New Nanomagnetic Heterogeneous Cobalt Catalyst for the Synthesis of Aryl Nitriles and Biaryls

ZnCo2O4@g-C3N4@Cu as a new and highly efficient heterogeneous photocatalyst for visible light-induced cyanation and Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reactions

Conducting C-C cross-coupling reactions under convenient and mild conditions remains extremely challenging in traditional organic synthesis. In this study, ZnCo2O4@g-C3N4@Cu exhibited extraordinary photocatalytic performance as a new visible light harvesting heterogeneous copper-based photocatalyst in cyanation and Mizoroki-Heck visible-light-driven cross-coupling reactions at room temperature and in air. Surprisingly, by this method, the cyanation and Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reactions of various iodo-, bromo- and also the challenging chloroarenes with respectively K4[Fe(CN)6]·3H2O and olefins produced promising results in a sustainable and mild media. The significant photocatalytic performance of ZnCo2O4@g-C3N4@Cu arises from the synergistic optical properties of ZnCo2O4, g-C3N4, and Cu. These components can enhance the charge carrier generation and considerably reduce the recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. No need to use heat or additives, applying an economical and benign light source, utilizing an environmentally compatible solvent, facile and low-cost photocatalytic approach, aerial conditions, high stability and convenient recyclability of the photocatalyst are the remarkable highlights of this methodology. Moreover, this platform exhibited the ability to be performed on a large scale, which is considered an important issue in industrial and pharmaceutical use. It is worth noting that this is the first time that a heterogeneous copper-based photocatalyst has been employed in visible light-promoted cyanation reactions of aryl halides.

Novel nickel-immobilized-SiO2-TiO2 fine particles in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a catalyst for ultrasound-assisted-Kumada cross-coupling reaction

Kumada cross-coupling reaction is useful for producing biphenyls, where nickel and copper have been widely investigated as catalysts but mainly homogeneous ones. In this study, we investigated ultrasound-assisted-Kumada cross-coupling reaction over the heterogeneous catalysts in which Ni2+, Cu2+, or both was immobilized on aminopropylsilane-functionalized-SiO2-TiO2 prepared in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The presence of CTAB effectively prevented the particle growth and therefore SiO2-TiO2 fine particles with high surface area (502 m2 g-1) were formed. The Ni2+-immobilized catalyst showed high catalytic activity for the ultrasound-assisted-Kumada cross-coupling reaction of a wide variety of substrates and was reusable three times. Performing the reaction under ultrasound irradiation was very effective in significantly accelerating the reaction rate compared with the conventional mechanical method. In contrast to Ni2+, Cu2+ was deposited on the support as crystalline Cu(OH)2 and the resulting catalysts with Cu2+ and Ni2+-Cu2+ were less active and less stable under the reaction conditions.

Cobalt isatin-Schiff-base derivative of MOF as a heterogeneous multifunctional bio-photocatalyst for sunlight-induced tandem air oxidation condensation process

A sunlight-induced tandem air oxidation-condensation of alcohols with ortho-substituted anilines or malononitrile for the efficient synthesis of benz-imidazoles/-oxazoles/-thiazoles, or benzylidene malononitrile catalyzed by Co-isatin-Schiff-base-MIL-101(Fe) as a heterogeneous multifunctional bio-photocatalyst is reported. In these reactions, Co-isatin-Schiff-base-MIL-101(Fe) acts both as a photocatalyst, and a Lewis acid to catalyze the reaction of the in-situ formed aldehydes with o-substituted anilines or malononitrile. A significant decrease in the band gap energy and an increase in the characteristic emission of MIL-101(Fe) after functionalization with cobalt Schiff-base according to the DRS analysis and fluorescence spectrophotometry, respectively, indicate that the photocatalytic effectiveness of the catalyst is associated primarily to the synergetic influence of Fe-O cluster and Co-Schiff-base. EPR results obviously pointed out that Co-isatin-Schiff-base-MIL-101(Fe) is capable of creating ¹O₂ and O₂^⋅- as active oxygen species under visible light irradiation. Using an inexpensive catalyst, sunlight irradiation, air as a cost-effective and abundant oxidant, and a low amount of the catalyst with recoverability and durability in ethanol as a green solvent, make this methodology as an environmentally friendly process with energy-saving organic synthetic strategies. Furthermore, Co-isatin-Schiff-base-MIL-101(Fe) displays excellent photocatalytic antibacterial activity under sunlight irradiation against E. coli, S. aureus and S. pyogenes. Based on our knowledge, this is the first report of using a bio-photocatalyst for the synthesis of the target molecules.

