Atomic Layer Deposition onto Thermoplastic Polymeric Nanofibrous Aerogel Templates for Tailored Surface Properties

Butane Tetracarboxylic Acid Grafted on Polymeric Nanofibrous Aerogels for Highly Efficient Protein Absorption and Separation

Developing high-performance and low-cost protein purification materials is of great importance to meet the demands for highly purified proteins in biotechnological industries. Herein, a facile strategy was developed to design and construct high-efficiency protein absorption and separation media by combining aerogels' molding techniques and impregnation processes. Poly (ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) nanofibrous aerogels (NFAs) were modified by grafting butane tetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) over them in situ. This modification was carried out using polyphosphoric acid as a catalyst. The resulting EVOH/BTCA NFAs exhibited favorable comprehensive properties. Benefiting from the highly interconnected porous structure, good underwater compressive properties, and abundant absorption ligands, the obtained EVOH/BTCA NFAs possessed a high static absorption capacity of 1082.13 mg/g to lysozyme and a short absorption equilibrium time of about 6 h. A high saturated dynamic absorption capacity for lysozyme (716.85 mg/g) was also realized solely by gravity. Furthermore, EVOH/BTCA NFAs displayed excellent reusability, good acid and alkaline resistance, and unique absorption selectivity performance. The successful synthesis of such aerogels can provide a potential candidate for next-generation protein absorbents for bio-separation and purification engineering.

Fabrication of EVOH/PANI Composite Nanofibrous Aerogels for the Removal of Dyes and Heavy Metal Ions

Water pollution caused by the leakage and discharge of pollutants, such as dyes and heavy metal ions, can cause serious damage to the environment and human health. Therefore, it is important to design and develop adsorbent materials that are efficient and multifunctional for the removal of these pollutants. In this work, poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (EVOH)/polyaniline (PANI) composite nanofibrous aerogels (NFAs) were fabricated via solution oxidation and blending. The aerogels were characterized by a scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, a contact angle measuring instrument and a universal testing machine. The influences of the introduction of PANI nanorods on the structural properties of aerogels were investigated, and the adsorption performance of aerogels was also studied. The results showed that the introduction of PANI nanorods filled the fibrous network structure, reduced porosity, increased surface hydrophilicity and improved compressive strength. Furthermore, EVOH/PANI composite NFAs possess good adsorption performances for dyes and heavy metal ions: The adsorption capacities of methyl orange and chromium ions (VI) are 73.22 mg/g and 115.54 mg/g, respectively. Overall, the research suggests that EVOH/PANI NFAs have great potential as efficient and multifunctional adsorbent materials for the removal of pollutants from water.

Electrospun Nanofibrous Membranes: A Versatile Medium for Waterproof and Breathable Application

Waterproof and breathable membranes that prevent liquid water penetration, while allowing air and moisture transmission, have attracted significant attention for various applications. Electrospun nanofiber materials with adjustable pore structures, easily tunable wettability, and good pore connectivity, have shown significant potential for constructing waterproof and breathable membranes. Herein, a systematic overview of the recent progress in the design, fabrication, and application of waterproof and breathable nanofibrous membranes is provided. The various strategies for fabricating the membranes mainly including one-step electrospinning and post-treatment of nanofibers are given as a starting point for the discussion. The different design concepts and structural characteristics of each type of waterproof and breathable membrane are comprehensively analyzed. Then, some representative applications of the membranes are highlighted, involving personal protection, desalination, medical dressing, and electronics. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives associated with waterproof and breathable nanofibrous membranes are presented.

Ultrathin Cellulose Nanofiber Assisted Ambient-Pressure-Dried, Ultralight, Mechanically Robust, Multifunctional MXene Aerogels

Ambient-pressure-dried (APD) preparation of transition metal carbide/nitrides (MXene) aerogels is highly desirable yet remains highly challenging. Here, ultrathin, high-strength-to-weight-ratio, renewable cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are efficiently utilized to assist in the APD preparation of ultralight yet robust, highly conductive, large-area MXene-based aerogels via a facile, energy-efficient, eco-friendly, and scalable freezing-exchanging-drying approach. The strong interactions of large-aspect-ratio CNF and MXene as well as the biomimetic nacre-like microstructure induce high mechanical strength and stability to avoid the structure collapse of aerogels in the APD process. Abundant functional groups of CNFs facilitate the chemical crosslinking of MXene-based aerogels, significantly improving the hydrophobicity, water resistance, and even oxidation stability. The ultrathin, 1D nature of the CNF renders the minimal MXenes' interlayered gaps and numerous heterogeneous interfaces, yielding the excellent conductivity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance of aerogels. The synergies of the MXene, CNF, and abundant pores efficiently improve the EMI shielding performance, photothermal conversion, and absorption of viscous crude oil. This work shows great promises of the APD, multifunctional MXene-based aerogels in electromagnetic protection or compatibility, thermal therapy, and oil-water separation applications.

Fabrication and application of macroscopic nanowire aerogels

Assembly of nanowires into three-dimensional macroscopic aerogels not only bridges a gap between nanowires and macroscopic bulk materials but also combines the benefits of two worlds: unique structural features of aerogels and unique physical and chemical properties of nanowires, which has triggered significant progress in the design and fabrication of nanowire-based aerogels for a diverse range of practical applications. This article reviews the methods developed for processing nanowires into three-dimensional monolithic aerogels and the applications of the resultant nanowire aerogels in many emerging fields. Detailed discussions are given on gelation mechanisms involved in every preparation method and the pros and cons of the different methods. Furthermore, we systematically scrutinize the application of nanowire-based aerogels in the fields of thermal management, energy storage and conversion, catalysis, adsorbents, sensors, and solar steam generation. The unique benefits offered by nanowire-based aerogels in every application field are clarified. We also discuss how to improve the performance of nanowire-based aerogels in those fields by engineering the compositions and structures of the aerogels. Finally, we provide our perspectives on future development of nanowire-based aerogels.
