Designing Janus Ligand Shells on PbS Quantum Dots using Ligand-Ligand Cooperativity

Band Engineering of Perovskite Quantum Dot Solids for High-Performance Solar Cells

CsPbI3 perovskite quantum dot (PQD) shows high potential for next-generation photovoltaics due to their tunable surface chemistry, good solution-processability and unique photophysical properties. However, the remained long-chain ligand attached to the PQD surface significantly impedes the charge carrier transport within the PQD solids, thereby predominantly influencing the charge extraction of PQD solar cells (PQDSCs). Herein, a ligand-induced energy level modulation is reported for band engineering of PQD solids to improve the charge extraction of PQDSCs. Detailed theoretical calculations and systemic experimental studies are performed to comprehensively understand the photophysical properties of the PQD solids dominated by the surface ligands of PQDs. The results reveal that 4-nitrobenzenethiol and 4-methoxybenzenethiol molecules with different dipole moments can firmly anchor to the PQD surface through the thiol group to modulate the energy levels of PQDs, and a gradient band structure within the PQD solid is subsequently realized. Consequently, the band-engineered PQDSC delivers an efficiency of up to 16.44%, which is one of the highest efficiencies of CsPbI3 PQDSCs. This work provides a feasible avenue for the band engineering of PQD solids by tuning the surface chemistry of PQDs for high-performing solar cells or other optoelectronic devices.

Controlling Electronic Coupling of Acene Chromophores on Quantum Dot Surfaces through Variable-Concentration Ligand Exchange

Controlling the binding of functional organic molecules on quantum dot (QD) surfaces and the resulting ligand/QD interfacial structure determines the resulting organic-inorganic hybrid behavior. In this study, we vary the binding of tetracenedicarboxylate ligands bound to PbS QDs cast in thin films by performing solid-state ligand exchange of as-produced bound oleate ligands. We employ comprehensive Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis coupled with ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometric measurements, transient absorption, and Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations to study the QD/ligand surface structure and resulting optoelectronic properties. We find that there are three primary QD/diacid structures, each with a distinct binding mode dictated by the QD-ligand and ligand-ligand intermolecular and steric interactions. They can be accessed nearly independently of one another via different input ligand concentrations. Low concentrations produce mixed oleate/tetracene ligand structures where the tetracene carboxylates tilt toward QD surfaces. Intermediate concentrations produce mixed oleate/tetracene ligand structures with ligand-ligand interactions through intramolecular hydrogen bonding with the ligands perpendicular to the QD surface and weaker QD/ligand electronic interactions. High concentrations result in full ligand exchange, and the ligands tilt toward the surface while the QD film compacts. When the tetracene ligands tilt or lie flat on the QD surface, the benzene ring π-system interacts strongly with the p-orbitals at the PbS surface and produces strong QD-ligand interactions evidenced through QD/ligand state mixing, with a coupling energy of ≈700 meV.

Solvent Effects in Ligand Stripping Behavior of Colloidal Nanoparticles

Inorganic colloidal nanoparticle (NP) properties can be tuned by stripping stabilizing ligands using a poor solvent. However, the mechanism behind ligand stripping is poorly understood, in part because in situ measurements of ligand stripping are challenging at the nanoscale. Here, we investigate ethanol solvent-mediated oleylamine ligand stripping from magnetite (Fe₃O₄) NPs in different compositions of ethanol/hexane mixtures using atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Our study elucidates a complex interplay of ethanol interactions with system components and indicates the existence of a threshold concentration of ∼34 vol % ethanol, above which ligand stripping saturates. Moreover, hydrogen bonding between ethanol and stripped ligands inhibits subsequent readsorption of the ligands on the NP surface. A proposed modification of the Langmuir isotherm explains the role of the enthalpy of mixing of the ligands and solvents on the ligand stripping mechanism. A good agreement between the MD predictions and TGA measurements of ligand stripping from Fe₃O₄ NPs validates the simulation observations. Our findings demonstrate that the ligand coverage of NPs can be controlled by using a poor solvent below the threshold concentration and highlight the importance of ligand-solvent interactions that modulate the properties of colloidal NPs. The study also provides an approach for a detailed in silico study of ligand stripping and exchange from colloidal NPs that are crucial for applications of NPs spanning self-assembly, optoelectronics, nanomedicine, and catalysis.

