Ultrasensitive Vertical Piezotronic Transistor Based on ZnO Twin Nanoplatelet

A Versatile Chitosan-Based Hydrogel Accelerates Infected Wound Healing via Bacterial Elimination, Antioxidation, Immunoregulation, and Angiogenesis

Drug-resistant bacterial infection of cutaneous wounds causes great harm to the human body. These infections are characterized by a microenvironment with recalcitrant bacterial infections, persistent oxidative stress, imbalance of immune regulation, and suboptimal angiogenesis. Treatment strategies available to date are incapable of handling the healing dynamics of infected wounds. A Schiff base and borate ester cross-linked hydrogel, based on phenylboronic acid-grafted chitosan (CS-PBA), dibenzaldehyde-grafted poly(ethylene glycol), and tannic acid (TA), is fabricated in the present study. Customized phenylboronic acid-modified zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO) are embedded in the hydrogel prior to gelation. The CPP@ZnO-P-TA hydrogel effectively eliminates methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) due to the pH-responsive release of Zn2+ and TA. Killing is achieved via membrane damage, adenosine triphosphate reduction, leakage of intracellular components, and hydrolysis of bacterial o-nitrophenyl-β-d-galactopyranoside. The CPP@ZnO-P-TA hydrogel is capable of scavenging reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, alleviating oxidative stress, and stimulating M2 polarization of macrophages. The released Zn2+ and TA also induce neovascularization via the PI3K/Akt pathway. The CPP@ZnO-P-TA hydrogel improves tissue regeneration in vivo by alleviating inflammatory responses, stimulating angiogenesis, and facilitating collagen deposition. These findings suggest that this versatile hydrogel possesses therapeutic potential for the treatment of MRSA-infected cutaneous wounds.

Recent progress in flexible micro-pressure sensors for wearable health monitoring

In recent years, flexible micro-pressure sensors have been used widely in wearable health monitoring applications due to their excellent flexibility, stretchability, non-invasiveness, comfort wearing and real-time detection. According to the working mechanism of the flexible micro-pressure sensor, it can be classified as piezoresistive, piezoelectric, capacitive and triboelectric types. Herein, an overview of flexible micro-pressure sensors for wearable health monitoring is presented. The physiological signaling and body motions contain a lot of health status information. Thus, this review focuses on the applications of flexible micro-pressure sensors in these fields. Additionally, the contents of sensing mechanism, sensing materials and performance of flexible micro-pressure sensors are introduced in detail. Finally, we predict the future research directions of the flexible micro-pressure sensors, and discuss the challenges in practical applications.

2D Zinc Oxide - Synthesis, Methodologies, Reaction Mechanism, and Applications

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a thermally stable n-type semiconducting material. ZnO 2D nanosheets have mainly gained substantial attention due to their unique properties, such as direct bandgap and strong excitonic binding energy at room temperature. These are widely utilized in piezotronics, energy storage, photodetectors, light-emitting diodes, solar cells, gas sensors, and photocatalysis. Notably, the chemical properties and performances of ZnO nanosheets largely depend on the nano-structuring that can be regulated and controlled through modulating synthetic strategies. Two synthetic approaches, top-down and bottom-up, are mainly employed for preparing ZnO 2D nanomaterials. However, owing to better results in producing defect-free nanostructures, homogenous chemical composition, etc., the bottom-up approach is extensively used compared to the top-down method for preparing ZnO 2D nanosheets. This review presents a comprehensive study on designing and developing 2D ZnO nanomaterials, followed by accenting its potential applications. To begin with, various synthetic strategies and attributes of ZnO 2D nanosheets are discussed, followed by focusing on methodologies and reaction mechanisms. Then, their deliberation toward batteries, supercapacitors, electronics/optoelectronics, photocatalysis, sensing, and piezoelectronic platforms are further discussed. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities are featured based on its current development.

