High Degradation of Methylene Blue Using a New Nanocomposite Based on Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8

Synergistic effect of ZnO/Ag2O@g-C3N4 based nanocomposites embedded in carrageenan matrix for dye degradation in water

This research achieved success by synthesizing innovative nanocomposite composed of zinc oxide (ZnO), graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and silver oxide (Ag2O) nanomaterials incorporated into a carrageenan matrix, thus creating an environmentally friendly and stable support structure. The synthesis process involved hydrothermal and chemical precipitation methods to create photocatalytic g-C3N4, ZnO, and Ag2O nanocomposites. The success is evident through the characterization results, which unveiled distinctive peaks corresponding to Zn-O (590-404 cm-1) and Ag-O (2072 cm-1) stretching in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, conclusively confirming the successful synthesis of g-C3N4, ZnO, Ag2O, and their respective nanocomposites. Further validation through a scanning electron microscope coupled with an energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDX) and elemental mapping affirmed the presence of Zn, O, Ag, C, and N. Additionally, transmission electron microscope (TEM) imaging unveiled the nanosheet morphology of g-C3N4, the nanorod structure of ZnO, and the spherical form of Ag2O nanomaterials. ZnO and Ag2O nanomaterials demonstrated a consistent 10-20 nm size range. To underscore their ability to harness visible light, the nanomaterials were excited at 380 nm, emitting visible light emission within the 400-450 nm range. The synthesized nanocomposites showcased outstanding adsorption and photocatalytic properties, achieving efficiency ranging from 80 % to 98 %, attributed to the synergistic interactions between the various components. These findings culminate in a confirmation of the research's success, validating the exceptional potential of these nanocomposites for various applications.

Copper-Based Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Frameworks for Fenton-like Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue under UV and Sunlight Irradiation

To efficiently degrade organic pollutants, photocatalysts must be effective under both ultraviolet (UV) radiation and sunlight. We synthesized a series of new metal-organic frameworks by using mild hydrothermal conditions. These frameworks incorporate three distinct bipyridyl ligands: pyrazine (pyr), 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy), and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe). The resulting compounds are denoted as [Cu(pyz)(H2O)2MF6], [Cu(bpy)2(H2O)2]·MF6, and [Cu(bpe)2(H2O)2]·MF6·H2O [M = Zr (1, 3, and 5) and Hf (2, 4, and 6)]. All six compounds exhibited a two-dimensional crystal structure comprising infinitely nonintersecting linear chains. Compound 3 achieved 100% degradation of methylene blue (MB) after 8 min under UV irradiation and 100 min under natural sunlight in the presence of H2O2 as the electron acceptor. For compound 5, 100% MB degradation was achieved after 120 min under sunlight and 10 min under UV light. Moreover, reactive radical tests revealed that the dominant species involved in photocatalytic degradation are hydroxyl (•OH), superoxide radicals (•O2-), and photogenerated holes (h+). The photodegradation process followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, with photodegradation rate constants of 0.362 min-1 (0.039 min-1) for 3 and 0.316 min-1 (0.033 min-1) for 5 under UV (sunlight) irradiation. The developed photocatalysts with excellent activity and good recyclability are promising green catalysts for degrading organic pollutants during environmental decontamination.

Optical and UV Shielding Properties of Inorganic Nanoparticles Embedded in Polymethyl Methacrylate Nanocomposite Freestanding Films

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is an interesting polymer employed in various applications due to its outstanding properties. However, its electrical and mechanical properties can be further improved by incorporating nanoparticles, and in particular, PMMA nanocomposite with nanoparticles provides various multifunctional properties. This work reports PMMA nanocomposite preparation and structural and optical characterizations incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNTs), TiO2 nanoparticles, and carbon quantum dots (CQDs). CNT/PMMA, TiO2/PMMA, and CQD/PMMA nanocomposite freestanding films were prepared using a simple solution method. Various properties of the prepared composite films were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, Fourier transform infrared, and UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopy. Optical parameters and photocatalytic dye degradation for the films are reported, focusing on the properties of the materials. The CNT/PMMA, TiO2/PMMA, and CQD/PMMA films achieved, respectively, good electrical conductivity, photodegradation, and fluorescence compared with other composite films.

