Unraveling nanosprings: morphology control and mechanical characterization

Nanosprings demonstrate promising mechanical characteristics, positioning them as pivotal components in a diverse array of potential nanoengineering applications. To unlock the full potential of these nanosprings, ongoing research is concentrated on emulating springs at the nanoscale in terms of both morphology and function. This review underscores recent advancements in the field and provides a comprehensive overview of the diverse methods employed for nanospring preparation. Understanding the general mechanism behind nanospring formation lays the groundwork for the informed design of nanosprings. The synthesis section delineates four prominent methods employed for nanospring fabrication: vapor phase synthesis, templating methods, post-treatment techniques, and molecular engineering. Each method is critically analyzed, highlighting its strengths, limitations, and potential for scalability. Mechanical properties of nanosprings are explored in depth, discussing their response to external stimuli and their potential applications in various fields such as sensing, energy storage, and biomedical engineering. The interplay between nanospring morphology and mechanical behavior is elucidated, providing insights into the design principles for tailored functionality. Additionally, we anticipate that the evolution of state-of-the-art characterization tools, such as in situ transmission electron microscopy, 3D electron tomography, and machine learning, will significantly contribute to both the study of nanospring mechanisms and their applications.

Flexible and transparent electrodes imprinted from Au nanowires: stability and ageing

We study the stability of flexible transparent electrodes (FTEs) that were self-assembled from ultra-thin gold nanowires (AuNW) by direct nanoimprinting of inks with different particle concentrations (1 to 10 mg mL^-1). The resulting lines were less than 3 μm wide and contained bundles of AuNW with oleylamine (OAm) ligand shells. Small-angle X-ray scattering confirmed a concentration-independent bundle structure. Plasma sintering converted the wire assemblies into lines with a thin metal shell that contributes most to electrical conductivity and covers a hybrid core. We studied the relative change in sheet resistance and the morphology of the FTEs with time. The sheet resistance increased at all concentrations, but at different rates. The metal shell aged by de-wetting and pore formation. The hybrid core de-mixed and densified, which led to a partial collapse of the shell. Residual organics migrated through the shell via its pores. Lines formed at low concentration (c _Au = 2 to 3 mg mL^-1) contained less residual organics and aged slower than those formed at high c _Au ≥ 5 mg mL^-1. We passivated the conductive shell with thin, adsorbed layers of PEDOT:PSS and found that it decelerated degradation by slowing surface diffusion and hindering further rupture of the shell. Thick capping layers prevented degradation entirely and stopped pore formation.

Flexible and transparent electrodes imprinted from metal nanostructures: morphology and opto-electronic performance

We directed the self-assembly of nanoscale colloids via direct nanoimprint lithography to create flexible transparent electrodes (FTEs) with metal line widths below 3 μm in a roll-to-roll-compatible process. Gold nanowires and nanospheres with oleylamine shells were imprinted with soft silicone stamps, arranged into grids of parallel lines, and converted into metal lines in a plasma process. We studied the hierarchical structure and opto-electronic performance of the resulting grids as a function of particle geometry and concentration. The performance in terms of optical transmittance was dominated by the line width. Analysis of cross-sections indicated that plasma sintering only partially removed the insulating ligands and formed lines with thin conductive shells and a non-conductive core. We provide evidence that the self-assembly of high-aspect nanowires can compensate for defects of the stamp and substrate irregularities during imprinting, while spheres cannot. The wire-based electrodes thus outperformed the sphere-based electrodes at ratios of optical transmittance to sheet resistance of up to ≈ 0.9% Ω_sq ^-1, while spheres only reached ≈ 0.55% Ω_sq ^-1.

Designing anisotropic inorganic nanocapsules via self-assembly of polymer-like ultrathin Au nanowires

Anisotropic assembly of nanomaterials into hollow structures is an attractive technique in biomedicine and biosensing. Commonly used polymer materials are easy to assemble yet it is hard to form anisotropic morphologies. Here in this work, we successfully prepared a novel gold nanocapsule with an anisotropic ellipsoidal shape and cavity structure by the self-assembly of ultrathin Au nanowires. The assembly mechanism is further studied by tuning the assembly conditions such as nanowire concentration, solvent composition, and temperature. It is found that the controlling forces of the nanowire assembly process are mainly the symmetric interfacial tension and the asymmetric nanowire deformation potential, which contribute together to result in anisotropic nanocapsules. Finally, the obtained Au nanocapsules were used as nanocarriers to load pyrene as a model drug, showing great drug loading ability and pH-responsive drug release behavior. We believe that this unique anisotropic assembly product will bring new insights into nanostructure design and soft matter research.