Fundamentals and Applications of ZnO-Nanowire-Based Piezotronics and Piezo-Phototronics

The piezotronic effect is a coupling effect of semiconductor and piezoelectric properties. The piezoelectric potential is used to adjust the p-n junction barrier width and Schottky barrier height to control carrier transportation. At present, it has been applied in the fields of sensors, human-machine interaction, and active flexible electronic devices. The piezo-phototronic effect is a three-field coupling effect of semiconductor, photoexcitation, and piezoelectric properties. The piezoelectric potential generated by the applied strain in the piezoelectric semiconductor controls the generation, transport, separation, and recombination of carriers at the metal-semiconductor contact or p-n junction interface, thereby improving optoelectronic devices performance, such as photodetectors, solar cells, and light-emitting diodes (LED). Since then, the piezotronics and piezo-phototronic effects have attracted vast research interest due to their ability to remarkably enhance the performance of electronic and optoelectronic devices. Meanwhile, ZnO has become an ideal material for studying the piezotronic and piezo-phototronic effects due to its simple preparation process and better biocompatibility. In this review, first, the preparation methods and structural characteristics of ZnO nanowires (NWs) with different doping types were summarized. Then, the theoretical basis of the piezotronic effect and its application in the fields of sensors, biochemistry, energy harvesting, and logic operations (based on piezoelectric transistors) were reviewed. Next, the piezo-phototronic effect in the performance of photodetectors, solar cells, and LEDs was also summarized and analyzed. In addition, modulation of the piezotronic and piezo-phototronic effects was compared and summarized for different materials, structural designs, performance characteristics, and working mechanisms' analysis. This comprehensive review provides fundamental theoretical and applied guidance for future research directions in piezotronics and piezo-phototronics for optoelectronic devices and energy harvesting.

Bioinspired Self-Powered Piezoresistive Sensors for Simultaneous Monitoring of Human Health and Outdoor UV Light Intensity

The exact fabrication of precise three-dimensional structures for piezoresistive sensors necessitates superior manufacturing methods or tooling, which are accompanied by time-consuming processes and the potential for environmental harm. Herein, we demonstrated a method for in situ synthesis of zinc oxide nanorod (ZnO NR) arrays on graphene-treated cotton and paper substrates and constructed highly sensitive, flexible, wearable, and chemically stable strain sensors. Based on the structure of pine trees and needles in nature, the hybrid sensing layer consisted of graphene-attached cotton or paper fibers and ZnO NRs, and the results showed a high sensitivity of 0.389, 0.095, and 0.029 kPa^-1 and an ultra-wide linear range of 0-100 kPa of this sensor under optimal conditions. Our study found that water absorption and swelling of graphene fibers and the associated reduction of pore size and growth of zinc oxide were detrimental to pressure sensor performance. A random line model was developed to examine the effects of different hydrothermal times on sensor performance. Meanwhile, pulse detection, respiration detection, speech recognition, and motion detection, including finger movements, walking, and throat movements, were used to show their practical application in human health activity monitoring. In addition, monolithically grown ZnO NRs on graphene cotton sheets had been integrated into a flexible sensing platform for outdoor UV photo-indication, which is, to our knowledge, the first successful case of an integrated UV photo-detector and motion sensor. Due to its excellent strain detection and UV detection abilities, these strategies are a step forward in developing wearable sensors that are cost-controllable and high-performance.

Recent Development of Multifunctional Sensors Based on Low-Dimensional Materials

With the demand for accurately recognizing human actions and environmental situations, multifunctional sensors are essential elements for smart applications in various emerging technologies, such as smart robots, human-machine interface, and wearable electronics. Low-dimensional materials provide fertile soil for multifunction-integrated devices. This review focuses on the multifunctional sensors for mechanical stimulus and environmental information, such as strain, pressure, light, temperature, and gas, which are fabricated from low-dimensional materials. The material characteristics, device architecture, transmission mechanisms, and sensing functions are comprehensively and systematically introduced. Besides multiple sensing functions, the integrated potential ability of supplying energy and expressing and storing information are also demonstrated. Some new process technologies and emerging research areas are highlighted. It is presented that optimization of device structures, appropriate material selection for synergy effect, and application of piezotronics and piezo-phototronics are effective approaches for constructing and improving the performance of multifunctional sensors. Finally, the current challenges and direction of future development are proposed.

Advanced Flexible Skin-Like Pressure and Strain Sensors for Human Health Monitoring

Recently, owing to their excellent flexibility and adaptability, skin-like pressure and strain sensors integrated with the human body have the potential for great prospects in healthcare. This review mainly focuses on the representative advances of the flexible pressure and strain sensors for health monitoring in recent years. The review consists of five sections. Firstly, we give a brief introduction of flexible skin-like sensors and their primary demands, and we comprehensively outline the two categories of design strategies for flexible sensors. Secondly, combining the typical sensor structures and their applications in human body monitoring, we summarize the recent development of flexible pressure sensors based on perceptual mechanism, the sensing component, elastic substrate, sensitivity and detection range. Thirdly, the main structure principles and performance characteristic parameters of noteworthy flexible strain sensors are summed up, namely the sensing mechanism, sensitive element, substrate, gauge factor, stretchability, and representative applications for human monitoring. Furthermore, the representations of flexible sensors with the favorable biocompatibility and self-driven properties are introduced. Finally, in conclusion, besides continuously researching how to enhance the flexibility and sensitivity of flexible sensors, their biocompatibility, versatility and durability should also be given sufficient attention, especially for implantable bioelectronics. In addition, the discussion emphasizes the challenges and opportunities of the above highlighted characteristics of novel flexible skin-like sensors.

