Microwave Synthesis of Silver Sulfide and Silver Nanoparticles: Light and Time Influence

Alginate-enabled green synthesis of S/Ag1.93S nanoparticles, their photothermal property and in-vitro assessment of their anti-skin-cancer effects augmented by a NIR laser

We report herein the design and synthesis of colloidally-stable S/Ag_1.93S nanoparticles, their photothermal conversion properties and in vitro cytotoxicity toward A431 skin cancer cells under the excitation of a minimally-invasive 980 nm near-infrared (NIR) laser. Micron-sized S particles were first synthesized via acidifying Na₂S₂O₃ using biocompatible sodium alginate as a surfactant. In the presence of AgNO₃ and under rapid microwave-induced heating, alginate reduced AgNO₃ to nascent Ag which reacted with molten S in situ to S/Ag_1.93S nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were characterized using a combination of X-ray diffraction, electron microscopies, elemental analysis, zeta-potential analysis and UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy. The average particles size was controlled between 40 and 60 nm by fixing the mole ratio of Ag⁺:S₂O₃^2-. When excited by a 980 nm laser, S/Ag_1.93S nanoparticles (~40 nm) produced with the least amount of AgNO₃ exhibited a respectable photothermal conversion efficiency of circa 62% with the test aqueous solution heated to a hyperthermia-inducing 52 °C in 15 min. At 0.7 W/cm², the viability of A431 skin cancer cells incubated with 7.0 ± 0.2 μg/mL of S/Ag_1.93S nanoparticles reduced to 14 ± 0.6%, while an A431 cell control maintained an 80% cell viability. These results suggested that S/Ag_1.93S nanoparticles may have good potential in reducing metastatic skin carcinoma.

Silver nanomaterials: synthesis and (electro/photo) catalytic applications

In view of their unique characteristics and properties, silver nanomaterials (Ag NMs) have been used not only in the field of nanomedicine but also for diverse advanced catalytic technologies. In this comprehensive review, light is shed on general synthetic approaches encompassing chemical reduction, sonochemical, microwave, and thermal treatment among the preparative methods for the syntheses of Ag-based NMs and their catalytic applications. Additionally, some of the latest innovative approaches such as continuous flow integrated with MW and other benign approaches have been emphasized that ultimately pave the way for sustainability. Moreover, the potential applications of emerging Ag NMs, including sub nanomaterials and single atoms, in the field of liquid-phase catalysis, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis as well as a positive role of Ag NMs in catalytic reactions are meticulously summarized. The scientific interest in the synthesis and applications of Ag NMs lies in the integrated benefits of their catalytic activity, selectivity, stability, and recovery. Therefore, the rise and journey of Ag NM-based catalysts will inspire a new generation of chemists to tailor and design robust catalysts that can effectively tackle major environmental challenges and help to replace noble metals in advanced catalytic applications. This overview concludes by providing future perspectives on the research into Ag NMs in the arena of electrocatalysis and photocatalysis.

Effect of Plasma-Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition on Oxygen Overabundance and Its Influence on the Morphological, Optical, Structural, and Mechanical Properties of Al-Doped TiO2 Coating

The chemical, structural, morphological, and optical properties of Al-doped TiO₂ thin films, called TiO₂/Al₂O₃ nanolaminates, grown by plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) on p-type Si <100> and commercial SLG glass were discussed. High-quality PEALD TiO₂/Al₂O₃ nanolaminates were produced in the amorphous and crystalline phases. All crystalline nanolaminates have an overabundance of oxygen, while amorphous ones lack oxygen. The superabundance of oxygen on the crystalline film surface was illustrated by a schematic representation that described this phenomenon observed for PEALD TiO₂/Al₂O₃ nanolaminates. The transition from crystalline to amorphous phase increased the surface hardness and the optical gap and decreased the refractive index. Therefore, the doping effect of TiO₂ by the insertion of Al₂O₃ monolayers showed that it is possible to adjust different parameters of the thin-film material and to control, for example, the mobility of the hole-electron pair in the metal-insulator-devices semiconductors, corrosion protection, and optical properties, which are crucial for application in a wide range of technological areas, such as those used to manufacture fluorescence biosensors, photodetectors, and solar cells, among other devices.