Sn(IV)porphyrin-Incorporated TiO2 Nanotubes for Visible Light-Active Photocatalysis

In this study, two distinct photocatalysts, namely tin(IV)porphyrin-sensitized titanium dioxide nanotubes (SnP-TNTs) and titanium dioxide nanofibers (TNFs), were synthesized and characterized using various spectroscopic techniques. SnP-TNTs were formed through the hydrothermal reaction of NaOH with TiO2 (P-25) nanospheres in the presence of Sn(IV)porphyrin (SnP), resulting in a transformation into Sn(IV)porphyrin-imbedded nanotubes. In contrast, under similar reaction conditions but in the absence of SnP, TiO2 (P-25) nanospheres evolved into nanofibers (TNFs). Comparative analysis revealed that SnP-TNTs exhibited a remarkable enhancement in the visible light photodegradation of model pollutants compared to SnP, TiO2 (P-25), or TNFs. The superior photodegradation activity of SnP-TNTs was primarily attributed to synergistic effects between TiO2 (P-25) and SnP, leading to altered conformational frameworks, increased surface area, enhanced thermo-chemical stability, unique morphology, and outstanding visible light photodegradation of cationic methylene blue dye (MB dye). With a rapid removal rate of 95% within 100 min (rate constant = 0.0277 min-1), SnP-TNTs demonstrated excellent dye degradation capacity, high reusability, and low catalyst loading, positioning them as more efficient than conventional catalysts. This report introduces a novel direction for porphyrin-incorporated catalytic systems, holding significance for future applications in environmental remediation.

Laser-Driven Rapid Synthesis of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Investigation of UV-NIR Optical Absorption, Luminescence, Photocatalytic Degradation, and Gas and Ion Adsorption Properties

In this study, we designed a platform based on a laser-driven approach for fast, efficient, and controllable MOF synthesis. The laser irradiation method was performed for the first time to synthesize Zn-based MOFs in record production time (approximately one hour) compared to all known MOF production methods with comparable morphology. In addition to well-known structural properties, we revealed that the obtained ZnMOFs have a novel optical response, including photoluminescence behavior in the visible range with nanosecond relaxation time, which is also supported by first-principles calculations. Additionally, photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue with ZnMOF was achieved, degrading the 10 ppm methylene blue (MB) solution 83% during 1 min of irradiation time. The application of laser technology can inspire the development of a novel and competent platform for a fast MOF fabrication process and extend the possible applications of MOFs to miniaturized optoelectronic and photonic devices.

Amorphous-crystalline phase transition and intrinsic magnetic property of nickel organic framework for easy immobilization and recycling of β-Galactosidase

This work describes the synthesis of fibrous nickel-based metal organic framework (Ni-ZIF) via simple solvothermal method. The material formed was calcinated at 400, 600, 800 °C to improve its surface area, porosity and enzyme binding capacity. Changes in X-ray diffraction pattern after calcination revealed the Ni-ZIF transitioned from amorphous to crystalline structure. The surface area, pore volume and pore size for Ni-ZIF@600 were found to be 312.15 m2/g, 0.88 cm3/g and 10.28 nm, with an enzyme loading capacity of 593.85 mg/g after 30 h The free (β-Gal-LEH) and immobilized β-Galactosidase were stable at pH 7.5, temperature 50 °C, and yielded 70.70 and 63.95 mM glucose after milk lactose hydrolysis, respectively. The Ni-ZIF@600@β-Gal-LEH exhibited high enzyme retention capacity, maintaining 59.44 % of its original activity after 6-cycles. The enhanced magnetic property, enzyme binding capacity and easy recoverability of the calcinated Ni-ZIF could guarantee its industrial significance as immobilization module for enzyme-mediated catalysis.

Synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework-Based ZIF-8@ZIF-67 Nanocomposites for Antibiotic Decomposition and Antibacterial Activities

Toxic antibiotic effluents and antibiotic-resistant bacteria constitute a threat to global health. So, scientists are investigating high-performance materials for antibiotic decomposition and antibacterial activities. In this novel research work, we have successfully designed ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposites via sol-gel and solvothermal approaches. The ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposite is characterized by various techniques that exhibit superior surface area enhancement, charge separation, and high light absorption performance. Yet, ZIF-8 has high adsorption rates and active sites, while ZIF-67 has larger pore volume and efficient adsorption and reaction capabilities, demonstrating that the ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposite outperforms pristine ZIF-8 and ZIF-67. Compared with pristine ZIF-8 and ZIF-67, the most active 6ZIF-67@ZIF-8 nanocomposite showed higher decomposition efficacy for ciprofloxacin (65%), levofloxacin (54%), and ofloxacin (48%). Scavenger experiments confirmed that •OH, •O2-, and h+ are the most active species for the decomposition of ciprofloxacin (CIP), levofloxacin (LF), and ofloxacin (OFX), respectively. In addition, the 6ZIF-67/ZIF-8 nanocomposite suggested its potential applications in Escherichia coli for growth inhibition zone, antibacterial activity, and decreased viability. Moreover, the stability test and decomposition pathway of CIP, LF, and OFX were also proposed. Finally, our study aims to enhance the efficiency and stability of ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposite and potentially enable its applications in antibiotic decomposition, antibacterial activities, and environmental remediation.

A novel CoMoO4 enwrapped ZIF-8 nanocomposite with enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity

A hybrid nano catalyst, CoMoO4 anchored zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) has been synthesized by simplest in-situ chemical method. The characterization results showed that the CoMoO4@ZIF-8 composites had a crystalline structure with a uniform distribution of the Cobalt molybdate particles on the ZIF-8 surface. The FTIR spectra revealed the presence of characteristic peaks for both ZIF-8 and CoMoO4, indicating the successful incorporation of the metal molybdate into the ZIF-8 framework. The SEM-EDS analysis showed that the CoMoO4 nanoparticles (NPs) have been evenly distributed on the ZIF-8 surface. In HRTEM, some rod-like CoMoO4 is observed on the surface of the ZIF-8 material, which is stacked in a disorderly manner and a porous channel structure is formed. The photocatalytic activity of the CoMoO4@ZIF-8 has been evaluated using the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and antibiotic Ciprofloxacin (CIP) under visible light. The optimal photocatalytic activity was achieved with the CoMoO4@ZIF-8 composite, which showed a degradation efficiency of 100% under visible light after 40 min of irradiation. In conclusion, the CoMoO4@ZIF-8 composites showed enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light, and it exhibited the best performance compared with pure CoMoO4 and ZIF-8.

DFT stimulation and experimental insights of chiral Cu(II)-salen scaffold within the pocket of MWW-zeolite and its catalytic study

A Cu(II)-salen complex encapsulated in MWW-framework as an efficient chiral organocatalyst was developed for the synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-one (DHPMs) derivatives via an asymmetric pathway. In order to confirm its structural properties, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder XRD, BET, XPS, FE-SEM, EDX, UV-Vis, and FTIR spectra were used. Using computer-assisted DFT calculations, the Cu(II)-salen complex has been fine-tuned to fit into the pocket of the porous MWW support while keeping its chirality. This organocatalyst was shown to be a potent catalyst for the formation of the desired DHPMs product under short reaction times. Furthermore, this green protocol allows rapid and simple isolation of active MWW-trapped Cu(II)-salen scaffolds and its reusability in at least five consecutive runs without losing much of its activity.

Synergistic C-TiO2/ZIF-8 type II heterojunction photocatalyst for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue

Zinc imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) and titanium dioxide (TiO₂) have been extensively studied as photocatalysts and have shown remarkable potential. In this study, we report the synthesis of a type II heterojunction photocatalyst based on carbon-doped TiO₂ (C-TiO₂) and ZIF-8 as a potentially improved material for solar light-harvested methylene blue (MB) degradation. Pure ZIF-8 has a wide band gap of 4.9 eV, due to which the application of this material to visible light-assisted photocatalytic performance is a challenging task. Therefore, C-TiO₂ has been chosen as a composite material with ZIF-8 owing to its narrow band gap compared to TiO₂. This enables the free radical-initiated photocatalytic reaction to shift into the visible region instead of the ultraviolet region. To construct the C-TiO₂/ZIF-8 heterostructure, the zinc-based ZIF matrix has been built upon the exterior of C-TiO₂ nanoparticles. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis-DRS) corroborated the decrease in the band gap of ZIF-8 after the fabrication of C-TiO₂/ZIF-8, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis demonstrated a decrease in average d-spacing and average crystallite size of the synthesized photocatalyst. Raman spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the synthesized samples were also performed to further understand their chemical structure and elemental content. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analyses were performed to understand the valence band (VB) states and the morphology of C-TiO₂/ZIF-8. The comparison between pure ZIF-8 and C-TiO₂/ZIF-8 in the photocatalytic degradation of MB under visible light has also been drawn. A possible charge-transfer mechanism for the same has also been proposed. It is concluded that the synergistic effect of C-TiO₂ and ZIF-8 in C-TiO₂/ZIF-8 produces an effective material for photocatalytic dye degradation.

