Self-Healing Label Materials Based on Photo-Cross-Linkable Polymeric Films with Dynamic Surface Structures

Chemically and geometrically programmable photoreactive polymers for transformational humidity-sensitive full-color devices

Humidity-sensitive structural color has emerged as a promising technology due to its numerous advantages that include fast response, intuitiveness, stand-alone capability, non-toxicity, as well as resistance to thermal and chemical stresses. Despite immense technological advancements, these structural colors lack the ability to present independent multiple images through transformation. Herein, we present an approach to address this constraint by introducing a chemically and geometrically programmable photoreactive polymer which allows preparation of transformational humidity-sensitive full-color devices. Utilizing azido-grafted carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-N3) allows adjustments in swelling properties based on the grafting ratio (Γ) of azido groups upon UV-induced crosslinking. Also, the distinctive photo-curability of the polymer enables precise geometric control to achieve vivid colors in combination with disordered plasmonic cavities. Our work culminates in the development of an advanced anti-counterfeiting multiplexer capable of displaying different full-color images with variation in humidity levels. The showcased color displays signify pivotal breakthroughs in tunable optical technologies, illustrating how chemical modifications in hydrogels provides additional degrees of freedom in the design of advanced optical devices.

Imidazole functionalized photo-crosslinked aliphatic polycarbonate drug-eluting coatings on zinc alloys for osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and bacteriostasis in bone regeneration

Zinc (Zn) alloys have demonstrated significant potential in healing critical-sized bone defects. However, the clinical application of Zn alloys implants is still hindered by challenges including excessive release of zinc ions (Zn2+), particularly in the early stage of implantation, and absence of bio-functions related to complex bone repair processes. Herein, a biodegradable aliphatic polycarbonate drug-eluting coating was fabricated on zinc-lithium (Zn-Li) alloys to inhibit Zn2+ release and enhance the osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and bacteriostasis of Zn alloys. Specifically, the photo-curable aliphatic polycarbonates were co-assembled with simvastatin and deposited onto Zn alloys to produce a drug-loaded coating, which was crosslinked by subsequent UV light irradiation. During the 60 days long-term immersion test, the coating showed distinguished stable drug release and Zn2+ release inhibition properties. Benefiting from the regulated release of Zn2+ and simvastatin, the coating facilitated the adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells, as well as the migration and tube formation of EA.hy926 cells. Astonishingly, the coating also showed remarkable antibacterial properties against both S. aureus and E. coli. The in vivo rabbit critical-size femur bone defects model demonstrated that the drug-eluting coating could efficiently promote new bone formation and the expression of platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (CD31) and osteocalcin (OCN). The enhancement of osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and bacteriostasis is achieved by precisely controlling of the released Zn2+ at an appropriate level, as well as the stable release profile of simvastatin. This tailored aliphatic polycarbonate drug-eluting coating provides significant potential for clinical applications of Zn alloys implants.

Tristate Photonic Crystal Film with Structural, Fluorescent, and Up-Conversion Luminescent Color for Multilevel Anticounterfeiting

Counterfeit items are growing worldwide, affecting the global economy and human health. Anticounterfeiting tags based on a physical microstructure or chemical materials have enjoyed long-term commercial success due to their visualization and inexpensive production. However, conventional anticounterfeiting tags can be readily imitated. Herein, we have overcome this limitation by assembling colloidal nanospheres and two luminescent micromaterials into a composited photonic crystal (PhC) and achieved massive scale-up fabrication of multilevel anticounterfeiting PhC films in just several minutes of thermal rolling. The fabricated PhC film exhibits three optical states, including angle-dependent structural color (reflectivity = 66%) under white light, emits green light under 980 nm light, and emits red light under ultraviolet light. Multilevel anticounterfeiting colorful images were obtained by further use of masking templates, which integrate colors from both physically colored microstructures and chemical luminescent materials. Besides, the thermal-rolling process also shows excellent feasibility for assembling microunits with different sizes into high-quality functional PhC films.

Microporous Polyelectrolyte Complexes by Hydroplastic Foaming

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) have emerged as an attractive category of materials for their water processability and some similarities to natural biopolymers. Herein, we employ the intrinsic hydroplasticity of PEC materials to enable the generation of porous structures with the aid of gas foaming. Such foamable materials are fabricated by simply mixing polycation, polyanion, and a UV-initiated chemical foaming agent in an aqueous solution, followed by molding into thin films. The gas foaming of the PEC films can be achieved upon exposure to UV illumination under water, where the films are plasticized and the gaseous products from the photolysis of foaming agents afford the formation, expanding, and merging of numerous bubbles. The porosity and morphology of the resulting porous films can be customized by tuning film composition, foaming conditions, and especially the degree of plasticizing effect, illustrating the high flexibility of this hydroplastic foaming method. Due to the rapid initiation of gas foaming, the present method enables the formation of porous structures via an instant one-step process, much more efficient than those existing strategies for porous PEC materials. More importantly, such a pore-forming mechanism might be extended to other hydroplastic materials (e.g., biopolymers) and help to yield hydroplasticity-based processing strategies.

