Bioinspired Polydopamine Coating as an Adhesion Enhancer Between Paraffin Microcapsules and an Epoxy Matrix

Miniaturized 3D-printed hand-operable dispersive sample pretreatment device with replaceable chitosan/polydopamine thin film metal sorbent for enhanced metal analysis

To address the increasing demand for sensitive and selective sample preparation methods for metal analysis; preconcentration of intended analyte from complex sample matrices before analysis is required to improve the performance of analysis instruments. In this study, we have engineered a sustainable and portable syringe-based hand-operable three-dimensionally (3D) printed sample pretreatment apparatus equipped with a replaceable bio-based thin- film metal sorbent. This device effectively addresses the challenges of sample matrix interference in metal analysis. A metal sorbent film composed of chitosan (CS) and polydopamine (PDA) leveraged the diverse functional groups in the CS/PDA matrix to significantly enhance the extraction efficiency for various metals. Our approach demonstrated excellent analytical performance, with coefficients of determination (R2) of 0.9982 for copper (Cu) and 0.996 for chromium (Cr). The method achieved low limits of detection (LOD) of 0.3 μg L-1 for Cr and 0.7 μg L-1 for Cu. Precision and practicality assessments using actual urine samples yielded satisfactory relative standard deviations (RSD%) ranging from of 1.6 %-8.5 % for both metals, indicating minimal interference from the sample matrix. Moreover, our approach exhibited robust performance even after seven consecutive extraction and desorption cycles, highlighting its sustainability and practical applicability for laboratory and on-site sample pretreatment.

Rapid Deposition of the Biomimetic Hydroxyapatite-Polydopamine-Amino Acid Composite Layers onto the Natural Enamel

In this work, we developed a technology that enables rapid deposition of biomimetic composite films onto natural enamel slices (known as biotemplates). These films are composed of polydopamine (PDA) and nanocrystalline carbonate-substituted hydroxyapatite (nano-cHAp) that have been functionalized with amino acid l-Arginine. We utilized atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) combined with infrared (IR) synchrotron to achieve nanoscale spatial resolution for both IR absorption and topography analyses. This combined analytical modality allowed us to understand how morphology connects to local changes in the chemical environment on the biotemplate surface during the deposition of the bioinspired coating. Our findings revealed that when using the proposed technology and after the deposition of the first PDA layer, the film formed on the enamel surface nearly covers the entire surface of the specimen whose thickness is larger on the surface of the emerging enamel prisms. Calculation of the crystallinity index for the biomimetic layer showed a multiple increase compared with natural enamel. This indicates regular and dense aggregation of nano-cHAp into larger crystals, imitating the morphology of natural enamel rods. The microhardness of the formed PDA-based biomimetic layer mineralized with nano-cHAp functionalized with amino acid l-Arginine deposited on natural enamel was practically the same as that of natural enamel. The characterization of nano-cHAp-amino acid-PDA layers using IR and Raman microspectroscopy showed that l-arginine acts as a conjunction agent in the formation of mineralized biomimetic composite coatings. The uniformity of the mechanisms of PDA layer formation under different deposition conditions and substrate types allows for the formation of coatings regardless of the macro- and micromorphology of the template. Therefore, the results obtained in this work have a high potential for future clinical applications in dental practice.

Fabrication and Characterization of a Polydopamine-Modified Bacterial Cellulose and Sugarcane Filter Cake-Derived Hydroxyapatite Composite Scaffold

The search for environmentally friendly and sustainable sources of raw materials has been ongoing for quite a while, and currently, the utilization and applications of agro-industrial biomass residues in biomedicine are being researched. In this study, a polydopamine (PDA)-modified bacterial cellulose (BC) and hydroxyapatite (HA) composite scaffold was fabricated using the freeze-drying method. The as-prepared hydroxyapatite was synthesized via the chemical precipitation method using sugarcane filter cake as a calcium source, as reported in a previous study. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a carbonated phase of the prepared hydroxyapatite, similar to that of the natural bone mineral. Wide-angle X-ray scattering analysis revealed the successful fabrication of BC/HA composite scaffolds, while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggested that PDA was deposited on the surface of the BC/HA composite scaffolds. In vitro cell viability assays indicated that BC/HA and PDA-modified composite scaffolds did not induce cytotoxicity and were biocompatible with MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts. PDA-modified composite scaffolds showed enhanced protein adsorption capacity in vitro compared to the unmodified scaffolds. On a concluding note, these results demonstrate that agro-industrial biomass residues have the potential to be used in biomedical applications and that PDA-modified BC/HA composite scaffolds are a promising biomaterial for bone tissue engineering.