Metal-organic frameworks in photocatalytic Z-scheme heterojunctions: an emerging technology

There is an urgent need for cleaner production processes for chemicals. An efficient and promising alternative for such reactions is heterogeneous photocatalysis, which works on the principle of converting (visible) light, including solar energy, into chemical energy. To that end, properly designed semiconductor based photocatalysts are necessary to trigger the photocatalytic reactions. Many commonly used photocatalysts have too large bandgaps (3-3.4 eV) to use visible light and a too low surface area for efficient production. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as an encouraging class of materials for photocatalytic applications due to their (i) large surface area and porosity that facilitate adsorption towards chemicals, (ii) tunable crystallinity and optical and electronic properties for efficient light absorption in the visible region, (iii) tunable composition and functionality that make them versatile photocatalysts for a wide range of reactions, and (iv) facile development of composites with other semiconductors to produce Z-scheme heterojunctions that can effectively suppress the recombination of photogenerated charges. Ongoing research has started focusing on the judicious construction of Z-scheme heterojunctions in MOFs, to mimic natural photosynthesis, such that the MOF photocatalysts have higher light harvesting capacity, spatially separated reductive and oxidative active sites, and well-preserved redox ability. This review provides a concise compilation of the recent progress in the development and applications of MOF-based Z-scheme photocatalysts, their advanced characterization, and future perspectives for further advancements.

Novel and Facile Synthesis of Carbon Quantum Dots from Chicken Feathers and Their Application as a Photocatalyst to Degrade Methylene Blue Dye

Methylene blue (MB) is a most commonly used synthetic dye in the textile industry. It is an extremely carcinogenic phenothiazine derivative and therefore needs to be removed from the water bodies. In the present study, a single-step hydrothermal novel synthesis of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) extracted from biomass of chicken feathers has been performed, and the synthesized CQDs were applied to remove MB present in the aqueous samples. A number of techniques such as ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the samples for the conformity purposes. SEM and XRD analysis showed that CQDs are highly crystalline and have spherical structures with an average particle diameter of 35 nm. In the presence of 0.2 g of synthesized CQDs, MB dye degraded drastically under the sunlight. The rate of degradation was studied by determining the absorbance of the degraded sample with time relevant to untreated sample. The % degradation achieved during first 60 min of time was approximately 92% which increased minimally to a value of only 95% after 100 min of time. The ease of synthesis of carbon dots at low cost contributes hugely to their utilizations as an efficient photocatalyst for the degradation of aqueous pollutants. The opted approach to synthesize CQDs is cost-effective and eco-friendly and demonstrates excellent potential to remove MB from the aqueous samples.

Adsorption of dyestuff by nano copper oxide coated alkali metakaoline geopolymer in monolith and powder forms: Kinetics, isotherms and microstructural analysis