Advances and Challenges of Self-Healing Elastomers: A Mini Review

In the last few decades, self-healing polymeric materials have been widely investigated because they can heal the damages spontaneously and thereby prolong their service lifetime. Many ingenious synthetic procedures have been developed for fabricating self-healing polymers with high performance. This mini review provides an impressive summary of the self-healing polymers with fast self-healing speed, which exhibits an irreplaceable role in many intriguing applications, such as flexible electronics. After a brief introduction to the development of self-healing polymers, we divide the development of self-healing polymers into five stages through the perspective of their research priorities at different periods. Subsequently, we elaborated the underlying healing mechanism of polymers, including the self-healing origins, the influencing factors, and direct evidence of healing at nanoscopic level. Following this, recent advance in realizing the fast self-healing speed of polymers through physical and chemical approaches is extensively overviewed. In particular, the methodology for balancing the mechanical strength and healing ability in fast self-healing elastomers is summarized. We hope that it could afford useful information for research people in promoting the further technical development of new strategies and technologies to prepare the high performance self-healing elastomers for advanced applications.

Periodic Stratified Porous Structures in Dynamic Polyelectrolyte Films Through Standing-Wave Optical Crosslinking for Structural Color

Periodic porous structures have been introduced into functional films to meet the requirements of various applications. Though many approaches have been developed to generate desired structures in polymeric films, few of them can effectively and dynamically achieve periodic porous structures. Here, a facile way is proposed to introduce periodic stratified porous structures into polyelectrolyte films. A photo-crosslinkable polyelectrolyte film of poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) and photoreactive poly(acrylic acid) derivative (PAA-N3 ) is prepared by layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly. Stratified crosslinking of the PEI/PAA-N3 film is generated basing on standing-wave optics. The periodic stratified porous structure is constructed by forming pores in noncrosslinked regions in the film. Thanks to the dynamic mobility of polyelectrolytes, this structural controlment can be repeated several times. The size of pores corresponding to the layer spacing of the film contributes to the structural colors. Furthermore, structural color patterns are fabricated in the film by selective photo-crosslinking using photomasks. Although the large-scale structural controlment in thick (micron-scale and above) films needs to be explored further, this work highlights the periodic structural controlment in polymeric films and thus presents an approach for application potentials in sensor, detection, and ink-free printing.

Acid- and Thiol-Cleavable Multifunctional Codelivery Hydrogel: Fabrication and Investigation of Antimicrobial and Anticancer Properties

Hydrogels serving as a drug carrier was realized by entrapping small-sized drug molecules within their cross-linked interstitial networks. After covering the targeted location, hydrogels interact with the physiological fluids and swell, resulting in an increased interspace between networks for the outside diffusion of drugs. However, inevitable in vivo inflammatory responses or bacterial infection on the implant materials and persistent cargo release are still challenging. Herein, we report the fabrication of dual-responsive hydrogels based on acid-sensitive poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) derivative (PEI(-COOH/-vinyl)), thiol-responsive camptothecin prodrug monomer (CPTM), and hydrophilic oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (OEGMA) by a conventional radical polymerization. Curcumin was then solubilized into the hydrogels to endow them with antimicrobial and cancer resistance properties. The in vitro experiments exhibited sustained hydrogel dissolution and CPT release in a simulated physiological environment. The antimicrobial and cytotoxicity tests of drug-loaded hydrogels using methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains and HeLa cancer cell lines, respectively, indicated that the hydrogels possessed efficient antimicrobial effects and could successfully inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Dynamic Porous Pattern through Controlling Noncovalent Interactions in Polyelectrolyte Film for Sequential and Regional Encapsulation

Inspired by nature, many functional surfaces have been developed with special structures in biology, chemistry, and materials. Many research studies have been focused on the preparation of surfaces with static structure. Achieving dynamical manipulation of surface structure is desired but still a great challenge. Herein, a polyelectrolyte film capable of regional and reversible changes in the microporous structure is presented. Our proposal is based on the combination of azobenzene (Azo) π-π stacking and electrostatic interaction, which could be affected respectively by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and water plasticization, to tune the mobility of polyelectrolyte chains. The porous patterns can be obtained after regional ultraviolet irradiation and acid treatment. Owing to the reversibility of Azo π-π stacking and electrostatic interaction, the patterns can be repeatedly created and erased in the polyelectrolyte film made by layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly of poly(ethyleneimine)-azo and poly(acrylic acid). Furthermore, through two rounds of porous pattern formation and erasure, different functional species can be loaded separately and confined regionally within the film, showing potential applications in the functional surface. This work highlights the coordination of two noncovalent interactions in thin films for regional and reversible controlling its structure, opening a window for more in-depth development of functional surfaces.

