Recent Advancements in Nontoxic Halide Perovskites: Beyond Divalent Composition Space

Recent Advances and Future Perspectives of Lead-Free Halide Perovskites for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

It is still challenging to design and develop the state-of-the-art photocatalysts toward CO2 photoreduction. Enormous researchers have focused on the halide perovskites in the photocatalytic field for CO2 photoreduction, due to their excellent optical and physical properties. The toxicity of lead-based halide perovskites prevents their large-scale applications in photocatalytic fields. In consequence, lead-free halide perovskites (LFHPs) without the toxicity become the promising alternatives in the photocatalytic application for CO2 photoreduction. In recent years, the rapid advances of LFHPs have offer new chances for the photocatalytic CO2 reduction of LFHPs. In this review, we summarize not only the structures and properties of A2 BX6 , A2 B(I)B(III)X6 , and A3 B2 X9 -type LFHPs but also their recent progresses on the photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Furthermore, we also point out the opportunities and perspectives to research LFHPs photocatalysts for CO2 photoreduction in the future.

Temperature symmetry breaking and properties of lead-free organic-inorganic hybrids: bismuth(III) iodide and antimony(III) iodide: (S(CH3)3)3[Bi2I9] and (S(CH3)3)3[Sb2I9]

We have synthesized and characterized two novel lead-free organic-inorganic hybrid crystals: (S(CH3)3)3[Bi2I9] (TBI) and (S(CH3)3)3[Sb2I9] (TSI). Thermal DSC, TG, and DTA analyses indicate structural phase transitions (PTs) in both compounds; TBI undergoes two structural phase transitions at 314.2/314.8 K (cooling/heating) and at 181.5 K of first (I ↔ II) and second order (II ↔ III), respectively. The crystal structures of TBI are refined for phases I (325 K), II (200 K) and III (100 K). TBI exhibits ferroelastic properties since both PTs are accompanied by a change in the symmetry of crystals: P63/mmc → C2/c (I → II) and C2/c → P1̄ (II → III). The presence of a ferroelastic domain structure has been confirmed by optical observations. In turn, TSI also reveals two PTs: I ↔ II (at 303.9/304.1 K) and II ↔ III (212.9/221.4 K). To compare and obtain insight into the mechanism of the PTs of TBI, we have carried out temperature dependent single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Additionally, to confirm the change in the dynamical states of molecules in PTs, dielectric measurements have been carried out between 100 K and 400 K in the frequency range of 200 Hz to 2 MHz. Moreover, the measurements of the 1H NMR spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, and a second moment, M2, of the 1H NMR line have been undertaken in the temperature range between 100 and 300 K.

Emerging Chalcohalide Materials for Energy Applications

Semiconductors with multiple anions currently provide a new materials platform from which improved functionality emerges, posing new challenges and opportunities in material science. This review has endeavored to emphasize the versatility of the emerging family of semiconductors consisting of mixed chalcogen and halogen anions, known as "chalcohalides". As they are multifunctional, these materials are of general interest to the wider research community, ranging from theoretical/computational scientists to experimental materials scientists. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the development of emerging Bi- and Sb-based as well as a new Cu, Sn, Pb, Ag, and hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite-based chalcohalides. We first highlight the high-throughput computational techniques to design and develop these chalcohalide materials. We then proceed to discuss their optoelectronic properties, band structures, stability, and structural chemistry employing theoretical and experimental underpinning toward high-performance devices. Next, we present an overview of recent advancements in the synthesis and their wide range of applications in energy conversion and storage devices. Finally, we conclude the review by outlining the impediments and important aspects in this field as well as offering perspectives on future research directions to further promote the development of chalcohalide materials in practical applications in the future.

Progress and challenges in layered two-dimensional hybrid perovskites

Dimensionality is the game-changer property of a material. The optical and electronic properties of a compound get dramatically influenced by confining dimensions from 3D to 2D. The bulk 3D perovskite materials have shown remarkable up-gradation in the power conversion efficiency, hence grabbing worldwide attention. But instability against moisture, temperature, and ion migration are the factors constantly back-stabbing and hindering from full-scale commercialization. 2D perovskite material has emerged as an excellent bridging entity between structural-chemical stability, and viable commercialization. Organic-inorganic 2D perovskite materials come with a layered structure in which a large organic cation layer as a spacer is sandwiched between two inorganic metal halide octahedra layers. Moreover, hydrophobic spacer cations are employed which isolate inorganic octahedral layers from water molecules. Hydrophobic spacer cations protect the authentic structure from being degraded. These layered structures occur in two phases namely the Ruddlesden-Popper phase and Dion-Jacobson phase, depending on the spacer cation types. Alternating inorganic and organic layers form multiple quantum wells naturally, along with spin-orbit-coupling gives Rashba splitting. 2D perovskite materials are coming up with interesting chemical, physical properties like exciton dynamics, charge carrier transport, and electron-phonon coupling as a result of the quantum confinement effect. Despite appreciable stability, limited charge transport and large bandgap are limiting the application of 2D perovskite materials in solar cells. These limitations can be overcome by using the concept of 2D/3D multidimensional hybrid perovskites, which includes the long-term stability of 2D perovskite and the high performance of 3D perovskite at the same time. Here in this perspective, we have given brief insight on structural versatility, synthesis techniques, some of the unique photophysical properties, potential device fabrication, and recent advancements in the 2D structure to stand against degradation. Certain shortcomings and future outlooks are also discussed to make the perspective more informative.
