Stimuli-Responsive Electrochemical Energy Storage Devices

Electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices have been swiftly developed in recent years. Stimuli-responsive EES devices that respond to different external stimuli are considered the most advanced EES devices. The stimuli-responsive EES devices enhanced the performance and applications of the EES devices. The capability of the EES devices to respond to the various external stimuli due to produced advanced EES devices that distinguished the best performance and interactions in different situations. The stimuli-responsive EES devices have responsive behavior to different external stimuli including chemical compounds, electricity, photons, mechanical tensions, and temperature. All of these advanced responsiveness behaviors have originated from the functionality and specific structure of the EES devices. The multi-responsive EES devices have been recognized as the next generation of stimuli-responsive EES devices. There are two main steps in developing stimuli-responsive EES devices in the future. The first step is the combination of the economical, environmental, electrochemical, and multi-responsiveness priorities in an EES device. The second step is obtaining some advanced properties such as biocompatibility, flexibility, stretchability, transparency, and wearability in novel stimuli-responsive EES devices. Future studies on stimuli-responsive EES devices will be allocated to merging these significant two steps to improve the performance of the stimuli-responsive EES devices to challenge complicated situations.

Photoluminescent polymer micelles with thermo-/pH-/metal responsibility and their features in selective optical sensing of Pd(ii) cations

Photoluminescent polymers can be divided into two types of structures: one is the well-known conventional π-conjugated rigid chain polymers bearing π-conjugated chromophores in their side chains, and the other is the common flexible polymers without π-conjugated chromophores in their main or side chains but with a feature of clustering electron-rich and/or dipole groups in their main and/or side chains. In this work, we found a new photoluminescent polymer comprising theophylline (T) and imidazole (I) residues in a suitable ratio in the side chains on the common polystyrenic block (PVB-T/I). We synthesized a block copolymer (denoted as P2) consisting of hydrophobic PVB-T/I and hydrophilic poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), and we investigated its self-assembly into micelles and their micellar features, such as thermo-responsibility, fluorescence emission, pH, and metal ion-dependent photoluminescence, in detail. Especially, the micelles self-assembled from P2 showed intrinsic blue emission which was emitted from the charge transfer association between T and I residues in the intra-chains. Weakening the association by adjustment of the pH or addition of metal ions could evidently reduce the photoluminescence in the micellar state. Very interestingly, among many metal cations, only Pd2+, which can chelate strongly with theophylline, strongly quenched the photoluminescence from the micelles. Therefore, the polymer micelles functioned as an optical sensor for Pd(ii) ion not only by spectroscopy but also with the naked eye.

Cucurbit[n]uril Supramolecular Assemblies-Regulated Charge Transfer for Luminescence Switching of Gold Nanoclusters

Host-guest molecular assemblies are highly desirable for precisely controlling the luminescence properties of nanomaterials. Unfortunately, the design of high-quality luminescent nanoswitches is still very challenging due to the low affinity of traditional macrocyclic molecules (e.g., cyclodextrin) and inherently sophisticated electronic structures of nanoemitters. The current work represents the first to fabricate a luminescent nanoswitch using cucurbit[n]uril supramolecular assemblies-regulated luminescence of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). It is found that, similar to a small-molecule fluorophore-based system, the luminescence of fabricated AuNC-cationic quencher nanohybrids can be reversibly manipulated by cucurbit[7]uril through altering the key parameters of the charge transfer process including the reorganization energy and electronic coupling between charge-transfer reactants. This study demonstrates the crucial role of cucurbit[n]uril host-guest assemblies in modulating the luminescence of AuNCs and their application in luminescence switching, thus offering new avenues for the fabrication and development of optical devices and smart materials.

