Preparation of the WO X /MCM-41 Solid Acid Catalyst and the Catalytic Performance for Solketal Synthesis

Glycerol carbonate synthesis via transesterification of enriched glycerol and dimethyl carbonate using a Li-incorporated MCM-41 framework

Waste crude glycerol was successfully enriched and utilized as an inexpensive source for producing value-added chemicals, such as glycerol carbonate (GC) - a valuable compound with extensive industrial applications. The Li/MCM-41 heterogeneous catalyst was synthesized and used for the transesterification of enriched glycerol and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) to produce GC. The catalyst's physicochemical properties were characterized using thermogravimetric, Hammett indicator, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analyses. Reaction conditions were optimized using response surface methodology and analysis of variance, yielding an accurate quadratic model to predict the GC yield under different transesterification variables. The results revealed that 5%Li/MCM-41 served as the optimal catalyst, achieving the highest TOF of 4.72 h-1. The DMC: enriched glycerol molar ratio had the greatest impact on the GC yield, with an R2 = 0.9743 and adjusted R2 = 0.9502. The optimal GC yield (58.77%) with a final purity of 78% was attained at a 5.15 wt% catalyst loading relative to the initial amount of enriched glycerol, DMC: enriched glycerol molar ratio of 4.24 : 1, and a reaction temperature of 86 °C for 165 min. The 5%Li/MCM-41 heterogeneous catalyst could be reused for four cycles with a decreased GC yield from 58.77% to 45.72%. Thus, the Li/MCM-41 catalyst demonstrated a remarkable efficiency and potential as a heterogeneous catalyst for synthesizing GC. This method not only contributes to environmental sustainability by making use of a byproduct from biodiesel production but also aligns with the principles of a circular economy.

Reactivity of Group 5 and 6 Single-Site Photocatalysts for Partial Oxidation of Methane: Comparison of Chromium, Niobium, and Tungsten-Doped Mesoporous Amorphous Silica

Single-site transition-metal-doped photocatalysts can potentially be used for partial oxidation of methane (POM) at remote sites where natural gas is extracted and methane is often flared or released to the atmosphere. While there have been several investigations into the performance of vanadium, there has been no general survey of the performance of other metals. This work aims and examines Cr, Nb, and W metal oxide materials embedded in amorphous SiO2 to determine the viability of each metal in catalyzing the POM. Photoexcited states are examined to determine the nature of the photoactivated species, and then the subsequent POM reaction mechanisms are elucidated. Using the calculated energies of reaction intermediates and transition states, the rate of methanol formation is evaluated through the use of a microkinetic model. The findings indicate that all three metals are potentially more suitable for catalyzing POM than vanadium but that niobium shows the most favorable energy profile.

Activated Bentonite Nanocomposite for the Synthesis of Solketal from Glycerol in the Liquid Phase

Activated bentonites are low-cost acid catalysts used in several reactions. However, their application at an industrial scale is affected by the formation of colloidal suspensions when these bentonites are in aqueous solutions. In order to overcome these limitations, this work proposes obtaining a catalyst based on a composite containing natural bentonite within a silica–resin structure, which allows separating and re-utilizing the catalyst more easily and without centrifugal filtration requirements. By means of characterization techniques, the present study determined that the activated bentonite composite presented a total specific surface area of ~360 m2 g−1, ~4 mmol of acid sites per gram of bentonite, and sites with strong acid strength, all of which bestowed activity and selectivity in the solketal synthesis reaction from glycerol and acetone, reaching equilibrium conversion within a short reaction time. Furthermore, the present work developed a Langmuir–Hinshelwood–Hougen–Watson kinetic model, achieving an activation energy of 50.3 ± 3.6 kJ mol−1 and a pre-exponential factor of 6.4 × 106 mol g−1 L−1 s−1, which are necessary for reactor design.
