Density Functional Theory and XPS Studies of the Adsorption of Cyanide on Chalcopyrite Surfaces

Grinding siderite with ferric sulfate to generate an active ferrous source for Cr(VI) reduction

Activated siderite, endowed with excellent properties, was simply prepared by co-grinding with Fe sulfate to enhance its high reducing ability for Cr(VI). Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the main affecting parameters, such as material ratio, pH, temperature, etc. The removal of Cr(VI) by activated siderite was completed within 4 h of the reaction. The activated siderite maintained a high removal effect of Cr(VI) within a wide pH range (3-9). Various analytical methods, including XRD, SEM/EDS, XPS, etc., were employed to characterize the samples and discover variations before and after the reaction. The Fe (Ⅱ) in activated siderite becomes highly active, and it can even be released from the solid phase in the mildly acidic liquid phase to efficiently reduce Cr(VI) and mitigate its toxicity. These findings introduce an innovative approach for activating various minerals widely distributed in nature to promote the recovery of the ecological system.

Cyanide removal of gold cyanide residues by manganese compounds as new decyanation reagents

Plenty of the toxic gold cyanide residues are produced by cyanidation process of gold extraction. As a kind of hazardous solid wastes, cyanide residues must be treated to remove cyanide before disposal. In this study, the removal of cyanide in gold cyanide residues by manganese compounds (KMnO4 and MnO2) was investigated. It was found that both KMnO4 and MnO2 could be used as new decyanation reagents for cyanide removal. To make the residue after cyanide removal meet the national standard, it needed KMnO4 1.8 wt% for 60 min reaction or MnO2 1.0 wt% for 30 min reaction with about pH 8.0. The mechanisms of two processes were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that KMnO4 concentrates on the reactions with pyrite in the cyanide residue, the products are mainly Fe(II), Fe(III), SO42- and MnO2. KMnO4 added in the slurry could be consumed by pyrite before oxidation of cyanide, resulting in relatively low cyanide remove efficiency and high KMnO4 consumption. On the surface of the residue after MnO2 treatment, there are mainly pyrite, Fe(II), Mn(II), Fe-CN and CN-, showing that the MnO2 process focuses on the removal of cyanide in the cyanide residue. The MnO2 process has the advantages of low reagents consumption, short reaction time and high cyanide removal efficiency, presenting a promise use for cyanide removal of cyanide residues in a range of applications.

N-Type Doping of Naphthalenediimide-Based Random Donor-Acceptor Copolymers to Enhance Transistor Performance and Structural Crystallinity

An integrated strategy of molecular design and conjugated polymer doping is proposed to improve the electronic characteristics for organic field effect transistor (OFET) applications. Here, a series of soluble naphthalene diimide (NDI)-based random donor-acceptor copolymers with selenophene π-conjugated linkers and four acceptors with different electron-withdrawing strengths (named as rNDI-N/S/NN/SS) are synthesized, characterized, and used for OFETs. N-type doping of NDI-based random copolymers using (12a,18a)-5,6,12,12a,13,18,18a,19-octahydro-5,6-dimethyl-13,18[1',2']-benzenobisbenzimidazo[1,2-b:2',1'-d]benzo[i][2.5]benzodiazocine potassium triflate adduct (DMBI-BDZC) is successfully demonstrated. The undoped rNDI-N, rNDI-NN, and rNDI-SS samples exhibit ambipolar charge transport, while rNDI-S presents only a unipolar n-type characteristic. Doping with DMBI-BDZC significantly modulates the performance of rNDI-N/S OFETs, with a 3- to 6-fold increase in electron mobility (μ_e) for 1 wt % doped device due to simultaneous trap mitigation, lower contact resistance (R_C), and activation energy (E_A), and enhanced crystallinity and edge-on orientation for charge transport. However, the doping of intrinsic pro-quinoidal rNDI-NN/SS films exhibits unchanged or even reduced device performance. These findings allow us to manipulate the energy levels by developing conjugated copolymers based on various acceptors and quinoids and to optimize the dopant-polymer semiconductor interactions and their impacts on the film morphology and molecular orientation for enhanced charge transport.

Porous polymers from octa(amino-phenyl)silsesquioxane and metalloporphyrin as peroxidase-mimicking enzyme for malathion colorimetric sensor

Rapid and efficient pesticide detection methods are particularly important due to the growing problems of pesticide residues. Here, a new azo-based porous organic polymer, Azo(Fe)PPOP, was prepared from octa(amino-phenyl)silsesquioxane (OAPS) and iron(III) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-nitrophenyl)porphyrin (FeTPP(NO₂)₄) via a simple coupling reaction without the participation of metal catalysts. The inorganic cage units of OAPS endowed Azo(Fe)PPOP a porous framework, high surface area, favorably thermal and chemical stability. In Azo(Fe)PPOP, iron(III) porphyrin units were individually isolated in a fixed location, which could effectively avoid dimerization or self-oxidation as happens as in the case of porphyrin monomers. Such a unique structure made Azo(Fe)PPOP exhibit an excellent peroxidase-like catalytic performance in the presence of H₂O₂ and 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). Because of these advantages, we established a selective, facile, and sensitive colorimetric platform for direct detection of malathion within a very short time (3 min) with a low detection limit (8.5 nM). In addition, the recognition mechanism between Azo(Fe)PPOP and malathion was verified using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra. The practicality of the constructed platform was further executed by the detection of the pesticide in soil and food samples.