Kinetically stable sub-50 nm fluorescent block copolymer nanoparticles via photomediated RAFT dispersion polymerization for cellular imaging

Self-assembled block copolymer nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as major potential nanoscale vehicles for fluorescence bioimaging. The preparation of NPs with high yields possessing high kinetic stability to prevent the leakage of fluorophore molecules is crucial to their practical implementation. Here, we report a photomediated RAFT polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) yielding uniform and nanosized poly((oligo(ethylene glycol) acrylate)-block-poly(benzyl acrylate) particles (POEGA-b-PBzA) with a concentration of 22 wt%, over 20 times more than with micellization and nanoprecipitation. The spherical diblock copolymer nanoparticles have an average size of 10-50 nm controllable through the degree of polymerization of the stabilizing POEGA block. Subsequent dialysis against water and swelling with Nile red solution led to highly stable fluorescent NPs able to withstand the changes in concentration, ionic strength, pH or temperature. A PBzA/water interfacial tension of 48.6 mN m^-1 hinders the exchange between copolymer chains, resulting in the trapping of NPs in a "kinetically frozen" state responsible for high stability. A spectroscopic study combining fluorescence and UV-vis absorption agrees with a preferential distribution of fluorophores in the outer POEGEA shell despite its hydrophobic nature. Nile red-doped POEGA-b-PBzA micelles without initiator residues and unimers but with high structural stability turn out to be noncytotoxic, and can be used for the optical imaging of cells. Real-time confocal fluorescence microscopy shows a fast cellular uptake using C2C12 cell lines in minutes, and a preferential localization in the perinuclear region, in particular in the vesicles.

Biodegradable plastics in the air and soil environment: Low degradation rate and high microplastics formation

In recent years, the promotion and use of biodegradable plastics (BPs) are growing into a general trend. Here the degradation performance of different types of BPs was investigated in the natural environment. Their degradation levels followed the order of pure BPs> BP blends> claimed "BP"≈ non-biodegradable plastic after 6-month incubation. Photo- and biodegradation were the main degradation mechanisms of these plastics in the air and soil, respectively. Poly(p-dioxanone) (PPDO) exhibited the highest weight loss potentials in both air (54.7 ± 9.1%) and soil (56.8 ± 4.8%), due to its special ether bond and the rich and diverse microorganisms on its biofilms. The microbiota on PPDO was distinct and enriched with Chloroflexi and Firmicutes that responsible for carbon cycle and organic degradation. The weight loss was only 1.1-8.0% for poly(lactic acid), and 0.8-6.8% for poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate), and other plastics are basically non-degradable. Of note, numerous microplastics were formed after PPDO degradation, with 441 ± 326 and 2103 ± 131 item/g plastic in the air and soil, respectively. Taken together, the monitoring of BP biodegradation in the natural environment is of vital importance, and it is risky to promote large-scale application of BPs if the knowledge gap of their environmental behavior has not been well addressed.

Amphiphilic Au Nanoclusters Modulated by Magnetic Gemini Surfactants as a Cysteine Chemosensor and an MRI Contrast Agent

Cationic magnetic Gemini surfactants (mag-G-surfs), [C₁₄H₂₉(CH₃)₂N(CH₂)₂N(CH₃)₂C₁₄H₂₉]²⁺·2[XCl₃Br]^- (14-2-14·2X, X = Ce, Gd, or Ho), efficiently induce the aggregation of glutathione-protected Au nanoclusters (NCs) (GSH-Au NCs). These magnetic luminescent aggregates not only possess aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior but also display aggregation-induced magnetic enhancement. In particular, 14-2-14·2Ce and 14-2-14·2Gd have a better effect on boosting the luminescence intensity, quantum yield (QY), and luminescence lifetime (τ). The luminescent aggregates of GSH-Au NCs triggered by 14-2-14·2Gd or 14-2-14·2Ho exhibit more favorable paramagnetic behavior. Other Au NCs containing a Au(I)-thiolate complex shell also exhibit the obvious AIE phenomenon after introducing 14-2-14·2Gd, demonstrating the luminescence enhancement effect of mag-G-surfs. The luminescent aggregate 14-2-14·2Ce@GSH-Au NCs can serve as a "light up" fluorometric probe to detect cysteine selectively with the detection limit (DL) of 36 μM, and the magnetic luminescent aggregate 14-2-14·2Gd@GSH-Au NCs has the potential to be a novel contrast agent in T₁-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging due to its satisfactory contrasting ability.

