Self-Assembled Chiral Photonic Crystals from a Colloidal Helix Racemate

Transformable Superisostatic Crystals Self-Assembled from Segment Colloidal Rods

Transformable mechanical structures can switch between distinct mechanical states. Whether this kind of structure can be self-assembled from simple building blocks at microscale is a question to be answered. In this work, we propose a self-assembly strategy for these structures based on a nematic monolayer of segmented colloidal rods with lateral cutting. By using Monte Carlo simulation, we find that rods with different cutting degrees can self-assemble into different crystals characterized by bond coordination z that varies from 3 to 6. Among these, we identify a transformable superisostatic structure with pgg symmetry and redundant bonds (z = 5). We show that this structure can support either soft bulk modes or soft edge modes depending on its Poisson's ratio, which can be tuned from positive to negative through a uniform soft deformation. We also prove that the bulk soft modes are associated with states of self-stress along the direction of zero strain during uniform soft deformation. The self-assembled transformable structures may act as mechanical metamaterials with potential applications in micromechanical engineering.

Chiral photonic crystals from sphere packing

Inspired by recent developments in self-assembled chiral nanostructures, we have explored the possibility of using spherical particles packed in cylinders as building blocks for chiral photonic crystals. In particular, we focused on an array of parallel cylinders arranged in a perfect triangular lattice, each containing an identical densest sphere packing structure. Despite the non-chirality of both the spheres and cylinders, the self-assembled system can exhibit chirality due to spontaneous symmetry breaking during the assembly process. We have investigated the circular dichroism effects of the system and have found that, for both perfect electric conductor and dielectric spheres, the system can display dual-polarization photonic band gaps for circularly polarized light at normal incidence along the axis of the helix. We have also examined how the polarization band gap size depends on the dielectric constant of the spheres and the packing fraction of the cylinders. Furthermore, we have explored the effects of non-ideality and found that the polarization gap persists even in the presence of imperfections and heterogeneity. Our study suggests that a cluster formed by spheres self-assembling inside parallel cylinders with appropriate material parameters can be a promising approach to creating chiral photonic crystals.

A Review on Self-Assembly of Colloidal Nanoparticles into Clusters, Patterns, and Films: Emerging Synthesis Techniques and Applications

The colloidal synthesis of functional nanoparticles has gained tremendous scientific attention in the last decades. In parallel to these advancements, another rapidly growing area is the self-assembly or self-organization of these colloidal nanoparticles. First, the organization of nanoparticles into ordered structures is important for obtaining functional interfaces that extend or even amplify the intrinsic properties of the constituting nanoparticles at a larger scale. The synthesis of large-scale interfaces using complex or intricately designed nanostructures as building blocks, requires highly controllable self-assembly techniques down to the nanoscale. In certain cases, for example, when dealing with plasmonic nanoparticles, the assembly of the nanoparticles further enhances their properties by coupling phenomena. In other cases, the process of self-assembly itself is useful in the final application such as in sensing and drug delivery, amongst others. In view of the growing importance of this field, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent developments in the field of nanoparticle self-assembly and their applications. For clarity, the self-assembled nanostructures are classified into two broad categories: finite clusters/patterns, and infinite films. Different state-of-the-art techniques to obtain these nanostructures are discussed in detail, before discussing the applications where the self-assembly significantly enhances the performance of the process.

Rigidity Dictates Spontaneous Helix Formation of Thermoresponsive Colloidal Chains in Poor Solvent

