Use of copper-functionalized cotton waste in combined chemical and biological processes for production of valuable chemical compounds

Cotton textiles modified with copper compounds have a documented mechanism of antimicrobial action against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was pronounced interest in finding new solutions for textile engineering, using modifiers and bioactive methods of functionalization, including introducing copper nanoparticles and complexes into textile products (e.g. masks, special clothing, surface coverings, or tents). However, copper can be toxic, depending on its form and concentration. Functionalized waste may present a risk to the environment if not managed correctly. Here, we present a model for managing copper-modified cotton textile waste. The process includes pressure and temperature-assisted hydrolysis and use of the hydrolysates as a source of sugars for cultivating yeast and lactic acid bacteria biomass as valuable chemical compounds.

Phosphomolybdic acid hydrate encapsulated in MIL-53 (Fe): a novel heterogeneous heteropoly acid catalyst for ultrasound-assisted regioselective nitration of phenols

In this study, a heterogeneous catalyst, PMA@MIL-53 (Fe) (MIL ⇒ Matériaux de l'Institut Lavoisier), has been used to replace the usual mineral acids such as sulfuric acid. A wide variety of nitration methods require the use of a mixture of acids such as concentrated nitric acid and sulfuric acid, which result in producing a large amount of acidic waste. During recent years, the use of the heterogeneous system for the nitration of aromatic compounds has been highly considered and used by chemists due to some specific advantages, i.e. easy separation of the product from the reaction mixture, the possibility of recycling and reusing the catalyst, etc. Herein, the catalyst was synthesized using a metal-organic framework and a heteropoly phosphomolybdic acid. The PMA@MIL-53 (Fe) was prepared using a similar method of MIL-53 (Fe) synthesis. Afterwards, FeCl3·6H2O and 1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid (BDC) in a dimethylformamide solution were placed in an ultrasound bath and, then, HPA (heteropoly acid) was added to the reaction mixture. The PMA (phosphomolybdic acid) encapsulation in MIL-53 (Fe) was confirmed using various analysis. Under optimal conditions, the catalytic activity of PMA@MIL-53 (Fe) was evaluated in nitration of phenol under ultrasonic waves. Besides, the ratio of the two products of ortho and para was obtained using GC. Optimum conditions were reached after 15 minutes, in such a way that the loaded PMA was 0.02 g under optimal conditions, the efficiencies of ortho-nitrophenol and para nitrophenol were 54.98 and 45.01, respectively.

Thermogravimetry Applied for Investigation of Coke Formation in Ethanol Conversion over Heteropoly Tungstate Catalysts

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to evaluate the thermal stability and the amount of coke deposition resulting from the deactivation of catalysts during ethanol dehydration reaction in a fixed bed continuous flow reactor. In this study, a series of catalysts containing 30% of Pd doped and pure 12-tungstophosphoric acid and its insoluble Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40 salt supported on SBA-15 were prepared. The catalytic efficiency of ethanol dehydration reaction was also evaluated. Two types of coke are identified from the TPO (Temperature programmed oxidation) profiles and assigned to the coke precursor and hard coke, respectively. The results indicate that cesium salts reduced the formation of hard coke. The amount of total coke formed was significantly reduced by supporting the catalysts on mesoporous SBA-15 molecular sieves.

Solvent-Induced Selectivity of Isoprene From Bio-Derived Prenol

In this work we demonstrate the selective catalytic conversion of prenol, which is an allylic alcohol that can be prepared from renewable resources to isoprene. The catalyst is an inexpensive molybdenum complex (Molyvan L) designed and used as an additive for lubricants. Isoprene is generated under relatively mild reaction parameters at 130–150°C, for 2 h, under vapor pressure conditions that do not exceed 50 psi. Two cases were studied: one in which Molyvan L was dissolved in a base oil at 1% concentration (weight/weight) and then mixed with a solvent and prenol and the other in which neat Molyvan L was introduced in the reaction and the base oil was replaced with the solvent and prenol. We investigated the selectivity of the reaction using the following solvents in both cases: dodecane, dodecanol, isododecane, octane, blendstock for oxygenate blending (BOB3), a fuel surrogate, a polyalphaolefin (PAO4), and methoxy polyethylene glycol (methoxy PEG350). Although conversion of prenol was above 94% in all experiments, isoprene was formed with various degrees of efficiency alongside a prenol isomeric alcohol, diprenyl ether and mixed ether via intramolecular and intermolecular dehydration reactions. Dodecane appeared to have the highest level of selectivity initially in base oil so we studied the effect of various dodecane-like solvents on isoprene yield and product profile. Surprisingly, octane (similar to dodecane) and isododecane (branched alkane) generated insignificant amounts of byproducts, essentially providing the highly desired isoprene with a very high selectivity. Branching of the solvent does not appear to have an effect on selectivity. Another advantage of this catalyst is the low loadings required to effect the transformation; that is, 0.25% (weight/volume) in the cases using neat Molyvan L and 0.5% (weight/volume) in the cases using Molyvan L dissolved in the base oil. Provided that prenol can be produced in large scale from bioresources, this work would enable the sustainable production of isoprene, in good yield, and with very high selectivity.

Synthesis, Characterizations and Catalysis of Sulfated Silica and Nickel Modified Silica Catalysts for Diethyl Ether (DEE) Production from Ethanol towards Renewable Energy Applications

Sulfated silica (SO4/SiO2) and nickel impregnated sulfated silica (Ni-SO4/SiO2) catalysts have been successfully carried out for the conversion of ethanol into diethyl ether (DEE) as a biofuel. The aims of this research were to study the effects of acidity on the SO4/SiO2 and Ni-SO4/SiO2 catalysts in the conversion of ethanol into diethyl ether. This study focuses on the increases in activity and selectivity of SiO2 with the impregnation of sulfate and Ni metal, which had good activity and acidity and were less expensive. The SO4/SiO2 catalysts were prepared using TEOS (Tetraethyl Orthosilicate) as a precursor and sulfuric acid with various concentrations (1, 2, 3, 4 M). The results showed that SO4/SiO2 acid catalyst treated with 2 M H2SO4 and calcined at 400 °C (SS-2-400) was the catalyst with highest total acidity (2.87 g/mmol), while the impregnation of Ni metal showed the highest acidity value at 3%/Ni-SS-2 catalyst (4.89 g/mmol). The SS-2-400 and 3%/Ni-SS-2 catalysts were selected and applied in the ethanol dehydration process into diethyl ether at temperatures 175, 200, and 225 °C. The activity and selectivity of SS-2-400 and 3%/Ni-SS-2 catalysts shown the conversion of ethanol reached up to 9.54% with good selectivity towards diethyl ether liquid product formation.