Surface-Confined Winding Assembly of Mesoporous Nanorods

Bending and folding are important stereoscopic geometry parameters of one-dimensional (1D) nanomaterials, yet the precise control of them has remained a great challenge. Herein, a surface-confined winding assembly strategy is demonstrated to regulate the stereoscopic architecture of uniform 1D mesoporous SiO2 (mSiO2) nanorods. Based on this brand-new strategy, the 1D mSiO2 nanorods can wind on the surface of 3D premade nanoparticles (sphere, cube, hexagon disk, spindle, rod, etc.) and inherit their surface topological structures. Therefore, the mSiO2 nanorods with a diameter of ∼50 nm and a variable length can be bent into arc shapes with variable radii and radians, as well as folded into 60, 90, 120, and 180° angular convex corners with controllable folding times. Additionally, in contrast to conventional core@shell structures, this winding structure induces partial exposure and accessibility of the premade nanoparticles. The functional nanoparticles can exhibit large accessible surface and efficient energy exchanges with the surroundings. As a proof of concept, winding-structured CuS&mSiO2 nanocomposites are fabricated, which are made up of a 100 nm CuS nanosphere and the 1D mSiO2 nanorods with a diameter of ∼50 nm winding the nanosphere in the perimeter. The winding structured nanocomposites are demonstrated to have fourfold photoacoustic imaging intensity compared with the conventional core@shell nanostructure with an inaccessible core because of the greatly enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency (increased by ∼30%). Overall, our work paves the way to the design and synthesis of 1D nanomaterials with controllable bending and folding, as well as the formation of high-performance complex nanocomposites.

Confinement Assembly of ABC Triblock Terpolymers for the High-Yield Synthesis of Janus Nanorings

Block copolymers are versatile building blocks for the self-assembly of functional nanostructures in bulk and solution. While spheres, cylinders, and bilayer sheets are thermodynamically preferred shapes and frequently observed, ring-shaped nanoparticles are more challenging to realize due to energetic penalties that originate from their anisotropic curvature. Today, a handful of concepts exist that produce core-shell nanorings, while more complex ( e. g., patchy) nanorings are currently out of reach and have only been predicted theoretically. Here, we demonstrate that confinement assembly of properly designed ABC triblock terpolymers is a general route to synthesize Janus nanorings in high purity. The triblock terpolymer self-assembles in the spherical confinement of nanoemulsion droplets into prolate ellipsoidal microparticles with an axially stacked lamellar-ring ( lr)-morphology. We clarified and visualized this complex, yet well-ordered, morphology with transmission electron tomography. Blocks A and C formed stacks of lamellae with the B microdomain sandwiched in-between as nanorings. Cross-linking of the B-rings allowed disassembly of the microparticles into Janus nanorings carrying two strictly separated polymer brushes of A and C on the top and bottom. Decreasing the B volume leads to Janus spheres and rods, while an increase of B results in perforated and filled Janus disks. The confinement assembly of ABC triblock terpolymers is a general process that can be extended to other block chemistries and will allow to synthesize a large variety of complex micro- and nanoparticles that inspire studies in self-assembly, interfacial stabilization, colloidal packing, and nanomedicine.

Gold nanospirals on colloidal gold nanoparticles

Synthesis of asymmetric nanostructures has always been a great challenge. In particular, there are only limited approaches for growing spiral nanowires in solution, and almost all of them require templates. Here, as a step in advancing the synthetic capability at the nanoscale, we report a wet chemistry template-free approach for growing hybrids spiral gold nanowires. The spiral gold nanowires were grown from the surface of colloidal gold nanoparticles, forming hybrid Au nanostructures. As an application of the active surface growth mechanism, the mechanistic understanding enables systematic adjustment of the nanowire morphology. The length and width of the spiral nanowires could be readily adjusted. Furthermore, the number of spiral nanowire on each Au nanoparticle, could be tuned by the pre-hydrolysis of the surface modification reagent. Such versatile system allows creation of complex nanostructures like the octopus-like and spider-like Au hybrids.