Design and preparation of nanostructures based on Krafft point of nonionic amphiphiles for delivery of poorly water-soluble compounds

Micellar solubilization can effectively dissolve low water-soluble compounds in aqueous environment, however, the micellar systems are not able to withstand dilution and maintain solubilization of poorly water-soluble drugs below critical micelle concentration. To overcome the drawbacks of conventional micellar solubilization, nonionic polyoxyethylated surfactants with Krafft points at or higher than body temperature were chosen to create novel micelle-based nanostructures as a delivery vehicle for poorly water-soluble compounds. A technique "thermo-spray process" was developed for the preparation of the nanostructures-containing formulation, in which the drug-containing micelle solution was first prepared and maintained at the elevated temperature above the Krafft point of the surfactant, then spray dried to solidify the obtained micelle-like nanostructure at room temperature. Lactose was used as an excipient to embed the nanostructures in the thermo-spray products. Water insoluble spherical nanoparticles with size range from 80 to 250 nm were obtained after reconstitution of the product at the temperature lower than Krafft point. When paclitaxel was used as model drug, the micelle-like nanostructures exhibited similar drug entrapment efficiency, solubility enhancement and drug release facilitation as conventional micelles, but provided lower critical micellar concentration at body temperature, and good encapsulation stability upon storage and dilution. These findings indicated that the developed thermo-spray product can serve as a promising delivery platform for drugs with low aqueous solubility.

Amphiphilic hyperbranched polymers: synthesis, characterization and self-assembly performance

Abstract

A series of amphiphilic hyperbranched polymers (AHP-s, the “s” refers to the algebra of AHP) were synthesized by the reaction between hydroxyl-terminated hyperbranched polymers (HBP-s, the “s” refers to the algebra of HBP) and palmitoyl chloride. FTIR, NMR and GPC were used to determine the structure of AHP-s, the results showed that AHP-s exhibits core-shell structure. The thermal properties of polymers were investigated by DSC and TGA. It was found that AHP-2, AHP-3 and AHP-4 display higher thermal stability than AHP-1 (AHP-1, AHP-2, AHP-3 and AHP-4 represent the first, second, third and fourth generation AHP, respectively). Furthermore, the self-assembly performance of AHP-s in THF solvent was investigated by TEM and SEM. Finally, the encapsulation capacity of the AHP-s for methyl orange (MO) was explored at different concentrations of AHP-s and pH conditions. It was found that AHP-s is capable of accommodating hydrophilic guest MO. Moreover, the higher generation of AHP-s, the stronger encapsulation capacity obtained. And the encapsulation capacity closely associated with the pH of encapsulation system.

Rational design and facile fabrication of biocompatible triple responsive dendrimeric nanocages for targeted drug delivery

Multi-responsive polymeric nanoparticles have shown great promise in the sufficient site-specific delivery of drugs in heterogeneous and complicated biological microenvironments, but without great success due to many problems such as sophisticated manufacture process, high cost and cytotoxicity. In this work, a novel triple responsive dendrimeric nanocage (TDN) is fabricated through co-assembling and cross-linking of lipoic acid modified low generation dendrimers with lipoic acid modified polyethylene glycols (PEGs). This nanocage exhibits improved drug loading capacity (about 2 times higher) at a lower temperature and stimuli-responsive drug release profile upon the stimulation of temperature, acid pH and reducing agent. More importantly, the nanocage promotes drug internalization, conduces endosomal escape, and realizes intracellular controlled drug release. Furthermore, the nanocage significantly improves the pharmacokinetics and biodistribution of antitumor drugs, confirming the potent in vivo therapeutic effect with reduced side effects. The rational design and facile fabrication of multi-responsive dendrimeric nanocages provide a "proof-of-concept" for precise targeted drug delivery, and may have great potential for clinical use in the future.