System for Patterning Polydopamine and VAPG Peptide on Polytetrafluoroethylene and Biodegradable Polyesters for Patterned Growth of Smooth Muscle Cells In Vitro

Biomaterial's surface functionalization for selective adhesion and patterned cell growth remains essential in developing novel implantable medical devices for regenerative medicine applications. We built and applied a 3D-printed microfluidic device to fabricate polydopamine (PDA) patterns on the surface of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), poly(l-lactic acid-co-D,l-lactic acid) (PLA), and poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA). Then, we covalently attached the Val-Ala-Pro-Gly (VAPG) peptide to the created PDA pattern to promote the adhesion of the smooth muscle cells (SMCs). We proved that the fabrication of PDA patterns allows for the selective adhesion of mouse fibroblast and human SMCs to PDA-patterned surfaces after only 30 min of in vitro cultivation. After 7 days of SMC culture, we observed the proliferation of cells only along the patterns on PTFE but over the entire surface of the PLA and PLGA, regardless of patterning. This means that the presented approach is beneficial for application to materials resistant to cell adhesion and proliferation. The additional attachment of the VAPG peptide to the PDA patterns did not bring measurable benefits due to the high increase in adhesion and patterned cell proliferation by PDA itself.

Composite microgranular scaffolds with surface modifications for improved initial osteoblastic cell proliferation

Polyester-based granular scaffolds are a potent material for tissue engineering due to their porosity, controllable pore size, and potential to be molded into various shapes. Additionally, they can be produced as composite materials, e.g., mixed with osteoconductive β-tricalcium phosphate or hydroxyapatite. Such polymer-based composite materials often happen to be hydrophobic, which disrupts cell attachment and decreases cell growth on the scaffold, undermining its primary function. In this work, we propose the experimental comparison of three modification techniques for granular scaffolds to increase their hydrophilicity and cell attachment. Those techniques include atmospheric plasma treatment, polydopamine coating, and polynorepinephrine coating. Composite polymer/β-tricalcium phosphate granules have been produced in a solution-induced phase separation (SIPS) process using commercially available biomedical polymers: poly(lactic acid), poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), and polycaprolactone. We used thermal assembly to prepare cylindrical scaffolds from composite microgranules. Atmospheric plasma treatment, polydopamine coating, and polynorepinephrine coating showed similar effects on polymer composites' hydrophilic and bioactive properties. All modifications significantly increased human osteosarcoma MG-63 cell adhesion and proliferation in vitro compared to cells cultured on unmodified materials. In the case of polycaprolactone/β-tricalcium phosphate scaffolds, modifications were the most necessary, as unmodified polycaprolactone-based material disrupted the cell attachment. Modified polylactide/β-tricalcium phosphate scaffold supported excellent cell growth and showed ultimate compressive strength exceeding this of human trabecular bone. This suggests that all investigated modification techniques can be used interchangeably for increasing wettability and cell attachment properties of various scaffolds for medical applications, especially those with high surface and volumetric porosity, like granular scaffolds.

