Multifunctional Hierarchical Metamaterial for Thermal Insulation and Electromagnetic Interference Shielding at Elevated Temperatures

Building-Envelope-Inspired, Thermomechanically Robust All-Fiber Ceramic Meta-Aerogel for Temperature-Controlled Dominant Infrared Camouflage

The unsatisfactory properties of ceramic aerogels when subjected to thermal shock, such as strength degradation and structural collapse, render them unsuitable for use at large thermal gradients or prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures. Here, a building-envelope-inspired design for fabricating a thermomechanically robust all-fiber ceramic meta-aerogel with interlocked fibrous interfaces and an interwoven cellular structure in the orthogonal directions is presented, which is achieved through a two-stage physical and chemical process. Inspired by the reinforced concrete building envelope, a solid foundation composed of fibrous frames is constructed and enhanced through supramolecular in situ self-assembly to achieve high compressibility, retaining over 90% of maximum stress under a considerable compressive strain of 50% for 10 000 cycles, and showing temperature-invariance when compressed at 60% strain within the range of -100 to 500 °C. As a result of its distinct response to oscillation tolerance coupled with elastic recovery, the all-fiber ceramic meta-aerogel exhibits exceptional suitability for thermal shock resistance and infrared camouflage performance in cold (-196 °C) and hot (1300 °C) fields. This study provides an opportunity for developing ceramic aerogels for effective thermal management under extreme conditions.

Tailoring Interfaces of All-Carbon Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Materials for Boosting Comprehensive Performance

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with lightweight, high shielding effectiveness, excellent chemical stability, especially minimized secondary electromagnetic pollution, are urgently desired for integrated electronic systems operating in harsh working environments. Here in this study, by systematically engineering and matching the interfacial properties of carbon-based membrane materials, i.e., graphite paper, whisker carbon nanotube paper (WCNT paper), carbon nanotube film (CNT film), bucky paper (BP), and carbon cloth (CC) with three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon nanotube sponge (CNTS), we successfully constructed a series of multifunctional all-carbon EMI shielding materials, which exhibit excellent average shielding effectiveness of over 90 dB with a thickness of about 1 mm and dramatically minimized secondary electromagnetic reflection. Moreover, benefiting from the all-carbon nature and engineered interfaces, our CMC materials also exhibit excellent photothermal and Joule heating performances. These results not only provide guidance for designing advanced multifunctional all-carbon EMI shielding materials but also shed light on the hidden mechanism between interfaces and performances of composite materials.

Controllable proton-reservoir ordered gel towards reversible switching and reliable electromagnetic interference shielding

Smart and dynamic electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials possess a remarkable capacity to modify their EMI shielding abilities, rendering them invaluable in various civil and military applications. However, the present response mechanism of switch-type EMI shielding materials is slightly restricted, as it primarily depends on continuous pressure induction, thereby resulting in concerns regarding their durability and reliability. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrate a novel method for achieving solvent-responsive, reversible switching, and robust EMI shielding capabilities using a controlled proton-reservoir ordered gel. The gel contains polyaniline (PANI) and sodium alginate (SA). Initially, SA acts as a proton reservoir for PANI in an aqueous system, enhancing the doping level of PANI and improving its electrical conductivity. Additionally, PANI and SA chains respond to diverse polar solvents, such as water, acetonitrile, ethanol, n-hexane, and air, inducing distinct conformations that affect the degree of PANI conjugation and electron migration along the chains. This process is reversible and non-destructive to the polymer chain, ensuring the effective and uncompromised performance of the EMI shielding switch. We can achieve precise and reversible tuning (on/off) of EMI shielding with different effectiveness levels by manipulating the solvents within the framework. This work opens a new solvent-stimuli avenue for the development of EMI shielding materials with reliable and intelligent on/off switching capabilities.

Carbonized Syndiotactic Polystyrene/Carbon Nanotube/MXene Hybrid Aerogels with Egg-Box Structure: A Platform for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and Solar Thermal Energy Management

Functional materials for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding are a consistently hot topic in the booming communication engineering, proceeding the development that tends to the multifunctional EMI shielding materials. Herein, a series of carbonized syndiotactic polystyrene/carbon nanotube/MXene (CsPS/CNT/MXene) hybrid aerogels were fabricated for EMI shielding and solar thermal energy conversion purposes. To fabricate the hybrid aerogels, a porous CNT/MXene framework was initially prepared using freeze-casting. Subsequently, sPS was infused into the porous structure, followed by hyper-cross-linking and carbonization of sPS under an inert atmosphere. The resulting aerogels exhibited a distinctive egg-box structure, comprising numerous nanofibrous carbon microspheres embedded within the lamellar framework. The mass ratio between CNT and MXene was regulated to identify an optimum aerogel, that is, the CCM-4-6, which exhibited impressive properties including Young's compression modulus of 0.67 MPa, a water contact angle of 137.6 ± 4.1°, a specific surface area of 110 m2 g-1, an electrical conductivity of 43.0 S m-1, and an EMI SE value of 40 dB. Meanwhile, phase-change composites were fabricated through encapsulating paraffin wax within the hybrid aerogels. For the CCM-4-6 aerogel, a noteworthy encapsulation ratio was achieved at about 76.7%, along with remarkable latent heat, good thermal reliability, and commendable solar thermal energy conversion capacity. This study presents a facile route to prepare multifunctional EMI shielding materials.