The formation of helical motifs typically requires specific directional interactions. Here, we demonstrate that isotropic interparticle attraction can drive self-assembly of colloidal chains into thermo-reversible helices, for chains with a critical level of backbone rigidity. We prepare thermoresponsive colloidal chains by cross-linking PNIPAM microgel-coated polystyrene colloids ("monomers"), aligned in an AC electric field. We control the chain rigidity by varying cross-linking time. Above the LCST of PNIPAM, there is an effective attraction between monomers so that the colloidal chains are in a bad solvent. On heating, the chains decrease in size. For the most rigid chains, the decrease is modest and is not accompanied by a change in shape. Much less rigid chains form relatively compact structures, resulting in a large increase in the local monomer density. Unusually, chains with intermediate rigidity spontaneously assemble into helical structures. The chain helicity increases with temperature and plateaus above the collapse transition temperature of the microgel particles. We simulate a minimal model that captures the spontaneous emergence of the helical conformations of the polymeric chain and provides insight into this shape transition. Our work suggests that a purely mechanical instability for semiflexible filaments can drive helix formation, without the need to invoke directional interactions.

Softness-Enhanced Self-Assembly of Pyrochlore- and Perovskite-like Colloidal Photonic Crystals from Triblock Janus Particles

It remains extremely challenging to build three-dimensional photonic crystals with complete photonic bandgaps by simple and experimentally realizable colloidal building blocks. Here, we demonstrate that particle softness can enhance both the self-assembly of pyrochlore- and perovskite-like lattice structures from simple deformable triblock Janus colloids and their photonic bandgap performances. Dynamics simulation results show that the region of stability of pyrochlore lattices can be greatly expanded by appropriately increasing softness, and the perovskite lattices are unexpectedly obtained at enough high softness. Photonic calculations show that the direct pyrochlore lattices formed from overlapping soft triblock Janus particles exhibit even larger photonic bandgaps than the ideal nonoverlapping pyrochlore lattice, and proper overlap arising from softness can also dramatically improve the photonic properties of the inverse pyrochlore and perovskite lattices. Our study offers a new and feasible self-assembly path toward three-dimensional photonic crystals with large and robust photonic bandgaps.

Self-Assembly of Isostatic Self-Dual Colloidal Crystals

Self-dual structures whose dual counterparts are themselves possess unique hidden symmetry, beyond the description of classical spatial symmetry groups. Here we propose a strategy based on a nematic monolayer of attractive half-cylindrical colloids to self-assemble these exotic structures. This system can be seen as a 2D system of semidisks. By using Monte Carlo simulations, we discover two isostatic self-dual crystals, i.e., an unreported crystal with pmg space-group symmetry and the twisted kagome crystal. For the pmg crystal approaching the critical point, we find the double degeneracy of the full phononic spectrum at the self-dual point and the merging of two tilted Weyl nodes into one critically tilted Dirac node. The latter is "accidentally" located on the high-symmetry line. The formation of this unconventional Dirac node is due to the emergence of the critical flatbands at the self-dual point, which are linear combinations of "finite-frequency" floppy modes. These modes can be understood as mechanically coupled self-dual rhombus chains vibrating in some unique uncoupled ways. Our work paves the way for designing and fabricating self-dual materials with exotic mechanical or phononic properties.

Unexpected Dependence of Photonic Band Gap Size on Randomness in Self-Assembled Colloidal Crystals

Using computer simulations, we explore how thermal noise-induced randomness in a self-assembled photonic crystal affects its photonic band gaps (PBGs). We consider a two-dimensional photonic crystal composed of a self-assembled array of parallel dielectric hard rods of infinite length with circular or square cross section. We find that PBGs can exist over a large range of intermediate packing densities and the largest band gap does not always appear at the highest packing density studied. Remarkably, for rods with square cross section at intermediate packing densities, the transverse magnetic (TM) band gap of the self-assembled (i.e., thermal) system can be larger than that of identical rods arranged in a perfect square lattice. By considering hollow rods, we find the band gap of transverse electric modes can be substantially increased while that of TM modes show no obvious improvement over solid rods. Our study suggests that particle shape and internal structure can be used to engineer the PBG of a self-assembled system despite the positional and orientational randomness arising from thermal noise.