NMR Characterization of Nanoscale Surface Patterning in Mixed Ligand Nanoparticles

Spontaneous phase separation in binary mixed ligand shells is a proposed strategy to create patchy nanoparticles. The surface anisotropy, providing directionality along with interfacial properties emerging from both ligands, is highly desirable for targeted drug delivery, catalysis, and other applications. However, characterization of phase separation on the nanoscale remains quite challenging. Here we have adapted solid-state ¹H spin diffusion NMR experiments designed to detect and quantify spatial heterogeneity in polymeric materials to nanoparticles (NPs) functionalized with mixed short ligands. Janus NPs and physical mixtures of homoligand 3.5 nm diameter ZrO₂ NPs, with aromatic (phenylphosphonic acid, PPA) and aliphatic (oleic acid, OA) ligands, were used to calibrate the ¹H spin diffusion experiments. The Janus NPs, prepared by a facile wax/water Pickering emulsion method, and mixed ligand NPs, produced by ligand exchange, both with 1:1 PPA:OA ligand compositions, display strikingly different solvent and particle-particle interactions. ¹H spin diffusion NMR experiments are most consistent with a lamellar surface pattern for the mixed ligand ZrO₂ NPs. Solid-state ¹H spin diffusion NMR is shown to be a valuable additional characterization tool for mixed ligand NPs, as it not only detects the presence of nanoscale phase separation but also allows measurement of the domain sizes and geometries of the surface phase separation.

Manipulations of nanocrystal (NC) surfaces have propelled the applications of colloidal NCs across various fields such as bioimaging, catalysis, electronics, and sensing applications.

Pyroelectricity of Lead Sulfide (PbS) Quantum Dot Films Induced by Janus-Ligand Shells

Asymmetry is an essential property to control. To do that in nanocrystalline systems we have developed methods to produce Janus-ligand shells on otherwise symmetric PbS quantum dots (QDs). Here, we demonstrate that control by constructing a system that exhibits pyroelectricity built from spherical PbS QDs. We observed a pyroelectric current in two different configurations. In one configuration, the QDs are self-assembled into close-packed arrays while in the second configuration, the QDs are dispersed into an electro-inactive polymer, polydimethylsiloxane. Both exhibit a pyroelectric response. In the first configuration we estimate a lower limit of the pyroelectric coefficient to be 1.97 × 10^-7 C/m²·K, which is likely limited by the degree of QD alignment during film formation but is already on par with common pyroelectric systems. Compared with inorganic ceramic-like and polymeric pyroelectric materials, pyroelectric films self-assembled from polar QDs are easier to prepare, responsive to light with different energies based on QD exciton energy, and the polarization of each QD could be easily tuned by constructing different Janus-ligand shells.

Molecular-Level Insight into Semiconductor Nanocrystal Surfaces

Semiconductor nanocrystals exhibit attractive photophysical properties for use in a variety of applications. Advancing the efficiency of nanocrystal-based devices requires a deep understanding of the physical defects and electronic states that trap charge carriers. Many of these states reside at the nanocrystal surface, which acts as an interface between the semiconductor lattice and the molecular capping ligands. While a detailed structural and electronic understanding of the surface is required to optimize nanocrystal properties, these materials are at a technical disadvantage: unlike molecular structures, semiconductor nanocrystals lack a specific chemical formula and generally must be characterized as heterogeneous ensembles. Therefore, in order for the field to improve current nanocrystal-based technologies, a creative approach to gaining a "molecular-level" picture of nanocrystal surfaces is required. To this end, an expansive toolbox of experimental and computational techniques has emerged in recent years. In this Perspective, we critically evaluate the insight into surface structure and reactivity that can be gained from each of these techniques and demonstrate how their strategic combination is already advancing our molecular-level understanding of nanocrystal surface chemistry.

