Controllable dried patterns of colloidal drops

HYPOTHESIS

When an aqueous colloidal drop dries on a solid substrate, the final pattern of the dried deposit can be manipulated through controlling the internal flow states of the drop.

EXPERIMENTS

We report a strategy to control the dried patterns of aqueous colloidal drop by controlling the drop configurations and relative humidity. For this purpose, both sessile and pendant drops are studied.

FINDING

The capillary flow, which is responsible for coffee-ring, is suppressed by increasing the relative humidity. Then, surprisingly, the internal convection in the pendant drop is significantly stronger than that in the sessile drop. This phenomenon leads to the formation of the disc-like and spot-like dried patterns in the sessile and pendant drop, respectively, which are the results of different interactions between the Marangoni and (buoyancy-induced) natural convections in the sessile and pendant drops. In the sessile drop, the Marangoni and natural convections mutually restrain each other due to their opposite flow directions. In contrast, in the pendant drop, the two convections mutually enhance each other, due to their same flow directions. Thisnew strategy offers a foreign-material-free and external-force-free means to control the dried patterns of the drop.

Well-Ordered Inorganic Nanoparticle Arrays Directed by Block Copolymer Nanosheets

Precise control over the spatial arrangement of inorganic nanoparticles on a large scale is desirable for the design of functional nanomaterials, sensing, and optical/electronic devices. Although great progress has been recently made in controlling the organization of nanoparticles, there still remains a grand challenge to arrange nanoparticles into highly-ordered arrays over multiple length scales. Here, we report the directed arrangement of inorganic nanoparticles into arrayed structures with long-range order, up to tens of microns, by using hexagonally-packed cylindrical patterns of block copolymer nanosheets self-assembled within collapsed emulsion droplets as scaffolds. This technique can be used to generate nanoparticle arrays with various nanoparticle arrangements, including hexagonal honeycomb structures, periodic nanoring structures, and their combinations. This finding provides an effective route to fabricate diverse nanoparticle arrayed structures for the design of functional materials and devices.

Magnetic Field-Driven Convection for Directed Surface Patterning of Colloids

Drying sessile droplets is a promising route to transform colloidal dispersions into surface coatings, which are widely used in material design and biochemical detection. However, directing the assembly of the particles within drying droplets and achieving surface patterns beyond the well-known coffee-ring formation remain a challenge. Here, we present a new principle of directing the assembly of nonmagnetic colloidal particles dispersed in a magnetic fluid and generating unusual surface patterns. We use the ability of ferrofluids to change phases with the application of magnetic fields to program the assembly of nonmagnetic microparticles present in drying sessile droplets. We show that in the absence of external magnetic field, the superparamagnetic nanoparticles in the magnetic fluid are spontaneously transported to the droplet edge because of solvent evaporation. This nanoparticle transport leads to the formation of nanoparticle-rich edge and nanoparticle-depleted center of the drying droplet. Upon the application of a uniform external magnetic field, the asymmetry in the magnetic nanoparticle distribution drives a magnetostatic convection and finger-like instability from the droplet edge to the center. This magnetic microconvection from droplet edge-to-center reverses the particle transport from center-to-edge, well-known for drying droplets in the absence of external field. We use this magnetostatic microconvection to assemble secondary nonmagnetic microspheres in droplets, overwriting ring formation and direct their assembly into four distinct kinetically stable states. The method presented here offers an active control over the colloidal assembly achieved by drying sessile droplets and thus enables a new route for fabricating complex patterns and functional surface coating.

Binary "island" shaped arrays with high-density hot spots for surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates

We have demonstrated a facile and low-cost approach for the fabrication of binary "island" shaped arrays (BISA) with high-density hot spots as reproducible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates by depositing a self-assembled monolayer Au nanoparticle (AuNP) film with small gaps onto a two-dimensional (2D) silica microsphere opal structure. By varying the size of silica spheres, the SERS performance of the BISA substrate with an enhancement factor (EF) of 3.74 × 10¹⁰ magnitude and the corresponding signal intensity deviation of below 8% using 770 nm silica sphere arrays were achieved. Compared with the assembled monolayer AuNP film on a planar substrate, the BISA enabled the installation of more AuNPs as a source of hot spots due to the undulation of morphology on the nanoscale within the designated laser-illumination area. In addition, a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation suggested that the BISA structure provided geometric conditions for increasing the intensity of the formed hot spots, and the strong periodic electric fields on the BISA are located not only in the gap between adjacent AuNPs, but also along the boundary of the neighboring island of silica spheres. Surface plasmon-decayed hot carriers (hot electrons and hot holes) from AuNPs can be applied in the field of energy conversion (i.e., photocatalysis), integrated with the SERS as a sensitive optical indicator to accurately monitor the catalytic reaction process. Furthermore, we examined the catalytic reaction process of the dimerization of 4-ATP into DMAB and found that photocatalytic activity could be tuned by changing the size of silica spheres. This study provides a new design route for the fabrication of the SERS platform with high sensitivity and reproducibility to detect molecules or improve catalyst efficiency.