Functionalized hybrid magnetic catalytic systems on micro- and nanoscale utilized in organic synthesis and degradation of dyes

Herein, a concise review of the latest developments in catalytic processes involving organic reactions is presented, focusing on magnetic catalytic systems (MCSs). In recent years, various micro- and nanoscale magnetic catalysts have been prepared through different methods based on optimized reaction conditions and utilized in complex organic synthesis or degradation reactions of pharmaceutical compounds. These biodegradable, biocompatible and eco-benign MCSs have achieved the principles of green chemistry, and thus their usage is highly advocated. In addition, MCSs can shorten the reaction time, effectively accelerate reactions, and significantly upgrade both pharmaceutical synthesis and degradation mechanisms by preventing unwanted side reactions. Moreover, the other significant benefits of MCSs include their convenient magnetic separation, high stability and reusability, inexpensive raw materials, facile preparation routes, and surface functionalization. In this review, our aim is to present at the recent improvements in the structure of versatile MCSs and their characteristics, i.e., magnetization, recyclability, structural stability, turnover number (TON), and turnover frequency (TOF). Concisely, different hybrid and multifunctional MCSs are discussed. Additionally, the applications of MCSs for the synthesis of different pharmaceutical ingredients and degradation of organic wastewater contaminants such as toxic dyes and drugs are demonstrated.

Recent Progress of Metal Nanoparticle Catalysts for C–C Bond Forming Reactions

Over the past few decades, the use of transition metal nanoparticles (NPs) in catalysis has attracted much attention and their use in C–C bond forming reactions constitutes one of their most important applications. A huge variety of metal NPs, which have showed high catalytic activity for C–C bond forming reactions, have been developed up to now. Many kinds of stabilizers, such as inorganic materials, magnetically recoverable materials, porous materials, organic–inorganic composites, carbon materials, polymers, and surfactants have been utilized to develop metal NPs catalysts. This review classified and outlined the categories of metal NPs by the type of support.

A new nanomagnetic Pd-Co bimetallic alloy as catalyst in the Mizoroki-Heck and Buchwald-Hartwig amination reactions in aqueous media

A Pd-Co bimetallic alloy encapsulated in melamine-based dendrimer supported on magnetic nanoparticles denoted as γ-Fe2O3@MBD/Pd-Co was synthesized by a facile co-complexation-reduction method and characterized sufficiently. The catalytic evaluation of γ-Fe2O3@MBD/Pd-Co showed promising results in the Mizoroki-Heck and Buchwald-Hartwig amination reactions of various iodo-, bromo- and challenging chloroarenes in aqueous media. The synergetic cooperative effect of both Pd and Co and dispersion of the catalyst in water due to the encapsulation of γ-Fe2O3 by melamine-based dendrimer lead to high catalytic performance compared with the monometallic counterparts. The dispersion of the magnetic catalyst also facilitates the recovery and reuse of the catalyst by ten consecutive extraction and final magnetic isolation with no loss of catalytic activity, keeping its structure unaltered.

Fe-MIL-101 modified by isatin-Schiff-base-Co: a heterogeneous catalyst for C–C, C–O, C–N, and C–P cross coupling reactions

Fe-MIL-101-isatin-Schiff-base-Co was synthesized and applied as a catalyst for Ullmann-type, Buchwald–Hartwig, Hirao, Hiyama and Mizoroki–Heck cross-coupling reactions of aryl halides.

Tandem imine formation via auto-hydrogen transfer from alcohols to nitro compounds catalyzed by a nanomagnetically recyclable copper catalyst under solvent-free conditions

A direct imination reaction was developed by tandem reaction of alcohols and nitro compounds in the presence of Cu-isatin Schiff base-γ-Fe₂O₃ as a nanomagnetically recyclable catalyst under solvent-free conditions. By this method, various imines were prepared in good to high yields from one-pot reaction of various alcohols (primary aromatic and aliphatic) and nitro compounds (aromatic and aliphatic) via an auto-hydrogen transfer reaction. Use of an inexpensive and easily reusable catalyst, without requiring any additives or excess amounts of benzyl alcohol as the reaction solvent are the other advantages of this method. This catalytic system has the merits of cost effectiveness, environmental benignity, excellent recyclability and good reproducibility.