Highly Stretchable Fiber-Shaped Supercapacitors Based on Ultrathin Gold Nanowires with Double-Helix Winding Design

The ability of developing highly durable fiber-shaped electronic devices is crucial for next-generation smart textile electronics. Past several years have witnessed encouraging progress made in stretchable fiber-shaped supercapacitors using carbon materials, transition metal oxides, and conducting polymers. Here, we report a dry-spun strategy to produce scalable ultrathin gold nanowire-based fibers, which can lead to highly stretchable fiber-based supercapacitors using a double-helix winding design. Hildebrand's and Hansen's solubility parameters of gold nanowire-binding oleylamine ligands match those of styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene and tetrahydrofuran, enabling the formation of high-quality dry-spun fibers. In conjunction with conductivity enhancement by electroless plating and pseudocapacitance by polyaniline, we obtained fiber-shaped supercapacitors stretchable up to 360% with a capacitance of 16.80 mF cm^-2. The capacitance retention is about 85% after 2000 cycles of 0-200-0% stretching/releasing. Our fiber capacitors can be woven into an everyday glove, with negligible capacitance changes for normal finger movements.

The Sub-Nanometer Scale as a New Focus in Nanoscience

Size is one of the central issues in nanoscience. The practical meaning of the term "sub-nanometric material (SNM)" requires two aspects: (1) its size should be at the atomic level; (2) it shows unique (size-related) properties compared to its nano-counterparts with larger sizes. Here, SNMs in the form of wires (SNWs) and the unique properties arising from their special size are reviewed. First, their polymer-like behavior, including rheological behavior and self-assembly, is dicussed. Their origins may stem from the special size and the ligands around the wire. Even a slight increase in diameter would risk the polymer-like behavior. Meanwhile, the ligands on SNWs are proportional to the inorganic entity at this scale. Consequently, surface ligands should have a profound impact on the properties, like catalysis, self-assembly, optics, etc. To reveal more potential applications, their applications in energy conversion are comprehensively reviewed. To some extent, characterization can greatly influence the way things are observed. Thus, some appropriate characterization techniques are briefly introduced. Finally, another emerging part of SNWs (atomic chain material) is briefly introduced. It is hoped that this review can provide new insights to this special scale.

Synthesis and Properties of the Self-Assembly of Gold-Copper Nanoparticles into Nanoribbons

We report the efficient wet-chemical production of self-assembled gold-copper bimetallic nanoparticles (diameter of ∼2 nm) into two-dimensional flexible ribbonlike nanostructures. The direct observation of a layered arrangement of particles into nanoribbons was provided through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron tomography. These nanoribbons showed photoluminesce and efficient photocatalytic activity for the conversion of 4-nitrophenol. The thermal stability of the nanoribbons was also measured by in situ heat treatment in the electron microscope, confirming that the self-assembled gold-copper nanoribbons efficiently supported up to 350 °C. The final morphology of the nanoparticles and their ability to self-assemble into flexible nanoribbons were dependent on concentration and the ratio of precursors. Therefore, these experimental factors were discussed. Remarkably, the presence of copper was found to be critical to triggering the self-assembly of nanoparticles into ordered layered structures. These results for the synthesis and stability of self-assemblies of metallic nanoparticles present a potential extension of the method to producing materials with catalytic applications.

Twisting Ultrathin Au Nanowires into Double Helices

Previously, double helix nanowire was reported by coating Pd/Pt/Au onto Au-Ag alloy nanowire. Here, straight oleylamine-stabilized ultrathin Au nanowires with single crystalline fcc lattice are surprisingly converted into double helix helices upon reacting with Ag in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The obtained Au-Ag helical nanowires contain lattice distinctively different from the fcc lattice and are different in many aspects with the previous system. The discovery may expand the scope of nanoscale double helix formation and the understanding of lattice transformation among ultrafine nanostructures.

