Mineral and Technological Features of Magnetite-Hematite Ores and Their Influence on the Choice of Processing Technology

Chemical Analysis of Hematite Ore Collected from Pokhari, Nawalparasi, Nepal

Iron is the principal raw material for steel industries and Hematite is a principal ore of iron. Quantitative and qualitative estimation of iron in its ores is a crucial factor before its extraction. In this work, quantitative chemical analysis of iron was carried out from the collected seventy-two hematite samples from Pokhari, Nawalparasi. Sampling of the hematite ore was performed by channel sampling method. Chemical analysis was carried out by gravimetric, titrimetric, UV-Vis spectrophotometric and atomic absorption spectroscopic methods. The findings of different parameters in percentage areas follows: loss on ignition (1.76 ± 0.17), silica (47.06 ± 4.01), and iron (36.75 ± 2.50) by titrimetric analysis. Based on the chemical analysis, the Fe content in the collected hematite sample is in intermediate range. Thus, for the profitable iron extraction, other factors such as coverage of ores, extraction costs, and market value should be considered.

Systematic Investigation of Structural, Morphological, Thermal, Optoelectronic, and Magnetic Properties of High-Purity Hematite/Magnetite Nanoparticles for Optoelectronics

Iron oxide nanoparticles, especially hematite (α-Fe₂O₃) and magnetite (Fe₃O₄) have attained substantial research interest in various applications of green and sustainable energy harnessing owing to their exceptional opto-magneto-electrical characteristics and non-toxicity. In this study, we synthesized high-purity hematite and magnetite nanoparticles from a facile top-down approach by employing a high-energy ball mill followed by ultrasonication. A systematic investigation was then carried out to explore the structural, morphological, thermal, optoelectrical, and magnetic properties of the synthesized samples. The experimental results from scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction corroborated the formation of highly crystalline hematite and magnetite nanoparticles with average sizes of ~80 nm and ~50 nm, respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed remarkable results on the thermal stability of the newly synthesized samples. The optical studies confirmed the formation of a single-phase compound with the bandgaps dependent on the size of the nanoparticles. The electrochemical studies that utilized cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques verified these iron oxide nanoparticles as electroactive species which can enhance the charge transfer process with high mobility. The hysteresis curves of the samples revealed the paramagnetic behavior of the samples with high values of coercivity. Thus, these optimized materials can be recommended for use in future optoelectronic devices and can prove to be potential candidates in the advanced research of new optoelectronic materials for improved energy devices.

Microstructural Master Alloys Features of Aluminum–Erbium System

Aluminum master alloys with rare earth metals are widely studied by many scientists around the world, but research on the production of Al-Er master alloys is still limited. The purpose of this work is to study the microstructure parameters of aluminum-erbium master alloys obtained by metallothermic reduction of salt mixtures containing erbium oxide or fluoride. The structural features were investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopy, and the dependence of the microhardness of the eutectic and solid solution fields of obtained master alloys on the content of erbium in the master alloy was determined. Studies have shown that master alloys obtained by metallothermic reduction of erbium compounds from chloride–fluoride melts are characterized by a uniform distribution of Al3Er intermetallic compounds in the volume of double eutectic [(Al) + Al3Er] and have a strong grain refinement effect. The analysis of the microstructure showed that the structure of the master alloys varies depending on the content of erbium. When the content of erbium in the master alloy is up to 6 wt.%, the eutectic structure is preserved. When the content of erbium in the master alloy is 8 wt.% or more, the structure becomes a solid solution with individual inclusions of various shapes and intermetallic compounds.