Combining Top-Down and Bottom-Up with Photodegradable Layer-by-Layer Films

Layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly of polymer coatings is a bottom-up fabrication technique with broad applicability across a wide range of materials and applications that require control over interfacial properties. While most LbL coatings are chemically uniform in directions both tangent and perpendicular to their substrate, control over the properties of surface coatings as a function of space can enhance their function. To contribute to this rapidly advancing field, our group has focused on the top-down spatiotemporal control possible with photochemically reactive LbL coatings, harnessed through charge-shifting polyelectrolytes enabled by photocleavable ester pendants. The photolysis of the photocleavable esters degrades LbL films containing these polyelectrolytes. The chemical structures of the photocleavable groups dictate the wavelengths responsible for disrupting these coatings, ranging from ultraviolet to near-infrared in our work. In addition, spatially segregating reactive groups into "compartments" within LbL films has enabled us to fabricate reactive free-standing polymer films and multiheight photopatterned coatings. Overall, by combining bottom-up and top-down approaches, photoreactive LbL films enable precise control over the interfacial properties of polymer and composite coatings.

Superhydrophobic Foams with Chemical- and Mechanical-Damage-Healing Abilities Enabled by Self-Healing Polymers

The fabrication of superhydrophobic materials capable of spontaneously healing both chemical and mechanical damages at ambient conditions has been a great challenge but highly desired. In this study, we propose that a self-healing hydrophobic polymer can be used to induce self-healing in a superhydrophobic material. As a demonstration, stable and porous self-healing superhydrophobic foams are fabricated by casting a mixture of healable poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-based polyurea, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MCNTs), and table salt, followed by solvent evaporation and removal of the salt template. The PDMS-based polyurea is able to heal mechanical damage by reforming hydrogen bonds and can also reverse chemical damage through surface reorganization. Thus, the chemically and mechanically damaged foams can spontaneously restore their superhydrophobicity and structural integrity at ambient conditions. Moreover, because of the satisfactory photothermal conversion of MCNTs, the temperature of the self-healing superhydrophobic foams can rapidly reach 60 °C under sunlight, which greatly increases the healing speed and healing efficiency of the foam.

One-Step Synthesis of Healable Weak-Polyelectrolyte-Based Hydrogels with High Mechanical Strength, Toughness, and Excellent Self-Recovery

Excellent self-recovery is critically important for soft materials such as hydrogels and shape memory polymers. In this work, weak-polyelectrolyte-based hydrogels with high mechanical strength, toughness, healability, and excellent self-recovery are fabricated by one-step polymerization of acrylic acid and poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate in the presence of oppositely charged branched polyethylenimine. The synergy of electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding interactions and the in situ formed polyelectrolyte complex nanoparticles endow the hydrogels with a tensile strength of ∼4.7 MPa, strain at break of ∼1200%, and toughness of ∼32.6 MJ m^-3. The hydrogels can recover from an ∼300% strain to their initial state within 10 min at room temperature without any external assistance. Moreover, the hydrogels can heal from physical cut at room temperature and exhibit a prominent shape-memory performance with rapid shape recovery speed and high shape-fixing and shape-recovery ratios.

Macroscopic supramolecular assembly of rigid hydrogels assisted by a flexible spacing coating

To address the difficult challenge of realizing macroscopic supramolecular assembly (MSA) of high-modulus hydrogels, we propose a strategy of introducing a flexible spacing coating to improve the surface compliance for efficient MSA, which holds promise to develop versatile MSA methods for fabricating hydrogel-based tissue scaffolds, and to provide insight into the MSA mechanism.

Controlling Structural Transformation of Polyelectrolyte Films for Spatially Encapsulating Functional Species

Although many approaches have been developed to encapsulate functional species into polyelectrolyte films, few of them can effectively control the final distribution of these ones. Herein, a facile strategy is proposed to spatially control the encapsulation of guest species by locally regulating the structural transformation of polyelectrolyte films. Patterned porosity is created within a film by cross-linking it selectively and then immersing it in an acidic solution. These porous regions can exhibit significantly different properties from other regions, including the ability to wick solution, a greater retention of guest species, and the capability of structural transformation. After loading guest species, the porous structures can be eliminated at saturated humidity to encapsulate the guest species into the film, leading to their patterned distribution across the film. Based on this method, various guest species, ranging from fluorescent dyes to nanoparticles, can be locally encapsulated into polyelectrolyte film, forming distinct patterns of arbitrary shapes and sizes and thus paving the way for further applications.
