Natural Product Inspired Environmentally Friendly Strategy Based on Dopamine Chemistry toward Sustainable Marine Antifouling

Research Progress of Natural Products and Their Derivatives in Marine Antifouling

With the increasing awareness of environmental protection, it is necessary to develop natural product extracts as antifouling (AF) agents for alternatives to toxic biocides or metal-based AF paints to control biofouling. This paper briefly summarizes the latest developments in the natural product extracts and their derivatives or analogues from marine microorganisms to terrestrial plants as AF agents in the last five years. Moreover, this paper discusses the structures-activity relationship of these AF compounds and expands their AF mechanisms. Inspired by the molecular structure of natural products, some derivatives or analogues of natural product extracts and some novel strategies for improving the AF activity of protective coatings have been proposed as guidance for the development of a new generation of environmentally friendly AF agents.

Evaluation of lipophosphoramidates-based amphiphilic compounds on the formation of biofilms of marine bacteria

The bacteriostatic and/or bactericidal properties of few phosphoramide-based amphiphilic compounds on human pathogenic bacteria were previously reported. In this study, the potential of two cationic (BSV36 and KLN47) and two zwitterionic (3 and 4) amphiphiles as inhibitors of marine bacterial growth and biofilm formation were investigated. Results showed that the four compounds have little impact on the growth of a panel of 18 selected marine bacteria at a concentration of 200 µM, and up to 700 µM for some bacterial strains. Interestingly, cationic lipid BSV36 and zwitterionic lipids 3 and 4 effectively disrupt biofilm formation of Paracoccus sp. 4M6 and Vibrio sp. D02 at 200 µM and to a lesser extent of seven other bacterial strains tested. Moreover, ecotoxicological assays on four species of microalgae highlighted that compounds 3 and 4 have little impact on microalgae growth with EC50 values of 51 µM for the more sensitive species and up to 200 µM for most of the others. Amphiphilic compounds, especially zwitterionic amphiphiles 3 and 4 seem to be promising candidates against biofilm formation by marine bacteria.

Cell-membrane-inspired polymers for constructing biointerfaces with efficient molecular recognition

Fabrication of devices that accurately recognize, detect, and separate target molecules from mixtures is a crucial aspect of biotechnology for applications in medical, pharmaceutical, and food sciences. This technology has also been recently applied in solving environmental and energy-related problems. In molecular recognition, biomolecules are typically complexed with a substrate, and specific molecules from a mixture are recognized, captured, and reacted. To increase sensitivity and efficiency, the activity of the biomolecules used for capture should be maintained, and non-specific reactions on the surface should be prevented. This review summarizes polymeric materials that are used for constructing biointerfaces. Precise molecular recognition occurring at the surface of cell membranes is fundamental to sustaining life; therefore, materials that mimic the structure and properties of this particular surface are emphasized in this article. The requirements for biointerfaces to eliminate nonspecific interactions of biomolecules are described. In particular, the major issue of protein adsorption on biointerfaces is discussed by focusing on the structure of water near the interface from a thermodynamic viewpoint; moreover, the structure of polymer molecules that control the water structure is considered. Methodologies enabling stable formation of these interfaces on material surfaces are also presented.
