Imidazolatic-Framework Bimetal Electrocatalysts with a Mixed-Valence Surface Anchored on an rGO Matrix for Oxygen Reduction, Water Splitting, and Dye Degradation

One-Step Electrodeposition of a Mesoporous Ni/Co-Imidazole-Based Bimetal-Organic Framework on Pyramid-like NiSb with Abundant Coupling Interfaces as an Ultra-Stable Heterostructural Electrocatalyst for Water Splitting

The exploration of highly efficient metal-organic framework (MOF)-based electrocatalysts is a research topic of high significance owing to their potential applications in sustainable and clean energy production. Herein, a mesoporous MOF containing Ni and Co nodes along with 2-methylimidazole (Hmim) ligands has been directly grown on the surface of the pyramid-like NiSb through a convenient cathodic electrodeposition strategy and evaluated as the catalyst for water splitting catalysis. Tailoring catalytically active sites through porous well-arranging architecture and the coupled interface offers a catalyst with exquisite performance that displays ultra-low Tafel constant of 33 and 42 mV dec^-1 toward the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, sequentially, and also enhanced durability at high current densities over 150 h in a 1 M KOH medium. The success of the synthesized NiCo-MOF@NiSb@GB electrode is explained by the intimate contact between the NiCo-MOF and NiSb with well-tailored phase interfaces, the positive coupling effect between Ni and Co metal centers in the MOF, and the porous structure with abundant active sites toward electrocatalysis. Importantly, the present work provides a new technical reference for the electrochemical synthesis of heterostructural MOFs as a promising candidate for energy-related applications.

N,S-co-doped FeCo Nanoparticles Supported on Porous Carbon Nanofibers as Efficient and Durable Oxygen Reduction Catalysts

Finding high-performance, low-cost, efficient catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) is essential for sustainable energy conversion systems. Herein, highly efficient and durable iron (Fe) and cobalt (Co)-supported nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) co-doped three-dimensional carbon nanofibers (FeCo-N, S@CNFs) were synthesized via electrospinning followed by carbonization. The as-prepared FeCo-N,S@CNFs served as efficient ORR catalysts in alkaline 0.1 m KOH solutions that were N₂ and O₂ -saturated. The experimental results revealed that FeCo-N,S@CNFs were highly active ORR catalysts with defect-rich active pyridinic N and pyrrolic N and metal bonds to N and S atom sites, which enhanced the ORR activity. FeCo-N,S@CNFs exhibited a high onset potential (E_onset =0.89 V) and half-wave potential (E_1/2 =0.85 V), similar to the electrocatalytic activity of commercial Pt/C. Additionally, the durability of the as-prepared FeCo-N,S@CNFs catalysts was maintained for 14 h with long-term stability and high tolerance to methanol stability, accounting for their excellent catalytic ability. Furthermore, Co-N@CNFs, Fe-N@CNFs, and varying Fe and Co ratios were compared with those of FeCo-N,S@CNFs. Synergistic interactions between metals and heteroatoms were believed to play a significant role in enhancing the ORR activity. Owing to their excellent catalytic reduction ability, the as-prepared FeCo-N,S@CNFs can be widely used in battery-based systems and replace commercial Pt/C in fuel cell applications.

Ultrathin Two-Dimensional Bimetal-Organic Framework Nanosheets as High-Performance Electrocatalysts for Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation

Ultrathin two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (2D MOFs) have the potential to improve the oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BA) with a large surface area and open catalytic active sites. To achieve high-efficiency electrocatalysts for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol, a moderate solvothermal method was evolved to synthesize a series of 2D MOFs on nickel foam (Ni-MOF/NF, NiCo-61-MOF/NF, NiCo-21-MOF/NF). As the electrocatalyst used for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol, NiCo-61-MOF/NF presented a lower overpotential and superior chemical durability than other electrocatalysts; it only required a potential of ∼1.52 V (vs RHE) to reach 338.16 mA cm^-2, with an oxidation efficiency of more than 86%. Besides, after continuous electrocatalysis for 20 000 s at 1.42 V (vs RHE), the current density of NiCo-61-MOF/NF nanosheets was still 38.67 mA cm^-2 with 77.34% retention. This demonstrated that NiCo-61-MOF/NF nanosheet electrocatalysts had great potential for benzyl alcohol oxidation. From both the experimental and theoretical studies, it was discovered that NiCo-61-MOF/NF nanosheets have the highest electrocatalytic activity due to their distinctive ultrathin 2D structure, optimized electron structure, and more accessible active sites. This finding would pave a brand-new thought for the design of electrocatalysts with electrocatalytic activity for benzyl alcohol oxidation (EBO).
