Graphene as an Ideal Buffer Layer for the Growth of High-Quality Ultrathin Cr2O3 Layers on Ni(111)

High-Performance Supercapacitors Using Compact Carbon Hydrogels Derived from Polybenzoxazine

Polybenzoxazine (PBz) aerogels hold immense potential, but their conventional production methods raise environmental and safety concerns. This research addresses this gap by proposing an eco-friendly approach for synthesizing high-performance carbon derived from polybenzoxazine. The key innovation lies in using eugenol, ethylene diamine, and formaldehyde to create a polybenzoxazine precursor. This eliminates hazardous solvents by employing the safer dimethyl sulfoxide. An acidic catalyst plays a crucial role, not only in influencing the microstructure but also in strengthening the material's backbone by promoting inter-chain connections. Notably, this method allows for ambient pressure drying, further enhancing its sustainability. The polybenzoxazine acts as a precursor to produce two different carbon materials. The carbon material produced from the calcination of PBz is denoted as PBZC, and the carbon material produced from the gelation and calcination of PBz is denoted as PBZGC. The structural characterization of these carbon materials was analyzed through different techniques, such as XRD, Raman, XPS, and BET analyses. BET analysis showed increased surface of 843 m2 g-1 for the carbon derived from the gelation method (PBZGC). The electrochemical studies of PBZC and PBZGC imply that a well-defined morphology, along with suitable porosity, paves the way for increased conductivity of the materials when used as electrodes for supercapacitors. This research paves the way for utilizing heteroatom-doped, polybenzoxazine aerogel-derived carbon as a sustainable and high-performing alternative to traditional carbon materials in energy storage devices.

Observation of a Metastable Honeycomb Arrangement of C60 on Ni(111) with (7 × 7) Periodicity: Tailoring an Interface for Organic Spintronics

Hybrid nanostructures in which organic molecules are interfaced with metal surfaces hold promise for the discovery of intriguing physical and chemical phenomena, as well as for the development of innovative devices. In this frame, it is crucial to understand the interplay between the structural details of the interface and the electronic properties of the system. Here, an experimental investigation of the C₆₀/Ni(111) interface is performed by means of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). The deposition of C₆₀ at room temperature, followed by high-temperature annealing, promotes the stabilization of two different phases. A hitherto unreported phase forming a (7 × 7) honeycomb overlayer coexists with the well-known (4 × 4) reconstruction. Highly resolved STM images disclose the adsorption geometry of the molecules for both phases. STS reveals that the electronic properties of C₆₀/Ni(111) are strongly influenced by the morphology of the interface, suggesting the possibility of tuning the electronic properties of the organic/inorganic heterostructures by adjusting the structural coupling with the substrate. This achievement can be important for hybrid magnetic interfaces, where the harmonization between the molecular and the magnetic orders can enhance the development of hybrid magnetic states.

3-dimensional nucleation of Fe oxide induced by a graphene buffer layer

Shaping the morphology of oxide nanolayers is of paramount importance in tailoring their physical and chemical properties. Here, the influence of a two dimensional graphene buffer layer on the growth of Fe oxide has been investigated by comparing the oxide deposition on a Ni(111) and a graphene/Ni(111) substrate. Scanning tunneling microscopy images acquired at a mesoscopic scale indicate that Fe oxide grows layer-by-layer on the bare Ni(111) surface, while the nucleation of three-dimensional clusters is induced by graphene. Atomically resolved images reveal that Fe oxide adopts an in-plane lattice constant similar to that of the FeO(111) surface when deposited on Ni(111) and graphene/Ni(111), indicating in both cases, a weak interaction between the overlayer and the substrate. Accordingly, it is suggested that the different growth mode is mainly driven by the graphene-induced lowering of the substrate surface free energy.

Study on Local Residual Stress in a Nanocrystalline Cr2O3 Coating by Micro-Raman Spectroscopy

Residual stress in coatings often affects the service performance of coatings, and the residual stresses in some local areas even lead to premature failure of coatings. In this work, we characterized the residual stress of local micro-areas of a nanocrystalline Cr2O3 coating deposited on a Si wafer through micro-Raman spectroscopy, including the depositional edge zone where the electrode was placed, the micro-area containing Cr2O3 macroparticles, and other micro-areas vulnerable to cracks. To accurately measure the thickness of the coating, we combined optical interferometry and direct measurement by a profilometer. The results indicate the existence of in-plane tensile residual stress on the Cr2O3 coating. In thick coatings, the residual stress is independent of the coating thickness and is stable between 0.55 GPa and 0.75 GPa. As the coating thickness is less than 0.8 μm, the residual stress is directly related to the coating thickness. This in-plane tensile stress is considered as the origin of the observed microcrack, which can partially release the stress.