Amphiphilicity Regulation of AgI Nanoclusters: Self-Assembly and Its Application as a Luminescent Probe

Research on the self-assembly of various amphiphilic molecules is a relatively new research area and of great significance. However, new kinds of metal-nanocluster (NC)-based amphiphilic molecule have rarely been explored. Herein, hydrophobic cation 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium (C₁₆ mim⁺ ) was chosen to modify hydrophilic (NH₄ )₆ [Ag₆ (mna)₆ ] (Ag₆ -NCs, H₂ mna=2-mercaptonicotinic acid) and Ag₆ @C₁₆ mim-NCs were obtained. Ag₆ @C₁₆ mim-NCs displayed thermotropic liquid crystal and thermofluorescent properties. Moreover, the Ag₆ @C₁₆ mim-NCs exhibits benign amphiphilicity, and it can self-assemble into ordered nanosheets and nanorods through aggregation in water/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) binary solvent mixtures, whereas single Ag₆ -NCs do not. Meanwhile, the Ag₆ @C₁₆ mim-NCs also displays aggregation-induced emission properties owing to the restriction of intramolecular vibrations of the capping ligands. Furthermore, the luminescent aggregates could detect arginine selectively with the detection limit at 28 μm. This study introduces a new kind of metal-NC-based amphiphilic molecule in a supramolecular self-assembly field, and they have potential to be used as optical materials in applied research.

Carbon quantum dot-based fluorescent vesicles and chiral hydrogels with biosurfactant and biocompatible small molecule

In recent years, it is heartening to witness that carbon quantum dots (CQDs), a rising star in the family of carbon nanomaterials, have displayed tremendous applications in bioimaging, biosensing, drug delivery, optoelectronics, photovoltaics and photocatalysis. However, the investigations toward self-assembly of CQDs are still in their infancy. The participation of CQDs can bring additional functions to supramolecular self-assemblies, with photoluminescent property as the most exciting aspect. Here, we introduce CQDs into two types of classic colloidal systems containing low molecular weight surfactant and gelator to construct fluorescent vesicles and chiral hydrogels. The CQD-based vesicles were constructed through electrostatic interaction between the positively charged CQDs with peripherally substituted imidazolium cations and a negatively-charged biosurfactant, i.e., sodium deoxycholate (NaDC). The chiral hydrogels were prepared by increasing the concentration of NaDC and addition of a tripeptide (glutathione, GSH). It was found that both the hydrogels and corresponding xerogels are highly photoluminescent. A solid sensing system was prepared by coating a uniform layer of the hydrogel onto the silica gel plates by doctor blade technique followed by air-drying, which was then utilized to semiquantitatively detect Cu2+ in aqueous solutions.

Spiropyran in nanoassemblies as a photosensitizer for photoswitchable ROS generation in living cells

Reversibly controlled generation of singlet oxygen from photosensitizing nanosystems has the benefits of selective cell killing and controllable effect time, but is a challenging option for photodynamic therapies. We report a strategy for integrating photochromic spiropyrans into biocompatible cationic polymers, which involved assembling nucleic acids into functional nanoparticles without introducing additional photosensitizers and imaging agents. We found that spiropyran-containing nanoparticles have photoswitching properties for both fluorescence (with a quantum yield of up to 0.27) and singlet oxygen generation (with a quantum yield of up to 0.22) in aqueous solutions and cells, and demonstrated that spiropyrans in nanoassemblies featuring aggregation-induced enhanced photosensitization and emission could be potentially applied in photodynamic therapy studies on tumor cells.

Coassembly of Mixed Weakley-Type Polyoxometalates to Novel Nanoflowers with Tunable Fluorescence for the Detection of Toluene

In this work, three-dimensional nanoflowers with tunable fluorescent properties constructed with mixed Weakley-type polyoxometalates (POMs, Na₉[LnW₁₀O₃₆]·32H₂O, Ln = Eu, Tb, abbreviated to LnW₁₀) and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) have been successfully prepared through a facile ionic self-assembly (ISA) method. The shape and petal size of the nanoflower as well as its fluorescent behaviors can be tuned through varying the ratio of EuW₁₀/TbW₁₀. The varied-temperature emission behaviors at 80-260 K show that the fluorescent intensity of both Tb³⁺ and Eu³⁺ decreased with the increase in temperature, which makes them potential luminescent ratiometric thermometers. Moreover, after being mixed with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), the as-formed hybrid films showed stable fluorescence along with good transparency. The robustness of the hybrid films was also demonstrated by corrosion resistance upon treatment with strong acid and alkali and thus can be used as a sensor to detect toluene circularly. Our results provide a new avenue to the facile construction of fluorescent composites and demonstrate that the POM complexes can be further used in supramolecular chemistry and nanomaterials.