Effect of Ligand Adsorption on the Electronic Properties of the PbS(100) Surface

A first-principles density functional theory calculation was carried out to study the adsorption of acetic acid, methyl amine, methanethiol, and hydrogen iodide on the (100) surface of PbS. All four ligands are common capping agents used in colloidal PbS quantum dot-based photovoltaics. Interestingly, among the considered adsorbates, dissociative adsorption was energetically preferred for hydrogen iodide, while associative adsorption was favorable for the rest. Associative adsorption was driven by strong interactions between the electronegative elements (Y) in the respective ligands and the Pb surface atoms via Pb 6p-Y np bond hybridization (n represents the valence quantum number of the respective electronegative elements). Importantly, the adsorption of ligands altered the work function of PbS, with contrasting trends for associative (decrease in the work function) versus dissociative (increase in the work function) adsorption. The changes in the work function correlates well with a corresponding shift in the 5d level of surface Pb atoms. Other important observations include variations in the work function that linearly change with increasing the surface coverage of adsorbed ligands as well as with the strength of the adsorption of ligands.

Dynamic Interfacial Trapping of Janus Nanorod Aggregates

Taking advantage of both shape and chemical anisotropy on the same nanoparticle offers rich self-assembly possibilities for nanotechnology. Through dissipative particle dynamics calculations, in the present work, the directed assembly of Janus nanorod aggregates and their capability to assemble into metastable novel structures at an interfacial level have been assessed. Symmetric Janus rods become kinetically trapped and exhibit either parallel or antiparallel alignment with respect to their long axis (different compositions). This depends on several factors that have been mapped herein and that can be precisely tuned: Flory-Huggins interaction parameter χ between polymer phases; concentration; shear rate; and even aggregate shape. Ultimately, two different aggregate structures result from rod tumbling that are not observed under quiescent conditions: monolayer-like aggregates exhibiting trapped rods with antiparallel configuration; and stacked nanorod arrays similar to superlattice sheets. These different structures can be controlled by the likelihood with which tumbling Janus rods encounter other aggregate portions showing parallel alignment. Hence, the present study offers fundamental insight into relevant parameters that govern the directed assembly of Janus nanoparticles at an interfacial level. Novel applications may potentially derive from the resulting aggregate structures, such as peculiar displays and sensors.

Unsaturated Ligands Seed an Order to Disorder Transition in Mixed Ligand Shells of CdSe/CdS Quantum Dots

A phase transition within the ligand shell of core/shell quantum dots is studied in the prototypical system of colloidal CdSe/CdS quantum dots with a ligand shell composed of bound oleate (OA) and octadecylphosphonate (ODPA). The ligand shell composition is tuned using a ligand exchange procedure and quantified through proton NMR spectroscopy. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy reveals a signature of a phase transition within the organic ligand shell. Surprisingly, the ligand order to disorder phase transition triggers an abrupt increase in the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) with increasing temperature. The temperature and width of the phase transition show a clear dependence on ligand shell composition, such that QDs with higher ODPA fractions have sharper phase transitions that occur at higher temperatures. In order to gain a molecular understanding of the changes in ligand ordering, Fourier transform infrared and vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopies are performed. These measurements confirm that an order/disorder transition in the ligand shell tracks with the photoluminescence changes that accompany the ligand phase transition. The phase transition is simulated through a lattice model that suggests that the ligand shell is well-mixed and does not have completely segregated domains of OA and ODPA. Furthermore, we show that the unsaturated chains of OA seed disorder within the ligand shell.