High-Flux lamellar MoSe2 membranes for efficient dye/salt separation

Membrane-based technology is emerging as an efficient technique for wastewater treatment in recent years. Membranes made up of two-dimensional materials provide high selectivity and water flux compared to conventional polymeric membranes. Herein, we report the synthesis and use of MoSe₂ membrane for dye and drug separation in wastewater, mainly from textile and pharmaceutical industries. The as-prepared MoSe₂ membrane shows ∼ 100% rejection for organic dyes and ciprofloxacin drug with a water flux reaching up to ∼ 900 Lm^-2h^-1bar^-1. Further, the MoSe₂ membrane shows lower NaCl rejection of ∼ 1.9% for the dye/salt mixture. The interlayer spacing in the MoSe₂ membrane allows the water molecules and ions from the salt to pass through freely but restricts the movement of large contaminants. The membrane is stable against the bovine albumin serum fouling with a flux recovery rate of 96%. It also shows good performance even in harsh environments (pH 3-10). To the best of our knowledge, the MoSe₂ membranes were fabricated for the first time for wastewater treatment application. The dye/salt separation performance of the MoSe₂ membrane is significantly better than several other membranes. This work highlights the promising potential for using two-dimensional materials for textile and pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

Design of Reservoirs Enabling Stress-Induced Sequential Release Systems

Mechanical stress is recognized as a principle for opening enclosed compartments through compression, stretching, or shear, eventually resulting in the onset of a diffusion-controlled release. Here, we hypothesized that the geometrical design of cavities (cut-outs) introduced as containers in elastic polymer substrates and sealed with a brittle coating layer would enable a pre-defined release of different compounds by stress concentration phenomena. Design criteria such as cut-out shapes, orientations, and depths were initially assessed for suitably different stress concentrations in computational models. In substrates fabricated from polydimethylsiloxane by photolithographic techniques, the local strains at horizontal rectangular, circular, and vertical rhombus-shaped cut-outs systematically increased under horizontal stretching as proposed. When filled with model compounds and coated with poly(n-butyl cyanoacrylate), a pre-defined induced breakage of the coating and compound release was confirmed upon continuous uniaxial stretching. This proof of concept demonstrates how device design and functions interlink and may motivate further exploration in technology and medicine for deformation-induced on-demand dosage applications.

Electrophoretic fabrication of a robust chitosan/polyethylene glycol/polydopamine composite film for UV-shielding application

The film-forming process of chitosan composite films is an important issue because it affects their experimental design, chemicals used, and feasibility of large-scaled fabrication. In this work, electrophoresis is employed to produce chitosan composite films with significantly reduced processing time and environmentally friendly chemicals. With the addition of hydrogen peroxide and polyethylene glycol, the parasitic hydrogen bubble formation during the electrophoresis of chitosan and polydopamine is effectively inhibited that leads to the formation of a defectless chitosan/polyethylene glycol/polydopamine composite film which could be removed from the substrate readily. In addition, the chitosan/polyethylene glycol/polydopamine composite film reveals significantly improved tensile strength and a slower decomposition rate as compared to those of chitosan film and chitosan/polyethylene glycol composite film. This is attributed to the strong interaction between chitosan and polydopamine. Lastly, the chitosan/polyethylene glycol/polydopamine composite film exhibits excellent UV-shielding ability without compromising its visible transparency.

Suitability of EtO Sterilization for Polydopamine-coated, Self-fitting Bone Scaffolds

Irregularly shaped craniomaxillofacial (CMF) defects may be advantageously treated by "self-fitting" shape memory polymer (SMP) scaffolds, namely those prepared from poly(ε-caprolactone)diacrylate (PCL-DA) networks and PCL-DA/poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) (75:25 wt%) semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs). In addition to achieving good scaffold-tissue contact, a polydopamine (PD) coating can be leveraged to enhance bioactivity for improved osseointegration. Sterilization with ethylene oxide (EtO) represents a logical choice due to its low operating temperature and humidity. Herein, for the first time, the impact of EtO sterilization on the material properties of PD-coated SMP scaffolds was systematically assessed. Morphological features (i.e., pore size and pore interconnectivity), and in vitro bioactivity were preserved as were PCL crystallinity, PLLA crystallinity, and crosslinking. These latter features led to sustained shape memory properties, and compressive modulus. EtO-sterilized, PD-coated scaffolds displayed similar in vitro degradation behaviors versus analogous non-sterilized scaffolds. This included maintenance of compression modulus following 28 days of exposure to non-accelerated degradation conditions.

