Polarization Multiplexing of Fluorescent Emission Using Multiresonant Plasmonic Antennas

Strongly polarized color conversion of isotropic colloidal quantum dots coupled to fano resonances

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) offer high color purity essential to high-quality liquid crystal displays (LCDs), which enables unprecedented levels of color enrichment in LCD-TVs today. However, for LCDs requiring polarized backplane illumination in operation, highly polarized light generation using inherently isotropic QDs remains a fundamental challenge. Here, we show strongly polarized color conversion of isotropic QDs coupled to Fano resonances of v-grooved surfaces compatible with surface-normal LED illumination for next-generation QD-TVs. This architecture overcomes the critically oblique excitation of surface plasmon coupled emission by using v-shapes imprinted on the backlight unit (BLU). With isotropic QDs coated on the proposed v-BLU surface, we experimentally measured a far-field polarization contrast ratio of ∼10. Full electromagnetic solution shows Fano line-shape transmission in transverse magnetic polarization allowing for high transmission as an indication for forward-scattering configuration. Of these QDs coupled to the surface plasmon-polariton modes, we observed strong modifications in their emission kinetics revealed by time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy and via dipole orientations identified by back focal plane imaging. This collection of findings indicates conclusively that these isotropic QDs are forced to radiate in a linearly polarized state from the patterned planar surface under surface-normal excitation. For next-generation QD-TVs, the proposed polarized color-converting isotropic QDs on such v-BLUs can be deployed in bendable electronic displays.

Beam manipulation for quantum dot light-emitting diode with an Ag grating and a phase-gradient metasurface

The quantum dot (QD) light-emitting diode (LED) is a robust scheme for single photon source. However, the spontaneous emission of a QD LED has arbitrary directions and polarizations, which is disadvantage for photon collection and manipulation. We propose a QD LED integrated with an Ag grating and a phase-gradient metasurface. The circular patterned Ag grating is adopted to collimate the emission beam with right phase and improve its spatial coherence, therefore a phase-gradient metasurface can work for beam manipulation. The 10°, 20°, and 30° angle deflection as well as doughnut-pattern generation are demonstrated by numerical simulation. A small metasurface with the width of 6 µm can provide a collection efficiency of 25.9% at the deflection angle of 10°. Furthermore, only one single QD can be selected from a QD assembly with a low-density.

Polarization-based colour tuning of mixed colloidal quantum-dot thin films using direct patterning

Colloidal quantum-dots (cQDs) are finding increasingly widespread application in photonics and optoelectronics, providing high brightness and record-wide colour gamuts. However, the external quantum efficiencies in thin-film device architectures are still limited due to losses into waveguide modes and different strategies are being explored to promote the outcoupling of emission. Here we use a template-stripping-based direct-patterning strategy to fabricate linear gratings at the surface of cQD thin films. The linear gratings enhance optical outcoupling through Bragg scattering, yielding bright emission with a strong degree of linear polarization. By patterning linear gratings with different periodicities and orientations onto a film of mixed-colour cQDs, we demonstrate polarization-based active colour tuning of the thin-film emission.

All-dielectric multi-resonant bullseye antennas

Integrated devices that generate multiple optical resonances in the same volume can enhance on-chip nonlinear frequency generation, nonlinear spectroscopy, and quantum sensing. Here, we demonstrate circular Bragg antennas that exhibit multiple spatially overlapping, polarization-selective optical resonances. Using templated atomic layer deposition of TiO₂, these devices can be fabricated on arbitrary substrates, making them compatible with a wide range of nonlinear materials and sensing targets, and couple efficiently to underlying films. In this work, we detail the design, simulation, and fabrication of all-dielectric multi-resonant bullseye antennas and characterize their performance using polarized broadband reflection spectroscopy.

Integration of Colloidal Quantum Dots with Photonic Structures for Optoelectronic and Optical Devices

Colloidal quantum dot (QD), a solution-processable nanoscale optoelectronic building block with well-controlled light absorption and emission properties, has emerged as a promising material system capable of interacting with various photonic structures. Integrated QD/photonic structures have been successfully realized in many optical and optoelectronic devices, enabling enhanced performance and/or new functionalities. In this review, the recent advances in this research area are summarized. In particular, the use of four typical photonic structures, namely, diffraction gratings, resonance cavities, plasmonic structures, and photonic crystals, in modulating the light absorption (e.g., for solar cells and photodetectors) or light emission (e.g., for color converters, lasers, and light emitting diodes) properties of QD-based devices is discussed. A brief overview of QD-based passive devices for on-chip photonic circuit integration is also presented to provide a holistic view on future opportunities for QD/photonic structure-integrated optoelectronic systems.

Photonic Rashba effect from quantum emitters mediated by a Berry-phase defective photonic crystal

Heterostructures combining a thin layer of quantum emitters and planar nanostructures enable custom-tailored photoluminescence in an integrated fashion. Here, we demonstrate a photonic Rashba effect from valley excitons in a WSe₂ monolayer, which is incorporated into a photonic crystal slab with geometric phase defects, that is, into a Berry-phase defective photonic crystal. This phenomenon of spin-split dispersion in momentum space arises from a coherent geometric phase pickup assisted by the Berry-phase defect mode. The valley excitons effectively interact with the defects for site-controlled excitation, photoluminescence enhancement and spin-dependent manipulation. Specifically, the spin-dependent branches of photoluminescence in momentum space originate from valley excitons with opposite helicities and evidence the valley separation at room temperature. To further demonstrate the versatility of the Berry-phase defective photonic crystals, we use this concept to separate opposite spin states of quantum dot emission. This spin-enabled manipulation of quantum emitters may enable highly efficient metasurfaces for customized planar sources with spin-polarized directional emission.

Dual-Wavelength Lasing in Quantum-Dot Plasmonic Lattice Lasers

Arrays of metallic particles patterned on a substrate have emerged as a promising design for on-chip plasmonic lasers. In past examples of such devices, the periodic particles provided feedback at a single resonance wavelength, and organic dye molecules were used as the gain material. Here, we introduce a flexible template-based fabrication method that allows a broader design space for Ag particle-array lasers. Instead of dye molecules, we integrate colloidal quantum dots (QDs), which offer better photostability and wavelength tunability. Our fabrication approach also allows us to easily adjust the refractive index of the substrate and the QD-film thickness. Exploiting these capabilities, we demonstrate not only single-wavelength lasing but dual-wavelength lasing via two distinct strategies. First, by using particle arrays with rectangular lattice symmetries, we obtain feedback from two orthogonal directions. The two output wavelengths from this laser can be selected individually using a linear polarizer. Second, by adjusting the QD-film thickness, we use higher-order transverse waveguide modes in the QD film to obtain dual-wavelength lasing at normal and off-normal angles from a symmetric square array. We thus show that our approach offers various design possibilities to tune the laser output.

Quantifying single plasmonic nanostructure far-fields with interferometric and polarimetric k-space microscopy

Optically resonant nanoantennae are key building blocks for metasurfaces, nanosensors, and nanophotonic light sources due to their ability to control the amplitude, phase, directivity, and polarization of scattered light. Here, we report an experimental technique for the full recovery of all degrees of freedom encoded in the far-field radiated by a single nanostructure using a high-NA Fourier microscope equipped with digital off-axis holography. This method enables full decomposition of antenna-physics in its multipole contributions and gives full access to the orbital and spin angular momentum properties of light scattered by single nano-objects. Our results demonstrate these capabilities through a quantitative assessment of the purity of the "selection rules" for orbital angular momentum transfer by plasmonic spiral nanostructures.
