Sustainable Polypropylene-Based Composites with Agro-Waste Fillers: Thermal, Morphological, Mechanical Properties and Dimensional Stability

Natural fiber composites (NFC) are eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic polymers. However, some intrinsic natural fillers' properties hinder their widespread implementation as reinforcement in polymeric matrices and require further investigation. In the scope of this study, the thermal, rheologic, mechanical (tension and flexural modes), and morphological properties, as well as the water absorption and dimensional stability of the NF polypropylene (PP)-based injection molded composites reinforced with rice husk (rh) and olive pits (op) of 20 wt.% and 30% wt.%, respectively, were investigated. The results suggest that the higher content of the rice husk and olive pits led to a similar reduction in the melt flow index (MFI), independent of the additive type compared to virgin polypropylene (PPv). The melting and crystallization temperatures of the PPrh and PPop composites did not change with statistical significance. The composites are stiffer than the PP matrix by up to 49% and possess higher mechanical strength in the tension mode at the expense of decreased ductility. PPrh and PPop have a superior flexural modulus in the bending mode, while the flexural strength improvement was accomplished for the PP30%rh. The influence of the fibers' distribution in the bulk of the parts on their mechanical performance was confirmed based on a non-localized morphology evaluation, which constitutes a novelty of the presented research. The dimensional stability of the composites was improved as the linear shrinkage in the flow direction was decreased by 49% for PPrh and 30% for PPop, positively correlating with an increase in the filler content and stiffness. PPop was less susceptible to water sorption than PPrh due to fibers' composition and larger surface-to-area volume ratios.

Solar-Driven Thermocatalytic Synthesis of Octahydroquinazolinone Using Novel Polyvinylchloride (PVC)-Supported Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3) Catalysts

The chemical industry is one of the main fossil fuel consumers, so its reliance on sustainable and renewable resources such as wind and solar energy should be increased to protect the environment. Accordingly, solar-driven thermocatalytic synthesis of octahydroquinazolinone using polyvinylchloride (PVC)-supported aluminum oxide (Al2O3) as a catalyst under natural sunlight is proposed in this work. The Al2O3/PVC catalysts were characterized by FT-IR, SEM, BET, XRD, and XPS techniques. The obtained results indicate that the yield and reaction time can be modified by adjusting the molar ratio of the catalyst. To investigate the stability of the catalyst, the spent catalyst was reused in several reactions. The results indicated that, when a 50% Al2O3 catalyst is employed in an absolute solar heat, it performs exceptionally well in terms of yield (98%) and reaction time (35 min). Furthermore, the reaction times and yield of octahydroquinazolinone derivatives with an aryl moiety were superior to those of heteroaryl. All the synthesized compounds were well characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR. The current work introduces a new strategy to use solar heat for energy-efficient chemical reactions using a cost-effective, recyclable environmentally friendly PVC/Al2O3 catalyst that produces a high yield.

Mechanical, thermal, and tribological characterization of bio-polymeric composites: A comprehensive review

The current review extensively discusses the effects of various natural fillers on mechanical, thermal, and tribological characteristics of polypropylene, polyethylene, poly(vinyl chloride), and polyester resin matrices. The discussion has considered all of the tensile, flexural, and impact properties along with the wear rate and thermogravimetric analysis of a wide range of natural reinforcements. Detailed comparative studies about the factors that influence the fillers’ performance in the polymeric composites were also conducted to give the reader a comprehensive understanding to enable a better selection of the optimized characteristics to develop a more sustainable design. This systematic review indicates that the majority of green fillers had an adverse effect on the tensile strength of the considered matrices, but generally improved the tensile modulus. Moreover, the studied fillers enhanced the flexural modulus property for all mentioned matrices. The impact strength was dramatically influenced by the intrinsic characteristic of the filler type.

A comprehensive review of the polyolefin composites and their properties

Polyolefins are formed by the polymerization of olefin monomer units such as ethylene, styrene, and vinyl chloride. Polyolefins composites are a mixture of polyolefins with different types of other polymers, reinforcements, or fillers. Blending neat polyolefins with composites widens its uses in various applications that require high efficiency in the areas of environmental degradation, impact resistance, fire and chemical resistance, or strength. In this review, the effects of blending neat polyolefin with other types of polymers or wood fibers on the properties of neat polymers have been represented. Moreover, this review reveals the importance of a coupling agent or compatibilizer in the improvement of the polyolefin’s compatibility with the other added components.