Copper Electroless Metallization of Cellulose Paper via Polydopamine Coating and Silver Catalyst

The paper presents the results of copper electroless metallization of cellulose paper with the use of a polydopamine coating and silver catalyst. The polydopamine coating was deposited via a simple dip method using a dopamine hydrochloride solution in 10 mM TRIS-HCl buffer with a pH of 8.5. The research showed that as a result of this process, cellulose fibers were covered with a homogeneous layer of polydopamine. The unique properties of the polydopamine coating allowed the reduction of silver ions from silver nitrate solution and the deposition of silver atoms on the paper surface. Deposited silver served as a catalyst in the autocatalytic electroless copper-plating process. The copper layer covered the entire surface of the paper sheet after 5 min of metallization, favorably affecting the electrical properties of this material by lowering the surface resistivity. The deposited copper layer was further characterized by good adhesive strength and high susceptibility to deformation.

Nanomedicine for increasing the oral bioavailability of cancer treatments

Abstract

Oral administration is an appealing route of delivering cancer treatments. However, the gastrointestinal tract is characterized by specific and efficient physical, chemical, and biological barriers that decrease the bioavailability of medications, including chemotherapeutics. In recent decades, the fields of material science and nanomedicine have generated several delivery platforms with high potential for overcoming multiple barriers associated to oral administration. This review describes the properties of several nanodelivery systems that improve the bioavailability of orally administered therapeutics, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages in generating successful anticancer oral nanomedicines.

Wood-Derived Composites with High Performance for Thermal Management Applications

Fabricating advanced polymer composites with remarkable mechanical and thermal conductivity performances is desirable for developing advanced devices and equipment. In this study, a novel strategy to prepare anisotropic wood-based scaffolds with a naturally aligned microchannel structure from balsa wood is demonstrated. The wood microchannels were coated with polydopamine-surface-modified small graphene oxide (PGO) nanosheets via assembly. The highly aligned porous microstructures, with thin wood cell walls and large voids along the cellulose microchannels, allow polymers to enter, resulting in the fabrication of the wood-polymer nanocomposite. The tensile stiffness and strength of the resulting nanocomposite reach 8.10 GPa and 90.3 MPa with a toughness of 5.0 MJ m^-3. The thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite is improved significantly by coating a PGO layer onto the wood scaffolds. The nanocomposite exhibits not only ultrahigh thermal conductivity (in-plane about 5.5 W m^-1 K^-1 and through-plane about 2.1 W m^-1 K^-1) but also satisfactory electrical insulation (volume resistivity of about 10¹⁵ Ω·cm). Therefore, the results provide a strategy to fabricate thermal management materials with excellent mechanical properties.

Aqueous dispersion and tuning surface charges of polytetrafluoroethylene particles by bioinspired polydopamine-polyethyleneimine coating via one-step method

We propose a surface modification of poorly dispersive polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) particles via bioinspired polydopamine-polyethyleneimine (PDA-PEI) which conferred PTFE particles a uniform dispersion in aqueous medium. With increasing dopamine concentration in the reaction solution, dispersity of PTFE particles improved and the surface charges of particles changed from negative to positive due to an increase of surface coverage of PDA-PEI layers. Simplicity of the method here outlines an attractive route for surface modification of inert surfaces useful for large-scale applications.

Thermophysical Properties of Multifunctional Syntactic Foams Containing Phase Change Microcapsules for Thermal Energy Storage