Compartmentalized Microhelices Prepared via Electrohydrodynamic Cojetting

Anisotropically compartmentalized microparticles have attracted increasing interest in areas ranging from sensing, drug delivery, and catalysis to microactuators. Herein, a facile method is reported for the preparation of helically decorated microbuilding blocks, using a modified electrohydrodynamic cojetting method. Bicompartmental microfibers are twisted in situ, during electrojetting, resulting in helical microfibers. Subsequent cryosectioning of aligned fiber bundles provides access to helically decorated microcylinders. The unique helical structure endows the microfibers/microcylinders with several novel functions such as translational motion in response to rotating magnetic fields. Finally, microspheres with helically patterned compartments are obtained after interfacially driven shape shifting of helically decorated microcylinders.

pH-Responsive Nanovesicles with Enhanced Emission Co-Assembled by Ag(I) Nanoclusters and Polyethyleneimine as a Superior Sensor for Al3

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) have been engineered as a new kind of luminescent material, whereas the application of metal NCs in aqueous solution was subjected to great limitations owing to their poor solubility, stability, and strong luminescence quenching in a single-molecule state. Herein, facile supramolecular self-assembly strategy was carried out to enhance the luminescence of Ag(I) NCs (Ag₆-NCs) through multiple electrostatic interactions with polyethyleneimine (PEI). Functional colloid aggregates of Ag₆-NCs such as nanospheres and nanovesicles were formed along with the enhanced emission because of the formation of compact-ordered self-assemblies, which effectively restricted intramolecular vibration of the capping ligands on Ag₆-NCs to diminish the nonradiative decay. All those could block energy loss and facilitated the radiative relaxation of excited states which ultimately induced an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon. Furthermore, the luminescent Ag₆-NCs/PEI nanovesicles are pH-responsive and show a superior fluorescent sensing behavior for the detection of Al³⁺ with a limit of detection low to 3 μM. This is the first report about AIE of silver NCs with polymers in aqueous solution. This work sheds light on the controlled NCs-based supramolecular self-assembly and the NCs-based functional materials, which will be well-established candidates in controllable drug delivery, biomarkers, and sensors in aqueous solution.

Self-assembly of water-soluble silver nanoclusters: superstructure formation and morphological evolution

Supramolecular self-assembly, based on non-covalent interactions, has been employed as an efficient approach to obtain various functional materials from nanometer-sized building blocks, in particular, [Ag₆(mna)₆]^6-, mna = mercaptonicotinate (Ag₆-NC). A challenging issue is how to modulate the self-assembly process through regulating the relationship between building blocks and solvents. Herein, we report the controlled self-assembly of hexanuclear silver nanoclusters into robust multilayer vesicles in different solvents, DMSO, CH₃CN, EG and MeOH. Their unique luminescence enables them to be bifunctional probes to sense Fe³⁺ and dl-dithiothreitol (DTT). By protonating the Ag₆-NC to Ag₆-H-NC using hydrochloric acid (HCl), the multilayer vesicles survive in aprotic solvents, DMSO and CH₃CN, but are transformed to nanowires in protic solvents, water, EG and MeOH. Our results demonstrated that the solvent-bridged H-bond plays a key role in the evolution of the morphologies from vesicles to nanowires. Moreover, the nanowires could further hierarchically self-assemble in water into hydrogels with high water content (99.5%), and with remarkable mechanical strength and self-healing properties. This study introduces a robust cluster-based building block in a supramolecular self-assembly system and reveals the significance of aprotic and protic solvents for the modulation of the morphologies of cluster-based aggregates.

Dual stimuli-responsive Fe3O4 graft poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl ferrocenecarboxylate) copolymer micromicelles: surface RAFT synthesis, self-assembly and drug release applications

BACKGROUND

Stimuli-responsive polymer materials are a new kind of intelligent materials based on the concept of bionics, which exhibits more significant changes in physicochemical properties upon triggered by tiny environment stimuli, hence providing a good carrier platform for antitumor drug delivery.