To remove contaminants and pollutants from wastewater systems, adsorbents are widely used. Geopolymers offer a convenient alternative as adsorbents in the wastewater treatment system as they are low-cost, environmentally friendly, and safer. A new adsorbent material prepared by coating nano copper oxide on the surface of alkali-activated metakaolin showed a higher ability to remove methylene blue (MB) dye from wastewater, thus making them attractive in dye removal applications. First, nano copper oxide was prepared by sol gel method and metakaolin geopolymer was produced using sodium silicate solution having a Ms value of 1.1 (M). Afterwards, nano copper oxide (MC) was coated on the surface of the geopolymer. The ability of MB dye to bind to both pristine (M^p, MC^p) and powder forms (M^pr, MC^pr) of the geopolymer was evaluated. X-ray diffraction revealed that the halo found at 27.40°-31.077° (2θvalue) in both samples related to amorphous gel's composition and the major peaks of copper oxide in MC^pr were sited at a 2θ value of 35.45° and 38.88°.The dye removal efficiency can be inferred from the increased adsorption capacity of 11.9 mg/g (M^p) and 14.4 mg/g (MC^p) for the monolith form and 81.43 mg/g (M^pr) and 87.82 mg/g (MC^pr) for the powder form. The adsorption of reused active sites was 73% for M^pr and 83% for MC^pr up to the fifth cycle after regeneration by heat treatment at 400 °C. The models that best suited the adsorption data were pseudo-second-order and Freundlich isotherms, which indicated possible chemisorption with intra-particle diffusion. Furthermore, the binding energy is shifted to lower value in XPS spectra due to dye adsorption arising from electrostatic attraction. A higher electron density is formed due to interaction with an equal contribution of silanol Si-O-H and Si-O-Na/Cu(O1s). The adsorbents are effective over a wide pH range and their improved recycling capability increases their applications for a wide range of uses.

Zwitterionic meso-silica/polypeptide hybrid nanoparticles for efficient azithromycin delivery and photodynamic therapy for synergistic treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infection

The treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infections attributed to the overuse of antibiotics still remains a serious challenge globally. Herein, zwitterionic charge switchable meso-silica/polypeptide hybrid nanoparticles (MSPNs) were prepared for the synergistic chemo-photodynamic therapy in the treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infections. Subsequently, azithromycin (AZT) and methylene blue (MB) were loaded in the MSPNs to form the combined chemo-photodynamic therapeutic nanoparticles (MSPNs-AZT/MB) for the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Remarkably, the as-prepared MSPNs-AZT/MB exhibited a negative surface charge of -5.2 mV at physiological pH while switching into positive surface charge of 24.7 mv in an acidic environment, leading to enhanced binding with bacterial surface. The lipase-triggered AZT release up to 77.9 % was achieved, and the loaded MB demonstrated efficient singlet oxygen (¹O₂) generation for photodynamic therapy. The in vitro experimental results displayed an excellent antibacterial effect against MRSA in both planktonic and biofilm phenotypes. Additionally, the as-prepared MSPNs-AZT/MB exhibited synergistic and enhanced antibacterial infection effect up to 94 % comparing to monotherapy in a mice model. Considering the above advantages, the as-prepared combined chemo-photodynamic therapeutic nanoparticles showed promising biocompatibility and clinical potential for the efficient therapy of drug-resistant bacteria.

MIL-100(Fe)-Hybridized Nanofibers for Adsorption and Visible Light Photocatalytic Degradation of Water Pollutants: Experimental and DFT Approach

As rapid industrial growth spawns severe water contamination and a far-reaching impact on environmental safety, the development of a purification system is in high demand. Herein, a visible light-induced photocatalytic adsorbent membrane was developed by growing a porous metal-organic framework (MOF), MIL-100(Fe) crystals, onto electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers, and its purification capability by adsorption and the photocatalytic effect was investigated. As water-soluble organic foulants, a cationic dye, rhodamine B (RhB), and an anionic dye, methyl orange (MO), were employed, and the adsorption/desorption characteristics were analyzed. Since MIL-100(Fe) possesses positive charges in aqueous solution, MO was more rapidly adsorbed onto the MIL-100(Fe) grown PAN membrane (MIL-100(Fe)@PAN) than RhB. Under visible light, both photocatalytic degradation and adsorption occurred concurrently, facilitating the purification process. The reusability of MIL-100(Fe)@PAN as an adsorbent was explored by cyclic adsorption-desorption experiments. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations corroborated higher binding energy of charged MO over RhB and demonstrated the possible steric hindrance of RhB to adhere in MOF pores. The emphasis of the study lies in the combined investigation of the experimental approach and DFT calculations for the fundamental understanding of adsorption/desorption phenomena occurring in the purification process. This study provides theoretical support for the interaction between MOF-hybrid complexes and contaminants when MOF-hybridized composites adsorb or photodegrade water-soluble pollutants of different charges and sizes.
