Application, Synthesis, and Characterization of Cationic Galactomannan from Ruderal Species as a Wet Strength Additive and Flocculating Agent

Enhancing Cross-Linking Network for Superior Wet Strength of Paper by Sustainable Hyperbranched Polyimines

The paper industry has long been a crucial part of our lives, providing printing materials, tissue paper, and packaging products. However, the low wet strength of commercially available paper limits its application in packaging, particularly when it comes into contact with liquids. To address this issue, researchers have explored various strategies, including the use of wet strength agents. The most widely used agent, polyamide-epichlorohydrin resin (PAE), has limitations, such as poor dimensional stability and limited recyclability. Additionally, PAE can release harmful chlorinated organics. To overcome these challenges, we report a novel approach using a hyperbranched wet strength agent (referred to as "OA-PI") based on the cross-linking of oxidized amylopectin from waxy corn and polyamines through the Schiff base reaction. The hyperbranched structure of OA-PI provides multiple binding sites, enhancing the cross-linking strength of cellulosic paper under wet conditions. The paper treated with OA-PI exhibited exceptional wet strength, significantly higher than that of PAE-treated paper and paper with traditional starch-based additives. Moreover, the biomass-based OA-PI showed improved recyclability and reduced harm from chlorinated organic compounds. This study not only enhances the wet strength of paper but also opens sustainable avenues for the design of functional adhesives.

Addressing the sustainability challenges for polymers in liquid formulations

Polymers in liquid formulations, or PLFs, are present in many of the products we use, from the shampoo we use to wash our hair, to the paint on the walls, and the lubricants in our car. They provide high functionality in these and a multitude of other applications, delivering many positive benefits to society. They are essential to global markets worth more than $1 trillion and so large quantities of these materials are made and sold each year - 36.3 million metric tonnes, the volume of 14 500 Olympic sized swimming pools! The chemical industry and the wider supply chain therefore have a responsibility to ensure that the way PLFs are made, used and disposed of at their end of life has a minimal effect on the environment. To date this seems to be a 'hidden problem', not receiving the same attention as other polymer related products, such as plastic packaging waste, yet there are clear challenges to address the sustainability concerns for these materials. To ensure that the PLF industry is economically and environmentally sustainable in the future, some key challenges need to be addressed, ensuring that new approaches to PLF production, use and end-of-life treatment are developed and utilised. Collaboration is key here, and with the UK already possessing a wealth of world-leading expertise and capability, there is an opportunity to leverage this in a coherent, focussed way to improve the overall environmental profile of these products.

Properties of galactomannans and their textile-related applications-A concise review

Galactomannans are reserve carbohydrates in legume plants and are primarily extracted from their seeds. They contain galactose side chains throughout the mannose backbone and have unique features such as emulsifying, thickening, and gelling together with biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity, which make them an appealing material. Guar gum and locust bean gum mainly are used in all galactomannan needed applications. Nonetheless, tara gum and fenugreek gum have also attracted considerable attention in recent decades. Despite the increased usage of galactomannans in the textile-related fields in recent years, there is no review article published yet. To fill this gap and to demonstrate the striking and increasing importance of galactomannans, a concise summary of the properties of common galactomannans and their comparisons is given first, followed by an account of recent developments and applications of galactomannans in the textile-related fields. The associated potential opportunities are also provided at the end of this review.

Synergistic studies of Cassia tora gum with xanthan and guar gum: Carboxymethyl synthesis of cassia gum-xanthan synergistic blend and characterization

The present study describes the study of synergistic behavior of the Cassia tora (CTG) gum with xanthan gum (XG) and comparison with CTG and guar gum (GG) at varying temperatures. A carboxymethyl derivative of CTG: XG blend, having synergistic activity was synthesized and the reaction conditions were optimized using Taguchi's L'9 statistical design. The effect of solvent medium on the degree of substitution (DS) and the gelling property was also studied. The results reveal that synergistic interaction was found in the CTG: XG mixture whereas CTG: GG blend did not show synergistic behavior. The CTG: XG blend shows a highly viscous solution having 8371.9 cps viscosity at ambient temperature and gel is obtained by heating the blending solution and thereafter lowering the temperature. In continuum, an optimized carboxymethyl derivative (DS 0.16) also exhibits gelling properties. The carboxymethyl derivative was characterized by ¹H NMR, FTIR spectroscopy and FESEM analysis. The synergistic action of gums may be utilized in food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical applications.
