-based catalysts with enhanced HER activity.

A Ni-O-Ag photothermal catalyst enables 103-m2 artificial photosynthesis with >17% solar-to-chemical energy conversion efficiency

The scalable artificial photosynthesis composed of photovoltaic electrolysis and photothermal catalysis is limited by inefficient photothermal CO2 hydrogenation under weak sunlight irradiation. Herein, NiO nanosheets supported with Ag single atoms [two-dimensional (2D) Ni1Ag0.02O1] are synthesized for photothermal CO2 hydrogenation to achieve 1065 mmol g-1 hour-1 of CO production rate under 1-sun irradiation. This performance is attributed to the coupling effect of Ag-O-Ni sites to enhance the hydrogenation of CO2 and weaken the CO adsorption, resulting in 1434 mmol g-1 hour-1 of CO yield at 300°C. Furthermore, we integrate the 2D Ni1Ag0.02O1-supported photothermal reverse water-gas shift reaction with commercial photovoltaic electrolytic water splitting to construct a 103-m2 scale artificial photosynthesis system (CO2 + H2O → CO + H2 + O2), which achieves more than 22 m3/day of green syngas with an adjustable H2/CO ratio (0.4-3) and a photochemical energy conversion efficiency of >17%. This research charts a promising course for designing practical, natural sunlight-driven artificial photosynthesis systems.

Non-Photochemical Origin of Selectivity Difference between Light and Dark Catalytic Conditions

The interest in introducing light into heterogeneous catalysis is driven not only by the urgent need of replacing fossil energy but also by the promise of controlling product selectivity by light. The product selectivity differences observed in recent studies between light and dark reactions are often attributed to photochemical effects. Here, we report the discovery of a non-photochemical origin of selectivity difference, at essentially the same CO2 conversion rate, between photothermal and thermal CO2 hydrogenation reactions over a Ru/TiO2-x catalyst. While the presence of the photochemical effect from ultraviolet light is confirmed, it merely enhances the catalytic activity. Systematic investigation reveals that the gradual formation of an adsorbate-mediated strong metal-support interaction under catalytic conditions is responsible for the variation in the catalytic selectivity. We demonstrate that differences in product selectivity under light/dark reactions do not necessarily originate from photochemical effects. Our study refines the basis for determining photochemical effects and highlights the importance of excluding non-photochemical effects in mechanistic studies of light-controlled product selectivity.

Supra-Photothermal CO2 Methanation over Greenhouse-Like Plasmonic Superstructures of Ultrasmall Cobalt Nanoparticles

Improving the solar-to-thermal energy conversion efficiency of photothermal nanomaterials at no expense of other physicochemical properties, e.g., the catalytic reactivity of metal nanoparticles, is highly desired for diverse applications but remains a big challenge. Herein, a synergistic strategy is developed for enhanced photothermal conversion by a greenhouse-like plasmonic superstructure of 4 nm cobalt nanoparticles while maintaining their intrinsic catalytic reactivity. The silica shell plays a key role in retaining the plasmonic superstructures for efficient use of the full solar spectrum, and reducing the heat loss of cobalt nanoparticles via the nano-greenhouse effect. The optimized plasmonic superstructure catalyst exhibits supra-photothermal CO2 methanation performance with a record-high rate of 2.3 mol gCo -1 h-1 , close to 100% CH4 selectivity, and desirable catalytic stability. This work reveals the great potential of nanoscale greenhouse effect in enhancing photothermal conversions through the combination with conventional promoting strategies, shedding light on the design of efficient photothermal nanomaterials for demanding applications.

A nonmetallic plasmonic catalyst for photothermal CO2 flow conversion with high activity, selectivity and durability

The meticulous design of active sites and light absorbers holds the key to the development of high-performance photothermal catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation. Here, we report a nonmetallic plasmonic catalyst of Mo2N/MoO2-x nanosheets by integrating a localized surface plasmon resonance effect with two distinct types of active sites for CO2 hydrogenation. Leveraging the synergism of dual active sites, H2 and CO2 molecules can be simultaneously adsorbed and activated on N atom and O vacancy, respectively. Meanwhile, the plasmonic effect of this noble-metal-free catalyst signifies its promising ability to convert photon energy into localized heat. Consequently, Mo2N/MoO2-x nanosheets exhibit remarkable photothermal catalytic performance in reverse water-gas shift reaction. Under continuous full-spectrum light irradiation (3 W·cm-2) for a duration of 168 h, the nanosheets achieve a CO yield rate of 355 mmol·gcat-1·h-1 in a flow reactor with a selectivity exceeding 99%. This work offers valuable insights into the precise design of noble-metal-free active sites and the development of plasmonic catalysts for reducing carbon footprints.

Chemically exfoliated boron nanosheets for efficient oxidative dehydrogenation of propane

Oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) is a promising technique for producing propene due to its low operative temperature and coke-resistant feature. Recently, boron-based catalysts have been widely investigated for ODHP owing to their brilliant performance. Herein, we report that boron in the form of nanosheets can be prepared feasibly by exfoliating layered MgB2 with hydrochloric acid, and can efficiently and stably catalyze ODHP. At 530 °C, the catalyst exhibits propene and ethene selectivities as high as 63.5% and 18.4%, respectively, at a 40% propane conversion. The olefin productivity reaches 2.48 golefin gcat-1 h-1, superior to the commercial h-BN and other reported boron-based catalysts. Even after testing for 100 h at 530 °C, the catalyst still maintains excellent stability. This work expands the effective boron-based catalyst family for ODHP and demonstrates the great potential of the new type of 2D material-boron nanosheet for energy and catalytic applications.

