Theoretical Insights into Synergistic Effects at Cu/TiC Interfaces for Promoting CO2 Activation

Defect-Driven Efficient Selective CO2 Hydrogenation with Mo-Based Clusters

Synthetic fuels produced from CO2 show promise in combating climate change. The reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction is the key to opening the CO2 molecule, and CO serves as a versatile intermediate for creating various hydrocarbons. Mo-based catalysts are of great interest for RWGS reactions featured for their stability and strong metal-oxygen interactions. Our study identified Mo defects as the intrinsic origin of the high activity of cluster Mo2C for CO2-selective hydrogenation. Specifically, we found that defected Mo2C clusters supported on nitrogen-doped graphene exhibited exceptional catalytic performance, attaining a reaction rate of 6.3 gCO/gcat/h at 400 °C with over 99% CO selectivity and good stability. Such a catalyst outperformed other Mo-based catalysts and noble metal-based catalysts in terms of facile dissociation of CO2, highly selective hydrogenation, and nonbarrier liberation of CO. Our study revealed that as a potential descriptor, the atomic magnetism linearly correlates to the liberation capacity of CO, and Mo defects facilitated product desorption by reducing the magnetization of the adsorption site. On the other hand, the defects were effective in neutralizing the negative charges of surface hydrogen, which is crucial for selective hydrogenation. Finally, we have successfully demonstrated that the combination of a carbon support and the carbonization process synergistically serves as a feasible strategy for creating rich Mo defects, and biochar can be a low-cost alternative option for large-scale applications.

Activity Origin of the Nickel Cluster on TiC Support for Nonoxidative Methane Conversion

Designing an active and selective catalyst for nonoxidative conversion of methane under mild conditions is critical for natural gas utilization as a chemical feedstock. Here, we demonstrate that the origin of the selective nonoxidative conversion of methane by the titanium carbide supported nickel cluster arises from the formation of a nickel carbide site under the reaction conditions, which could stabilize the CH_x intermediate to facilitate the C-C coupling, but further coking is rather limited. The reaction mechanism reveals that the C₂ products can be formed via a key -CH_x-CH₃ intermediate. In addition, we demonstrate that boration of the nickel cluster site can improve the methane conversion toward C₂ products. That higher activity and selectivity from the moderate rise in d orbital energy levels can therefore be considered as a descriptor of the catalyst effectiveness. These findings provide an understanding of the dynamic behavior of the single nickel cluster toward methane conversion to C₂ products and guidance for their future rational design.

Recent Advances in Carbon Dioxide Adsorption, Activation and Hydrogenation to Methanol using Transition Metal Carbides

The inevitable emission of carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) due to the burning of a substantial amount of fossil fuels has led to serious energy and environmental challenges. Metal-based catalytic CO₂ transformations into commodity chemicals are a favorable approach in the CO₂ mitigation strategy. Among these transformations, selective hydrogenation of CO₂ to methanol is the most promising process that not only fulfils the energy demands but also re-balances the carbon cycle. The investigation of CO₂ adsorption on the surface of heterogeneous catalyst is highly important because the formation of various intermediates which determines the selectivity of product. Transition metal carbides (TMCs) have received considerable attention in recent years because of their noble metal-like reactivity, ceramic-like properties, high chemical and thermal stability. These features make them excellent catalytic materials for a variety of transformations such as CO₂ adsorption and its conversion into value-added chemicals. Herein, the catalytic properties of TMCs are summarize along with synthetic methods, CO₂ binding modes, mechanistic studies, effects of dopant on CO₂ adsorption, and carbon/metal ratio in the CO₂ hydrogenation reaction to methanol using computational as well as experimental studies. Additionally, this Review provides an outline of the challenges and opportunities for the development of potential TMCs in CO₂ hydrogenation reactions.