RESULTS

Dual stimuli-responsive Fe3O4 graft poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl ferrocenecarboxylate) block copolymers (Fe3O4-g-PAA-b-PMAEFC) were engineered and synthesized through a two-step sequential reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization route. The characterization was performed by FTIR, 1H NMR, SEC, XRD and TGA techniques. The self-assembly behavior in aqueous solution upon triggered by pH, magnetic and redox stimuli was investigated via zeta potentials, vibration sample magnetometer, cyclic voltammetry, fluorescent spectrometry, dynamic light scattering, XPS, TEM and SEM measurements. The experimental results indicated that the Fe3O4-g-PAA-b-PMAEFC copolymer materials could spontaneously assemble into hybrid magnetic copolymer micromicelles with core-shell structure, and exhibited superparamagnetism, redox and pH stimuli-responsive features. The hybrid copolymer micromicelles were stable and nontoxic, and could entrap hydrophobic anticancer drug, which was in turn swiftly and effectively delivered from the drug-loaded micromicelles at special microenvironments such as acidic pH and high reactive oxygen species.

CONCLUSION

This class of stimuli-responsive copolymer materials is expected to find wide applications in medical science and biology, etc., especially in drug delivery system.

Multi-stimuli-responsive biohybrid nanoparticles with cross-linked albumin coronae self-assembled by a polymer-protein biodynamer

A thermoresponsive polymer-protein biodynamer was prepared via the bioconjugation of an aliphatic aldehyde-functionalized copolymer to hydrazine-modified bovine serum albumin (BSA) through reversible pyridylhydrazone linkages. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and size exclusion chromatography (SEC) results indicated that the pyridylhydrazone linkages cleaved in an intracellular-mimicking acidic milieu, thus leading to the release of BSA. The dynamic character of the protein biodynamer was demonstrated by exchange reactions with aldehyde-containing molecules. The biodynamer self-assembled into spherical micelles at a temperature above its lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Subsequently, BSA molecules within the hydrophilic coronae of the micelles were readily cross-linked via reaction with cystamine at 45°C, and multi-stimuli-responsive nanoparticles were generated. The biohybrid nanoparticles reversibly swelled and shrank as the cores of the nanoparticles were solvated below the LCST and desolvated above the LCST. The accessible reversibility of the pyridylhydrazone bonds imparts pH-responsive and dynamic characteristics to the nanoparticles. The nanoparticles displayed glutathione (GSH) responsiveness, and the synergistic effects of pH and GSH resulted in complete disintegration of the nanoparticles under the intracellular-mimicking acidic and reductive conditions. The nanoparticles were also enzyme-responsive and disintegrated rapidly in the presence of protease. In vitro cytotoxicity and cell uptake assays demonstrated that the nanoparticles were highly biocompatible and effectively internalized by HepG2 cells, which make them interesting candidates as vehicles for drug delivery application and biomimetic platforms to investigate the biological process in nature.

SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT

In this research, we report the synthesis of a temperature and pH dual-responsive polymer-protein biodynamer through reversible pyridylhydrazone formation. The prepared biodynamer can offer a potential platform for intracellular protein delivery. The multi-stimuli-responsive biohybrid nanoparticles containing disulfide functionalities are constructed by cross-linking albumin coronae of the biodynamer micelles. With the combination of a thermoresponsive polymer, protein and reversible covalent bonds, the biohybrid nanoparticles are endowed with highly biocompatible, environmentally responsive and adaptive features. These nanoparticles present the ability to undergo changes in their constitution, hydrodynamic size and nanostructure in response to physical, chemical and biological stimuli, which make them interesting candidates as vehicles for drug delivery application and a biomimetic platform to investigate the biological process in nature.

A Step-by-Step Multiple Stimuli-Responsive Nanoplatform for Enhancing Combined Chemo-Photodynamic Therapy

A robust and smart protoporphyrin-based polymer nanoplatform, which is capable of successively recognizing the variation of biological signals and reacting with them in a dynamic mode, is successfully developed. It combines the chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy in a same system, leading to a high treatment outcome while a low adverse side effect of therapeutic agent.