Modulation of the Structure-function Relationship of the "nano-greenhouse effect" towards Optimized Supra-photothermal Catalysis

Photothermal catalytic CO2 hydrogenation holds great promise for relieving the global environment and energy crises. The "nano-greenhouse effect" has been recognized as a crucial strategy for improving the heat management capabilities of a photothermal catalyst by ameliorating the convective and radiative heat losses. Yet it remains unclear to what degree the respective heat transfer and mass transport efficiencies depend on the specific structures. Herein, the structure-function relationship of the "nano-greenhouse effect" was investigated and optimized in a prototypical Ni@SiO2 core-shell catalyst towards photothermal CO2 catalysis. Experimental and theoretical results indicate that modulation of the thickness and porosity of the SiO2 nanoshell leads to variations in both heat preservation and mass transport properties. This work deepens the understandings on the contributing factor of the "nano-greenhouse effect" towards enhanced photothermal conversion. It also provides insights on the design principles of an ideal photothermal catalyst in balancing heat management and mass transport processes.

Recent Advances in the Reverse Water-Gas Conversion Reaction

The increase in carbon dioxide emissions has significantly impacted human society and the global environment. As carbon dioxide is the most abundant and cheap C1 resource, the conversion and utilization of carbon dioxide have received extensive attention from researchers. Among the many carbon dioxide conversion and utilization methods, the reverse water-gas conversion (RWGS) reaction is considered one of the most effective. This review discusses the research progress made in RWGS with various heterogeneous metal catalyst types, covering topics such as catalyst performance, thermodynamic analysis, kinetics and reaction mechanisms, and catalyst design and preparation, and suggests future research on RWGS heterogeneous catalysts.

Carbon dioxide conversion via reverse water-gas shift reaction: Reactor design

The reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction converts carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen (H2) to syngas, which is used to produce various high-added-value chemicals. This process has attracted great interest from researchers as a way of mitigating the potential environmental impacts of this greenhouse gas, with emphasis on global warming. This work aims to model and simulate an industrial catalytic reactor using kinetic data for the RWGS reaction. The simulation was carried out in Aspen Plus® v10. The thermodynamic analysis showed that the appropriate conditions for the reaction are feed molar ratio (H2/CO2) of 0.8:1, 750 °C, and 20 bar. The RWGS process proceeds in a multi-tubular fixed bed reactor with 36.26% CO2 conversion and 96.41% CO selectivity, at residence times in the order of 2.7 s. These results are at near-equilibrium CO2 conversion with higher CO selectivity.

Flexible MXene/Nanocellulose Composite Aerogel Film with Cellular Structure for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and Photothermal Conversion

With the rapid development of wearable devices and integrated systems, protection against electromagnetic waves is an issue. For solving the problems of poor flexibility and a tendency to corrode traditional electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials, two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial MXene was employed to manufacture next-generation EMI shielding materials. Vacuum-assisted filtration combined with the liquid nitrogen prefreezing strategy was adopted to prepare flexible MXene/cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) composite aerogel film with unique cellular structure. Here, CNFs were employed as the reinforcement, and such a cellular structure design can effectively improve the shielding effectiveness (SE). In particular, the composite shows an outstanding EMI SE of 54 dB. Furthermore, the MXene/CNFs composite aerogel film exhibited prominent and steady photothermal conversion ability, which could obtain the maximum equilibrium temperature of 89.4 °C under an 808 nm NIR laser. Thus, our flexible composite aerogel film with appealing cellular construction holds great promise for wearable EMI shielding materials and heating applications in a cold and complex practical environment.

Impact of Sintering Temperature Variation on Porous Structure of Mo2TiAlC2 Ceramics

Mo, TiH2, Al and graphite elemental powders were used as starting materials for the activation reaction sintering process, which was employed to fabricate porous Mo2TiAlC2. The alteration of phase constitution, volume expansion, porosity, pore size and surface morphology of porous Mo2TiAlC2 with sintering temperatures ranging from 700 °C to 1500 °C were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and pore size tester. Both the pore formation mechanism and activation reaction process at each temperature stage were investigated. The experimental results illustrate that the sintered discs of porous Mo2TiAlC2 exhibit obvious volume expansion and pore structure change during the sintering process. Before 1300 °C, the volume expansion rate and porosity increase with the increment of temperature. However, with the sintering temperature above 1300 °C, the volume expansion rate and porosity decrease. At the final sintering temperature of 1500 °C, porous Mo2TiAlC2 with a volume expansion rate of 35.74%, overall porosity of 47.1%, and uniform pore structure was synthesized. The pore-forming mechanism of porous Mo2TiAlC2 is discussed, and the evolution of pressed pores, the removal of molding agents, the decomposition of TiH2, and the Kirkendall effect caused by different diffusion rates of elements in the diffusion reaction are all accountable for the formation of pores.

Promises of Plasmonic Antenna-Reactor Systems in Gas-Phase CO2 Photocatalysis

Sunlight-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction provides intriguing opportunities for addressing the energy and environmental crises faced by humans. The rational combination of plasmonic antennas and active transition metal-based catalysts, known as "antenna-reactor" (AR) nanostructures, allows the simultaneous optimization of optical and catalytic performances of photocatalysts, and thus holds great promise for CO2 photocatalysis. Such design combines the favorable absorption, radiative, and photochemical properties of the plasmonic components with the great catalytic potentials and conductivities of the reactor components. In this review, recent developments of photocatalysts based on plasmonic AR systems for various gas-phase CO2 reduction reactions with emphasis on the electronic structure of plasmonic and catalytic metals, plasmon-driven catalytic pathways, and the role of AR complex in photocatalytic processes are summarized. Perspectives in terms of challenges and future research in this area are also highlighted.