Syntactic foams (SFs) combining an epoxy resin and hollow glass microspheres (HGM) feature a unique combination of low density, high mechanical properties, and low thermal conductivity which can be tuned according to specific applications. In this work, the versatility of epoxy/HGM SFs was further expanded by adding a microencapsulated phase change material (PCM) providing thermal energy storage (TES) ability at a phase change temperature of 43 °C. At this aim, fifteen epoxy (HGM/PCM) compositions with a total filler content (HGM + PCM) of up to 40 vol% were prepared and characterized. The experimental results were fitted with statistical models, which resulted in ternary diagrams that visually represented the properties of the ternary systems and simplified trend identification. Dynamic rheological tests showed that the PCM increased the viscosity of the epoxy resin more than HGM due to the smaller average size (20 µm vs. 60 µm) and that the systems containing both HGM and PCM showed lower viscosity than those containing only one filler type, due to the higher packing efficiency of bimodal filler distributions. HGM strongly reduced the gravimetric density and the thermal insulation properties. In fact, the sample with 40 vol% of HGM showed a density of 0.735 g/cm³ (−35% than neat epoxy) and a thermal conductivity of 0.12 W/(m∙K) (−40% than neat epoxy). Moreover, the increase in the PCM content increased the specific phase change enthalpy, which was up to 68 J/g for the sample with 40 vol% of PCM, with a consequent improvement in the thermal management ability that was also evidenced by temperature profiling tests in transient heating and cooling regimes. Finally, dynamical mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) showed that both fillers decreased the storage modulus but generally increased the storage modulus normalized by density (E′/ρ) up to 2440 MPa/(g/cm³) at 25 °C with 40 vol% of HGM (+48% than neat epoxy). These results confirmed that the main asset of these ternary multifunctional syntactic foams is their versatility, as the composition can be tuned to reach the property set that best matches the application requirements in terms of TES ability, thermal insulation, and low density.

Bio-inspired deposition of electrochemically exfoliated graphene layers for electrical resistance heating applications

Electrochemically exfoliated graphene (eeG) layers possess a variety of potential applications, e.g. as susceptor material for contactless induction heating in dynamic electro-magnetic fields, and as flexible and transparent electrode or resistivity heating elements. Spray coating of eeG dispersions was investigated in detail as a simple and fast method to deposit both, thin conducting layers and ring structures on polycarbonate substrates. The spray coating process was examined by systematic variation of dispersion concentration and volume applied to heated substrates. Properties of the obtained layers were characterized by UV-VIS spectroscopy, SEM and Confocal Scanning Microscopy. Electrical conductivity of eeG ring structures was measured using micro-four-point measurements. Modification of eeG with poly(dopamine) and post-thermal treatment yields in the reduction of the oxidized graphene proportion, an increase in electrical conductivity, and mechanical stabilization of the deposited thin layers. The chemical composition of modified eeG layer was analyzed via x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy pointing to the reductive behavior of poly(dopamine). Application oriented experiments demonstrate the direct electric current heating (Joule-Heating) effect of spray-coated eeG layers.

Polydopamine-Coated Paraffin Microcapsules as a Multifunctional Filler Enhancing Thermal and Mechanical Performance of a Flexible Epoxy Resin

This work focuses on flexible epoxy (EP) composites containing various amounts of neat and polydopamine (PDA)-coated paraffin microcapsules as a phase change material (PCM), which have potential applications as adhesives or flexible interfaces with thermal management capability for electronics or other high-value-added fields. After PDA modification, the surface of PDA-coated capsules (MC-PDA) becomes rough with a globular appearance, and the PDA layer enhances the adhesion with the surrounding epoxy matrix, as shown by scanning electron microscopy. PDA deposition parameters have been successfully tuned to obtain a PDA layer with a thickness of 53 ± 8 nm, and the total PDA mass in MC-PDA is only 2.2 wt %, considerably lower than previous results. This accounts for the fact that the phase change enthalpy of MC-PDA is only marginally lower than that of neat microcapsules (MC), being 221.1 J/g and 227.7 J/g, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry shows that the phase change enthalpy of the prepared composites increases with the capsule content (up to 87.8 J/g) and that the enthalpy of the composites containing MC-PDA is comparable to that of the composites with MC. Dynamic mechanical analysis evidences a decreasing step in the storage modulus of all composites at the glass transition of the EP phase, but no additional signals are detected at the PCM melting. PCM addition positively contributes to the storage modulus both at room temperature and above Tg of the EP phase, and this effect is more evident for composites containing MC-PDA. As the capsule content increases, the mechanical properties of the host EP matrix also increase in terms of elastic modulus (up to +195%), tensile strength (up to +42%), Shore D hardness (up to +36%), and creep compliance (down to −54% at 60 min). These effects are more evident for composites containing MC-PDA due to the enhanced interfacial adhesion.
