Adsorption of Phosphate in Aqueous Phase by Biochar Prepared from Sheep Manure and Modified by Oyster Shells

Nutrients recovery from livestock wastewater by batch and gas bubble-column studies with biochar, nano-composite material, and ammonium magnesium phosphate hydrate

The breeding of livestock raises substantial environmental concerns, especially the efficient management of nutrients and pollution. This research is designed to assess the potency of char and modified char in diluting nutrient concentrations in livestock wastewater. The characteristics of graphene oxide, struvite, and calcium-modified char were inspected, defining their efficacy in both batch and bed-column investigations of nutrient sorption. Various factors, including sorption capacity, time of contact, ion levels, a decrease in ion levels over time, and sorption kinetics, have been considered, along with their appropriateness for respective models. The first evaluation of the options concluded that 600 °C char was better since it exhibited higher removal efficiency. Modified char sorption data at 600 °C was used to adjust the models "PSOM, Langmuir", and "Thomas". The models were applied to both batch and bed-column experiments. The maximum phosphate sorption was 110.8 mg/g, 85.73 mg/g, and 82.46 mg/g for B-GO, B-S, and B-C modified chars respectively, in the batch experiments. The highest phosphate sorption in column experiments, at a flow rate of 400 μl/min, was 51.23 mg per 10 g of sorbent. This corresponds to a sorption rate of 5.123 mg/g. B-GO and B-S modified chars showed higher sorption capacities; this was observed in both the batch and bed-column studies. This displayed the capability of graphene oxide and struvite-modified chars for efficient ion and nutrient uptake, whether in single or multi-ion environments, making them a very good candidate for nutrient filtration in livestock wastewater treatment. Additionally, B-GO char enhanced the sorption of phosphate, resulting in augmented seed germination and seedling growth. These results reveal that B-GO char can be used as a possible substitute for chemical fertilizers.

A novel ionic liquid-entrapped MIL-101(Cr) framework with enhanced removal efficiency towards phosphate from aqueous solution

Developing adsorbent materials with high adsorptive dephosphorization (ADP) is significant for treating phosphate from aqueous solutions and eutrophic water. Herein, the MIL-101(Cr) framework was entrapped ionic liquid (IL) of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazoliumbromide ionic liquid ([C4mem]+[Br]-) using a ship-in-a-bottle approach to obtain novel adsorbents [C4mem]+[Br]-@MIL-101(Cr) contained varied IL contents, namely C4mem@MIL-101. The characterization results revealed that the formed [C4mem]+[Br]- molecules interacted with the MIL-101(Cr) frameworks, enhanced their stability, and offered additional adsorption sites. The batch adsorptions of phosphate showed that the optimized C4mem@MIL-101 adsorbent loaded with ~ 7% IL-based N content had the highest phosphate absorbing capacity of ~ 200 mg/g, outperforming the pristine MIL-101(Cr) and other adsorbents. The ADP efficiency was facilitated in the acidic media, where the phosphate ions of H2PO4- and HPO42- captured onto the C4mem@MIL-101 via several interactions, including electrostatic attraction, H-bonds, and chemical interactions. In the meantime, the coexisting anions diminished the phosphate adsorption because they competed with the pollutants at adsorption sites. Furthermore, phosphate treatment under the continuous fixed-bed conditions showed that 1 g of the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-mixed C4mem@MIL-101 pellets purified 25 l of water containing phosphate with a 1 mg/l concentration. The results suggest that the novel [C4mem]+[Br]-@MIL-101(Cr) structure had a high potential for treating phosphate in aqueous solutions.

Optimization of pig manure-derived biochar for ammonium and phosphate simultaneous recovery from livestock wastewater

Livestock wastewater has led to serious eco-environmental issues. To effectively treat livestock wastewater and realize the resource utilization of livestock solid waste, manure waste has been widely used to prepare biochar for the recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus. However, fresh biochar has a poor ability to adsorb phosphate due to its negative charge. To overcome the defect, the proportion of biochar samples prepared at 400 °C and 700 °C was optimized under a mass ratio of 2:3 to obtain mixed biochar PM 4-7, achieving the purpose of enhanced ammonium and phosphate recovery in livestock wastewater simultaneously without any modification. The effects of pyrolysis temperature, dosage, and pH were studied, different adsorption models were used to explore the adsorption mechanism, and the effect of biochar loaded with nutrient elements on seed was verified through a seed germination experiment. It was revealed that the maximum removal rates of phosphate and ammonium were 33.88 % and 41.50 %, respectively, endorsing that mixed biochar PM 4-7 can recover nutrients from livestock wastewater, and could be used as a slow-release fertilizer to promote seed germination and growth. This method provides a new potential way for the efficient resource utilization of pig manure and the recovery of nutrients from breeding wastewater.

Removal Efficiency and Performance Optimization of Organic Pollutants in Wastewater Using New Biochar Composites

The purpose is to optimize the catalytic performance of biochar (BC), improve the removal effect of BC composites on organic pollutants in wastewater, and promote the recycling and sustainable utilization of water resources. Firstly, the various characteristics and preparation principles of new BC are discussed. Secondly, the types of organic pollutants in wastewater and their removal principles are discussed. Finally, based on the principle of removing organic pollutants, BC/zero valent iron (BC/ZVI) composite is designed, among which BC is mainly used for catalysis. The effect of BC/ZVI in removing tetracycline (TC) is comprehensively evaluated. The research results reveal that the TC removal effect of pure BC is not ideal, and that of ZVI is general. The BC/ZVI composite prepared by combining the two has a better removal effect on TC, with a removal amount of about 275 mg/g. Different TC concentrations, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), pH environment, tert-butanol, and calcium ions will affect the TC removal effect of BC composites. The overall effect is the improvement of the TC removal amount of BC composites. It reveals that BC has a very suitable catalytic effect on ZVI, and the performance of BC composite material integrating BC catalyst and ZVI has been effectively improved, which can play a very suitable role in wastewater treatment. This exploration provides a technical reference for the effective removal of organic pollutants in wastewater and contributes to the development of water resource recycling.

Oil tea shell synthesized biochar adsorptive utilization for the nitrate removal from aqueous media

Various reported methods are devoted to nitrate removal from water over the years. However, recently researchers are focusing on developing the materials that offer bio-based, non-toxic, inexpensive and yet an efficient solution for water treatment. In this study, removal of nitrates from water was carried out using oil tea shells (OTS) as a biosorbent. OTS powder was impregnated with ZnCl₂ and biochar was prepared which was further treated with Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), a cationic surfactant. Both the Langmuir and the Freundlich models were satisfied by the nitrate adsorption of OTS biochar. The adsorption capacity was measured at 15.6 mg/g when the circumstances were at their best. The pseudo-second-order model provided an accurate description of the kinetic data that were collected from batch trials. The adsorption yield goes up when by usage of more adsorbent, but it goes down when adsorption start with a higher concentration of nitrate. The strong basis of analytical equipments were used to characterize the OTS biosorbent. According to the findings of the research, surface-modified OTS biochar is an effective material for the removal of nitrate from aqueous solutions. This means that it has the potential to be utilized in water treatment as an adsorbent that is both inexpensive and kind to the natural environment. Removal of heavy metals and other organic pollutants, both from groundwater and wastewater using OTS biochar seems like a promising and interesting area of study.