Inner egg shell membrane based bio-compatible capacitive and piezoelectric function dominant self-powered pressure sensor array for smart electronic applications

Flexible pressure sensors play a key role as an interface between the mechanical movements and electrical stimuli in smart skins, soft robotics, and health monitoring systems. However, conventional pressure sensors face several challenges in terms of their bio-compatibility, higher cost, and complicated fabrication process. This paper demonstrates a novel 5 × 5 bio-compatible capacitive and self-powered piezoelectric pressure sensor array using natural inner egg shell membrane (IESM). The proposed sensor array is supported by two different sensing modes, which are capacitive and piezoelectric function dominant self-powered mode. The capacitive mode can detect both static and dynamic pressures and the piezoelectric function dominant self-powered mode can be adopted to detect the dynamic pressure applied on the device. The fabricated device with a sensing area of 4 mm2 offered the sensitivity of 37.54 ± 1.488 MPa-1 in the capacitive pressure sensing range from 0 to 0.05 MPa. The device showed the response (T res) and recovery time (T rec) of 60 ms and 45 ms, respectively. The device achieves the sensitivity of 16.93 V MPa-1 from the sensing range of 0 to 0.098 MPa in the self-powered pressure sensing. These results depict that the proposed pressure sensor array will ensure a promising role in green, wearable, and soft electronic applications.

Motion Detection Using Tactile Sensors Based on Pressure-Sensitive Transistor Arrays

In recent years, to develop more spontaneous and instant interfaces between a system and users, technology has evolved toward designing efficient and simple gesture recognition (GR) techniques. As a tool for acquiring human motion, a tactile sensor system, which converts the human touch signal into a single datum and executes a command by translating a bundle of data into a text language or triggering a preset sequence as a haptic motion, has been developed. The tactile sensor aims to collect comprehensive data on various motions, from the touch of a fingertip to large body movements. The sensor devices have different characteristics that are important for target applications. Furthermore, devices can be fabricated using various principles, and include piezoelectric, capacitive, piezoresistive, and field-effect transistor types, depending on the parameters to be achieved. Here, we introduce tactile sensors consisting of field-effect transistors (FETs). GR requires a process involving the acquisition of a large amount of data in an array rather than a single sensor, suggesting the importance of fabricating a tactile sensor as an array. In this case, an FET-type pressure sensor can exploit the advantages of active-matrix sensor arrays that allow high-array uniformity, high spatial contrast, and facile integration with electrical circuitry. We envision that tactile sensors based on FETs will be beneficial for GR as well as future applications, and these sensors will provide substantial opportunities for next-generation motion sensing systems.

Piezotronics and Piezo-phototronics of Third Generation Semiconductor Nanowires

With the fast development of nanoscience and nanotechnology in the last 30 years, semiconductor nanowires have been widely investigated in the areas of both electronics and optoelectronics. Among them, representatives of third generation semiconductors, such as ZnO and GaN, have relatively large spontaneous polarization along their longitudinal direction of the nanowires due to the asymmetric structure in their c-axis direction. Two-way or multiway couplings of piezoelectric, photoexcitation, and semiconductor properties have generated new research areas, such as piezotronics and piezo-phototronics. In this review, an in-depth discussion of the mechanisms and applications of nanowire-based piezotronics and piezo-phototronics is presented. Research on piezotronics and piezo-phototronics has drawn much attention since the effective manipulation of carrier transport, photoelectric properties, etc. through the application of simple mechanical stimuli and, conversely, since the design of new strain sensors based on the strain-induced change in semiconductor properties.