Customized Chiral Colloids

This contribution describes a synthetic strategy for the fabrication of multicomponent colloidal "molecules" with controllable complex morphologies and compositionally distinct lobes. Using 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TPM) as the building block, the methodology enables a scalable bulk synthesis of customized chiral colloidal particles with geometric and compositional chirality by a sequential seeded growth method. The synthetic protocol presents a versatile platform for constructing colloidal molecules with multiple components having customized shapes and functionalities, with the potential to impact the design of chromatic patchy particles, colloidal swimmers, and chiral optical materials, as well as informing programmable assembly.

Self-Assembled Binary Photonic Crystals under the Active Confinement and Their Light Trapping

The self-assembly of oppositely charged colloidal ellipsoids and spheres under active confinement is first proposed to achieve long-range ordered photonic crystals. Compared with the conventional passive confinement, a characteristic of the active confinement is that boundaries are movable. Our Brownian dynamics simulations show that dynamic steady structures, similar to quasi-2D colloidal crystals, can be obtained under the strong confinement when the two boundaries periodically oscillate together. The in-plane structures can be regulated by changing the charge ratio of the two kinds of particles. These dynamic steady structures are determined by the minimum electrostatic energy with the aid of increased mobility of confined particles, which are not available in equilibrium. Numerical simulations verify that light can be perfectly confined in this dielectric binary photonic slab without any radiation, which corresponds to a typical optical bound state with divergent lifetime and ultrasharp spectral profile. Given the changeable geometry of this photonic slab, the trapped optical field might be applicable to enhanced light-matter interactions. In addition, for thicker layers, layer-by-layer ordered structures occur spontaneously, driven by the active confinement, while no global order occurs in the passive confinement. Our results show that the boundary motion can become an important factor affecting self-assembled structure and function.

Inverse design of self-assembling colloidal crystals with omnidirectional photonic bandgaps

Open colloidal lattices possessing omnidirectional photonic bandgaps in the visible or near-visible regime are attractive optical materials the realization of which has remained elusive. We report the use of an inverse design strategy termed landscape engineering that rationally sculpts the free energy self-assembly landscape using evolutionary algorithms to discover anisotropic patchy colloids capable of spontaneously assembling pyrochlore and cubic diamond lattices possessing complete photonic bandgaps. We validate the designs in computer simulations to demonstrate the defect-free formation of these lattices via a two-stage hierarchical assembly mechanism. Our approach demonstrates a principled strategy for the inverse design of self-assembling colloids for the bottom-up fabrication of desired crystal lattices.

Self-assembled multi-layer simple cubic photonic crystals of oppositely charged colloids in confinement

Designing and fabricating self-assembled open colloidal crystals have become one major direction in the soft matter community because of many promising applications associated with open colloidal crystals. However, most of the self-assembled crystals found in experiments are not open but close-packed. Here, by using computer simulation, we systematically investigate the self-assembly of oppositely charged colloidal hard spheres confined between two parallel hard walls, and we find that the confinement can stabilize multi-layer NaCl-like (simple cubic) open crystals. The maximal number of layers of stable NaCl-like crystals increases with decreasing inverse screening length. More interestingly, at finite low temperature, the large vibrational entropy can stabilize some multi-layer NaCl-like crystals against the most energetically favoured close-packed crystals. In the parameter range studied, we find up to 4-layer NaCl-like crystals to be stable in confinement. Our photonic calculation shows that the inverse 4-layer NaCl-like crystal can already reproduce the large photonic band gaps of the bulk simple cubic crystal, which open in the low frequency range with a low dielectric contrast. This suggests new possibilities of using confined colloidal systems to fabricate open crystalline materials with novel photonic properties.

The control of the homochirality of helical structures formed in achiral systems is of great interest as it is helpful for understanding the origin of homochirality in life.

Ion transport through a nanoporous C2N membrane: the effect of electric field and layer number

Using all-atom molecular dynamic simulations, we show that a monolayer C₂N membrane possesses higher permeability and excellent ion selectivity, and that multilayer C₂N membranes have promising potential for water desalination.
