A Reduction in Particle Size Generally Causes Body-Centered-Cubic Metals to Expand but Face-Centered-Cubic Metals to Contract

Structure-driven tuning of catalytic properties of core-shell nanostructures

The annual increase in demand for renewable energy is driving the development of catalysis-based technologies that generate, store and convert clean energy by splitting and forming chemical bonds. Thanks to efforts over the last two decades, great progress has been made in the use of core-shell nanostructures to improve the performance of metallic catalysts. The successful preparation and application of a large number of bimetallic core-shell nanocrystals demonstrates the wide range of possibilities they offer and suggests further advances in this field. Here, we have reviewed recent advances in the synthesis and study of core-shell nanostructures that are promising for catalysis. Particular attention has been paid to the structural tuning of the catalytic properties of core-shell nanostructures and to theoretical methods capable of describing their catalytic properties in order to efficiently search for new catalysts with desired properties. We have also identified the most promising areas of research in this field, in terms of experimental and theoretical studies, and in terms of promising materials to be studied.

Conjugated dual size effect of core-shell particles synergizes bimetallic catalysis

Core-shell bimetallic nanocatalysts have attracted long-standing attention in heterogeneous catalysis. Tailoring both the core size and shell thickness to the dedicated geometrical and electronic properties for high catalytic reactivity is important but challenging. Here, taking Au@Pd core-shell catalysts as an example, we disclose by theory that a large size of Au core with a two monolayer of Pd shell is vital to eliminate undesired lattice contractions and ligand destabilizations for optimum benzyl alcohol adsorption. A set of Au@Pd/SiO₂ catalysts with various core sizes and shell thicknesses are precisely fabricated. In the benzyl alcohol oxidation reaction, we find that the activity increases monotonically with the core size but varies nonmontonically with the shell thickness, where a record-high activity is achieved on a Au@Pd catalyst with a large core size of 6.8 nm and a shell thickness of ~2-3 monolayers. These findings highlight the conjugated dual particle size effect in bimetallic catalysis.

Synthesis and multi-scale properties of PuO2 nanoparticles: recent advances and open questions

Due to the increased attention given to actinide nanomaterials, the question of their structure-property relationship is on the spotlight of recent publications. Plutonium oxide (PuO₂) particularly plays a central role in nuclear energetics and a comprehensive knowledge about its properties when nanosizing is of paramount interest to understand its behaviour in environmental migration schemes but also for the development of advanced nuclear energy systems underway. The element plutonium further stimulates the curiosity of scientists due to the unique physical and chemical properties it exhibits around the periodic table. PuO₂ crystallizes in the fluorite structure of the face-centered cubic system for which the properties can be significantly affected when shrinking. Identifying the formation mechanism of PuO₂ nanoparticles, their related atomic, electronic and crystalline structures, and their reactivity in addition to their nanoscale properties, appears to be a fascinating and challenging ongoing topic, whose recent advances are discussed in this review.

Binary and ternary Pt-based clusters grown in a plasma multimagnetron-based gas aggregation source: electrocatalytic evaluation towards glycerol oxidation

Platinum (Pt), platinum-bismuth (PtBi), platinum-copper (PtCu) and platinum-bismuth-copper (PtCuBi) clusters were grown in a gas aggregation source (GAS) equipped with three in-plane plasma magnetrons located in a single region of the gas aggregation zone. The X-ray diffraction results have shown that PtCu clusters form alloys as the decrease of the lattice parameter occurs when the Cu atomic content increases. PtBi clusters do not form alloys, but the presence of secondary Bi oxide phases was detected. Scanning transmission electron microscope mapping images revealed that simultaneously adding Bi and Cu to Pt leads to PtCu alloyed clusters decorated with Bi or CuBi species on the surface. The electrochemical results indicated that the shell might be composed of a metastable CuBi phase. Electrochemical measurements have shown that the addition of Bi or Cu to the Pt clusters enhances the catalytic activity for glycerol oxidation by decreasing the oxidation onset potential.

Whole pair distribution function modeling: the bridging of Bragg and Debye scattering theories

Microstructure-based design of materials requires an atomic level understanding of the mechanisms underlying structure-dependent properties. Methods for analyzing either the traditional diffraction profile or the pair distribution function (PDF) differ in how the information is accessed and in the approximations usually applied. Any variation of structural and microstructural features over the whole sample affects the Bragg peaks as well as any diffuse scattering. Accuracy of characterization relies, therefore, on the reliability of the analysis methods. Methods based on Bragg's law investigate the diffraction peaks in the intensity plot as distinct pieces of information. This approach reaches a limitation when dealing with disorder scenarios that do not conform to such a peak-by-peak basis. Methods based on the Debye scattering equation (DSE) are, otherwise, well suited to evaluate the scattering from a disordered phase but the structure information is averaged over short-range distances usually accessed by experiments. Moreover, statistical reliability is usually sacrificed to recover some of the computing-efficiency loss compared with traditional line-profile-analysis methods. Here, models based on Bragg's law are used to facilitate the computation of a whole PDF and then model powder-scattering data via the DSE. Models based on Bragg's law allow the efficient solution of the dispersion of a crystal's properties in a powder sample with statistical reliability, and the PDF provides the flexibility of the DSE. The whole PDF is decomposed into the independent directional components, and the number of atom pairs separated by a given distance is statistically estimated using the common-volume functions. This approach overcomes the need for an atomistic model of the material sample and the computation of billions of pair distances. The results of this combined method are in agreement with the explicit solution of the DSE although the computing efficiency is comparable with that of methods based on Bragg's law. Most importantly, the method exploits the strengths and different sensitivities of the Bragg and Debye theories.

Investigation of Ni–Fe–Cu-Layered Double Hydroxide Catalysts in Steam Reforming of Toluene as a Model Compound of Biomass Tar

This work focused on the synthesis of a catalyst based on layered double hydroxides with a molar cation concentration Ni/Cu/Fe/Mg/Al of 30/5/5/40/20 and its performance in the steam reforming of toluene as a model compound of biomass tar. Its performance at different temperatures (500, 600, 700, 800, and 900 °C) and steam/carbon molar ratios (S/C ratios) (1, 2, 4, 6, 8) was studied. The contact time used was 0.32 g h mol−1. The catalyst obtained allowed us to reach 98–99.87% gas conversion of toluene with a low carbon deposition on catalyst surface (1.4 wt %) at 800 °C and S/C = 4. In addition, conversions in the range of 600–700 °C were higher than 80% and 90%, respectively, and the type of carbon deposited on the catalyst was found to be filamentous, which did not significantly reduce the performance of the catalyst.