Au nanowire junction breakup through surface atom diffusion

Metallic nanowires are known to break into shorter fragments due to the Rayleigh instability mechanism. This process is strongly accelerated at elevated temperatures and can completely hinder the functioning of nanowire-based devices like e.g. transparent conductive and flexible coatings. At the same time, arranged gold nanodots have important applications in electrochemical sensors. In this paper we perform a series of annealing experiments of gold and silver nanowires and nanowire junctions at fixed temperatures 473, 673, 873 and 973 K (200 °C, 400 °C, 600 °C and 700 °C) during a time period of 10 min. We show that nanowires are especially prone to fragmentation around junctions and crossing points even at comparatively low temperatures. The fragmentation process is highly temperature dependent and the junction region breaks up at a lower temperature than a single nanowire. We develop a gold parametrization for kinetic Monte Carlo simulations and demonstrate the surface diffusion origin of the nanowire junction fragmentation. We show that nanowire fragmentation starts at the junctions with high reliability and propose that aligning nanowires in a regular grid could be used as a technique for fabricating arrays of nanodots.

Nanoparticle Superlattices: The Roles of Soft Ligands

Nanoparticle superlattices are periodic arrays of nanoscale inorganic building blocks including metal nanoparticles, quantum dots and magnetic nanoparticles. Such assemblies can exhibit exciting new collective properties different from those of individual nanoparticle or corresponding bulk materials. However, fabrication of nanoparticle superlattices is nontrivial because nanoparticles are notoriously difficult to manipulate due to complex nanoscale forces among them. An effective way to manipulate these nanoscale forces is to use soft ligands, which can prevent nanoparticles from disordered aggregation, fine-tune the interparticle potential as well as program lattice structures and interparticle distances - the two key parameters governing superlattice properties. This article aims to review the up-to-date advances of superlattices from the viewpoint of soft ligands. We first describe the theories and design principles of soft-ligand-based approach and then thoroughly cover experimental techniques developed from soft ligands such as molecules, polymer and DNA. Finally, we discuss the remaining challenges and future perspectives in nanoparticle superlattices.

Polymerization-Like Co-Assembly of Silver Nanoplates and Patchy Spheres

Highly anisometric nanoparticles have distinctive mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties and are therefore appealing candidates for use as self-assembly building blocks. Here, we demonstrate that ultra-anisometric nanoplates, which have a nanoscale thickness but a micrometer-scale edge length, offer many material design capabilities. In particular, we show that these nanoplates "copolymerize" in a predictable way with patchy spheres (Janus and triblock particles) into one- and two-dimensional structures with tunable architectural properties. We find that, on the pathway to these structures, nanoplates assemble into chains following the kinetics of molecular step-growth polymerization. In the same mechanistic framework, patchy spheres control the size distribution and morphology of assembled structures, by behaving as monofunctional chain stoppers or multifunctional branch points during nanoplate polymerization. In addition, both the lattice constant and the stiffness of the nanoplate assemblies can be manipulated after assembly. We see highly anisometric nanoplates as one representative of a broader class of dual length-scale nanoparticles, with the potential to enrich the library of structures and properties available to the nanoparticle self-assembly toolbox.

Assembly of Ultrathin Gold Nanowires into Honeycomb Macroporous Pattern Films with High Transparency and Conductivity

Because of its promising properties, honeycomb macroporous pattern (HMP) film has attracted increasing attention. It has been realized in many artificial nanomaterials, but the formation of these HMPs was attributed to templates or polymer/supermolecule/surfactant assistant assembly. Pure metal HMP film has been difficult to produce using a convenient colloidal template-free method. In this report, a unique template-free approach for preparation of Au HMP film with high transparency and conductivity is presented. Ultrathin Au nanowires, considered a linear polymer analogue, are directly assembled into HMP film on various substrates using a traditional static breath figure method. Subsequent chemical cross-linking and oxygen plasma treatment greatly enhance the stability and conductivity of the HMP film. The resulting HMP film exhibits great potential as an ideal candidate for transparent flexible conductive nanodevices.