Engineering fluorescence intensity and electron concentration of monolayer MoS2 by forming heterostructures with semiconductor dots

In this work, novel 2D/0D hybrid heterostructures with facilely adjustable fluorescence intensity and carrier concentration are achieved by decorating monolayer MoS2 (1L-MoS2) flakes with semiconductor-dots (carbon-dots or ZnO-dots). By carbon-dot decoration, the fluorescence intensity of 1L-MoS2 is significantly suppressed due to the n-type doping effect of electron transfer from carbon-dots to 1L-MoS2. In contrast, 1L-MoS2 decorated with ZnO-dots exhibits remarkably enhanced photoluminescence, because of the effective p-type doping modulation of electron transfer from 1L-MoS2 to ZnO-dots. The different charge transfer directions lie in the distinct energy band alignment of the two heterostructures. Raman, time-resolved photoluminescence and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies prove the effective charge transfer between 1L-MoS2 and carbon-dots/ZnO-dots. Semi-quantitative estimations based on a mass-action-model demonstrate that the electron concentration in 1L-MoS2 can be controllably tuned from 1012 to 1014 cm-2via the p-type/n-type doping effect of these hybrid heterostructures.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation Performance by Fluid-Induced Piezoelectric Field

The introduction of a piezoelectric field has been proven a promising method to enhance photocatalytic activity by preventing photoelectron-hole recombination. However, the formation of a piezoelectric field requires additional mechanical force or high-frequency ultrasonic baths, which limits its potential application on industrial scale. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to design the catalyst that can harvest the discrete energy such as the fluid mechanical energy to form the electric field. Herein, PZT/TiO₂ catalyst with a core-shell configuration was prepared by a simple coating method. By collecting the mechanical energy of water, an internal piezoelectric field was induced. Under 800 rpm stirring, transient photocurrent measured on PZT/TiO₂ electrode is about 1.7 times higher than that of 400 rpm. Correspondingly, the photocatalytic degradation rate and mineralization efficiency of RhB, BPA, phenol, p-chlorophenol much improved, showing the promoting effect of piezoelectric field generated directly from harvesting the discrete fluid mechanical energy.

Zinc Oxide Nanostructures: From Chestnut Husk-Like Structures to Hollow Nanocages, Synthesis and Structure

Tailor-made nanostructured ZnO cages have been catalytically grown on Au and Pt films covering silicon substrates, by a controlled evaporation process, which means an accurate choice of temperatures, times, gas flows (He in the heating, He/air during the synthesis), and Au/Pt film thickness. The effect of the process parameters affecting the morphology and the structure of the obtained materials has been investigated by XRD analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) microscopies, and FTIR spectroscopies. In particular, the role of the synthesis temperature in affecting the size and shape of the obtained ZnO cages has been highlighted. It will be shown that by adopting higher temperatures, the protruding nanowhiskers several microns in length, covering the cages and exhibiting both basal and prismatic faces, change into very thin and narrow structures, with extended prismatic faces, prevailing with respect to the basal ones. At an even higher process temperature, the building up of Au particles aggregates inside and/or anchored to the walls of the hollow cages, without any evidence of elongated ZnO nanostructures will be highlighted. From FTIR spectra information on lattice modes of the investigated ZnO, materials have been obtained.

Balancing Bacteria-Osteoblast Competition through Selective Physical Puncture and Biofunctionalization of ZnO/Polydopamine/Arginine-Glycine-Aspartic Acid-Cysteine Nanorods

Bacterial infection and lack of bone tissue integration are two major concerns of orthopedic implants. In addition, osteoinductivity often decreases and toxicity may arise when antibacterial agents are introduced to increase the antibacterial ability. Here hybrid ZnO/polydopamine (PDA)/arginine-glycine-aspartic acid-cysteine (RGDC) nanorod (NR) arrays are designed and prepared on titanium (Ti) implants to not only enhance the osteoinductivity but also effectively kill bacteria simultaneously, which are ascribed to the selective physical puncture and the biofunctionalization of ZnO/PDA/RGDC nanorods during the competition between bacteria and osteoblasts. That is, owing to the much larger size of osteoblasts than bacteria, the hybrid NRs can puncture bacteria but not damage osteoblasts. Meanwhile, the cytocompatibility can be enhanced through the suppression of both reactive oxygen species and higher Zn²⁺ concentration by the covering of PDA and RGDC. The in vitro results confirm the selective puncture of the bacterial membrane and the better osteoinductivity. In vivo tests also show much higher antibacterial efficacy of the hybrid NRs with far less amounts of lobulated neutrophils and adherent bacteria in the surrounding tissues. In addition, the hybrid NRs also accelerate formation of new bone tissues (20.1% higher than pure Ti) and osteointegration between implants and newly formed tissues (32.0% higher than pure Ti) even in the presence of injected bacteria. This work provides a surface strategy for designing implants with desirable ability of osseointegration and infection prevention simultaneously, which will exhibit tremendous clinical potential in orthopedic and dental applications.
