Interlayer Registry Index of Layered Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Inspired by the fascinating electronic properties of twisted transition metal dichalcogenides, we extend the registry index approach to quantify the interlayer commensurability of homogeneous and heterogeneous interfaces of MoS₂, WS₂, MoSe₂, and WSe₂. The developed geometric measure provides quantitative information about their sliding energy landscape with vast mechanical and tribological implications. Furthermore, the registry index is highly suitable for characterizing surface reconstruction in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide interfaces that dictates their intricate electronic and ferroelectric properties. The simple and intuitive nature of the registry index marks it as a powerful computational tool for studying the fascinating physical phenomena demonstrated by these materials.

Solubility of paracetamol in ethanol by molecular dynamics using the extended Einstein crystal method and experiments

Li and co-workers [Li et al., J. Chem. Phys. 146, 214110 (2017)] have recently proposed a methodology to compute the solubility of molecular compounds from first principles, using molecular dynamics simulations. We revise and further explore their methodology that was originally applied to naphthalene in water at low concentration. In particular, we compute the solubility of paracetamol in an ethanol solution at ambient conditions. For the simulations, we used a force field that we previously reparameterized to reproduce certain thermodynamic properties of paracetamol but not explicitly its solubility in ethanol. In addition, we have determined the experimental solubility by performing turbidity measurements using a Crystal16 over a range of temperatures. Our work serves a dual purpose: (i) methodologically, we clarify how to compute, with a relatively straightforward procedure, the solubility of molecular compounds and (ii) applying this procedure, we show that the solubility predicted by our force field (0.085 ± 0.014 in mole ratio) is in good agreement with the experimental value obtained from our experiments and those reported in the literature (average 0.0585 ± 0.004), considering typical deviations for predictions from first principle methods. The good agreement between the experimental and the calculated solubility also suggests that the method used to reparameterize the force field can be used as a general strategy to optimize force fields for simulations in solution.

Structural superlubricity and ultralow friction across the length scales

Structural superlubricity, a state of ultralow friction and wear between crystalline surfaces, is a fundamental phenomenon in modern tribology that defines a new approach to lubrication. Early measurements involved nanometre-scale contacts between layered materials, but recent experimental advances have extended its applicability to the micrometre scale. This is an important step towards practical utilization of structural superlubricity in future technological applications, such as durable nano- and micro-electromechanical devices, hard drives, mobile frictionless connectors, and mechanical bearings operating under extreme conditions. Here we provide an overview of the field, including its birth and main achievements, the current state of the art and the challenges to fulfilling its potential.

Classification of epitaxy in reciprocal and real space: rigid versus flexible lattices

Early investigations of epitaxy focused on inorganic adsorbates consisting of atoms or few-atom molecules, where commensurate registries are predominantly encountered. Expanding such studies to larger (organic) molecules has revealed hitherto unknown types of epitaxy with coherence between adlayer and substrate lattices in just one direction. Here we review recent contributions to the fundamental understanding and modeling of epitaxy. By sorting the ideas brought forward in the literature and amending some basic algebraic considerations a universal scheme for the classification of lattice epitaxy is presented. Ultimately, the occurrence of the different types of epitaxy is made plausible by easy-to-grasp energetic arguments.
