Effects of the Anode Diffusion Layer on the Performance of a Nonenzymatic Electrochemical Glucose Fuel Cell with a Proton Exchange Membrane

Hydrogen Flow Controller Applied to Driving Behavior Observation of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Performance Test

Fuel cell performance tests for automotive applications include static and dynamic tests, and the dynamic load test is typically carried out to investigate the cell operating performance related to driving behavior in the particular use of fuel cell electric vehicles. The automatic hydrogen flow controller, utilized to regulate the hydrogen flow as a function of time, is one of the imperative apparatuses applied for the dynamic test. The driving behavior generally consists of rapid load fluctuations, several loads running at idle, full power, overload circumstances, start-stop repeats, and cold starting, and these dynamic variations are directly related to the power required for propelling a vehicle and the demand for hydrogen volume fluctuation throughout time. The desired automatic hydrogen flow controller was designed and manufactured for the dynamic performance test via the driving simulation protocol of a heavy-duty vehicle. The main experimental activities were performed to observe the responsibility and accuracy of the invented controller. The relation between the reliability of using the automatic hydrogen flow controller and the performance improvement of fuel cell operation was studied to gain ideas for further fuel cell modification. The hydrogen flow rates controlled by the created flow controller presented a data tolerance of approximately 0.84% which was not significantly different from the theoretical figure based on T-test analysis. The controller reacted to variations in flow rates in as little as 1-2 s, which was acceptable for the dynamic test. Regarding the performance enhancement, this automatic hydrogen flow controller assisted a single cell to generate 16% more power and 33% more energy at 45 mA as a minimum current demand in comparison with the results obtained from a test system using a traditional hydrogen controller with a constant flow rate.

Glucose Fuel Cells and Membranes: A Brief Overview and Literature Analysis

Glucose is a ubiquitous source of energy for nearly all living things, and glucose fuel cells (GFCs) are regarded as a sustainable power source because glucose is renewable, easily available, cheap, abundant, non-toxic and easy-to-store. Numerous efforts have been devoted to developing and improving GFC performance; however, there is still no commercially viable devices on the market. Membranes play an essential role in GFCs for the establishment of a suitable local microenvironment, selective ion conducting and prevention of substrate crossover. However, our knowledge on them is still limited, especially on how to achieve comparable efficacy with that of a biological system. This review article provides the first brief overview on these aspects, particularly keeping in sight the research trends, current challenges, and the future prospects. We aim to bring together literature analysis and technological discussion on GFCs and membranes by using bibliometrics, and provide new ideas for researchers in this field to overcome challenges on developing high-performance GFCs.

Cellulose-acetate coating of carbon cloth diffusion layer for liquid-fed fuel cell applications

Direct glucose fuel cells (DGFCs) and direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) commonly supply the reducing agent in liquid (aq.) form. In this work, we present key characteristics of implementing cellulose acetate (CA) coatings, which can subsequently be deacetylated toward cellulose, on carbon cloth used as a fuel diffusion layer in aqueous fuel-fed cells. Specifically, we illustrate functionality with an abiotic glucose fuel cell. Carbon cloth with and without a CA coating (with varying deacetylation) was characterized in terms of liquid permeation rate, electronic conductivity, and roll-off angle wetting characteristics. Additionally, fuel cell power production was measured over a variety of fuel concentrations and alkalinities by generating polarization curve data. These coatings facilitated a significant increase in aqueous solution permeation and adhesion properties, as well as providing up to two-fold increases in maximum power generation in an alkaline DGFC, despite experiencing some decreased conductivity of the carbon cloth diffusion layer.