Predicting the role of seed morphology in the evolution of anisotropic nanocatalysts

Controlling the structure of nanocrystals is an effective way to tune their properties and improve performance in a wide variety of applications. However, the atomic pathways for achieving this goal are difficult to identify and exercise, due to competing kinetic and thermodynamic influences during formation. In particular, an understanding of how symmetry, and symmetry breaking, determine nanocrystal morphology would significantly advance our ability to produce nanomaterials with prescribed functions. In this study we present results of a detailed computational study into the atomic structure of platinum nanoparticles at early growth stages of formation, as a function of temperature and atomic deposition rates. We investigate the impact of different types of crystalline seeds and characterize the emergent structures via simulated High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) images. We find that the choice of initial seed is an important driver for symmetry breaking, due to a combination of atomic deposition and etching on different seed facets. A mix of low index facets causes the formation of important surface defects, in addition to the absorption/adsorption of single atoms, which can be correlated with different catalytic reactions as the process perpetuates. These findings provide new insights into nanocrystal shape-control mechanisms and suggest new opportunities for future design of this important class of nanomaterials.

Selective Metal-Ion-Mediated Vesicle Adhesion Based on Dynamic Self-Organization of a Pyrene-Appended Glutamic Acid

Vesicles with dynamic membranes provide an ideal model system for investigating biological membrane activities, whereby vesicle aggregation behaviors including adhesion, fusion, fission, and membrane contraction/extension have attracted much attention. In this work we utilize an aromatic amino acid (pyrene-appended glutamic acid, PGlu) to prepare nanovesicles that aggregate to form vesicle clusters selectively induced by Fe(3+) or Cu(2+), and the vesicles transform into irregular nano-objects when interacting with Al(3+). Vesicle clusters have better stability than pristine vesicles, which hinders the spontaneous morphological transformation from vesicles into lamellar nanosheets with long incubation period. The difference between complexation of Fe(3+) and Al(3+) with vesicles was studied by various techniques. On the basis of metal ion-vesicle interactions, this self-assembled nanovesicle system also behaves as an effective fluorescent sensor for Fe(3+) and Al(3+), which cause fluorescence quenching and enhanced excimer emission, respectively.

A multi-stimuli responsive switch as a fluorescent molecular analogue of transistors

Although the quantum nature of molecules makes them specially suitable for mimicking the operation of digital electronic elements, molecular compounds can also be envisioned to emulate the behavior of analog devices. In this work we report a novel fluorescent three-state switch capable of reproducing the analog response of transistors, an ubiquitous device in modern electronics. Exploiting the redox and thermal sensitivity of this compound, the amplitude of its fluorescence emission can be continuously modulated, in a similar way as the output current in a transistor is amplified by the gate-to-source voltage.

Fluorescent Block Copolymer Micelles That Can Self-Report on Their Assembly and Small Molecule Encapsulation

Block copolymer micelles have been prepared with a dithiomaleimide (DTM) fluorophore located in either the core or shell. Poly(triethylene glycol acrylate)-b-poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (P(TEGA)-b-P(tBA)) was synthesized by RAFT polymerization, with a DTM-functional acrylate monomer copolymerized into either the core forming P(tBA) block or the shell forming P(TEGA) block. Self-assembly by direct dissolution afforded spherical micelles with R_h of ca. 35 nm. Core-labeled micelles (CLMs) displayed bright emission (Φ_f = 17%) due to good protection of the fluorophore, whereas shell-labeled micelles (SLMs) had lower efficiency emission due to collisional quenching in the solvated corona. The transition from micelles to polymer unimers upon dilution could be detected by measuring the emission intensity of the solutions. For the core-labeled micelles, the fluorescence lifetime was also responsive to the supramolecular state, the lifetime being significantly longer for the micelles (τ_Av,I = 19 ns) than for the polymer unimers (τ_Av,I = 9 ns). The core-labeled micelles could also self-report on the presence of a fluorescent hydrophobic guest molecule (Nile Red) as a result of Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the DTM fluorophore and the guest. The sensitivity of the DTM fluorophore to its environment therefore provides a simple handle to obtain detailed structural information for the labeled polymer micelles. A case will also be made for the application superiority of core-labeled micelles over shell-labeled micelles for the DTM fluorophore.
