Degradation Mechanism of Benzo[a]pyrene Initiated by the OH Radical and 1O2: An Insight from Density Functional Theory Calculations

Photostimulated Extended Nitric Oxide (NO) Release from Water-Soluble Block Copolymer to Enhance Antibacterial Activity

N-Nitrosamines are well established motifs to release nitric oxide (NO) under photoirradiation. Herein, a series of amphiphilic N-nitrosamine-based block copolymers (BCPx-NO) are developed to attain controlled NO release under photoirradiation (365 nm, 3.71 mW/cm2). The water-soluble BCPx-NO forms micellar architecture in aqueous medium and exhibits a sustained NO release of 92-160 μM within 11.5 h, which is 36.8-64.0% of the calculated value. To understand the NO release mechanism, a small molecular NO donor (NOD) resembling the NO releasing functional motif of BCPx-NO is synthesized, which displays a burst NO release in DMSO within 2.5 h. The radical nature of the released NO is confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The gradual NO release from micellar BCPx-NO enhances antibacterial activity over NOD and exhibits a superior bactericidal effect on Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. In relation to biomedical applications, this work offers a comprehensive insight into tuning light-triggered NO release to improve antibacterial activity.

Singlet oxygen in the removal of organic pollutants: An updated review on the degradation pathways based on mass spectrometry and DFT calculations

The degradation of pollutants by a non-radical pathway involving singlet oxygen (1O2) is highly relevant in advanced oxidation processes. Photosensitizers, modified photocatalysts, and activated persulfates can generate highly selective 1O2 in the medium. The selective reaction of 1O2 with organic pollutants results in the evolution of different intermediate products. While these products can be identified using mass spectrometry (MS) techniques, predicting a proper degradation mechanism in a 1O2-based process is still challenging. Earlier studies utilized MS techniques in the identification of intermediate products and the mechanism was proposed with the support of theoretical calculations. Although some reviews have been reported on the generation of 1O2 and its environmental applications, a proper review of the degradation mechanism by 1O2 is not yet available. Hence, we reviewed the possible degradation pathways of organic contaminants in 1O2-mediated oxidation with the support of density functional theory (DFT). The Fukui function (FF, f-, f+, and f0), HOMO-LUMO energies, and Gibbs free energies obtained using DFT were used to identify the active site in the molecule and the degradation mechanism, respectively. Electrophilic addition, outer sphere type single electron transfer (SET), and addition to the hetero atoms are the key mechanisms involved in the degradation of organic contaminants by 1O2. Since environmental matrices contain several contaminants, it is difficult to experiment with all contaminants to identify their intermediate products. Therefore, the DFT studies are useful for predicting the intermediate compounds during the oxidative removal of the contaminants, especially for complex composition wastewater.

Advanced oxidation processes for the removal of mono and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons - A review

Aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs) are toxic environmental contaminants presented in most of the environmental matrices. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the removal of AHs in the account of complete mineralization from various environmental matrices have been reviewed in this paper. An in-depth discussion on various AOPs for mono (BTEX) and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives is presented. Most of the AOPs were effective in the removal of AHs from the aquatic environment. A comparative study on the degradation of various AHs revealed that the oxidation of the AHs is strongly dependent on the number of aromatic rings and the functional groups attached to the ring. The formation of halogenated and nitrated derivatives of AHs in the real contaminated water containing chloride, nitrite, and nitrate ions seems to be a challenge in using the AOPs in real systems. The phenolic compounds, quinone, alcohols, and aliphatic acids are the important byproducts formed during the oxidation of AHs, initiated by the attack of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on their electron-rich center. In conclusion, AOPs are the adaptable method for the removal of AHs from different environmental matrices. The persulfate-based AOPs were applied in the soil phase removal as an in situ chemical oxidation of AHs. Moreover, the combination of AOPs will be a conclusive solution to avoid or minimize unexpected or other toxic intermediate products and to obtain rapid oxidation of AHs.

Oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in food: toxicity, occurrence and potential sources

Oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) functionalized with at least one carbonyl group and are generally thought to be more toxic than PAHs. In this review, the physical-chemical properties, toxicity, occurrence, and potential sources of OPAHs in food were comprehensively discussed. The toxicities of 1,2-naphthoquinone, 1,4-naphthoquinone, 6H-benzo[cd]pyren-6-one, benzo[a]anthracene-7,12-quinone and 9,10-phenanthrenequinone were prominent among the OPAHs. Both 1,4-naphthoquinone and 1,2-naphthoquinone exhibited strong genotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and developmental toxicity. 6H-benzo[cd]pyren-6-one and benzo[a]anthracene-7,12-quinone showed high genotoxicity and cardiovascular toxicity. Although 9,10-phenanthrenequinone showed no genotoxicity, it exhibited almost the strongest cytotoxicity. For the majority of foods, the concentrations of OPAHs and PAHs were on the same order of magnitude. OPAHs tend to be positively correlated with the corresponding PAH concentrations in oil and fried food, while for barbequed food and seafood, no obvious correlation was found. In addition, 9-fluorenone, 9,10-anthraquinone, benzanthrone and 1,2-acenaphthenequinone had high abundance in food. Environmental pollution, food composition, storage conditions, heating methods, and other treatments influence the accumulation of OPAHs in food. Furthermore, oxygen and water played an important role in the transformation from PAHs to OPAHs. In short, this review guides the evaluation and further reduction of OPAH-related health risks in food.

Prediction of •OH-Initiated and •NO3-Initiated Transformation Products of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Electronic Structure Approaches

The abiotic reaction products of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with hydroxyl radicals (^•OH) and nitrate radicals (^•NO₃) are nitro-, oxygen-, and hydroxyl-containing PAHs (NPAHs, OPAHs, and OHPAHs). Four methods of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), Fukui function (FF), dual descriptor (DD), and population of π electrons (PP-π) are selected to predict the chemical reactivity of PAHs attacked by ^•OH and ^•NO₃ in this study. The predicted ^•OH-initiated and ^•NO₃-initiated transformation products are compared with the main PAH transformation products (PAH-TPs) observed in the laboratory. The results indicate that PP-π and DD approaches fail to predict the transformation products of fused PAHs containing five-membered rings. By predicting the PAH-TPs of 13-14 out of the 15 parent PAHs accurately, HOMO and FF methods were shown to be suitable for predicting the transformation products formed from the abiotic reactions of fused PAHs with ^•OH and ^•NO₃.

Enhanced transformation capability towards benzo(a)pyrene by Fe(III)-modified manganese oxides

Manganese oxides (Mn oxides) are ubiquitous and may coexist with Fe(III) ions in soil environments. In this study, acid birnessite, alkaline birnessite, cryptomelane, pyrolusite, manganite, and their Fe(III)-modified analogues were synthesized and used for benzo(a)pyrene transformation. Fe-modified Mn oxides show a markedly enhanced transformation capability towards benzo(a)pyrene. Specifically, the benzo(a)pyrene transformation rate constants k for Bir-H, Bir-OH, Cry, Pyr, and Man were 0.49, 0.080, 0.0071, 0.0055, and 0.0022 h^-1, respectively. After Fe(III) modification, the transformation rate constants were increased to 22, 2.7, 0.25, 0.0072 and 0.0098 h^-1, respectively. Fe(III)-modified layered birnessites exhibited better activity than Fe(III)-modified tunnel Mn oxides, which was attributed to their high Fe(III) contents and abundant active free radicals. Fe(III) was found to accept electrons from benzo(a)pyrene, thereby accelerating the benzo(a)pyrene transformation. Moreover, modification with Fe(III) increased the surface adsorbed water and oxygen, and promoted the generation of active free radicals. Finally, the physicochemical and biochemical properties of transformation products showed the environmental benefits of this process. Overall, the results indicate that the occurrence of Fe(III) ions could promote the removal of PAHs in Mn oxides-rich soils, and this study provides a credible understanding of PAH fates in natural soils.
